I remain convinced that the closed guard is one of the best guards we can use in BJJ and that it has a place in every grappler’s toolbox. Gi or No-Gi, leg locks or wrist locks, sweeping or back takes, whatever your preferences are, the closed guard can help you achieve them.

The one thing we need to stop doing, though, is looking at the options from this versatile position one-dimensionally. Yes, if you set up in front of your opponent and try to reach far in an attempt to grab and hold their collars, you won’t achieve much. But, then again, this is true at the black belt as it is at the white belt, so there has to be something wrong with this approach.

The closed guard refers to the way you position your legs, and not the entirety of your body, especially relative to your opponent. In fact, the more angles you use, the better your closed guard is going to be. Variations like the Williams Guard, Rubber Guard, high guard, Side Scissors, overhook closed guard, and a bunch of others have been successful simply because they don’t place us in a front alignment, which seems to be what most people think the closed guard is all about.

The Darce Choke, a.k.a. the Brabo choke, screw choke, inverted arm-triangle choke… Like every other popular move it has several names and several people claiming to have invented it. No matter which name is to your liking, it’s a powerful choke in BJJ. I, personally, was first exposed to it as the Darce choke, so that’s how I’ll refer to it. Over the years it’s become one of my favorite weapons, mostly because it is applicable from almost every position possible.

Born out of necessity, in my case at least, the Darce has truly transformed my game. It all began with me getting stuck in people’s half guard while they had an undertook on me. As everyone who trains knows, this can be a sticky position if the bottom person knows what they’re doing. 

Enter the Darce choke. In all fairness, I had no idea what I was doing and just instinctively went for a whizzer/overhook while trying to control the head in order to hang on for dear life. Then, one day, an older student introduced me to the Darce, which clicked perfectly in my quest to beat the underhook half-guard. Fast forward a decade, and it’s become one of the most utilized weapons in my Jiu-Jitsu arsenal.

Who Invented Darce Choke?

The Darce Choke is officially considered to have been invented by a grappler named Joe D’arce, a BJJ Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. He competed in over a hundred grappling and BJJ tournaments with a lot of success.

The relation with the Renzo Gracie gym also gives John Danaher bragging rights in terms of the invention of the choke, which he is not shy to claim. While Joe Darce is famed for this choke a lot of sources suggest that the Darce choke was originally put together by a German Luta Livre competitor named Björn Dag Lagerström.

What Does Darce Mean?

As you might have concluded. Darce is the surname of the  BJJ Black Belt who made the move popular (and might have invented it) – Joe D’arce. In fact, the correct way to write the name is D’arce, but many people have adopted the much easier-to-remember and spell ‘Darce’, which has spread around the BJJ world. 

You might encounter the choke under different names as well, such as the Brabo choke, screw choke, or inverted arm-triangle choke.

The Evolution of the Darce BJJ Choke

As with plenty of moves in BJJ, the Darce choke came about by accident. If we stick to the original information on its origin, a Norwegian grappler by the name of Björn Dag Lagerström is the father of the modern Darce choke. He inadvertently came up with the move while learning the Anaconda choke and tying his arms the other way. 

Björn managed to use the newly discovered technique to choke out all of his opponents at a tournament in Germany in 1996. That is when the world was introduced to the Darce choke albeit not with that name. 

The choke’s greatest ambassador, though, was a Brazilian by the name of Milton Vieira. A submission artist who was famous for his use of the Anaconda choke, Milton joined the famous Brazilian Top Team in 2000. He took the Darce choke with him where he taught it to the whole team, most notably Rodrigo ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira. 

Minotauro wasted no time and successfully used the Darce to choke fellow heavyweights in MMA, further catapulting the move’s popularity. When exactly the term Darce and Joe D’arce’s contribution entered the frame is not known, but it was after these occurrences. 

It was famous grappling coach and BJJ black belt, Marc Laimon who referred to the move after Joe. After witnessing Joe D’arce using the choke with staggering effectiveness at grappling tournaments and accredited the young grappler with the move’s name.

D’arce Choke Mechanics

The Darce choke is, in essence, an anaconda choke but with your arms locked on the other side of the opponent’s trapped head and arm. Both of these chokes originate from the arm triangle (kata-gatame) and share its mechanics.

The principles behind the Darce are that you’re using your arms to create a noose around the opponent’s neck, using the triangle choke mechanic to cut off the blood flow to the brain. That means you need to trap the opponent’s shoulder on one side in addition to their neck. 

One arm is placed in a V-shape at the front of the neck with the opponent’s shoulder right in front of your chest. After wrapping the neck, you then place teh palm of this arm in the crease of your opposite arm’s elbow, grabbing the biceps. This enforces the triangle choke mechanics essential for finishing the strangle.

In this structure, two sides of the triangle are made up of the forearm and biceps of the choking arm, while the third is the upper arm of the opposite arm, which goes on the back of the head of the opponent. The choking points are the forearm of the choking arm placed on one side and the opponent’s own shoulder on the other side.

You can finish the Darce choke in a multitude of different ways, depending mostly on the position of the attacker. 

When setting up the Darce Choke from the front headlock, as shown above, the vice grip is your best bet to control the opponent’s posture. After flipping the opponent to their side, you can sink the choke in by threading your forearm across the neck, starting at the armpit. 

The squeezing motion of the choke is not as straightforward as it seems. Sure, you could just squeeze as hard as you can and get a tap, but it’ll probably be due to a neck crank. 

What you should do instead is focus on making the noose around the head and arm tighter. The best way is to tightly pinch your elbows together before you squeeze by using a rocking motion to get your arms as close as possible to your chest.

Setting up the Darce Choke

It is important to understand that the Darce Choke is more than just a choke, it is a position of great control that can open up plenty of transitions. Even if you only have a vice grip, are already in t the driving seat. 

The reason behind this is that you have an arm trapped and you’re affecting the opponent’s posture at the same time. The control of the shoulder and neck allows you to be able to either push the opponent or slide under him, never losing an ounce of control in the process.

Such a huge amount of control allows you to choose where you’re going to attack the Darce from. Let’s go through some of the most common setups:

Top Half Guard

Getting underhooked when in the top half guard is going to become your favorite position when you master the Darce. Every time the opponent underhooks you from half guard, his arm creates the opening for attacking the Darce. 

The Whizzer is a great tool to restrict the opponent’s movement while you get in place. From there, the most important part of the move is shooting the arm through. Once there, use a scooping motion to control the opponent’s posture, thus opening space to create the triangle. Check the video out for more finishing details: 

Top Side Control

When in top side control there are a couple of ways you can approach the Darce choke. In the first option, the opponent’s body needs to be turning towards you. This can be done by causing your opponent to turn, or when they try to escape:

In the second variation, you find yourself in crossface side control with the opponent’s arm between your knee and elbow. This time the focus is on keeping your opponent on their backs while rotating via North-South to set up the choke:

In both scenarios, it is important to trap their arm and shoot your palm through to the neck. From there, it is pretty much the same as with the top half guard Darce.

Bottom Side Control

A move popularized by the 10th planet community, The Ghost escape is a very sneaky Darce setup from the bottom. For this Darce entry, you need to trap the far arm of the opponent with an overhook when in bottom side control. 

From there, it’s all about the quality of the movement. You need to swing both your legs towards the opponent’s head while holding on to the trapped arm. Once your head gets on the other side of the opponent you use the overtook arm to shoot behind the neck. Getting the Darce from there is an easy chore:

Darce Agaisnt the Turtle 

Since the Darce is positionally very close to the front headlock position, a turtled opponent offers the perfect opportunity to set it up. The entry can be from the front or the side of the opponent. 

The most important point is shooting the arm through. Once the arm is through, there are two options for getting the BJJ Darce choke. For a top position Darce you must utilize the vice grip, flipping the opponent over to side control. In order to shoot the arm through in the first place, you have to attack your opponent from their side:

For the second option, starting from the front of your opponent, the aim is to connect the arms underneath their chin. The position of the arms is an over-under one, where one arm goes over the neck and the other over the opposite arm. From there you forcefully flip to your side simultaneously shooting an arm through for the choke:.

D’arce The World! 

Give the Darce choke a try next time you roll and you’ll be surprised at how easy it actually is. Although lankier people are better fitted for this choke, short arms are not a disadvantage. Experiment with this choke and the positional control if offers and you’ll develop a much tighter game. Oh, and yes, you can use it with and without the Gi! Happy hunting!

While triangling yourself is not a goal for everyone, having hips that can take the full weight of a partner while allowing the rest of your body to reposition is.

The main task of any guard you play is to keep the person on top in your guard. That means you have them in range for attacks and you can destabilize them to sweep or submit when the time is right. The keyword here is timing, and in order to achieve it, you’ll need to be able to keep the top person in your guard for as long as you want.

This is by no means an easy task, and sometimes, you’ll be using your entire body frantically attempting to keep your guard from getting passed. In cases such as those, hip mobility and flexibility can be the difference between conceding the pass, or recovering and immediately attacking from your guard. because the best time to strike is when your opponent thinks they have you where they want.

Part 1 – Pinning 

A few carefully selected chapters on the very essentials of side control positioning to achieve the task of pinning kick the Rayron Gracie Side Control & North South Mastery DVD into gear. One of the dumbest things ever from closed guard is to try to squeeze the opponent’s body with your legs. Crushing pressure in guard works, though, but only when you’re using it to dismantle and pass guards.

Resnekov covers the half guard and quarter guard, offering crush-based ways of dealing with frames and any other aspect of pass prevention you might run into from a guard player. You can be sure they won’t be doing any attacks while you’re placing such pressure from the top.

As the third volume of the Liam Resnekov Lung Ride DVD concludes, you’ll also find useful leg rides based on what we know in BJJ as the staple position, offering even more ways to crush the opponent from the top.

Part 4 – Smothers

The Art of The Smother

Smothers are often frowned upon in Jiu-Jitsu as being dirty moves, but what they are I perfectly legal and useful moves. Moreover, they are not at all easy to master and have nothing to do with your weight and size. They’re just as technical as any choke, if not more, and everyone can do them successfully.

Smothers introduce a very powerful aspect to your grappling game – panic. To be more precise, the panic part refers to the state you’re going to cause your partner. People tend to do stupid stuff when they find themselves under extreme pressure, even if they are experienced BJJ black belts. Maintain the compression long enough and if you don’t get a tap you’ll get panicky reactions.

A ‘Strange’ Way to Understand BJJ Guards

There are different methods of learning sports, and as BJJ evolves, many of these proven and unproven methodologies seep into the sport. One that I found makes a lot of sense, even though it sounds strange when you first hear about it is to do the opposite of what you’re trying to develop. At least at the beginning.

Let’s say you want to learn guard. Start by gunning for the top position first and passing as much as you can. Spending a few months doing passes is going to give you a perfect understanding of what the bottom person is doing that works, and what they should do to be even more effective. Armed with this knowledge you can then start playing guard.

This approach works the other way around as well – to learn passing, start by playing guard a lot for a few months. It makes it easy to understand not just what you need to do, but also what you’re up against, as you begin with a clear idea of what your opponent’s goals are.

The drawback of this method is that you won’t learn fast. You will, however, learn better, and in time, that turns out to be a very well-worth investment, since you’ll actually develop two skills instead of just one. The method works incredibly well for everything in BJJ.

I am pretty wary of GB instructors who release DVDs. Some of them truly excel, but others are so set in the Gracie Barra methodology, that a lot of what they have to share loses its value in all the jibber-jabber associated with this particular school of BJJ.

Luckily, even though it has its flaws, the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD is not one you should disregard quickly. It provides a great balance between the old-school knowledge someone like “Cafe” has of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the no-fluff direct application that only a seasoned competitor can provide.

Purposeful BJJ Grips

The one thing that gets me pretty riled up as a BJJ coach (if I let it) is seeing people grab their partner or opponent just for the sake of feeling like they’re holding. First of all, if you grip any part of your opponent’s body, you have to have a clear idea of what that grip is going to provide for you. Unless you can answer that, don’t grip!

Secondly, any grips you use need to be tight. There is no point in holding the lapel or sleeve of your opponent, only for them to break out at will without having to work for it. Gripping with a purpose and with strength is what makes grips in grappling work, be it Gi or No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

Another aspect of gripping you need to understand is the sequence of gripping during exchanges. Grabbing someone with a tight grip you expect to work for you, like, let’s say a triceps grip, while they have you in collar and sleeve grip is pointless, regardless of how tight the grip is.

So, our grips need purpose and strength and you need to know when to let go and break the opponent’s grips if you want them to make sense during BJJ exchanges. The Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD promises to help you understand how to do exactly that.

GBs Alexandre “Cafe” Dantas

Brazilian-born Alexandre Dantas discovered Jiu-Jitsu as a kid, inspired by watching  Bruce Lee movies while growing up in Copacabana. The Gracie success stories were highly popular in Rio at the time (around the late 80s / early 90s) and Dantas ended up in a gym run by a Carlson Gracie black belt.

Part 1 – Introduction

I really have no idea why this Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD features 7 different volumes. when the material could comfortably fit in three. That said, the quality of instruction does not reflect the organization of the instructional.

Even though the first volume only features a short introduction to the subject of double sleeve grips by Dantas, he immediately makes it clear that he has a lot to share. When it comes to grips, you want OG competitors like “Cafe” to teach you a quick and direct way to make them work.

Part 2 – Double Sleeve Grip Setups and Throws

As we get to the meat and potatoes of the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD, Dantas starts standing, explaining how to win grip fighting while on the feet and establish the double sleeve grip.

He spends the better time in this first volume explaining how to best attach to the opponent’s sleeves, along with super useful solo and partner drills to help you practice. He follows up with several takedown and throw entries, such as armed drags off-balances to set up a series of different throws.

This portion mostly features old-school Judo-based throws, such as hip throws, trips, and sacrifice throws like the Tomoe Nage. True to his Gracie Jiu-Jitsu roots, “Cafe” also covers double leg takedowns, before wrapping up the longest part of this instructional with a few more takedown drills.

Part 3 – Pulling Guard

I appreciated the fact that there si an alternative to takedowns, with guard pulling being the main subject in the third volume of the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD.

In it, Alexandre talks about a few basic closed and half guard pulls, which, given that you control both grips, are highly effective and easy to figure out. He also shows a jump guard that I won’t be trying to do in training any time soon.

The real value in this part, according to me., is in the guard pull fakes that he shares towards the end of the volume. These open up incredible combinations that extend into ankle picks and even direct submission setups.

Part 4 – Sweeping With the Double Sleeve Grip

you’re probably thinking about overhead weeps and the popular flower sweep given that double sleeve grips are the subject in this Alexandre Dantas Grips DVD. Well, you’ll certainly get a lot of flower sweep details in this section, with Dantas using a true OG sweep to set up a versatile attacking game from guard.

The initial flower sweep attempt goes into a host of submission setups from a high guard that he turns into a lasso guard, including triangles, armbars, and even biceps slicers. Dantas takes double sleeve gripping further by offering spider guard transitions as well, also complete with a set of submission-sweep dilemmas.

And yes, the overhead sweep, a.k.a. the balloon sweep also features towards the end, in the sections covering butterfly and Z-guard variations using double sleeve grips.

Part 5 – Double Sleeve Grip Passing

While somewhat unusual, double sleeve grip passing can be extremely effective, as you can see from the fifth part of the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD.

The opening focus is on dealing with the butterfly guard using sleeve grips and different passing methods, such as long step, pinch pass, and smashing. While most of the volume focuses on solving the butterfly guard, there are also a few chapters on passing the De la Riva guard toward the end.

Part 6 – An Armbar Setup from Mount 

Another example of how dedicating an entire volume to just one chapter on a mount armbar setup using double sleeve grips makes no sense. To be honest, the entire setup is straight out of the GB curriculum and makes no sense either, so this is one part of the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD you are free to skip over completely.

Part 7 – Knee On Belly Armbars

A few more armbars wrap this Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD up, but these are a lot more useful, seeing as he shows knee on belly setups. Controlling the position using double sleeve grips introduces a pressure component to the pin, allowing you to go for a few armbar combinations without any huge risks.

The Art of Taking BJJ Grips Away

So how does all the information in the Alexandre Dantas Double Sleeve Grip System DVD, regardless of the chaotic nature in which it is organized, help you develop better and more purposeful grips in BJJ?

Well, the first thing you achieve by going for the double sleeve grip is that you take away the opponent’s chance of gripping you. If you control where their arms go, then they can never grip any surface that gives them an edge, putting you firmly in the driver’s seat.

The fact that those gripping configurations work from every aspect of BJJ (guard and passing, standing, pin control, submissions, and sweeps) provides you with a unique opportunity to dominate Gi exchanges. There are no other grip combinations that provide this level of control over an opponent.
