Escapes are the most difficult thing to teach people in BJJ. Unlike attacks, they rarely work when you use them as step-by-step methods, leaving you with a feeling that none of the defenses you practice works. I know because I’ve been there.

Plenty of people offer a different way to approach defense these days, based more on patterns and defensive positions. The Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD is one such resource that targets a very specific problem in a way you might find difficult to understand at first. Let’s go deep into it and see what this instructional can do for your front headlock defense.

Developing Escape Patterns in BJJ

If there is one thing I’ve learned from learning defensive Jiu-Jitsu it is that patterns work better than anything else. Technical escapes that require you to “place your arm on the hip of an opponent at a 5-degree angle” and other useless information like that are absolutely a waste of time.

Figuring out a pattern of movement, and even better, figuring out when not to move at all is what will get you out of any tight spot in BJJ. That, and developing a sense for when you should start initiating an escape.

Of course, you can’t just lie down and let people submit and crush you, so those escape patterns must involve positioning in a way that kills any legitimate attack from a position, without any risk to yourself. This is why moving based on patterns that lead to a definitive goal works better than using predictable multi-step techniques – you can adapt to any given situation.

The Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD does not focus too much on defense but offers some great escape ideas to turn your turtle into a position of attack, especially when an opponent is in front of you, rather than a means to survive and stall.

The Curious Mind of Brian Glick

Most students rarely turn into their coaches and mentors as they age. In the case of Brian Glick and John Danaher, this is not the case. Brian is one of the first students Danaher had and one of the first black belts.

While Glick might not have entered competitive BJJ stardom like Gordon Ryan, Eddie Cummings, Garry Tonon, and the likes, he succeeded where nobody else has – following in Dahnaher’s footsteps as a teacher who understands the Gentle Art at a level different from everyone else.

As a small framed grappler in a time when BJJ was just spreading in the US, and was pretty violent, Glick was not expected to last on the mats. 20+ years later, he is not only still here, but is now leaving his imprint on the entire sport, through revolutionary useful concepts and tactics.

To date, there are plenty of Brian Glick instructional to choose from, and they all deliver. The one we’ll be looking at with great attention today is the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD.

Front Headlock and Turtle Escapes Brian Glick DVD Review

Brain Glick delivers a very solid, albeit somewhat lengthy overview of how to deal with the headlock from the turtle in No-Gi. His Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD is six volumes long, with a total running time of over  six hours:

Part 1 – Turtle Goals

The positional nuances of the bottom turtle position and the front headlock, seen from a defender’s perspective are the first things discussed in the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD. Brian begins with the headlock, covering the goals of the attacker, which leads to the things the defender needs to focus on.

The turtle comes next, with the same methodology of exploring goals that define the directions that someone using the position would look to move in. Key concepts like back to the floor, inside position, staying compact, and not reaching all feature in this opening salvo of BJJ wisdom.

Some key movement patterns also emerge, with Glic briefly going over shoulder rolls, how to stand up, dealing with the wrestling elbow chop, and outlining the key skills you need to be a solid turtle player who can easily defend the front headlock.

Part 2 – Front Headlock Escapes

The first part of the front headlock escape volume of the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD offers a really useful comparison of the goals the attacker has vs the goals you have when trying to deal with the position. He also provides the end goal – setting up a successful gaur with your head free.

Even if you had no idea that Glick is a Danaher black belt, you’ll deduce it from the language and terminology used in this DVD. Brain escapes just like Danaher attacks – using more than one move, which he organizes in trilemmas. All routes lead to guard, but they can be a simple sit-through, an arm drag, or a sucker drag.

Part 3 – Early Stage Choke Defense

The halfway point of the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD goes deeper into front headlock defense, taking us into submission territory. Brian focuses on the moment when your opponent starts initiation strangely, such as Darces or guillotines, as the perfect time to kill the choke and get out of the position with one sustained effort.

The choke selection begins with the high elbow guillotine, before moving on to target the weak points of the Anaconda choke, arm triangle, and Darce. The escapes Glick provides feature the trilemma movements explained in the first volume.

Part 4 – Preventing Back Takes

Aiming to provide a truly all-encompassing survival and escape guide vs the front headlock, this Brian Glick Escapes DVD also covers a common FHL/turtle transition which is back attacks, a.k.a. go behind.

In volume number four, Brian offers ways to deal with back exposure when you’re playing turtle by sticking to more or less the same trilemma motions that run throughout this DVD. He offers shoulder rolls and hip drops to help you establish guard easily, following up with a half guard system that also features a trilemma.

Lots of Ashi Garami solutions feature here, although I greatly appreciated the breakdown of tight waist options and the opportunities they offer once you deal with the opponent’s initial transition attempt.

Part 5 – Out of Turtle

This volume could easily be a DVD instructional on its own. It lasts upwards of two hours and contains everything and the kitchen sink regarding turtle escapes that potentially open up attacking opportunities.

Brian starts with an overview of the complete turtle defense and escape concept, before lunging into explanations of how the two-on-one can help you deal with the position. He also offers the popular route to stand up, as well as shoulder roll, presenting you with options on various ends of the exchange.

The K-guard features heavily throughout this part of the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD, with Glick using it to set up leg locks immediately after abandoning the turtle. He then covers some common attacks such as chest locks and kimuras, offering simple solutions to kill them off for good.

Part 6 – Summary and Guidelines

After the last mammoth volume of turtle escapes, a bit of review and guidelines is exactly what I needed. luckily, Glick saw the need to provide them as well, and he does exactly that in the final part of the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD.

This is where Glick clears up most of the key concepts, mostly through the lens of the trilemma movements he uses as the backbone of his turtle escape system. This volume is a condensed version of all the previous ones, offering a way to put everything into use and connect the dots.

Unfortunately, you can’t just skip to it and disregard the previous 4+ hours of material. It only works as a shortcut if you have an idea of what Brian is talking about. That said, I found it to be the perfect way to finish this instructional.

1-2 Punch Combos, but For Escapes

If you want to be extremely difficult to hold, you need to understand that escapes don’t work in a linear fashion. That is where the material in the Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD is extremely helpful.

Trying to get out of mount with an Upa, for example, is pretty straightforward, and fairly easy for the top person to turn into a great finishing option. Using the Upa to create space so you sneak into quarter guard, or to launch leg lock counters is a much more valuable use of the move. Even better, combining all of these is exactly what you want to do.

The old boxing analogy of the 1-2 punch works best in BJJ when you explore it from a defensive perspective. Sticking to that analogy, remember that that first punch is still a legit punch, not just a flabby, extended arm. Your escapes have to bi legit threats as well lif you want to work them in as combos that leave little room for the top person to adjust and counter.

Only Way Out!

The Front Headlock and Turtle Brian Glick DVD contains lots of information… perhaps even too much for most people. It is a good problem to have, but it may seem that you’re getting lost in the material if you’re completely new. The deal with this instructional is that it will only work if you demonstrate patience and go through it volume by volume. It is more than work our time and effort though, as once you do, the front headlock position is never going to worry you again!

WATCH TRAILER: Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD

The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is a very interesting instructional. It features a grappler who has grown into Jiu-Jitsu from the moment she was born but without all the constraints of the Gracie period. The result is a closed guard system that her dad, Vgner Rocha should be very proud of.

Jasmine Rocha demonstrates how to use a position that many take for granted and apply it to modern BJJ with next to no effort. Her delivery is precise and detailed, but we expect nothing else from the black belt who has been fighting at a professional level even as a juvenile. Let’s see what this DVD is all about.

Remember Closed Guard?

When was the last time you played closed guard? Let me rephrase that in a way that will make more sense. When was the last time you intentionally played closed guard? Yeah, that’s right unless you’re a 40+ brown belt (and. or above), you’re probably not paying too much attention to the closed guard.

I know because I was the same… until I became that brown belt (albeit well before 40). The closed guard is the one position in BJJ that has always been around, works with a high level of reliability, and happens during almost every match you’ll ever have. For some reason, people under extreme pressure revert to the closed guard, even if they haven’t played it for years.

Knowing all of this, isn’t it smarter to have a system that works from the closed guard? Since you’re going to eventually end up there anyway, it’s much better to be ready and calm as you enjoy all the options the position offers.

You’re going to need an equally effective skillset for dealing with it as well, but that is a subject for another day. Today, we’ll take a look at how a new-school instructional which is the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD can help you improve the most old-school position in our sport.

Jasmine Rocha – Jiu-Jitsu is a Family Thing

The Rocha family, headed by Vagner is a demonstration of BJJ being a family thing, focusing on competitive performances over anything else. We all know who Vagner Rocha is and what he has accomplished – he is a staple name in the sport.

It seems that his knack for grappling has transferred to the next generation. Both his children, Jasmine Rocha and Achille Rocha are following in their father’s footsteps, with the advantage of starting so early that they’re already getting deserved recognition in the BJJ world even though they’re still very young.

Jasmine is 22 years old and already has a few huge silver medals in No-GI World, No-Gi Pans, ADCC West Coast Trials, and a third-place finish in the 2024 ADCC. That is highly impressive considering that she’s only been a black belt for a couple of years.

A glimpse into how the pro grappler thinks and organizes her game is available through her first DVD instructional “the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD”.

Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD Review

The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is  NO-Gi instructional that consists of three parts, each focusing on a different aspect of guard attacks, and all of them tied into a neat system. The length of the material is roughly two hours.

Part 1 – The Shoulder Crunch System

The opening part of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD blends an upper body control we usually see in open guards, which is the shoulder crunch, with the lower body mechanics of the closed guard. This results in a very tricky combo that is difficult to beat and offers many options.

Some of the things we’ve seen Jasmine set up in pro matches, such as the Choi Bar entry and her signature armbar feature here, with lots of details on how to make them work. She also outlines how to throw in a head and arm choke in the mix, paving the way for the submission-based sweeps portion of this volume.

Triangles and armbars wrap this opening act up, with the very last chapter showing Jasmine’s creativity in the ‘slot machine” submission. It’s a combo you already know, polished up a bit, and given the best name for the position, in my opinion.

Part 2 – Bump Sweeps

The second portion of the DVD focuses on sweeps, but it takes a more methodical approach. Ropcha first uncovers how to beat the number one problem people have when sweeping from any guard – posture.

The first few chapters in the second portion of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD share some super important posture-breaking concepts, with the armbar used as an example to provide context. From there, on Rocha gets back to the e fast-paced demonstration of aggressive finishing moves.

The Bump sweep is her weapon of choice, and I was very impressed. In ever expected the sweep to be as effective as Rocha has made it. She uses it to get on top, take the back, set up triangles, open up Kimuras, and just about anything else you can imagine from there. The best and probably only hip bump sweep system out there.

Part 3 – K-Guard Options

The final portion of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD addresses the K-guard, which is a logical combo guard attached to any closed guard game these days. It is the butterfly guard of Gen Z, and as such, offers access to the missing link in closed guard – leg locks.

First up is the 50/50, more precisely, the backside distal finishing version popularized by Lachlan Giles. Rocha seems to have picked up useful bits from everyone, with the Donkey Guard featuring in a K-guard & 50/50 combo that is the closest we’ll lever get to a love child from Jeff Glover and Lachlan.

Still working from the K-Guard, Jasmine introduces more submissions to her system, in the form of triangles, arm bars, and Choi Bars to bring things full circle. She uses the same submission from the K-guard and the closed guard, ending up with a system that is easy to remember, more than versatile enough, and effective to the extreme.

The Guard That Always Works

As you can see, the closed guard remains the only guard you can rely on every time, in every situation, Gi or No-Gi. The fundamental mechanics of the position will always yield results, even if sprinkle some modern moves and principles onto it.

The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is the perfect example. Rocha uses al the staples that her father, the Popovitch brothers, and the entire Gracie family have used to win world titles before. She just adds some bits and pieces that she has borrowed from other top grapplers to turn it into a system that works perfectly for her.

And that is exactly what everyone needs to do. All cars operate on the same principle, but no two brands offer the same model. It is the same with the closed guard- it works because of the mechanical advantage it offers. Feel free to build on it as much as you want, as long as you don’t abandon those underlying principles.

How the UFC Plans to Dominate Jiu-Jitsu – Mikey Musumeci Reveals All!

How the UFC Plans to Dominate Jiu-Jitsu - Mikey Musumeci Reveals All!

Mikey Musumeci shocked everyone with his decision to leave ONE FC, but just days after signing with the UFC he revealed that the UFC plans to dominate Jiu-Jitsu, as the world’s biggest MMA organization has looked to expand into professional BJJ and change its landscape forever!

UFC Grappling League: A Game-Changer for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Mikey Musumeci, one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s brightest stars, recently spilled details about a groundbreaking UFC initiative that could revolutionize the grappling world. According to Musumeci, the UFC is set to launch a brand-new grappling league, positioning itself to dominate the sport in the same way it has with MMA.

They’re aiming to sign everyone,” Musumeci said, revealing the league’s ambitious scope. “The UFC plans to grow jiu-jitsu far beyond its current pace, creating a unified platform that eliminates the randomness and lack of professionalism plaguing many tournaments today.”

This new approach also comes with massive perks for athletes. Musumeci described his contract as the best deal of his life, hinting that future generations of grapplers could finally achieve financial stability in the sport.

For now, we’re just doing the Fight Pass Invitationals,” Musumeci said hinting at a UFC BJJ takeover. “UFC has very big plans for grappling. I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about them yet. Just know that there’s very big plans for grappling coming from the UFC.”

MIikey Musumeci Announces UFC Grappling League

Fixing BJJ’s Issues: Shady Promoters and Steroid Problems

Musumeci didn’t shy away from addressing the darker side of the sport. He criticized “shady promoters” and their questionable business practices, adding that many events lack the legitimacy needed to secure the sport’s future.

The industry is flooded with inconsistent tournaments. Sometimes they’re backed by dubious sources of money, which vanish as quickly as they appear,” he remarked.

Additionally, Musumeci applauded UFC’s potential for drug testing, calling it a step toward making BJJ a professional and transparent sport. He took a firm stance against steroids, pointing to the UFC as a platform that could bring integrity to grappling competitions.

Mikey has already supported similar ventures in backing Craig Jones CJI event earlier in the year: “Will I do CJI? I don’t know exactly, but ADCC I don’t really like what it stands for at the moment with the steroids and all these different things. I just want one professional organization for everyone to have” said Mikey earlier in 2024.

Strategic Move: UFC Plans to Dominate Jiu-Jitsu

Historically, grappling has struggled with low payouts compared to other sports. Even prestigious organizations like IBJJF and ADCC have faced criticism for offering limited prize money, with $20,000 often being labeled a “record-breaking” payout. The UFC’s investment could shift this narrative, as it likely won’t need to spend heavily to outshine current standards.

With his UFC debut set against Felipe Machado at UFC FPI 9, Musumeci is optimistic about the sport’s evolution. As the UFC steps into grappling, its vision of a single professional organization could redefine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s future and attract a global audience!

Let’s talk guard. People have been kinda hating on the guard lately, as Craig popularized the concept of getting back u pt the feet. If we put the wrestling craze that is all anyone can talk about in BJJ these days, the guard remains one of the most powerful positions you can play.

Even more so, the guard is an essential aspect of Jiu-Jitsu you can’t do without. The Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD helps us return the focus on the truly important aspects of playing guard, while still keeping the option of standing up open. We’re just going to choose not to use it so we can improve our guards. You know you need to.

Why We Play Guard

What’s the point of the guard in BJJ? Have you ever asked yourself that particular question? If the answer is to sweep, submit, get the back, or any other offensive aspect, you have it very wrong.

There is no attacking if you can’t keep a guard, which brings the focus of every guard in BJJ, open or closed, back to the subject of guard retention. The longer you can stay in a guard of your choice, the more you can control the top person, and attack because of the structure you have.

A downside of being extremely good at one guard is that you end up being one-dimensional – there’s only one guard for the passer to solve. That is where a system of at least three guards comes in, which means triple the work you need to put in to figure out retention in all of them.

Once you do, though, you’ll have a very easy time dealing with anyone who stands, half kneels, or kneels against your guard. The Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD is a top resource to help you understand this concept.

Chris Wojcik’s Pedigree

London-born Chris Woicik is a BJJ black belt under Jeff Serafin and one of the top prospects in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu today. He is part of the infamous B-team ld by Craig Jones and is focused solely on competition.

Chris is also the competition class coach at Serafin Jiu-Jitsu, where he went through the belts. Even though he received his black belt fairly recently (in 2022) Wojcik is among the top black belt prospects in the world in the -88kg division, ranking in the top 4 of the West Coast ADC Trials.

He also has a bunch of important wins during his colored belt days, the most notable of which is becoming a No-Gi world champion at purple belt.  His focus on competition from both the perspective of competitors and a coach positions him uniquely for preparing grapplers for the demands of competition.

Since he is mostly a No-Gi grappler, the Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD is an instructional without the Gi, containing many of Wojcik’s favorite and tested bottom game tactics. Let’s look at it in more detail.

Complete Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD Review

Over the course of five volumes, the Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD offers the best No-Gi tactics to submit people from different guards, without risking your positioning too much. It takes Chris almost three hours to put things into perspective, but he pulls it off in a way anyone can understand:

Part 1 – Guard Retention

The Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD opens with the key skill anyone using guard in Jiu-Jitsu needs – guard retention. The way Chris approaches this subject is through a conceptual framework, covering seated and supine positions as well as defining whether you should attack or defend.

If this DVD stopped at this point, it’d still be more than worth its price. Luckily, Wojcik keeps going, discussing the role that flexibility plays in guard, as well as covering group fighting, solving the push-pull timing question, and offering a very interesting approach to using frames for offense and defense alike.

The final portion of this volume goes outside the box of concepts through a technical overview of the octopus guard and the turtle, which many consider a subset of the guard. These set the stage for Wojcik to cover rolling and body positioning to deal with some common passing threats.

Part 2 – Leg Locks

A modern-day BJJ DVD on guard is bound to have leg locks feature at some point. The Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD does not disappoint in this department, offering several high-percentage leg lock entries from guards that don’t mess up guard retention.

The False Reap is a notable success at first glance, along with the different integrations of the K guard that always go with it. Chris then uses the entry to progress deeper into Ashi Garami leglocks, using the mto come full circle back to guard and talk about Reverse De la Riva as he concludes this portion of the instructional.

Part 3 – Upper Body Subs

Covering the opposite end of the body, part three of the Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD focuses on the highest percentage of upper body submissions that are immediately available and, once again, do not affect your guard retention (much).

All attacks here center around the use of armlocks, most notably the highly popular Choi Bar. Chris shares the basic setups and mechanics but also covers immediate follow-up submissions for failed Choi Bar attempts.

Part 4 – Double Guard Pulls

Arguably, the most interesting subject covered in this Chris Wojcik Guard DVD is the one in the fourth volume which targets the infamous double guard pull. Heate it as much as you want, it is going to happen, and when it does it is much better to know what you need to do.

Chris covers exactly that, offering solutions to this conundrum. He covers the situation first, and then offers both offensive and defensive directions, depending on the timing of your initial reaction. Both options utilize guard retention, and eventually lead to leg lock finishes from different positions.

Part 5 – 50/50 Guard

Offering even more in the world of lower body submissions, the Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD wraps up with a fairly short volume on the 50/50 position. Since it is a guard by default, all the concepts shared so far in this DVD apply, with the exception of the need for retention – it is very difficult to get out of it, to the point of being detrimental.

So, Even though Wojcik offers a couple of reliable options to spin in both directions when trying to deal with the position, he uses it more as a guard to trap the other person, forcing them to stand.

The Foundation of a Bottom Game

There are plenty of things you can do from the bottom in BJJ, but only if you have the ability to use your legs against the top person. Once the entire weight of the opponent is on your torso, you’re pretty much doomed to try to figure out defense and work double the amount that they are.

That is where guards come in. The guard position is the bridge between being safe in a bottom position and having the man to attack. Even better, it offers more attacks than any pinning position, as guards provide not just the option to attack submissions (both lower and upper body) but also sweep and transition to the back.

This is before we even start entertaining concepts such as the opposite of Wocjik’s like that of his teammate Craig Jones about standing up to introduce takedowns in your game. Not one of these actions is going to lose you points, and most of them end up improving your score.

Tactically speaking, the guard is an absolutely essential position to develop and master if you want to be able to do BJJ for a very long time. The Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD can help you set up the basics.

Stay Down!

Standing up is an option in BJJ if you know how to play guard. The question, though is why stand up when you can be more dangerous and attack with more versatility from the guard? I find that the title of the Don’t Stand Up Chris Wojcik DVD is just as important, bringing focus back to the position that defines BJJ and plays a crucial role in any Jiu-Jitsu exchange.

Purple Belt US Attorney Takes Down Phone Thief

28-year-old US attorney from New York expertly handled a would-be phone thief at Taco Bell during lunch hour. The purple belt BJJ practitioner reacted calmly when attacked and easily brought the mugger to the ground. Security Camerra Footage of Purple Belt US Attorney Taking Down Mugger in Taco Bell

Purple Belt US Attorney Delivers Quck Justice

During an unlikely altercation at a Queens Taco Bell restaurant, security cameras caught a moment where an attempted mugging was thwarted by the victim, who never really looked victimized at any point.

As he calmly ate his hamburger, US attorney Kyle never expected a man to approach him from behind and try to grab his phone right out of his hand:

He came up behind me and asked me for money” said Kyle, explaining the altercation on Reddit after the video started circulating the Internet. “I told him no and he came back to steal my phone“.

What was not at all apparent to the assailant, was that he did not pick an easy mark. With years of experience in BJJ, the purple belt US attorney made quick work of his would-be mugger after all the grip fighting proved to be more than useful.

It is apparent in the video that Kyle was calm and grabbed the attacker in what resembles a Russian tie initially, as he was still seated. Once he stood up, he changed to a wrist and collar tie, easily getting the attacker to the ground.

BJJ Works!

Kyle’s case is yet another proof that BJJ works perfectly for self-defense in real life, particularly in one-on-one situations. The altercation ended quite peacefully, with Kyle allowing the attacker to stand up, and leave, looking discombobulated while trying to keep the grappling attorney at arm’s length as he went for the exit.

The question of the best guard for No-Gi is on that pops up constantly. I doubt we’ll get a definitive answer but let’s use common sense – if something works for self-defense, it should work in any type of BJJ setting, regardless of attire.

Distance is another aspect that’s also always going to spark debate, given that both close and far-distance guards make a lot of sense. The EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD is going to provide those who prefer far-distance guards with effective solutions for standing passers, and those who dislike them with something to hate. Perfect for either camp.

Guards That Work in MMA

Eddie Bravo was the first (I am aware of) to decide to focus on building a guard specifically tailored for MMA. He managed to do it, and we got the Rubber Guard and all its variations as a result. The thing with the Rubber Guard is that it requires a certain degree of flexibility and works from close proximity, inspired by an old-school closed guard.

In MMA terms, it is better to completely take away the option of striking, while controlling distance in a way that allows you to safely stand up if you want to. Some glimpses of guards that offer these come in the form of De la Riva guard variations, especially the RDLR, but they’ve never really been touted as MMA guards too much.

Many of the great minds in the BJJ world, such as Firas Zahabi and John Danaher have used versions of these guards to force people to stay standing, whether it is for MMA or BJJ purposes. When striking is involved, ti si much smarter to keep the distance, and a bunch of options open, rather than constrict yourself to close proximity guards.

The EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD covers an innovative way of playing the De la Riva guards, primarily with practical application in mind. We already know it works, as this is the second edition of this instructional, but what we don’t know (yet) is what Ben decided to improve.

Down Under’s SBG Leader Benjamin Power

I’ve always been a fan of the philosophy that the SBG gym has in its approach to BJJ. Many of the folks there, such as Matt Thornton, Jon Frankl, and Stephen Whittier have helped me shape up huge chunks of my game over the years.

A person I had never heard of before within the first EMU Guard Benjamin Power DVD was Ben Power, the SBG head coach in Australia. With over 25 years of martial arts experience, Power (what a powerful name), has done it all, from Muay Thai, through MMA all the way to settling down in Jiu-Jitsu since the early 2000s.

Earning his black belt way back in 2008, Benjamin is very keen on the fundamentals that make BJJ tick and has devoted his entire career in the Gentle art to perfecting them. Given SBG’s propensity towards conceptual Jiu-=Jitsu, he fits perfectly in their model.

Before we delve deeper into the contents of the EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD, let’s just also mention that Ben is a certified physiotherapist, which, combined with his two-decades-long BJJ experience makes his opinions on grappling super valuable to hear.

Detailed EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD Review

The EMU Guard Benjamin Power DVD is a two-part Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional that contains just under 2 hours of material that delivers an in-depth analysis of the EMU guard. It is presented in No-Gi, but works perfectly for any setting whether it is Gi, MMA, or even self-defense.

Part 1 – Attaching and Sweeping

The EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD begins with an overview of what Benjamin delivered in the first rendition of this instructional, which not only refreshes our knowledge on the subject but also provides those new to it with everything they need to use this 2.0 version immediately.

After covering a few entries and the basics of the guard itself, as well as why he refers to it as the ‘closed’ open guard,  all of Power’s focus shifts towards disrupting balance which can only mean one thing – sweeps. The DLR combo guard offers sweeps in many directions, with the first bunch being backside tilts.

From essential tripod sweeps to babybolo combos that lead to the ‘kneemu’ sweep, this part of the instructional really delivers some great sweeping options for both Gi and No-Gi. The material professes towards another updated aspect of the guard which is the Rabbit trap control, and you don’t want to miss out on that one!

Part 2 – Transitions and Counters

Even though the second part of the EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD features more transitions, it still has a hefty dose of sweeps, this time set up from the Rabbit Trap. A sideways version of the guard also appears here, providing an easy route towards the back and/or leg locks.

Forward tilts ensure lots of opponent reactions in case they don’t work all the way as sweeps, which sets u another aspect of Power’s guard game – counterattacks. Effectively, these are re-counters, seeing as you attack first and then respond to the opponent’s reaction.

Nonetheless, they work, offering a great bridge between the back and front side sweeps and the sneaky inversions sprinkled all over the Emu Guard system. A few MMA-specific scenarios and adjustments bring this DVD to a close, along with a comparison to other guards that are ‘almost Emu’.

The ‘Closed’ Open Guard

Oxymorons like this really make me enjoy BJJ a lot more than I already do. To be honest, somehow, Ben Power really made the ‘Closed’ Open Guard work and make sense.

The foundation of his system is the De la Riva guard, which is an open guard. However, what happens if you cross your legs while playing an open guard? Does it become a closed guard? Zahabi’s RDLR lockdown works in a similar fashion and is super effective as well.

Power’s rendition of this concept is to blend the DLR and RDLR guards into a hybrid guard that somehow features both of them at once, along with the fact that it is an open ‘closed’ guard. The weirdest thing is that it works, and has a much broader application than Zahabi’s defensive-minded, leglock-oriented RDLR lockdown.

The EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD is a great resource, but it won’t find the mind of BJJ purists, which is great for the rest of us who love things that work.

Take ‘Em Down Under!

In No-Gi, keeping people at a leg’s length is extremely smart. It turns out, that ti is a good strategy for Gi, MMA, and every other aspect of grappling as well. The EMU Guard 2.0 Benjamin Power DVD covers not just how to keep the distance, but also stay attached in a way that lets you attack when you want and in different directions. It is a high-level guard that works based on fundamentals and seems to be the best answer to engaging standing opponents so far.

Omoplatas – you either love them and use them all the time, or you never enter the position because you have no idea what to do. If you find yourself to be part of this second category, you’re missing out on a whole part of BJJ that is super fun and even more effective.

The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD offers a very organized and methodical breakdown of the Omoplata, and all the options it offers grapplers from all kinds of different positions. It is very straightforward and easy to follow, and I’d recommend it to everyone, especially people who don’t like Omoplatas.

Catching Submissions With Your Legs

The legs are the strongest part of our bodies, and most grapplers are aware of this fact. They also happen to be quite less dexterous than your arms, which places them secondary in most folks’ toolboxes. That is a big mistake that holds people back for years on end.

You can practice leg dexterity for the purposes of BJJ, improving the success of everything you do multifold. Before you launch into complaining about how the legs are difficult to use, let me remind you that you’re already using them for moves such as triangles, Omoplatas, and different guards.

The idea is not that you’re going to grip the Gi using your feet. On the contrary, all you need to unlock the true potential of your legs in grappling is to start being aware of what they’re doing during exchanges. Star with positions familiar to you, like the ones above, and experiment from there.

People’s efforts in this regard have resulted in submissions such as the Tarikoplata, Barataplata, the Truck position, and countless other examples of positions and moves we use daily. The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD is a great resource to help you figure out one very specific way of using your legs to dominate opponents in BJJ.

Lyanne Perez – Sanity Jiu-JItsu

Currently, the holder of the IBJJF Pans title at black belt (for the second time) and with a long list of huge tournament wins in the few years she’s been a black belt, Lyanne Perez is a truly inspirational person and formidable grappler.

Introduced to Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager looking for self-defense, she established herself as one of the key figures in women’s Jiu-Jitsu from her early days of grappling. She has also been teaching since her purple belt, amassing experience that helps her conquer world titles and empower women who grapple around the world.

Leyanne got her black belt from Royler Gracie in 2019, after almost 10 years in the sport. Currently, she is the head instructor and owner of Ssanity Jiu-Jitsu in Winter Garden, FL. For those that can’t drop in to see what Perez is all about, her The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD is the next best thing! Check out our detailed Lyanne Perez Omoplata DVD review to see what it is all about.

The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD Review

I’m often cautious about Omoplata DVDs, as they’ve proven to be either hits or complete misses over the years. Going through the Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD proved to me that this instructional fits under the ‘hits’ category. It contains three volumes and around two hours of perfectly organized material that breaks down a full Omoplata-based game plan for Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

Part 1 – Getting to the Omoplata

There is a clear sense of organization and systematic work right from the very first chapter of The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD. I’d never seen a Lyanne Perez DVD before, but I can see why people rave about her being an exceptional teacher.

She starts off by presenting the Omoplata position from the perspective of entries and setups. Of course, she stars from the guard, but her entires don’t contain steps, but rather phases of breaking down the opponent’s resistance using your entire body, starting with posture and ending with arm isolation.

This first volume covers different guard entries, such as the spider and lasso guards, but it also offers ways into Omoplatas from the top, more precisely from different passing situations. and even side control.

Part 2 – Finishes and Follow-Ups

Once in position, Lyanne starts deconstructing the Omoplata finish, which I consider to be one of the most technical submissions in the entire sport of BJJ. She begins by defining the perpendicular Omoplata positions, and stars offering different armlocks from there, from shoulder locks, through elbow attacks all the way to wristlocks.

Basically, she attacks the entire length of the arm from the Omoplata position. Follow-ups include alternative Kimura finishes and a very sneaky Monoplata setup, among others, based on the opponent’s reactions.

As such, they present submission chains that are bound to result in either a tap, back exposure, or a sweep once strung together. Saving the best for last, Perez reaches the halfway point of the Lyanne Perez Omoplata DVD by presenting her signature wing trap.

Part 3 – The Omoplata Sweep System

The best sweeps in grappling happen from submission positions. I’m open to someone changing my mind, but that hasn’t happened so far. In fact, this Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD only reinforced my beliefs further.

Lyanne’s take on sweeping from the Omoplata is omnidirectional, offering different directions and different landing positions. For example, she has forward sweeps finishing in knee on belly, and backward sweeps that lead into mounted triangles. Once again, there is lots of focus on active work, riding the opponent rather than trying to force them into anything.

Game-Building Moves in BJJ

Most people tend to specialize in something when they decide to start competing in BJJ, but they often have to go back to the drawing board. The reason is picking a move that is not optimal to be the central focus of an entire game.

If you take a heel hook, for example, you’ll notice that you can’t really use it to threaten a submission, sweep, pass, or takedown at the same time. Only a few moves fit this category, with some of the most popular ones being Kimuras and Guillotines.

The more positions in BJJ you can go into without losing a move that contains a clear and serious submission threat, the better that move is as a centerpiece of your game. As it happens, the Omoplata is one of these moves, working almost all across the board (with the exception of takedowns).

If you want to build a strong guard game that ends up with you winning by submission from the top, bottom, or in between, focus on Omoplatas. Use the The Whole Omoplata Enchilada Lyanne Perez DVD for help.

The sooner you accept that you can’t figure Jiu-Jitsu out without defense, since you’ll be stuck in bad spots a lot anyway, the faster you’ll start developing a gameplan that makes sense, and even more importantly, works. It does take someone to show you the way, though.

The No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD is your best guide in the world of defending everything in No-Gi. After all, Ribeiro has proven himself at all the biggest tournaments and against the most fearsome grapplers that the system works, and ends up offering you multiple options to turn the tables. Who would say no to that?

The Defensive Jiu-Jitsu Game

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of BJJ defense? Most people see themselves getting out of a choke or armbar, or something along those lines. Well, most people are wrong, that’s why they can’t defend anything.

The defense has nothing to do with getting out of a bad spot – that is an escape. When you defend in grappling, you’re mitigating danger by trying to stop the attacker from having success with anything they are doing from a given position. You might be in bottom mount or have your back taken – defense is surviving and blocking anything, including transitions from the position.

Escape is only possible when you frustrate the attacker with solid defense, and that is the point most people miss. A good attack-minded grappler will make your life hell because they know exactly when to bail out on something and replace it with something else that will work.

When defending, you’re able to turn the tables here, making everything the attacker does ineffective, and opening up not just escapes but direct counters as well. The No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD should’ve mandatory instructional for anyone involved in grappling – people should get a copy with their first stripe.

Xande Ribeiro & The University of Jiu-Jitsu

Xande is one-half of one of the most popular brother duos in BJJ. Along with his brother Saulo, they’re not just behind some of the best performances we’ve ever seen on the mats, but also behind developing some of the key advances in BJJ over the past 3 decades.

The Ribeiro brothers were the first Brazilians to open up their doors to anyone, regardless of affiliations. When they established their San Diego gym, which ended up being the University of Jiu-Jitsu, they invited anyone to train there and are still operating on the same principle.

Xande is still an active competitor to this day, showing that athletes over 40 can still be competitive and win stuff at the highest stages, such as the ADCC. Of course, he already has a couple of ADCC belts, along with countless worlds, and pans titles.

When you look at Xande’s game, one thing that becomes apparent is how difficult he is to control, and how impossible it is to even think of submitting him – he only has 6 submission losses in over 20 years of competitive grappling! The No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD outlines his principles for setting up a foolproof defensive game for BJJ.

No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD Review

The No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD is a four-part instructional that outlines one of the best defensive games in the history of BJJ, proven to work at all levels. This DVD contains over 2 hours of super high-quality material delivered by Xande himself.

Part 1 – Standing

As the No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD kicks off, the focus is on standing exchanges and how to block all kinds of takedowns. Xande’s system covers defenses of both leg and upper body-based takedowns, through examples that feature classic super-effective moves such as the Uchi Mata, double leg, and single leg takedown.

Given how proficient Ribeiro is with the fundamentals, he uses head stuffing and sprawls to deal with most threats, in a way that makes simplicity seem harder than the crazy complicated stuff we see nowadays. He wraps up this portion of the instructional by touching on the subject of guard retention using his Diamond Concept

Part 2 – Guard Retention & Recovery

The second volume uses the introduction of guard retention in the previous one to launch into an exploration of the place of guards in defensive Jiu-Jitsu and how to use them to fight off pins. The culprit in this part of the No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD is top-side control.

Xande covers different side control variations, including the highly annoying Kesa Gatame while focusing on guard recovery as the main method of defense. There are a lot of hip motion-based defenses in this part, which rarely feature shrimping as we know it.

The escapes Ribeiro piles onto the guard-bound-defenses feature either upper or lower body focus, resulting in clean getaways. Following the setup from the previous volume, he introduces the dangers of mount here and tickles the subject of defending it by demonstrating the rat escape.

Part 3 – Mount and Back Defense

It is already clear that the third part of the No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD focuses on the mounts, both full mount and back mount. Starting from the front, which ties in side control perfectly, Xande talks about the best methods to deal with a heavy-pressure mount, which includes lots of hip movement again.

The second portion of this DVD is all about the back mount, starting with recovery principles to prevent it first. The turtle gets an honorable mention in this part, being one of the Ribeiro brother’s signature defensive tactics. A few late defenses and escape options feature towards the end, covering both sides of back mount threats.

Part 4 – Submission Proofing

The final volume is all bout the hardest aspect of defense in BJJ – submission defense. The focus in the opening chapters of this portion of the No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD Is on armbars from the guard, featuring stacking and some of those sneaky angles Brazilians have been using to defend them since Jiu-Jitsu left Rio.

ARmlock-wise, Xande also covers Kimuras and straight armlocks, before turning to front chokes such as the guillotine and triangle.  In fact, the triangle gets a lot of attention here with several chapters addressing different stage escapes, from early to very, very late (this late one is nothing short of genius).

Fundamentals to Master

You’ll see many people practicing bridges and shrimping along the length of a gym, labeled as fundamental movements. The effects of these movements is what is fundamental, not the movement patterns themselves – they are actually detrimental to success in any kind of defensive BJJ.

From a fundamentals standpoint, you need to understand what’s top and bottom, what defense and escapes are, and that you can defend literally anything in different stages of the attack process. That means you have options and there’s nothing more fundamental than that.

Defending will become easy once you stop thinking about specific moves and think about the effects of what you’re doing. If you’re not safe, staying safe, and getting even safer, then there is no point in doing a move, no matter how many Gracie Jiu-Jitsu books you’ve seen it in!

Xande Ribeiro does an exceptional job explaining this in his No-Gi Defense Xande Ribeiro DVD. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Are you afraid of getting taken down every time you’re in a standing exchange in BJJ? If the answer is yes, forget about going for takedowns, or even guard pulls – you need to learn a much more basic thing first, which is how to stay on your feet

What you need is a good dose of takedown defense, and you need it fast – no time to learn wrestling form the beginning now. The Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD contains all the fundamentals and more, on how to become very annoying to deal with on the feet. Master that and you can start doing some takedowns of your own!

The First Step Of Successful Takedowns

What is the first thing to do when you’re trying to hit a takedown in BJJ? Nope, it’s not grips. No, level changes are not it either. Who are you training against?

The one thing nobody takes into account when thinking about standing exchanges in grappling is that the opponent is going to resist your attacks and also attack themselves. That means that the first thing you need to master is how to stay on your feet long enough to engage. Only afterward can you experiment with attacks of your own.

Figuring out takedown defense is not easy – you can’t just sprawl against everything. Good standup grapplers have follow-ups and re-launches, as well as mat returns to kill your ‘just stand up’ mentality. So when you have no idea what to do, go to the source – if wrestling takedowns are your issue, learn wrestling defenses!

There are plenty of resources out there about everything wrestling-related, even more than BJJ. To save lots of time,e effort and money,go straight for the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD. It has everything you need and will help you figure out what you need to get next, if it turns up you need even more help than what Steve offers.

Who is Steve Mocco?

Learning anything grappling-related from wrestlers is always fun – even when they end up showing completely unrealistic and useless stuff. Luckily, the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD and the man starring inside it only fulfill the fun part of this assessment.

Steve Mocco delivers lots of key information on dealing with takedowns that are applicable across combat sports. There’s little doubt that he really knows what he is talking about – he is a National Wrestling Hall Of Famer, after all, and a two-time NCAA national champion. Moreover, he fought in the Olympics as a freestyle wrestler too!

Steve’s grappling background also includes prestigious wrestling awards, one of which is the Dave Shultz Excellence Award. He is also a Judo black belt and an MMA fighter with a 5-1 record.

Currently, Steve is a coach at American Top Team, as well as a wrestling coach at Lehigh University and his club called Mocco Wrestling Academy. If there was ever someone who could teach you stuff about takedowns, it is Steve ‘Bear’ Mocco.

Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD Review

Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD is a No-Gi instructional that contains four different volumes. The total running time is under 2 hours, and the material is organized like a wrestling curriculum – precise, progressive and containing more than enough variety.

Part 1 – Defensive Fundamentals

There is an immediate feeling of organization once you start watching this DVD. There is a clear-cut curriculum and methodology, that Steve has obviously taught numerous times.

As the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD begins, he first addresses what the pillars of defending takedowns are, covering the different ways people make initial contact via grips, and how you can nip all tacks in the bud right there.

Next, he covers a few key blocks that wrestlers constantly use, keeping the application effective for both BJJ and MMA. These include a downblock and cross-body block, as well as awareness and easy ways to deal with opponents re-launching attacks after an initial failed attempt.

Part 2 – Singe Leg Defense

Arguably the most utilized leg-based takedown in BJJ, the single-leg takedown gets lots of attention in the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD. Mocco shares some incredible single-leg killers such as specific sprawling defenses and a sneaky way to create space between your hip and the opponent’s shoulder.

Part 3 – Killing the Low Single

Still on the subject of dealing with single legs, the focus in the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD shifts lower, dissecting the threats of the low single and how to deal with them.

Steve once again demonstrates the relation between the single leg and the high crotch, even though he focuses on the low single. Plenty of jumping moves find their way in this part of the instructional, which makes sense, as the opponent goes very low.

In a sequence perfect for BJJ grapplers Steve shows how to end up pressuring people from the top turtle with ease whenever they shoot.

Part 4 – Beating the Shoulder

This final part of the Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD was one I enjoyed watching the most. It offers a principle known in wrestling as beating the shoulder, which involves focusing on redirecting the attacker’s pressure instead of countering specific takedowns.

The Whizzer, which his something everyone in grappling has heard of, is a great example of the method, used by Steve in this part of the DVD. He tops it off with several wrestling classics such as the crackdown, leg laces,, and Funk roll variations.

In this final volume, Steve also covers counter-attacking moves such as ankle picks and cradles that you can use to quickly turn the tables. The chest lock system to keep your legs safe is one I know I will be using the next time I am on the mats!

Developing Unstoppable Defense

There are many ways in which a solid defensive structure can help your Jiu-Jitsu game. This is principle that works for bot standing and goprund exchanges. You see, defense does not just address the immediate problem you have – it has much deeper and much more valuable effect than that.

First of all, by being able to brush off all kinds oftakedowns attacks, you’re placing a lot of doubt in your opponetn’s mind. They’ve probably dirleld their attacks coutelss times, and are now wondering why their A game doesn’t work.

Next, you get a piece of mind knowing that you can defend anything they throw at you, which will open you up to attack more. When you are not afraid of getting taken down, you’ll be able to enjoy your own gem, expanding it and figuring out cool ways to get to the mats since you’re not in a panic about messing up and conceding a takedown yourself.

There is lsots of work to be done to develop such a deep understanding of defense, and even more work to be able to apply it at high levels of grappling competition. The Mastering Takedown Prevention Steve Mocco DVD is not enough to help you achieve this alone, but it should be your starting point.

VIDEO: Tyson SLAPS Jake Paul at Weigh Ins, People Go Crazy!

Mike Tyson Slaps Jake Paul 24 hours before their fight!

At the official weigh-ins for the Tyson vs. Paul fight, things got heated fast after an argument between the two boxers ended up with a slap on Paul’s face delivered by Iron Mike!

Watch the Moment Tyson Slaps Paul

“Iron” Mike Tyson seems more than ready for his fight against Jake Paul! The 58-year-old boxing legend already won the first exchange, albeit outside of the ring when he smacked Jake Paul across the face!
During the ceremonial weigh-in, those in attendance got the chance to see the moment Mike Tysaon slaps Jake Paul live, and the subsequent video sent the internet into overdrive! People have been losing their heads over this fight anyway, and Tyson made sure that he added even more fuel to the fire – classic Iron Mike!

The Most Anticipated Boxing Match of the 21st Century

Before the legendary showdown that was Tyson vs Paul, we had to endure a tumulous build-up, one that saw the fight get canceled once already. Due to medical issues, Mike Tyson had to pull out of the original fight set for July 20, 2024.

Tyson seems to be more than able to fight at the moment, making weight easily and already providing Paul with a taste of what’s to come in the ring! The fact that Mike Tyson slapped Jake Paul so close to the fight means the tension between the two has really reached boiling point after a long-standing public exchange.

Jake Paul himself is in the shape of his life and took the slap smiling. His brother, YouTuber Logan Paul, however, took to X to voice his opinion on the subject: “My brother got slapped by Mike Tyson, f****** iconic,” tweeted Logan.

But a grave error This fight just became personal for Jake Tomorrow’s outcome will be utter devastation for Mike; the new face of boxing will be crowned tomorrow” added Logan.

The Tyson vs Paul fight is so big that many expect it to overshadow the UFC 305 event on the same night in Vegas. Despite our love for grappling, after Tyson slaps Jake Paul. we know what we’ll be watching come Friday night!

Tyson vs Jake Paul poster

Can Mike Tyson Handle the Fight?

The million-dollar question is whether or not Iron Mike can get through this fight without dire consequences, given his age and condition, especially compared to Paul. The main concerns are that Tyson is at great risk of brain injury, on account of both his age and lengthy resume of fighting the best of the best in world boxing!

As per Dr. Neil Scott “Cerebral atrophy means there is more space within your head, within your skull, for your brain to move. It means it’s more susceptible, whether that be to the linear, straight back and forward trauma or the rotational shearing forces” declared the doctor to Boxing News.

It’s those kinds of forces, with having more space in the skull for the brain to move around, that are the concern” according to Dr. Scott. “At the end of the day, the risk factors for Mike Tyson are much higher than they are for Jake Paul. I worry for Mike Tyson in this contest.”

The fight is scheduled for eight two-minute rounds which means Iron Mike will have to spend less time than usual if the fight goes the distance. Whether or not the much-anticipated match will get far beyond the now iconic Tyson slap at the weigh-ins is anyone’s guess.

Brace Yourselves!

Tyson will square off with Paul inside the ring at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on Friday night (November 15, 2024). The duo headline a very stacked card that was going to get crazy attention around the world even before Mike Tyson slapped Jake Paul live during the ceremonial weigh-ins!
