MMA Coach Robert Follis Found Dead, Possible Suicide

MMA Coach Robert Follis Found Dead, Possible Suicide

Robert Follis was a long time MMA coach who guided numerous UFC champions and top fighters at Xtreme Couture and Team Quest. He was very beloved coach and person.

His girlfriend Myra Fukuno found him dead on Dec. 15, 2017. and she confirmed his death on her Facebook profile.

There are many speculations in MMA community about Robert Follis commiting a suicide after he struggled with the suicide of his own brother for some time. Follis’ girlfriend Myra Fukuno did not confirm this and still no one did.

Randy Couture wrote:

Robert was a friend, coach, mentor, and philosopher of martial arts to many of us. It is with a very heavy heart that I write this tribute to a man that touched so many.”

“Death is like the sun. There is no escaping it. It infuses every part of our lives, but it doesn’t make sense to stare at it too long. That becomes a real challenge when someone you know, love, and respect ends their life. This is where Robert has been since his brother’s passing a couple years ago and where we are left now. It is very easy to get caught up in the urgency that comes from the limited span of our lives. It can push us to obsess over life’s meaning in the time we have. But obsessing over it, and staring directly at it too long can blind us to the possibilities of living.”

Follis was in MIxed Martial Arts industry for a long time. He was a part of Team Quest which was the house of some of the biggest names in MMA. Chris Leben, Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson, Ed Herman and many others.

He was also a coach at Xtreme Couture Gym but he left it recently to pursue his other interests in MMA. Until Follis was found dead he was still a personal coach to many MMA fighters.

The MMA community was struck by Follis’ death. You can check some of their reactions below:

Gracie Black Belt: Rickson is a Fraud for Supporting Child Molester

A few days ago we were about Rickson Gracie Black Belt David Arnebeck of being sentenced to prison for molesting a 15-year-old girl. The incident happened in 2013 and that wasn’t his only incident. In 1996, according to court orders, Arnebeck was convicted of a prostitution-related misdemeanor in Minneapolis. You can check everything about it in an article below:

Rickson Gracie’s BB Sentenced to Prison For Sexual Harassment of 15-yr-old Girl Still Trains with Rickson

The moral problem of the story is that David Arnebeck continued teaching kids in his three academies and, obviously, Rickson doesn’t care for that. A few days ago David Arnebeck posted a picture of him with Rickson at Rickson’s place what was enough for Rickson Gracie Black Belts to start calling him out.

It first started with Brandon Hetzler:

The story about David Arnebeck received so many negative comments from other Rickson’s Black Belts like Pedro Sauer, Henry Akins and others…

Henry Akins made a post on his Facebook profile:as a response to Brandon Hetzlers revealing the truth about Rickson training with convicted child molester David Arnebeck.

“Thank you Brandon Hetzler for bringing attention to this very serious issue. As we are learning now from Hollywood, silence only perpetuates the problem and makes us complicit. I was completely shocked, angered and very much disappointed to see this, especially because I brought this issue to the attention of the JJGF 2 years ago when Tony Pacenski was still involved.”

Akins received the reply from David Arnebeck himself- Arnebeck just posted a link to his homepage. The name of the article is “The Truth” where Arnebeck explains what really happened there. He also calls everything about this story a “defamation of him”. David Wrote:

“Hello. For those choosing to support or engage in defamation you may want to know the actual facts… http://davidarnebeck.com/truth/

It didn’t stop there as Henry Akins continued to call David out:

Henry Akins: “Hi David, I don’t think anyone is trying to engage in defamation. I think what you were accused of is deemed as a very serious issue among those in the Jiu-Jitsu community. What’s been posted comes from this article from the Star Tribune
http://m.startribune.com/metro-martial-arts…/221211121/

If it is in fact defamation, have you sued them and asked that the article be removed?

Also from your “truth” page which was obviously created by your defense. If there was so much evidence showing the girl had lied, why take a plea to such a serious offense?

Also apparently this statement came from your defense:
Sicoli said Arnebeck entered what is called a “Norgaard plea,” explaining that his client “was too drunk to remember what happened.” Arnebeck’s plea means that he doesn’t not admit to committing the act but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him.

So I guess the circumstances around the issue are quite confusing. Why take a plea when there was so much evidence the girl was lying and why would your defense make that statement. And if the Star Tribune has in fact engaged in defamation how come they have not been sued and you ask that the article be removed?”

David Arnebeck still didn’t reply to Henry Akins.

If you wonder if Rickson knew about David Arnebeck’s child molesting past it’s clear that Rickson knew everything about it. Two years ago Brandon Hetzler told Rickson and JJGF (Jiu Jitsu Global federation) about Arnebecks past, but no one seemed to worry about it.

Brandon Hetzler wrote on his facebook profile:

“Sadly Rickson knew about this incident for years. In fact, I personally sent Rickson and Tony Pacenski (who was running the JJGF) emails regarding David Arnebeck two years ago. I tried to do this in a private manner and I sent them the articles and the facts. They both said nothing was gonna be done about it. I then called Rickson Personally and explained it to him. Rickson said he already talked to David and he beileives him and he wasn’t going to do anything about it. At that point I asked to be removed from the JJGF as I wanted no part of that. Then recently I saw the picture of David Arnebeck doing a private lesson with Rickson at his house. This really upset me and I knew that I needed to bring this to the public.
I hope that Rickson just talked with David and believed him without checking the facts.
I hope that if Rickson sees the actual facts he will do what is right.
Maybe the BJJ community as a whole can come together and help Rickson to see the seriousness of this matter.”

Until now Rickson still didn’t comment on anything. And according to Ty Gay Rickson’s instagram profile is deleting all negative comments.

Ty Gay is the latest Gracie Black Belt who accuses Rickson for supporting Child Molester David Arnebeck. You can check Ty Gay’s video below where Ty Gay talks to Rickson:

let’s not ever allow people that have been convicted of prostitution or touching kids, around the mat. Can we just do that? Is that too much to ask?
You couldn’t pay me enough to let that dude walk in my house.
Please set me straight because I am crushed and right now, you seem like a fraud. And this David guy, shame on you!

Well, at least something is clear in this story. Rickson knew about David but he didn’t do anything about it. He continued to train with David and even putting pictures with him. We’re all still waiting for Rickson’s response on this matter and we believe it’s only about the time when Rickson will make a statement. So, stay tuned!

Helio Gracie PLAYBOY Interview – The Most Interesting Details

Back in 2001, Helio gave an interview for Brazilian Version of Playboy. It’s probably the most interesting interview in the history of Jiu-Jitsu.

In this article, we bring you the most interesting stuff that Helio said about himself when he was young, his family origins, his sons, his way of practicing sex, and a lot more… so, enjoy!

Helio About his Adolescence Age

Helio admitted that he had a bad temper in his adolescence. He wasn’t afraid of challenging anyone into a fight and he would approach people on the street asking them if they were fags when they would look at him strangely. But, once, when one guy trashed him badly he was afraid of confronting him. Helio was afraid and wasn’t feeling ready to fight the guy. He found out that being brave and being a thug are two different things. He was teaching that stuff in his classes after that.

Helio thinks that being strong isn’t necessary for being a good fighter. He says that it’s all about leverage and technique. He backs it up with a statement of him being able to take down anyone with one finger even at his age. And in 2001 when his interview aired he was 88 years old.

The Ultimate Fighting is the Invention of Gracie Family

Helio said that The Ultimate Fight (MMA) was the invention of his son Rorion. He explains that Rorion was looking for the best and the most effective ways of fighting so he created Ultimate Fighting. He also mentioned his son Royce who was unbeaten at the time of the interview and he backs up his theory with Royce’s success.

Gracie Family Origins

Helio’s great grandfather, James Gracie, was a Scottish who moved to Brazil after a misunderstanding with the Scottish government. James’ son and Helio’s Grandfather, Pedro was a banker in Rio De Janeiro and he had 18 children including Helios father Gastao.
Gastao Gracie had 5 sons, Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastao Jr., Jorge, and Helio, and 3 daughters, Mary, Helena, and Ilka. After the death of Helio’s Grand Father, Pedro, they left Belem and came to Rio.

Helio Gracie wasn’t a student of Mitsuyo Maeda

Helio’s Brother Carlos died at the age of 94 in 1995. and he was taught by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese teacher who was also known as Conde Koma. As Helio was the younger brother he wasn’t old enough to train when Maeda was teaching his brother Carlos. Even though Helio was considering his brother Carlos his “second father” he wasn’t taking lessons from him also. The main reason for that is because he suffered from dizziness and fainting while he was a student at the College Diocesano of Rio. Helio managed to convince his mother to let him leave the school just to start learning Jiu-Jitsu from him.

Helio and Carlos Gracie

Helio’s Fights and Debut in the Ring

Helio was 17-yr-old when he fought the Brazilian Boxing Champion. He was able to win in 30 seconds by taking him on the ground, mounting, and applying an arm-lock.
One of Helio’s interesting fights was when he was 37 and challenged by a Japanese martial artist. Helio described that match as very tough for him. After the first round of 20 minutes, Helio has fainted. His brother gave him ammonia to smell so he recuperated in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Helio had a Japanese fighter and a bad position, but the belt saved him. For the next two rounds, the Japanese fighter was just running away from Helio. He didn’t win this one but that fight was something that made him famous.

Helio About his Street Fights

Helio told a story of his Brother Carlos throwing a piece of bread on a seller of chickens. It’s meant to be a prank, but the seller got annoyed so Carlos sent Helio to deal with the chicken seller. Helio went down and choked a guy unconscious saying that when the guy woke up, he didn’t remember anything that had happened.
Helio also mentioned a story about a taxi driver blocking his way so he also choked him out and left him sleeping on the sidewalk. And a story about the truck driver. Helio also put him to sleep in RIO for wanting to fight him.
But Helio is also saying that he was never a street fighter but a ring fighter.

Helio about being arrested for beating a Luta Livre Champion Manoel Ruffini Dos Santos

Helio said that Manoel Ruffini was talking around that he will prove to the world that Gracies are nothing. After Helio heard that he showed up at Tennis Club Tijuca in Rio and told to Manoel that he came to answer the declaration that Manoel made.
Manoel tried to punch Helio, but Helio took him down and “gave” him two fractures of his head and a broken clavicle. Blood was spurting around.
Helio admits that it was foolish of him and he would never do it again.
After that Helio was sentenced to 2 and a half years in detention.
He was in jail for only 2 hours until the court confirmed his sentence.

Helio about his nephew Ryan Gracie’s criminal charges

As Ryan was accused of beating up a man and stabbing someone in Rio De Janeiro in a nightclub and accused of attempted murder and was arrested and put in Jail, Helio didn’t have anything to add to that. He just said that his children have never been mixed up in any activities outside of the law.

Helio about Sex and his Sex Life

Helio said that he never had sex with a woman without the purpose of reproduction. He also taught his sons and grandsons.
He’s sure that he could’ve slept with any woman in Brazil as he was a celebrity so, all the young girls were interested in him. After some women would try to get to him really hard he would ask them if they’re willing to have his children and that would stop them.

Helio said that he learned to control his will for sex from his brother Carlos who was a spiritualist.
He also thinks that sex is just an unnecessary expenditure of energy and that the worst thing is to have sex without fulfilling nature’s purpose.

Helio also mentioned his sister who was a nun saying that he can’t understand her and call her. He thinks that a woman should have a child to complete her mission on the earth.

Helio said that he was never used condoms and he taught his sons not to also. He’s sure that his sons don’t use condoms.
He’s not afraid of AIDS for him or his sons as he’s sure they’re not having sex with anyone.
And he thinks that people who are willing to have sex with anyone are nothing more than dogs.

Helio About his Wives

He was married to his first wife for 50 years. Her name was Margarida and he had three sons with her. Rorion, Relson, and Rickson. When his first wife Margarida died he married his second wife Vera. She was 32 years younger than him. He had six more children with her. He said he does not type of a guy who loves women.

Helio about Smart and Stupid Jiu-Jitsu Students

Helio thinks that it’s easier to teach stupid students because smart students think too much before executing the technique. He thinks that smart students end up lost and can’t function while stupid students just do it. He said that he wants to give his students good reflexes.
He also said that the problem with smart students is that when they learn the technique they’ll want to do it their way and not the way he taught them, so they will do everything wrong.
Helio thinks that a baby, young girl, or idiot is going to learn techniques much faster without asking questions.
Helio explains this theory by saying that Jiu-Jitsu is something for the subconscious, not for consciousness.

Helio About women who can do more and feminine independence

Helio thinks that strong women are a product of a weak men. For him, lazy and cowardly individuals with weak personalities are the ones who like independent women. In case women actually have no choice but to be independent. He thinks that nature did not create men and women by mistake, but for each one to be a missing part of another. The men should take care of a woman and women should take care of children.

Helio about Vitor Belfort

At the time of the interview, Helio said that Vitor is a beginner in Jiu-Jitsu and that he only knows how to fight with rules.
He said that Vitor Belfort was talking bad about his son Royce and he called Vitor to set up a challenge against Royce. Vitor replied to him that he only fights for the money so the fight could never happen as that wasn’t Helio’s style.

What’s the Secret of Helio’s long life and Health

Helio said that he never had bad habits. He was never drinking or smoking or snacking between meals. He’s eating fish, cold cheese, fruits, and legumes. He eats bread only once a day. He doesn’t mix series… You can read everything about Helios Diet HERE
He also said that he never had sex more than it was necessary for reproduction because nature is not stupid.

Helio Gracie: Making Love is an Unnecessary Expenditure of Energy

Helio Gracie: Sex is an Unnecessary Expenditure of Energy

In 2001 Helio Gracie gave an interview for the Brazilian version of Playboy. If you want to read the Interview’s most interesting parts check THIS LINK

What we find most interesting is the fact that Helio, even though the world champion, who was able to sleep with many women in Brazil, never wanted to use sex for anything else but in reproduction purpose.

Check out what he thinks about women, children and if making love is a bad thing or not.

I have nothing but approval for love between two people who want to do it. But making love just for the sake of pleasure is an unnecessary expenditure of energy. The worst things are to make love without fulfilling nature’s purpose. In other words, making love should be the instrument of procreation. I had a sister who was a nun [Mary, 85 years old] who lived in the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion, in São Paulo. That infuriated me. I would have preferred that she had been a bum. To complete her mission on earth as a woman. What does it serve to be a virgin? A woman with breasts, ovaries, who was born normally, should have children. Not to do it goes against nature.”

Helio answers the question of how many times he made love in his life:

Look, I was a world champion who did it only a little. In my estimation, I could be with all of the women in Brazil. But I never had relations with more than 10 women. And I only did it with women who accepted the idea of having children.”

When asked about how many times he really did make love according to the fact that he has 9 sons, Helio said:

It wasn’t like that either. There were times when I did it all night long because God didn’t cooperate. So I did it as many times as I wanted until [she] became pregnant, or when she requested it. I proved best my abstinence by the number of women I made love with. There were ten women in total in my life. That was my merit. I had 30 girlfriends, but I didn’t give a kiss here a kiss there.”

When Are you Responsible For Your Partners Injury?

When Are you Responsible For Your Partners Injury?

Is it ok to hurt your training partners during a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu session? When are you responsible for your training partner’s injury? The question for this video related to this question in a way.

Our friend was recently training with one of his teammates during BJJ practice. And during this practice he attempted several different submissions and attempts to finish the match.

Eventually he snagged an armbar and slowly pulled forward. After securing the position and his partner still not tapping. He began to apply pressure slowly until his rolling partner cried out in pain.

He let go and afterwards felt terrible. He asked his coach if he had messed up or if there was something to keep in mind. His coach told him that Brazilian Jiujitsu is a tough sport and accidents happen.

So, Jason is basically searching to get another perspective on the event that came from his submission.

In this video I share two stories that have accidents involved in them. 1 was where I accidentally injured one of my training partners after a situation where I became upset. While I never intended to hurt him. I did so as a fault of my own negative emotions.

I also share a story where my nose was broken due to accident during a BJJ training session once. This time it was an accident which was not fueled with any sort of negative emotions. If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video is helpful!

“…you reading this post may find it shocking to be reading this post. You may be wondering how someone has the courage to expose themselves that way. If you thought that way, reflect. The correct question is: how can one have the COURAGE OF DOING THIS WITH A HUMAN BEING ??? Even when monsters such as @marlon_gladiator will go unpunished in cases of violence like these in the square San Salvador, Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro. What right does this monster think he has to beat his girlfriend or anyone else? Is it because he has learned MMA and is a fighter who is in the right to solve everything in the beating? For these are not the teachings of the struggle. What argument or fact justifies this? None. Nothing justifies aggression. NOTHING WILL NEVER JUSTIFY MEXER WITH THE INTEGRITY, BE PHYSICAL, MENTAL OR MORAL OF ANY HUMAN BEING. That justice can be done. No #empanelman will pass us by! Rickson Gracie’s BB Sentenced to Prison For Sexual Harassment of 15-yr-old Girl Still Trains with Rickson

David W. Arnebeck is Rickson Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and a member of Rickson’s JJGF (Jiu jitsu Global Federation). He owns three martial arts centers in the Twin Cities area. On 10th of February, 2015, after 19 years on martial arts training, he was promoted to a 2nd Degree Jiu Jitsu Black Belt by Rickson Gracie.

David W. Arnebeck's 2nd degree Black Belt promotion

David Arnebeck’s Sexual Condemnations

In 1996, according to court records, David Arnebeck was first convicted of a prostitution-related misdemeanor in Minneapolis.

Back in 2013, on October 24, according to Startribune he was sentenced to workhouse for fondling a 15 year old girl as she slept in his house:

“According to the criminal complaint, a 15-year-old girl was asleep last December during one of her frequent overnights at Arnebeck’s house when he started touching her sexually over her clothing. She awoke, pushed Arnebeck’s arm away and went into the bedroom of a juvenile who lives at the home.”

Arnebeck’s attorney, Robert Sicoli, said that his client was way too drunk to remember what happened that night as he entered a “Norgaard plea”. The plea means that David Arnebeck doesn’t admit to the act but aknowledged there was enough evidence to convict.

David W. Arnebeck pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a gross misdemeanor. According to county attorney’s office, the sentence includes two years of probation and 305 days in the workhouse. His time in the workhouse can be served on work release. The sentence also requires Arnebeck to take a course on sexual boundaries, abstain from alchohol and drugs.

David Arnebeck is still Teaching Martial Arts to Kids

David Arnebeck’s martial arts school, The Warrior’s Cove in St. Louis Park, Burnsville and Little Canada contains of people of all ages, including children. So, the biggest problem in this situation is that After his sentencing Arnebeck continued instructing martial arts to minors.

Last Weekend David Arnebeck was doing a private lessons with Rickson Gracie. You can check it on Rickson Gracie’s instagram Profile.

Rickson Gracie’s Black Belts Comments

Brandon Hetzler, also Rickson Gracie Black Belt didn’t have any nice words for David Arnebeck as he wrote on his Facebook Profile today:

“Sexual misconduct with a minor” in martial arts and in life.

I think everyone agrees that we shouldn’t have people who have had “Sexual misconduct with a minor” running around teaching martial arts.

This is something I have mentioned before and let the proper people know. I will continue to call these type of people out when I get the chance. I must say that it bothers me that these types of individuals are still supported in the martial arts community.”

David Arnebeck guilty for sexual harassment

Pedro Sauer, one of the main Rickson Gracie’s Students replied to Hertzberg’s Facebook Post:

“I have 6 daughters, touch one and you will be a mess and Rickson Gracie would do the same…passing this to him. So sorry for the girl and her family who got involved in this situation.”

Even Henry Akins, long time, Rickson’s student replied to Pedro Sauer’s comment:

Henry Akins Thank you Pedro, Rickson has 2 extremely intelligent and beautiful daughters himself, I was shocked to see this because I assumed everyone in our circle knew about this.

I believe we’ll all agree that people convicted for sexual harassment of kids have nothing to look for in Martial arts and especially they shouldn’t be teaching kids. Yet, we are left to see what Rickson will say about all of this because this is something that does not go in his favor.

Is it all just about the money?

Guy Accused for Sexism in BJJ Class and “brushed” by his Instructor

Female BJJ Practitioner: My Professor is Being Inappropriate With Me

Top Reasons and Warnings That Your BJJ Coach or Instructor “Sucks”

Female BJJ Practitioner: My Professor is Being Inappropriate With Me

Female BJJ Practitioner: My Professor is Being Inappropriate With Me

Admit it or not sexual harassment during Jiu-Jitsu training, discrimination of female practitioners as competitors and unwelcoming training environments for women are only some of the problems women in BJJ face every day. There are more and more sexual harassment examples in a world of Jiu-Jitsu and it’s time to talk about it loud.

Recently, a female BJJ practitioner described her experience with her instructor and the way he behaves with her. She posted it on reddit asking the BJJ community for an outside perspective, whether her instructor’s behavior is ok or not.

“I’m really not sure what to do in this situation, or if it warrants anything at all. I’m almost positive I’m overreacting but could use an outside perspective.

My professor has long been pretty vocal that I am his favorite student. He says it at least once a week. I usually go 5-6 times a week, and he always makes eye contact with JUST me when he’s instructing. He checks up on me over text whenever I don’t go to class, and always checks up when I get a little hurt. This is more individualized attention than he normally gives students, although I will say it’s not like he’s glued to me all the time. All of this sounds pretty normal, right?

He constantly refers to me as “his girl”. And asks me “you know you’re my girl, right?” whenever we joke around in class. He pretty consistently talks about me to other people in the class (“she’s strong, right?” “she’s getting good, right?” “she’s tough as hell”) whenever I’m in earshot – I’m not sure about out of earshot. I took a few weeks off, and when I texted him to tell him I’d be back in class this week, he texted back “That’s good, we missed you, my (ethnicity) queen”. Since I’ve gotten back to class, he promises to roll with me every day so I can learn better and has amped up his texts to me juuuuust a bit. A little while ago, under the pretense of a conversation asking how my mild injury was, he asked me if I was resting and what I was doing tonight.

Is this weird?? It all seems super innocuous written out, but I’m sure that I definitely get more attention from him in class. I’d like to think it’s because I’m a pretty positive person and always show up to class and give it my all, but I’d love an outside perspective on what might be going on here.”

What do you think? Is this Instructor out of line and is it time for this girl to leave her gym as fast as possible?

Have you ever witnessed a similar behavior by your instructor?
