The #1 Reason BJJ Academy Owners Lose Potential Students and How Elephants Can Help

Gym Marketing Itamar

Let me ask you a question. When you promise a kid to take him to the zoo, what is he more interested in, the vehicle you’re going to use to get to the zoo or actually getting to the zoo and seeing the elephants?

It’s the elephants, right? That’s what he wants. He could care less about the vehicle.

Now, how is this relevant to your business and to your Jiu-Jitsu academy getting more students?

First, we have to differentiate between people like you and I, brown and black belts, from the majority of students. We have a unique and obsessive love for the art that made us stick through all the injuries, endless laundry and so on. For us, Jiu Jitsu is the elephant. We’re obsessed with it. We think about it all the time, we plan vacations around it and we basically ruin our girlfriends’ lives because of it…

However, the vast majority of your students, aka the white and blue belts who pay your bills, are very different. They simply use Jiu-Jitsu as a vehicle to get to their elephants. Jiu-Jitsu is nothing more than a way for them to get what they truly want. Their actual elephants might be self-defense, getting back in shape or joining a fun community. Again, they’re only using BJJ as a vehicle to get to their elephants.

If this bums you out a bit, it shouldn’t. You should be viewing this as an amazing opportunity for your business because you now understand something very powerful. You now have a new superpower. You now know exactly what to say whenever you’re talking to a potential new student. Just focus on their elephants.

When you’re talking to a potential student for the first time trying to figure out what they’re really hoping to get out of training with you. Ask them what their elephants are. If their elephant is self-defense then you can talk about how effective BJJ is and how it will enable them to protect whoever they need to. If it’s getting back in shape, explain to them how fun and effective of a workout Jiu Jitsu is and show them some transformation pictures from your students. If they just want to get out of the house and find a nice social activity then show them photos from the last team BBQ you had.

If you really want someone to join your academy instead of blurting out what YOU think is the best part about it, aim to understand what they’re looking for. Once you understand what they’re really looking for, you can easily explain to them why your Jiu Jitsu academy is the vehicle that will get them to their elephant.

So again, whenever you’re talking to potential new students remember to ALWAYS focus on asking them about their elephants. Then simply proceed to tell them “If you’re looking for elephants, we have awesome, awesome elephants in our community.”  It’s just a super easy and fun way to remember what to focus when dealing with potential students.

5 Alternative Submissions From The BJJ Triangle Position

Alternative Submissions From The BJJ Triangle

The BJJ triangle is one of the most offensive positions you can get into. And by offensive, I mean about much more than just the triangle choke. While the triangle choke and all its variations are highly efficient, there are plenty of other options from the BJJ triangle. It is, in fact, as much a position as it is a submission hold. If you see high-level grapplers attack with a triangle, you’ll notice how much they tend to transition in and out of other moves. The alternative finishes form the triangle position are actually more numerous than direct triangle options. And we have the 5 high percentage moves that’ll guarantee you get a tap from a triangle.

Why do we like the triangle choke so much? First, it is fairly easy to get into, regardless if you’re in a Gi or No-Gi situation. Secondly, despite many of nuances in its mechanics, it is a fairly simple choke. Actually, this is exactly how we learn it first, as early as a white belt. However, looking at it as a position of control and a launch pad for numerous attacks makes it even more versatile. The BJJ triangle also has the ability to work at every possible level of the sport. It is also highly efficient in MMA conditions, as well as a great option for self-defense, especially for women. Last but not least, defenses against the triangle choke are not plentiful and are not hard to counter. Especially when you have a bunch of submission options as follow-ups.

The Power Of The BJJ Triangle

Hunting for triangles has another aspect to it that is very attractive to lots of people. It is available from a host of different positions that include both top and bottom ones. The main reason the BJJ triangle is such a powerful choke is that it is done with the help of the legs. The legs are the strongest parts of our body, and, when used against one of the weakest spots, which is the neck, the advantage is unmistakable.

BJJ Triangle For a triangle, in most cases, you want to be on your back. One leg should go under the opponent’s armpit and behind their back. The other leg goes over the opposite side shoulder, and on their back. Locking your feet together here gets you in the “diamond” position, which precedes the triangle. From here, you can launch a whole host of attacks.

For the BJJ triangle, the goal is to get the leg that is on top of the shoulder to touch the shoulder on the other side with the heel of your foot. In order to achieve this, unless you’re extremely flexible, you’ll need to pivot toward the side that leg is on. From there, the goal is to get the other leg over the one that’s on top. This locks the triangle in place and gets you in the perfect attacking position. For a triangle, you need to switch the trapped arm to the other side and pull on the back of the head.

The hands-down best information you can find on the triangle choke is in the “Mastering The System: Triangles” John Danaher DVD. It is a 10 hour long, DVD set containing everything you need to know on every possible triangle variation. Plus it is all thaught by the best BJJ instructor in the world!

Alternative Submission Options

The power of the triangle is that you have your opponent’s posture broken at all times. The beauty of the position is that it offers submission options in pretty much each direction. Apart from the “basic” triangle and triangle choke variations you also have armlocks and different chokes. Some of the options include straight armlocks, armbar from the bottom, Omoplata, Kimura,  hand choke etc. There are more, but these are all but guaranteed to bring you a tap. There’s one more aspect to alternative BJJ Triangle attacks that makes them truly high level. That is the ability to switch between all the alternative attacks, as well as the triangle choke and its variation.

Omoplata From Diamond

The diamond position is considered position zero for launching triangle attacks. However, it is also a position of great control in itself. This means you can use it to attack with different submissions instead of finishing a BJJ triangle choke. This comes particularly useful in cases where opponents realize the triangle danger and start defending early.

BJJ Triangle SubmissionsThe focus of people trying to fend off a triangle is to prevent you from establishing the position. This means hiding the far side arm (the one necessary to finish a triangle choke) as far away from you as possible. Their next goal is to establish a wide base and try to regain posture. However, doing both at the same time is next o impossible. This means that if they lose posture, you can lock the triangle. Conversely, if they focus on posture, you can attack the arm they’re hiding. Since your leg is under the armpit already, you have a strong body part against a weak one. It is a battle you’ll always win.

All you need to do is push their head away from their arm, and turn towards the trapped arm with your head. This lands you bang in the middle of an Omoplata setup. From there, proceed to finish the Omoplata as usual.

Kimura From Opposite Side Triangle

BJJ Triangle To Kimura The opposite side triangle Kimura is one of the best attacks you can get from the BJJ triangle position. For me, it is a personal favorite as it gets you an angle on the Kimura that makes it ultra-tight and impossible to defend. The whole thing with this position is that it’ll have you confused the first few times you give it a try.

With this Kimura, you’re looking to attack the arm that you usually include in a triangle choke once again. However, getting an angle to establish a figure four grip is impossible from both the diamond and the triangle position. However, if you switch the side where you lock your triangle, you open up a direct route to the arm. While you may lose the ability to get a triangle choke directly, you get a very powerful Kimura lock that nobody can get out of.

Far Side Straight Armlock

A straight arm lock is also a good option when you’re attacking the opposite side Kimura. However, you can also look for a straight armlock on the far side arm, the one that is free. The reason this works so well, despite the superior positioning, is that people are not expecting you to attack that arm. Moreover, most people don’t even know there are high-percentage attacks on that side also they might even let you have the arm.

BJJ Triangle Submissions Armlock When the opponent is hiding their trapped arm under your butt, you get a great chance to attack the far side arm. Whether you’re in a triangle or the diamond position, the goal is to get an udnerhook under the far side arm. Use a palm to palm grip to isolate the arm and extend it with the palm towards your shoulder. Once you have it there, tilt your head to the side so that you trap their wrist. All you need to do now is use your torso to extend the arm as much as possible and use the palm to palm grip to place direct downward pressure on their elbow.

Hand Choke From Triangle

BJJ Triangle To Hand Choke FinishThis one is the craziest submission option that is available from the BJJ triangle. It is unorthodox, unexpected and arguably the most efficient one. It’ll take some time adjusting at first, but once you get the knack for it, you’ll be unstoppable.

The hand choke is also the easiest one to set up. Form the diamond position, the goal is to get both your arms under your own knees. Once you have them there, you need to establish a solid grip. A palm to palm or an S-grip work best here. You then pull your arms as close towards you as possible and curl your legs on the opponent’s back. To finish you pinch your elbows together first, and then extend your legs for a very powerful choke.

Double Trouble: Triangle Armbar

Getting an armbar from the triangle off your back is one of the first transitions people learn. Whether you go from armbar to triangle or vice versa, the connection between the two is unmistakable. However, you also have the option of hitting them both at the same time as well. This means you can attack an armbar with the triangle as a fail-safe option ready to go. Or any of the BJJ triangle attacks we cover today.

BJJ Triangle Submissions Armbar The option to attack the armbar usually opens up when an opponent really tries to posture up. If you’re up against a particularly strong opponent, or you do not have the posture broken correctly, an armbar is a great way of finishing the match right away. All you need to do is use the fact that their arm straightens as they regain posture.  Of course, we’re talking about the trapped arm once again. All you need to do is transfer the leg that is over the shoulder on the other side and you’re in a deep armbar that is really hard to get out. The best thing is, that if they decide to counter and defend it, you can switch back to any of the other BJJ triangle options.

Runner Kills Mountain Lion With A Rear Naked Choke In Colorado

Runner Kills Mountain Lion With Choke

A very inspiring story comes to us from Colorado. As crazy and made up as it may seem it’s true word for word. Mountain lion attacks are not rare in the USA, especially among people that like to run in secluded areas. Given the size of mountain lions, encounters such as this rarely end well for the human. Unless you’re a badass from Alabama. Then you’re the main man behind titles like “Runner Kills Mountain Lion With Bare Hands”. While we doubt he set out to prove he can choke a wild cat, the man deserves recognition nonetheless. As a disclaimer, we do not advocate trying to choke wild animals under any circumstances.

In every BJJ academy worldwide, the self-defense aspect that’s taught is never in terms of dealing with wild animals. And, despite the name of some techniques, like the “Lion Killer”, “Mata Leao” or usually Rear Naked Choke, for example, those moves are not considered smart options when you’re battling for your life with a wild cat. However, having that BJJ knowledge definitely can come in handy. While it is every day that a runner kills a mountain lion with a choke, it is now certain that it is possible. That said, let’s look at the amazing story of Travis Kaufmann, the jogger that emerged from his mountain lion encounter victorious.

Runner Kills Mountain Lion With Bare Hands (And Legs)

The event took place on a known on Colorado running trail. The man, now known as 31-year-old Travis Kaufmann, was running by himself on West Ridge, a popular trail in Larimer County’s Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, which is near Fort Collins. At one point during his run, he heard an unusual noise behind him. As he turned, he saw an 80 lbs mountain lion about 10 feet away, ready to spring on him. It seems that Travis’s running was what triggered the hunting instincts of the animal, as per Colorado wildlife officials.

Runner Kills Mountain LionThe encounter ended with 25 stitches on Travis’s face and a further 3 more on his right wrist. Given the circumstances, and that Travis was alone, this can be considered to be one of the best possible outcomes.

The first thing that Travis did, according to his account, was stay in place and start yelling, However, that didn’t seem to work. As the mountain lion sprang, instincts seem to have kicked in with Kaufmann as well. He did not manage to pull out injury-free, however. On the contrary, the mountain lion got to his wrists and face before the man could react. Although the cat was a juvenile one, it was by no means unable to inflict serious injury, or even kill Travis. Runner Kills Mountain Lion

Travis Kaufmann’s Incredible Story

As the mountain lion got hold of Travis’s wrist, the battle began. Travis actually kept yelling all the time, trying to scare the cat. Since that didn’t seem to work, Kaufmann went on offense. His efforts to fight the cat off sent both him and the lion tumbling down a slope. “From there it was just like a wrestling match — it was thrashing and it still had my wrist locked in its jaws,” said Kauffman.

As they came to a halt, Travis ended up on top of the mountain lion that still biting on his wrist. At this point, Travis sued his housecat experience and focused on pinning the back legs of the lion with his left leg. He was successful and managed to hold the lion in place. He then attempted to stab the animal with sticks he found nearby, but they weren’t strong enough. Kauffman also tried hitting it with a rock with his free hand, but couldn’t a good angle. Ultimately, he shifted his position getting his right knee on the cat’s throat. He stayed there until the cat stopped moving as it got choked to death by Travis.

“One of the thoughts that I was having was like, ‘Well this would be a pretty crappy way to die. Just off on the side of the mountain, screaming and having this cat wrapped around my wrist. Then eventually another cat comes in and takes me out, and then getting eaten by a bunch of mountain lions. That wouldn’t be an ideal way to go.’”

The Mata Leao Choke

The “runner kills mountain lion” story hits a very familiar note for people training BJJ. And, the manner in which he disposes of the animal, (from the back) is even more curious. After all, one of the most famous moves in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the “Mata Leao” or “Lion Killer” strangle.

The choke is one that everyone knows, mostly thanks to Holywood. As incorrect as Holywood’s depiction is, the move is a highly efficient one. The choke works in every setting, whether it is MMA, sports Jiu-Jitsu, or self-defense. Now, as it seems, it even justified its naming in full. While we don’t know the full etiology of the name, it may stem from a story like ours.

Runner Chokes Mountain Lion With Bare HandsThe Rear Naked Choke (Mata Leao) works from the back. One arm goes over the shoulder and around the neck of an opponent, much like a noose. Then, the palm of that arm goes on the biceps of the opposite side arm. the forearm of the other arm goes behind the neck, making a “figure four” lock. The pressure from the strangle is on both carotid arteries which prevents the brain from getting oxygen. The name of the choke though has no confirmed origin, so we can’t know if it can actually help against a lion. We know what can, though.

The Real Mata Leao Choke

While Travis Kauffman himself has no formal martial arts training, he did use a move that is common to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Well, it may not be common but it is certainly there and works at all levels of the sport. Apparently, it works against mountain lions as well. The choke in question is the Knee On Neck Choke, something Roberto Cyborg is famous for.

The choke basically has you on top of an opponent, with your knee on their neck. The patella of the knee should be right on the carotid artery on one side. Putting the knee on the throat is also going to do the trick. In BJJ situations, further grips help you finish the choke efficiently. In Travis’s case, the fact that the animal had his right wrist actually helped him choke the lion to death. Whether Travis chooses to take part in some BJJ classes remains unknown, What’s always going to be remembered, though is the headline “Runner kills mountain lion” and the strangle the runner used!

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ: Wrap, Torture, Submit!

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ

The Nelson hold is arguably the most famous pinning move in the history of wrestling moves. The standing full Nelson is something we’ve all tried to escape as a challenge when we were kids. Even today, it is a  powerful move if you know how to execute it, and the opponent doesn’t know what you’re doing. However, in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the move is redundant, somewhat due to rules and somewhat due to its limited effectiveness. However, a version of this wrestling staple is not just useful for Jiu-Jitsu but offers one of the best control and transition points in the whole sport. What I’m talking about is the wrestling half Nelson.

I’ve claimed for a while now that in BJJ, we underuse massively the moves that wrestling has to offer. We’re so fixed on BJJ’s supremacy in ground fighting that we rarely look past wrestling takedown. Just an example, the front headlock is a wrestling position, and look at what Danaher has done with it. Eddie Bravo’s Twister is also a wrestling pin, AKA the wrestler’s guillotine. And this is just scraping the surface. Wrestling, regardless if it’s Greco Roman, freestyle or catch, has a lot to bring to the table. One such often overlooked move is the wrestling half Nelson. It offers a secure pit stop in a place where BJJ resorts to scrambles more often than not. If you truly want to be high level, you need control at all times, and the wrestling half Nelson is one great way of getting it.

Wrestling Half Nelson

The wrestling half Nelson is a move that acts as a pin, both standing and on the ground. It is simply a reduction compared to the full Nelson. By reduction, I mean instead of having two of your arms under the opponent’s armpits and behind their head, you have one. What you lose is the ability to hold someone in place forcefully. However, what you gain is mobility to distribute your weight, and attack from a few different angles without ever letting go of the grips. There is also a myriad of transitions you can go into the most dominating positions. Oh, and there are submissions, of course. And lots of ’em!

I the interest of full disclosure, there are actually 4 Nelson positions: the full, three quarter, half and quarter Nelson. All work in wrestling and all can be effective in BJJ. However, the half Nelson is the one variation of this move, that you can’t afford to not know if you train Jiu-Jitsu.

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJThe half Nelson is fairly simple to set up. What you want to have for the “traditional” wrestling half Nelson is one of your arms under the opponent’s armpit, in a back-to-front direction. The goal is to then place your palm on the back of their neck/head. The best position for establishing this position is from the back, but you can also get it from side control, turtle, or even frontal positions. Once you get into it, the options are pretty much unlimited. Let’s take a look at some of them.

The Obvious Wrestling Half Nelson Options

The wrestling half Nelson does not require complex mechanics in order to work. Instead, it uses some of grappling’s most basic principles – posture control and leverage. What you achieve with the half Nelson is direct control over the opponent’s neck and head, and via that, indirect control over his posture. Being able to force the head down, or twist it in each direction means you can break and control posture at will. Furthermore, you have complete control over the near side arm (the one you have trapped), taking upper body mobility completely away. The best thing about the position is that it allows you to change the angles of attack significantly. Moreover, you have a free arm as well as both legs to attack, while the opponent can’t move into a good defensive position.

In terms obvious half Nelson options, you can pin an opponent just by establishing the control. You can also use it to transition to a bunch of great position, like side control, the back and/or mount. Also, from standing, you can use the wrestling half-Nelson to wrap up an opponent and take them to the ground very easy.

Pins

In terms of pinning with the half Nelson, the basics are the best. In wrestling, the referee position (very similar to the turtle) is the usual spot for hunting half Nelsons. The wrestling goal from here is to pin the opponent to the ground, belly down. In BJJ, you can also use the same move to force a turtled opponent to the ground, opening up very easy back attacks. Another great option is keeping the opponent in the turtle without an option to move. All you need to do is control the far hip with your free arm, and get put a foot on the near side leg. Your opponent’s turtle is not only static at this moment, but you can choose when, and in which direction you want to open it up.

Using the half-Nelson to get to side control also offers a great pin. The position of the arm means you can put pressure on the neck and immobilize the shoulder straight away.

Transitions

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ Back taqke From a transition standpoint, of course, the back is the preferred destination. After all, the position has you set up with an underhook already. The fact that you’re in control of the head and posture means you can get the other arm fairly easy. When you’re in turtle, both hooks are also very easy to establish. All you need to do is control the far hip, or arm, and pull the opponent towards you. Tilting the head a bit is going to ensure you’re’ successful.

You can also get the back from side control with a half Nelson in place. He, you’re going to use the pin from previously in order to be able to shift your hips to the other side and get a hook in. Form this point forward, you can get the back, or try to transition into the truck.

Takedowns

From the top, getting the wrestling half Nelson can be a bit difficult, especially with the Gi. The goal here is to get to the side of your opponent, most often with the help of an arm drag or a duck under. Once there, all you need to do is scoop the neck and you’re all set. Using the half Nelson control to get the fight to the ground could not be simpler.

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ TakedownWhenever you have a rear bodylock, you can think about the half nelson as an option. The valley drop is a great way to get your opponent to the ground. The trouble here is that it’s really easy for an opponent to get back up. this is the precise moment where you slap on a half Nelson. the result is no way to get back up, plus complete control and attacking options for you.

Not So Obvious Moves

There are some moves that wrestling doesn’t have in its arsenal, simply because they don’t fit the ruleset. However, in BJJ, the work much better than simply pinning someone to the ground, or transitioning. Moreover, in Gi Jiu-Jitsu, lapels open up so many options from the wrestling half Nelson that you’re going to wonder why you haven’t been using it more.

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ ChokeOne great option is getting the back and finishing from there. The good thing about it is that you can skip all the back control grip fighting. Having the half Nelson in means you already have half the choke ready. All you need to do is grab the lapel, like for a bow and arrow choke. From there, think more like a loop choke finish than a rear naked. Simply touch your half Nelson palm to your opposite shoulder and you’ll get a fast tap.

Wrestling Half Nelson For BJJ Kimura There’s also a great Kimura available. From turtle, you nee a far side half Nelson. Use your body weight and twist their head to pull the opponent down to side control. Once they’re flat on the ground, simply take a step into North-South and you have a Kimura ready and waiting for you.

Remember to give the wrestling half Nelson some time to work. Once you get the control and entries down, have fun and experiment with it. It is going to offer you a lot of options, regardless of the kind of grappling game you want to play.

Everyday Porrada, Nutella BJJ – What Does It All Mean?

Everyday Porrada vs Nutella Jiu-JItsu

Just like any other sport, BJJ is prone to certain streams of thought and inside “movements”. While they might not be movements per se, they’re certainly trends. Sometimes, these trends tend to develop into mainstays, redefining the world of Jiu-Jitsu. On other occasions, they come and go, sometimes making a boom and sometimes completely unnoticed. One of those trends that recently got worldwide grappling attention is the concept of everyday porrada. What exactly does this mean, and why is it such a big deal lately? Let’s look at some of the facts behind yet another fun and probably completely unnecessary BJJ trend.

Whether you choose to ignore or accept it, everyday porrada is a term most people involved in BJJ have heard at one point or another during the past year. It is another one in the line of stuff that seems to spread like wildfire. One such example is the Shaka hand gesture, which every grappler is guilty of doing at least once. It is one of the trends that stuck and seems to be here to stay. Another one is belt whipping during promotions, albeit highly controversial and, today, condemned by most. Other BJJ trends never really caught on, regardless if they were gestures, competition format attempts or just everyday phrases that get a hashtag. So far, everyday porrada got worldwide exposure thanks to social media. But is it here to stay? Will it influence the grappling world deeply? Only time will tell.

Who’s Responsible?

#Everyday PorradaThe man behind the everyday porrada movement is no other than Romulo Barral. He is into the man that came up with it but is the one that gave it a BJJ perspective. the thing to understand is that for Romulo, everyday porrada is a way of life. it stems from the Brazilian concept of porrada, which many BJJ academies implement. To English speaking grapplers, though, the phrase was largely unknown until 2018. To be more precise, until May 5, 2018.

The way everyday porrada escaped Brazil and gained worldwide notoriety is because of the AC BJJ Invitational event. They organized a matchup between Romulo and AJ Souza, which ended up being a barn burner. After the match, Robert Drysdale, who was interviewing Barral, asked him about his amazing performance. That’s the first time Romulo dropped the everyday porrada phrase. “The secret is to train hard every day. Everyday Porrada and nothing else!“ – Romulo told Drysdale. That was all it took for the phrase to spread like wildfire. Well, that and the fact that it was now clear what many Brazilian top competitors have been using as a hashtag for years.

Everyday Porrada

Porrada is actually an everyday term in Brazil. Loosely translated, it means “brawling”. In terms of Jiu-Jitsu, it has to do with the intensity with which a match or a roll takes place. Porrada is a common term in BJJ in Brazil and has to do with training all out whenever you step on the mats. it is a phrase that motivates grapplers to grind hard every day and giving their all. Imagine an academy full of killer competitors. They go at it as hard as possible, never taking a round off, nothing but high-intensity Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a world champion molding experience for sure! However, Romulo’s modern take on it is slightly different.

Everyday porrada means taking the porrada mindset and applying it to every aspect of your life. In this sense, the “movement” or trend is a positive one and is aimed at BJJ as a lifestyle. it is about living the “modern Samurai” way and improving the quality of your life through Jiu-Jitsu principles. Basically, it means stop complaining and start doing more of what you want.

Many of the world-famous BJJ academies that are real champion factories subscribe to the everyday porrada way of thinking. to them, it certainly is a way of life, as opposed to only the latest BJJ trendy movement. Some of those academies include Alliance, Checkmate, Unity, etc. Big-name competitors include the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Cobrinha, Fabio Gurgel, and plenty of others. The trouble with it, though, is that using it without living it really offends those who swear by it. Like Renzo Gracie for example.

Nutella BJJ

Renzo had his take on the subject as well. He is the man that is behind the “Nutella BJJ” phrase, which is the complete opposite of everyday porrada. Vagner Rocha, who is one of the top competitors, and a real testament to porrada training was actually the first accused of Nutella BJJ. The accuser is no other than Renzo Gracie, one of the true everyday porrada OGs.

Everyday PorradaWhile warming up for ADCC, Rocha asked Enrico Cocco to help him warm up by flow rolling. The flow roll made Renzo react in true Gracie fashion, asking what they were doing? After Rocha’s initial response that it’s a warmup, Renzo angrily walked away claiming he is not a fan of Nutella Jiu-Jitsu. Later on, he explained that Nutella is fake chocolate and he doesn’t like it. The analogy was that Rocha’s way of training, even as a warm-up, was unacceptable. According to Renzo, the roots of Jiu-Jitsu are in porrada, or the real chocolate, in his Nutella analogy.

Later on, Renzo’s Nutella BJJ term ended up as the complete opposite of everyday porrada. today, the BJJ community likes to throw “everyday porrada” around, but very few truly live the lifestyle. This causes all those that have grown up and live in the porrada manner to label them as Nutella BJJ practitioners. What a fun time to be a part of the Gentle Art, isn’t it? talk about first-world problems…

The subject of drills for BJJ has been discussed so many times that it seems pointless to go over it again. Yet, we’re witnessing the same trend in Jiu-Jitsu as always. People love to roll live, do not mind positional sparring, are OK with the technical part of the class and simply hate warming up and doing drills. As per Murphy’s law, the two most hated things are actually the two most important. Warming up keeps us from getting injured, for example. On the other hand, drills are the best, proven way of quickly advancing in BJJ. On that note, there’s a brand new resource in the  Tom DeBlass Grappling Drills DVD, that will make even the most stubborn grapplers change their mind about drills.

Tom Deblass Solo And Partner Grappling Drills DVD
Techniques List

Let’s keep things basic here. We all know we need drills. We have one of the best in Tom DeBlass confirming that we need them. So much so, that he dedicated a whole instructional to the subject. Actually, Tom is one of the most active coaches when it comes to shooting video instructionals. With 2018 just around the corner, his first DVD of the year is all about drills. That’s how important Tom and all other black belts, think drills are. This Tom DeBlass grappling drills DVD has it all – drilling theory, solo drills, partner drills and how to set everything up.

The Value Of Drilling

Speaking of drilling let’s go over the things we know already. Why do we need drills? Well, BJJ is an endless martial art, meaning we can easily get lost and halt our progress. Drills make us effective at the core movements of BJJ primarily, and a group of moves specific to the individual, secondary. With drills, the best analogy is to think about them as walking.

Namely, when an infant is born, the need to learn how to walk. It is a painstaking process that takes a lot of time. Walkling involves almost every muscle in the body and requires coordination and balance. Once we learn, though, we stop thinking about it because we’re doing it for most of our lives. If you stop walking for an extended period of time, you’ll surely forget about the nuances of doing it seamlessly. the same holds true for Jiu-Jitsu.

If you stop executing the most basic of movements, you’ll surely forget the details. And, as you know if you’ve been training for a couple of years or so, BJJ is all about the tiny things. the more invisible something is, the more important it is. This is how Jiu-Jitsu works. But, in order to keep those invisible things up to pair, you need to work on them constantly. Grab the tom DeBlass Grappling Drills For Rapid Improvement DVD. It’ll teach you how to drill efficiently and not “waste” your precious rolling time.

  • Solo Drills

As far as BJJ drills are concerned, we have two main categories. The first is drilling solo, which you can do virtually anywhere, as long as you have padding on the ground. The second one is with a partner, which is a lot more versatile and specific. Both have a place in Jiu-Jitsu, as you cant’ become an efficient grappler by choosing between one or the other.

Solo drills have the task of making you effective at the core movement in Jiu-Jitsu. These are the movement patterns that make techniques and specific moves work. With solo drills, you clean up moves like bridges, hip escapes, and technical stand-ups, at first. Later on, you move on to more advanced stuff like Granby’s and combining movements into flows.

  • Partner Drills

Drilling with a partner is where things get fun. Here, your options are endless. There are two main ways of getting the most out of your drill sessions. One is to go for specific moves or short sequences. A good example is passing the guard. However, any technique will do as long as you figure out a repetitive way to do it. Moreover, you can control speed, intensity and the level of resistance your partner provides.

The second (more advanced) way fo drilling is with long flows that involve both partners. here, you might do your guard pass, for example, and head into side control. the partner will then do a side control escape to get you in full guard and then sweep you. You then proceed to escape the mount etc. For competitors, these kinds of drills are irreplaceable.

Tom DeBlass “Grappling Drills For Rapid Improvement” DVD Review

The Tom DeBlass Grappling Drills For Rapid Improvement DVD is a fantastic resource to teach you all about BJJ drills. Here, Tom goes over the basics and then proceeds to offer the very best of solo and partner drills. He also covers every major position in Jiu-Jitsu. By the way, Tom has really strong basics, and it is the secret to his incredible success. After all, nobody has managed to submit him in 17 years.

The Tom DeBlass Grappling Drills DVD four-part part set, that reduces the clutter surrounding BJJ drills. With Tom, you get the bare essentials, only the stuff that really works, and the best way to train them. Tom’s coaching abilities are never in question, and the overall production of this DVD is spotless.

Open Guard And Guard Retention

First and foremost, there’s no particular distinction between solo and partner drills here. At least not in the sense of different volumes for different drill categories. Instead, DeBlass likes to show them in context with certain moves. If there’s a solo drill that can help your partner drill, Tom goes over it in the same chapter.

The opening drills are all about guard retention and preventing the pass. The first drill is one you’ve probably done so far, with the high leg guard recovery. However, you get a new twist on an old classic along with a great solo drill you can use. The following suit is sitting guard drills along with a whole array of inversion drills. My personal Volume 1 drill is the one that has you following the pass straight into a Single Leg X Guard.

Normally, drills focusing on the Single-leg X are numerous, given Tom’s love of leg attacks. The first volume of the Tom DeBlass Grappling Drills DVD concludes with leg pummeling and butterfly guard drills.

Half Guard Bottom And Submissions

As soon as the second volume starts, you know you’re in Tom’s favorite part of the instructional. It all begins with his signature position – the half guard. There’s hardly anyone better than Tom when it comes to the half guard, and now he teaches the drills that brought him notoriety form the position.

First up are defensive drills, dealing with common half guard passes. The weave pass gets particular attention, and it’ll never be a problem ever again if you continue drilling this one pass prevention. Half guards attacks are up next, with a really cool transitional drill that takes you from a half gaur Kimura straight into Ashi Garami.

The second portion of the second volume is all about submissions. Tom demonstrates how you can train to improve your transitions between submissions, as well as submission, holds themselves. They include both top and bottom submissions.

Top Position And More Submissions

The third portion of the Tom DeBlass Grappling Drills DVD begins in the mount. Mount retention is one of the things that is hard for grapplers of all levels. Tom offers universally effective concepts along with the drills to reinforce them.

In terms of submission drills, this is where things get a bit advanced. Tom goes over some traps and baits, like getting the triangle off an opponent’s guard pass. There is also a great drill on the subject of escaping side control that ends with a direct attacking threat. Another extremely essential leg pummeling drills also find it’s the way here. But Tom does not stop there and introduces a follow-up drill in regards to inside leg control which is fundamental for leg locks.

Escapes And Flows

Finally, it is time to put theory into practice. the first three volumes of the Tom Deblass Grappling Drills DVD were all about the technical aspects of solo and partner drills. The final one goes more into how to put things together as a system. However, before teaching that, Tom has a couple of escape drills he shares. The subjects are back escapes and half guard pummels.

Organizing every drill Tom shares into one continuous flow is impossible. Still, Tom does have a way of organizing specific subjects into cool flows. He teaches how you can build your own flows, according to needs and level. Moreover, he is going to teach you how to organize drills in a manner that’ll help you fall in love with them. Not to mention how good your Jiu-Jitsu is about to get!

Ricky Lundell  – “1% Better Every Day” (DVD & E-Book)
Ricky Lundell DVD 1 % better Every Day

Training strength and conditioning from grappling initially started with copying bodybuilding routines. Back then, things were simple but didn’t really relate to the needs grapplers have. As it evolved, strength and conditioning went into overdrive. It became unbelievably complex, requiring high-tech facilities only a few have access to. Luckily latest trends have strength and conditioning going back to basics. However, going simply does not mean going back to ineffective bodybuilding routines. It just means using what’s useful and disregarding everything else. With the “1 5 better every day” Ricky Lundell DVD & E-book bundle you get just that!

Ricky Lundell

Why should you listen to Ricky Lundell about strength and conditioning for BJJ? We’ll divide the answer to that question into two parts. First, we’ll explore Ricky’s strength and conditioning credentials. Next, we’ll see why he knows exactly what BJJ athletes need to get better.

In terms of strength and conditioning, Ricky has been in and out of gyms his entire life. As a wrestler, he understood the need of strength very early on. So, he spent a lifetime experimenting in the weight room, along with his incredible grappling developments. His efforts resulted in the best strength system for grapplers that exists today!

As a grappler, Lundell is a 4th-degree black belt under Master Pedro Sauer. It doesn’t get more legit than that. Actually, he is the youngest grappler to get a 4th-degree black belt at 31. Lundell was also an MMA fighter and a Pancrase World Champion. Today, Lundell is the head wrestling coach at Bishop Gorman High School. He also teaches MMA and BJJ, along with specialized strength and conditioning. Some of the fighters to train with him are Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey, Frank Mir, Miesha Tate, and many others. Now, all his strength and conditioning knowledge is available with the Ricky Lundell DVD & E-book Bundle.

The “1 % Improvement Movement

Ricky Lundell DVD & E-bookApart from being a high-level BJJ black belt, world-class grappler and an incredible strength coach, Ricky is also a motivational speaker. He came up with the “1 % Improvement Movement” as a challenge to himself. Now, he uses it as his day to day philosophy in both life and training.

Based on the ancient Japanese principle of Kaizen, the idea is that you need to achieve continuous improvement. 1 % better every day is a great way of putting this into perspective. Lundell took it literally and decided to squat 1% more weight every day. The result? He went from a 275 lbs squat to a 600 lbs squat in record time.

Later on, he applied this philosophy to every aspect of his training. Today, he even teaches grappling and MMA with the same concept as the foundation. As Ricky puts it, the idea is to do something that might make you afraid every day. It is the recipe that guarantees success – when you do it in small increments. The 1 % better Every Day Ricky Lundell DVD will definitely turn you into a grappling beast in next to no time!

Ricky Lundell DVD “1% Better Every Day Strength Building System”

Ricky’s DVD comes in a very familiar setup. It is divided into four volumes, each tackling specifics of his system. While he initially applied his 1 % Improvement methodology to the back squat, here he offers a complete training system. You’ll get stronger, you’ll get more explosive and you’ll get faster without a doubt. The gas tank that’ll allow you to forget about round duration is just a byproduct.

Each volume works by taking you through specific movement patterns that apply to grapple. The exercise or exercises go first, followed by programming and correct ways to train. With Ricky’s training methods, you’re done and dusted in thirty minutes, leaving you ample time to grapple or go about your day. The unique portion of this Ricky Lundell DVD is that he offers incredible insider tips on executing the movements. From small grip adjustments to tightening the correct muscles, you’ll become extremely efficient at lifting weights.

Snatches, Cleans And Squats DVD- The Preparation

Part one starts with the all-important warm-up. there’s no way you can go about doing Olympic lifts if you do not warm your body properly. As Ricky says, only full body lifts at high velocities can turn you into a grappling machine. That said, if you do not prepare for them, you’ll most likely get injured. that’s why this Ricky Lundell DVD opens with an extensive and efficiently warm up.

Next up, Ricky takes us through the very basics of how to load and unload the bar. Remember, Olympic lifting is a sport in its own and has a lot of details to it. safely manipulating the equipment is a precursor to effective training. He also touches on the subject of training to failure and when you should and shouldn’t do it. The first volume wraps up with a few key pointers on tightening the bar. Now you’re ready to get right int the meat and potatoes of the system.

Snatch & Cleans DVD – Execution

Ricky Lundell DVD As previously mentioned, Olympic lifting is a sport of its own. it is also the arguably most efficient way of lifting very heavy weights very fast. The adaptations that you get in return are nothing sort of astonishing. Here. Ricky goes over the basic requirements when it comes to positioning and flexibility for the most challenging Olympic lift – the snatch. Lundell has an awesome system to take you through a progression of training with the snatch, explaining how many reps, sets and rest periods you should use.

The staple of Olympic weightlifting is the subject of the second half of this volume – the clean. As far as grappling goes, this is probably the most effective fit you can do. Once again, you go through the same steps as the snatch. Ricky starts with an introduction to form and posture. he then talks about tips and tricks like rolling our the muscles, before finishing with a complete progressive program.

Front And Back Squats DVD – Execution

In DVD number 3, Lundell finally arrives at his bread and butter – the squat. Here, he goes deep into squats, dissecting both the front and back squats. First up are front squats, which although harder, are better for BJJ, given the frontal loading. Of course, you get a run around of the required equipment as well as all the execution details. As you probably guessed, the next chapter is the progressions and workout program details.

the same then happens for the back squat. Form and execution explanation paves the way for the program. Keep in mind that all the programs in this system are interchangeable and work together to build a complete training plan.

The 1 % Improvement Movement Philosophy DVD

The final piece of the Ricky Lundell DVD is a bit more theoretical. All the knowledge of progressions and execution of exercises won’t help if you’re not improving constantly. The theory behind the method is as important as the training method itself. Luckily, Ricky is a motivational speaker on top of being an exceptional coach. That means you get the ultimate explanation of the 1 % Improvement Movement philosophy as well as a way to implement it in your training. As a bonus, this also includes implementing it into your grappling training.

The E-Book

Finally, for all of you that have unanswered questions after the four-part Ricky Lundell DVD, there’s also an E-book included in the deal. In it, you get in-depth information on the programming and workout systematization. You also get details on the exercises, as well as some variations in case you have trouble executing the fundamental ones. All in all, you get 4 DVDs and E-book covering ways in which you can get stronger, faster and leaner for BJJ. What more could you want? Not to mention that the method is simple and requires minimal equipment.

I don’t know about you, but I’m off squatting. Oss!
