BJJ Muscle: How Much Is Too Much For Effective Grappling?

How To Build BJJ Muscle Mass

Time to tackle an age-old strength question when it comes to martial arts. Is having a lot of muscle any beneficial for a martial artist? If so, then how much muscle is enough muscle to be effective at grappling? Jiu-Jitsu is an art that can fit anyone, regardless of body type, athletic abilities, age or gender. That said, does having a certain amount of muscle mass helps you be better in Jiu-Jitsu? Is there a point of diminishing returns when it comes to muscles? When it comes to aesthetics, we all want to be muscular and ripped, that’s a given. Still, there is such a thing as an effective BJJ muscle mass. it is all a question of balance, as is often the case.

The age-old view on muscle mass for a martial artist is that big muscles will slow you down. We had this so drilled into us that nobody used to even try and touch a heavier weight back in the day. Ligen dumbbells and a jump rope were the favorite training tools of the martial artists of the last century. After the turn of the century and the rise of sports like MMA, strength, and conditioning suddenly boomed on to the stage. Looking to make up for years of propaganda, strength training did take the complete opposite route. Soon, people were training like bodybuilders when preparing for martial arts competitions. Luckily, the frenzy has died down somewhat so now people are actually finding a balance between necessary BJJ muscle and ineffective beach muscles.

Strength To Weight Ration For Grappling

When you take a look at grapplers from other arts, you’re bound to see some impressive physiques. Some might even be too impressive. Regardless of how they look, a lot of the performance efforts is down to how functional that muscle mass is. Wrestlers and Judokas are notorious for being dense and rugged, and they’re still highly effective in competition.

How to Train For Functional BJJ Muscle MassThe one thing to consider here is the way in which muscle is used. Wrestlers usually fight with repeated explosive bursts that do not have a long duration. Basically, they’re sprinting. A lot of muscle, particularly fast twitch muscle does the job great here. With judo, it is much of the same. Apart form grip engagement which is pretty much constant, major efforts are short and powerful. However, when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu, particularly a match going in excess of 5 minutes, the variables change significantly.

BJJ is much closer to MMA in the sense of strength and conditioning requirements than it is to other grappling martial arts. In Jiu-Jitsu it is much more important how much of the BJJ muscle you have in terms of your weight. The goal is to be as strong as possible for your weight class, without really putting on too much bulk. This can be tricky, though, as there no strength without muscle, but you can have too much muscle without actually having an appropriate ratio of strength.

How Much BJJ Muscle Is Enough?

So, how much muscle do w need for effective grappling? There are several things we need to take into account here. First up, let’s look at some of the drawbacks of too much muscle.

Big muscles require a lot of oxygen to work, which means you need to have an appropriately developed cardiovascular system. In plain terms, you need to be in tremendous shape to allow those muscles to work for the duration of a grappling match. This is quite hard to dial in though unless you’re paying a professional a lot to do it for you.

Next, bigger muscles actually do limit mobility, While big muscles on the legs will mostly help your BJJ, large shoulders mean that you’ll struggle with mobility a lot. Not only that, but tight muscles reduce flexibility, which as we know wi essential for Jiu-Jitsu. Moreover, training to retain a lot of muscle mass requires time and does hinder your recovery times. In essence, having too much muscle has no real benefits for the Jiu-Jitsu fighter.

When we’re talking about what is the sweet spot for BJJ muscle mass, we have to look at functionality. Imagine a bodybuilder and a gymnast. Both can carry lots of muscle but a bodybuilder will never be able to do stuff that a gymnast does. So when you’re thinking about BJJ muscle, think more of a gymnast-like build, or a swimmers build, rather than that of a bodybuilder.

BJJ Strength Training

How Much BJJ Muscle Do You Really Need ?To be completely honest, while people did run from weights like from the Devil himself, it was not always the case. If you look at old training methods from Japan, people that trained Karate, Judo, etc almost always trained for strength. They did so using logs, stones, vases filled with water, etc. It did not show any of them down, did it?

This old school approach can still teach us a lot about strength training and muscle building for BJJ. Basically, you want to stay away from bodybuilding, that much is apparent by now. However, you might also want to give powerlifting and Olympic lifting a rest while you’re at it. All these methods tend to create tension and demand in the muscles, resulting in hypertrophy and/or tension and loss of flexibility and mobility. Instead, look at high-level kettlebell training, gymnastic training, and even Crossfit as long as you manage to program it adequately.

Mike Perry Kettlebells for BJJSpeaking of kettlebells for Jiu-Jitsu, make sure you check out Mike Perry’s DVD Instructional “Kettlebell Essentials”. It is done by a BJJ guy for BJJ athletes and it’ll give you just the right amount of BJJ muscle and strength to dominate on the mats.

Conclusion

All in all, having muscles as a grappler is always a good idea. It is the amount of muscle and the way you obtain it that matters way more. As long as you do not get your strength routines from Muscle & Fitness and the like you’ll be fine. Just remember that you don’t have to be big to be strong, and you need to always aim to maintain mobility! Keep that in mind and use some of the resources we offer to get you in crazy shape for BJJ!

How To Safely Practice Takedowns In BJJ

How to Safely Train Takedowns In BJJ and Avoid injuries

Now that leg locks are no longer the scariest technique in Jiu-Jitsu, we all needed a new culprit. Or better said an old one. Training takedowns in BJJ is usually not a priority for most people. Even those that compete a lot, tend to develop a lot more attention to the ground aspect. In that sense, we tend to look at grappling on the ground as quantum physics and training takedowns as calculus 101. Taking takedowns for granted is what makes them dangerous in BJJ. That said, they remain the number one source of really nasty, sometimes career-ending injuries in any martial art that utilizes them. Still, we most definitely need them if we’re to ever get to the ground. So, how do we proceed?

The one main difference between training leg locks and takedowns in BJJ is how we train them. With leg locks, we tend to stay on the ground and look for dominant positioning. In that sense, it is clear who is attacking and who is defending. On the feet, we face many more unpredictable variables. The fact that we’re on the feet makes things a lot more complicated, mainly due to gravity. Three the fact that we”re actually trying to get to the ground, so you can throw in inertia as well. Plus, takedown exchanges tend to get really scrappy, sometimes so much so that it is difficult to know who’s attacking and who’s defending. Couple this with how much people tend to slack when it comes to takedowns and the recipe for disaster is complete.

The Risks Of Training Takedowns in BJJ

Takedown training, specific sparring or live rolling with takedowns are the leading causes of injuries in grappling. In a sport where the goal is to stretch and crank people’s limbs, this seems contrary to common sense. However, it is not. To put it bluntly, we train BJJ, which is a ground fighting grappling martial art. Takedowns make up just a portion of Jiu-Jitsu.  The trouble is that we think we can master takedowns in BJJ similarly to all other moves. this is where we’re painfully (literally) wrong.

Injury From Takedowns In BJJTakedowns are so complex that they are the main subject of other grappling martial arts. So much so, in fact, that there are different arts for different types of takedowns. Judo and wrestling are great examples. Both have the task fo getting someone to the ground, albeit in very different manners. This means takedowns have a huge learning curve which BJJ people tend to ignore. The outcome is a highly predictable one – injuries.

Speaking of injuries during takedown training, you can pretty much get them all. Two of my more serious injuries come from underestimating takedowns. I have a torn ACL in my shoulder and I had a cracked tibia that required a cast. Compared to others, I got off lightly. Torn ligaments, broken joints, cracked ribs are all a part of takedown training. And they’re not even the worst. neck injuries are also very often the result of flawed takedown attempts.

However, it is not that takedowns in BJJ are not safe. It is how we approach them that makes them dangerous.

Safe Takedown Techniques

So, how do we find a way to train takedowns safely? One obvious solution is toe train like wrestlers and Judokas do. But then, we’d have to train only takedowns. Not really a viable option, is it?

Something that actually does work is choosing the takedowns you actually do train carefully. Namely, high-percentage takedowns do not have to be the highest risk ones. Quite the contrary. Let’s use wrestling as an example here. Suplexes are cool and everything but they’re more dangerous than they are effective. The absolute highest percentage moves are upper body manipulations! Yes, that’s right, no shots. Duck unders, Russian ties and armdrags are by far the most effective wrestling techniques! Not only that but they’re perfect for BJJ, where headlocks, guillotines, and back control are actually desired destinations.

Not forgetting about Judo, they also have a safer version of takedown options. While Uchi Matas and other crazy throws you see at the Olympics are beyond cool, they also require close to a lifetime to perfect. Instead, extremely basic footsweeps are the much higher-percentage takedowns in BJJ. Moreover, going underneath an opponent is also perfect for BJJ. Stuff like Tomoe Nage or Sumi Gaeshi are safe, eventually, get you into the mount, and in the worst case scenario, will force you to pull guard instead. Much better than busting your knee with some crazy throw attempt.

Simple Judo Takedowns For BJJ Matt D'Aquino DVD Instructional Full ReviewMatt D’Aquino knows all about which takedowns are best for BJJ. The Judo and BJJ black belt have a DVD instructional dubbed “Simple Judo Takedowns For Jiu-Jitsu”. It is one of the best resources on the subject of safely training effective takedowns in Jiu-Jitsu.

Takedown Training Rules

All of that aside, training takedowns in BJJ does not have to exclude the use of certain techniques. Of course, there’s a reason why moves like suplexes and scissor takedowns (Kani Basami) are forbidden. But Uchi Matas, power doubles, etc are not, and you can still train them, You just need to establish some training ground rules.

Rule number one is to always take into account prior injuries. There’s not really much sense in training power doubles with a D1 wrestler partner if you have bad knees right? Nor should you look forward to drilling hip throws with messed up shoulders. Bad hips, neck trouble, elbow injuries all impact how you can move. Make sure you choose the takedowns that allow you to spare your affected body parts.

Takedowns In BJJ: The Secret To Avoiding InjuriesRule number two is intensity. Training takedowns in BJJ usually very chaotic and scramble-like. As such it tends to suck people into reckless training and a bunch of subsequent injuries. Make sure you adjust the intensity of your training to the level of your takedown knowledge. even more importantly, choose the right level training partner as well.

Rule number three is to never stop drilling takedowns. You don’t have to train them like a Judoka or wrestler, but keep drilling those that you like often as possible. That means at the very least once a week, preferably more.

Finally, some live rolling rules. To begin with, the above three need to apply before you even get into live rolling with takedowns. Next, make sure you make it clear that there should be no “freestyling”. Both you and your partner should stick to clean moves, you’ve both done before.

Wrapping Up

Training takedowns is most definitely quite risky, mostly due to bad training habits. Improving the way you train takedowns in BJJ, along with choosing the right moves for your body is going to make a world of difference. You’ll not only get better at takedowns, but you’ll even master some of the riskier ones without risking any limbs. Make sure you are smart about your takedown training and it won’t be any more dangerous than training heel hooks.

Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Review – A Timeless Classic

Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Review

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is most likely the one martial art that relies on the use of rashguards more than any other. You don’t really see many Judokas or Sambo fighters in the latest colorful rashguard and spats combo, do you? Wrestlers too are very much content to grapple in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. However, when it comes to training Jiu-Jitsu a rashguard is not just for show. Gi or No-Gi, wearing a rashguard is, well, a must. Understandably, such a demand has created a huge supply, with lots of options. This, in turn, brings about the issue of quality. In order to help you get a rashguard that’s fit for grappling, today we take a look at an Under Armour BJJ Rashguard.

Let’s face it, we’re all suckers for an Under Armour BJJ rashguard. Ever since MMA fighters made them popular during feature pre-fight videos, Under Armour has been one of those brands that are considered classics. After all, they’ve actually been in the rashguard business for decades now. That said, modern “rashguard fashion” tends to promote more colorful rashguards featuring all kinds of sublimated art. Under Armour tends to stick to a simple, yet powerful design. Still, what the Under Armour rashguards “sacrifice” in terms of artistic look, they more than makeup for in performance and quality. If you ask me, I’d opt for an Under Armour over any other brand every time!

Rashguards And Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The trend of wearing rashguards during grappling is a fairly new one. That said, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a fairly new martial art as well. Still, the original method of training was, and still overwhelmingly is, with the BJJ Gi. In Brazil, people used to train with Gis, or simply in their Gi pants when the weather got really hot. Then, somehow, rashguards weaseled their way in amongst grapplers. As far as I am concerned, it is all a result of that ever-present surfing-BJJ relationship.

Today, apart from trying (and often failing) to look cool, we use rashguards for a myriad of practical reasons. One such reason is protection. When you hear a rashguard in No-Gi, you obviously get protection from both contacts with others and contact the ground. Moreover, when you have a Gi on, you extend that protection to the Gi, by reducing the amount of moisture it is exposed to. Then, there is the most obvious thing – rash prevention. Given how BJJ training takes place, this one is arguably the most important one.

There are a bunch of other reasons for wearing a rashguard when you grapple. However, wearing an Under Armour BJJ rashguard does not only provide all of the benefits, but it is also a different class to most other rashguards. particularly if you are a fan of low-key high-performance pieces.

Under Armour BJJ Rashguard

Under Armour is without a doubt the leading brand when it comes to rashguards. To be fair, they do have a very wide range of sports leisurewear and training apparel. However, they’re most famous for their running shoes and their rashguards. A lot of that is down to MMA, with early stars of the sport like GSP promoting the brand. Before that, it was all surfers and divers that endorsed Under Armour rashguards. Now, BJJ is taking over that particular mantle.

Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Complete ReviewThe Under Armour BJJ rashguard options are plenty. They come in all shapes and sizes. For BJJ, it is always good to have so many choices. With Under Armour, you get virtually everything you need. They have short, long-sleeved, and even sleeveless options. Furthermore, they have a huge amount of sizes and a bunch of colors. Plus, they offer men’s and women’s models as well. The area even kids’ sizes and models included. Still, even amongst all of their rashguards, certain models for the needs of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu much more than others.

To be frank, there’s one in particular that I’m really biased for. Having worn both long as short sleeve variations of it, I can really attest to its properties first hand. For someone looking to get a high-quality, long-lasting rashguard for Jiu-Jitsu training, options do not get better than the Under Armor Heat Gear series rashguards.

The Under Armor Heat Gear Rashguard

The Under Armour Heat Gear series is Under Armour’s most prominent compression gear series. It is one of the most iconic rashguard designs of all time, fit for just about any physical activity, from diving to fighting. In all fairness, the Heat Gear is not a specific Under Armour BJJ Rashguard. however, if there’s any other rashguard that’s tailor-made for grapplers, I haven’t heard about it And I don’t mean they hype, but rather the feedback of people that have actually worn it.

From a BJJ rashguard, we have several major expectations. First of all, we need several qualities that are down to the material. Those are rash prevention, protection from germs, thermal effects as well as moisture management. Next up is how the rashguard feels and fits. In BJJ we need unrestricted movement while also getting the most out of the rashguard’s other properties. This makes it quite challenging for most brands to nail the perfect BJJ rashguard.

Of course, we need to also take a look into account. While anything might fly under a Gi, in No-Gi style is also important. This Under Armour BJJ rashguard luckily delivers on both style and performance. Speaking of performance, the rashguard has to be able to withstand grinding, stretching, and everything else that comes associated with Jiu-Jitsu. Moreover, it needs to be easy to wash, quick-drying, and able to go through all of the above dailies. This makes longevity a really important property. Finally, there’s the cost of it all. There’s no point in wearing a rashguard that looks cool, doesn’t perform, and costs more than your Gi, like certain options out there.

The material of the Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ rashguard is extremely thin. Despite seeming like it would give way, it is extremely durable. The fact that it is so thought highly amplifies the rashguard’s performance qualities. But more on that later.

Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Review Short SleevesThe material this rashguard is made of is the original copyright Under Armour blend. It is known as HeatGear fabric, hence the series name. The rashguard actually has two parts to it – a “body” and mesh panels. The material of the “body” is a mixture of  90% Polyester and 10% Elastane. Furthermore, the mesh panels are made of the same combinations, but this time featuring 88% polyester and 22 % elastane. For BJJ, this is another key characteristic.

The Under Armour Heat Gear rashguard, long or short-sleeved is one of the most comfortable rashguards I’ve ever had. The fact that it is so thin makes it perfect, as it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. Moreover, it has a very high flexibility rate, able to stretch in four directions. This means the movement is completely unrestricted, both when you’re wearing it for No-Gi, or as a base layer under the Gi.

Another important aspect of the feel department is thermoregulation. Namely, the heat Gear claims to have the ability to cool you off while you train, thanks to the way it spreads out moisture. Well, this claim is true and you’ll certainly never feel hot or suffocating in this rashguard.

In terms of fi, this Unde Armour BJJ rashguard is a tight-fitting one. Even amongst rashguards, the Heat Gear feels a bit tight. This is, of course, a positive for Jiu-Jitsu. It is not tight in the sense that it compresses too hard or prevents movement, but rather in completely conforming to your body. This means it has a very comfortable fit. It also has a reinforced bottom seam, meaning it will never come up as you train. Finally, even though it fits tight, it is really easy to take off, even after working out for hours.

Available sizes include everything ranging from Xs to 5 XL.

Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Review Size Chart

In terms of look, the Heat Gear screams simplicity and minimalism. First of all, it comes in a bunch of colors, more than two dozen of them. It is always a plain colored rashguard, with only the reinforced seems as a decoration in addition to a small Under Armour logo upfront. The seems are either black or grey. The rashguard comes in a long-sleeved, short-sleeved, and sleeveless version. For BJJ I recommend the long, and if you prefer it, the short-sleeved ones.

This is a key component of any rashguard. What can you expect from the Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard? Well, first of all, it’ll last. And by that, I mean years. It doesn’t matter if you use it for Gi, No-Gi, or both, this rashguard is one tough piece of gear. Moreover, it provides flawless protection against anything. It is not only germ-resistant against both bacteria and fungi but is also not odor resistant which is often a problem with rashguards. When you roll with multiple people during class, this becomes really important.

Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard Review Long SleevesIn addition to protection and moisture management, the rashguard also provides compression. This means that it helps blood flow, and consequently performance. Furthermore, training in a compression shirt also boosts the muscle’s abilities to recover. Finally, the combination of materials ensures that this rashguard can stretch in pretty much any direction you need it to. Not only that but stretching means it is completely resistant to tears.

Oh, and not that it matters much to grapplers, but this rashguard provides 30+ UV protection.

Yeah, this one can really become a hassle. Do you know all those sublimated art rashguards? Well, they’re usually not washing machine friendly, given all the artwork. Washing them on hand, after each training session is not something you want. Particularly not if you train every day. The Heat Gear, on the other hand, is completely hassle-free. The only thing you need to watch out for with it is that you wash it according to the general color mixing rules. Oh, and it dries fast. And I mean, really really fast!

This is a portion of reviews that people often tend to look at first. In this case, it won’t make a difference even if you look at it first. The Heat Gear Under Armour BJJ Rashguard has an unbelievable price. For the most part, people opt for them precisely because of this and end up positively surprised with the quality they get. let me put it simply – you can get enough pairs of rashguards to cover all your weekly sessions and you still won’t reach the price of one of those modern rashguards that pop up all over the place. Think about that next time you opt to get yourself a new BJJ rashguard.

Conclusion

Suffice to say, Heat Gear is my favorite Under Armour BJJ rashguard. And, coming from someone with quite the BJJ rashguard collection, that is something. Granted, it will “disappoint” you if you’re looking for wacky animals or Yakuza art. But If you’re looking for a reliable BJJ rashguard that’ll last, is easy to take care of, and performs admirably, then go get yourself a Heat Gear Under Armour rashguard. Or two.

Want To Tap Out Less In BJJ? Here Is How

How to Reduce The times you tap Out during grappling training

Tapping out is the one par of BJJ nobody likes to do (apart from warming up). In all honesty, tapping out is there to protect us and there’s no reason to go hating ourselves after we tap. In fact, tapping out is one of the best ways of learning in Jiu-JItsu. However, you can’t just keep tapping out and hope to master the art. At some point, you’ll have to really focus on submission defense, and that includes resisting the tap in a smart way. As you progress in BJJ you’ll figure out that you don’t have to tap out nearly as often as you think.

Before we get into tapping out in BJJ and when you should and shouldn’t let us make something clear. There are two ways of refusing to tap – the smart and the dumb way. The dumb way is holding on because of ego, of course. Best case scenario you’ll go to sleep, worst case you’ll get a limb broken. That said, while the tap out is absolutely the best possible defense in BJJ, it is also avoidable in many situations. All it takes is some common sense, a bit of submission defense knowledge and the ability to stay calm. Today, we’ll look into the secrets behind the superb submission defense of so many high-level BJJ black belts.

When Not To Tap Out

One of the most important lessons in Jiu-Jitsu is to learn to tap out. The moment you get into BJJ, you’re most likely unwilling to tap. However, you’ll soon learn that getting tapped out is as inevitable as adopting “Oss” into your daily vocabulary. As you progress, you’ll also learn that tapping out is absolutely necessary in order to learn BJJ. Here’s a spoiler – you’ll never learn to not hate the tap, though. As much as you might respect it, you’ll never love it. As should be the case.

How to tap out less when training BJJWell, what if I told you that you actually don’t need to tap as often as you think? Yeah, right, it sounds unbelievable, I know, that said, I have to make something clear. This advice is intended for people at purple belt level and above. As a blue belt, you might find something interesting here, but you still need to further perfect the art of tapping out.

The reason we have the tap is to give up when things get too close to what a certain submission is all about. However, it is common practice for people to tap way to early. Yeah, even deep submissions have a way out, as long as you know what you’re doing and not just thrashing around. Tapping out robs both you and your partner from the ability to really learn the move. For you, it is learning defense, and for them, how to improve the submission itself.

Submission Defense

Defending submission is some of the nastiest business in Brazilian Jiu-JItsu, It doesn’t take much for a submission defense or counter to go wrong. It takes two to make a mess out of things, but unless you’re willing to tap you’re definitely the one to blame. Still, if you can intelligently and efficiently defend yourself, even the tightest submission won’t merit a tap. All it takes is to follow some ground rules and, most importantly, know when you’re past the point of no return.

Tom De Blass Submission EscapesOne of the slickest grapplers of today, Tom DeBlass has not been caught in a submission for years. This is down to both his technical skills and his strategy when it comes to defending submissions. His “Submission Escapes” DVD set is the best instructional to drastically reduce you’re tapping out rate. Check it out for yourself

Proactive vs. Reactive

When is it easier to defend an armbar, once you’re caught deep or while your opponent is setting it up? If your answer is the latter, you’re ready for the tips and tricks of this article. If not, perhaps you still need to tap out a few more times.

Defending submissions needs to happen proactively rather than reactively, That means that once you’re deep, you either have one option left, or you’re done. That the time to tap. Other than that, as long as you’re technical you can get out. The rule of thumb here is the earlier you start escaping, the better. To make sure you’re not forced to tap, you need to think about changing the angles while an opponent is attempting to solidify a submission position. This is going to require some trial and error (lots of error) on your part. However, once you’re comfortable with it, you’ll hardly tap to anything.

Know Thy Enemy

Do you want to know what the best way of tapping out less is, regardless of your level of experience? You need to train more. Still, it is not a defense that you need to focus on, but rather attacks. Let’s say you’re having trouble with a particular submission. The answer to this is to learn everything you can about the submission itself.

The more you understand a move, the more you’ll be able to counter it. Training submissions means you know both how to hold and finish them, as well as the finer points of entering. As you can see, we’re coming back to the importance of defending submissions earlier rather than later. That, in turn, means that you know what’s happening as an opponent tries to tap you with a specific move. It also means you’ll become much better at defending each stage of submission, and conversely, tap less often.

Walking The Line

For those that are really trying to avoid the tap, this is the last resort option. In fact, it is all about last-ditch defenses that leave absolutely no place for any doubt. You’ll either escape or inevitably have to tap out. Since we’re focusing on avoiding the tap, you need to know two things about last ditch escapes in BJJ.

Tap Out LessThe first thing is technique. You can’t just try to think and use principles to get out of a late-stage submission. You either know a specific escape that’ll save you by the skin fo your teeth, or you tap. So, you need to have sufficient specific technical knowledge first. The second thing, which you can only learn by experience and repetition is timing. Last resort escapes work when the technique is on point and the timing is perfect. the trouble is that the window here is extremely small and you need to be as precise as possible. If you do get this down, though, you’ll be virtually unstoppable.

Get in Shape

On a different note, if you really want to stop tapping out, then do your best to get in shape. For beginners, this has a direct carryover, as the better your cardio is, the less likely your art to do a “cardio tap”. Tapping out due to exhaustion is the worst possible tap that you can do in BJJ.

For those that are more advanced, the same rule applies, albeit a bit differently. Namely, being tired can make defending much harder. Moreover, being exhausted affects your mind as well, so out goes every escape and defense strategy we covered so far. The bigger gas tank you have, the longer you’ll be able to play your game and apply any and all of the above principles to avoid tapping out.

Final Words

If your sole goal in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to never tap out, you’re in the wrong sport. Not this, nor any other article on the subject is going to do you any good. If you want to improve submission defense, though, then focusing on only tapping when it comes to that is a good strategy. Be mindful though, that there’s a very fine line between being stubborn and being smart. The more you walk it, the more likely you are to get hurt. So, learn submissions, focus on defending early, get in shape, and make sure you still tap on occasion. It will come in handy, believe me.

Best MMA Wrist Braces 2021 Guide With Reviews

The Ultimate Best MMA Wirst Braces 2019 guide with In-Depth Reviews Of Each

Regardless of the choice of sports, there’s one certain thing – injuries inevitably do happen. When it comes to combat sports, particularly live sparring ones like BJJ or MMA, the rate of injuries is even higher. Thankfully, most injuries common to mixed martial arts training are nothing major or debilitating. They are however a real nuisance that can ultimately lead to more serious issues. That is exactly the reason why so much of the “basic” MMA training gear is protective. In certain cases, though, you need either specialized protective gear or special support gear to be able to nurse an injury faster. Moreover, training with an injury, as bad as that idea is, is impossible without reliable support gear, like for example, the best MMA wrist braces.

Out of the injuries that plague MMA fighters regularly, there’s one that is probably more common than anything else. In fact, it is not so much a specific injury as it is an area of the body that gets injured. The area I’m talking about is the wrists. injuries to the wrists among MMA athletes are virtually inescapable. While the level of seriousness varies, most of them are nothing to really worry about. However, they can very easily turn into bigger issues and even require surgical help which may derail a scheduled fight. Keeping your wrists healthy is not hard, but keeping them injury-free when you already have a tweak can be challenging, this is where the best MMA wrist braces come in.

Training With Wrist Injuries In MMA

First and foremost, it is never a good idea to train with an injury. That said, plenty (if not all) of MMA fighters or grapplers are too stubborn to accept this. Professional MMA fighters, on the other hand, do not have the luxury of taking time off whenever something hurts. That either means training in pain or figuring a way around it.

The reason the wrist is among the most often injured body parts in MMA is the rate of its use. When you come to think of it, every art that’s an integral part of MMA has a high occurrence of wrist injuries. With boxing and Muay Thai, the reasons are clear – it can be sparring, pad work, bag work, or any of a million other things. In wrestling, it is down to awkward landings and clumsy grips to provide ample injuries to the wrists. And finally, grappling has more ways than any of the above in which the wrist can get damaged, often seriously. Now put them all together, and you have the perfect recipe for wrist destruction. And that is before you even throw a punch inside the cage.

One thing that we all accept and wear, even during light bag work, is MMA hand wraps. They provide support for our wrists, as well as extra padding for the knuckles. While we are on the subject of hand wraps, let’s make something clear – they are irreplaceable and you need to wear them every time you train. However, sometimes your wrists need even more support than hand wraps can offer. This is when you need to turn towards specialized MMA wrist braces. And we have the absolute best MMA wrist braces 2021 guide for you below:

Best MMA Wrist Braces of 2021

If there’s one joint in the body that’s really complicated, it is the wrist. Granted, it is not nearly as complex as the ankle, but it is definitely a runner-up! That said, the range of motion of the wrists, and the different forces that impact them translate to a whole host of potential injuries. Throw into that MMA training, where the wrists take impact, get twisted, bent, and pushed to their limits daily, and you can see how important the best MMA wrist braces are for combat athletes.

One major thing with the best MMA wrist braces is that you can use them to actively train MMA. In that sense, all but one of the choices below fit perfectly underneath MMA gloves, and they all fit into sparring gloves with ease. Of course, as always, we made sure we included nothing but the highest quality, best-priced products available. Types Of MMA Wrist Braces

As previously mentioned, wrist braces can vary a lot. In fact, we can even count hand wraps among them, as they play pretty much the same role. When it comes to the heavier duty types of braces though, we need to take into account several different types. |it is not just for the sake of variety. Different types of wrist races offer different support for different types of injuries. After all, the wrist joint is a highly complex one and there’s no one brace to solve all your wrist injury issues.

The main thing to consider with wrist braces is if they’re built for MMA. All of the best MMA wrist braces above fit the needs of combat athletes perfectly. When it comes to different types of braces, the main thing to consider is if you can use them to train striking. Braces that are too big and too restrictive are definitely the wrong option to pick. Furthermore, braces that are too thick or restrict the range of motion are also tough to train with.

The main types of wrist braces you can use in MMA are divided according to size. By size, I do not mean the specific size of each brace, but rather how big a part of your hand they cover. In that sense, MMA wrist braces can cover the wrist only, or extend upwards and even encompass the fingers. They all have different support to offer, but they give the athlete every opportunity to spar and train. That means that each of the braces featured in our best MMA wrist braces 2021 guide can provide you with a different aspect of support and protection. Everything you need is just a click away!

Closing Thoughts

Wrist injuries have the ability to completely destroy someone’s MMA or even grappling career. The fact that people often take them for granted e=fruther increases the dangers of serious injuries and subsequent complications. Wrist Braces are not commonly seen as an integral part of MMA gear, due to the use of hand wraps. However, if your wrists are all banged up, using one of the best MMA wrist Braces of 2021, in addition to hand wraps as a great way of ensuring you can keep training and recover all at the same time!

Best MMA Apparel 2021 Guide And Reviews

The Best MMA Apparel 2019 Guide And Reviews

There are generally three types of people that wear MMA apparel daily. One is the Tapout shirt-wearing guys, those that watch the UFC, think they’re experts but do no training of any kind whatsoever. The second is professional MMA fighters, regardless of which organization they’re fighting for. They usually have sponsorship deals that require them to wear certain brands at all times. The final type is the MMA fighter or athlete that doesn’t have sponsorship but enjoys the way of life and likes to display their passion. For this type of people, we have a great guide that’ll point you to the very best MMA apparel of 2021!

I fancy myself in this third type of people, even though I prefer grappling to MMA for most of the time. Still, I do wear MMA apparel from time to time. So, I know the struggle of having to choose a great-looking piece of leisurewear that not everyone has. Furthermore, I know how hard it can be to pinpoint good quality MMA wear without having to give your monthly paycheck to get it. There’s also the question of style, which is where we’re all different. Still, some items are just simply brilliant, regardless of your fashion preferences. That said we included nothing but the very best MMA apparel in our guide here. that means great-priced best-selling stuff that’ll turn heads wherever you go!

MMA Leisurewear

So, speaking of MMA leisurewear, what exactly is it? Well, MMA apparel can be anything you wear that has a connection to MMA. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should roam the streets in flight shorts and with MAM gloves on. On the contrary. Leisurewear MMA apparel is designed to be worn during the day, and not in the gym for training. That doesn’t mean you can’t train with an MMA T-shirt on, but why ruin a perfectly great shirt?

When we talk about the best MMA apparel, we do mean a lot of different pieces of clothing. Of course, the ubiquitous T-shirts feature heavily, but not just in one variation. We did include some really unique options in the T-shirt department in our best MMA apparel 2021 guide, as you’ll see later on. furthermore, we also thought about the ladies, so it’s not just boys’ T-shirts. Cool ladies’ options in the tank top department also find their way in our guide.

With the goal of as much variety as possible, and always taking comfort into account we also included some hoodies and pants. We opted for full-length zipper hoodies here, and a pair of really, really comfortable sweat pants. To cap it all off (pun intended) we have a few hats on offer as well, both featuring vastly different designs. All in all, we have MMA leisurewear that’ll be enough to have you ready for a whole week of wardrobe changes.

Best MMA Apparel in 2021

So, how do we put together a comprehensive best MMA apparel guide and still manage to include something for everyone? With gear, this is not hard, as everyone needs the same MMA gear for training. When it comes to MMA apparel, though, things get a bit more complicated. Personal styles nowadays are so different we couldn’t possibly use style as a selection criterion. We did use variety, though, along with top pricing and high quality.

For most people, MMA apparel is a way to show the world their love for the toughest sport in existence. Everything we wear, from hats to T-shirts and pants, can reflect how much we enjoy doing MMA. In that sense, wearing MMA apparel of any kind can actually become a style. This is in fact, what happens to most people that decide to pursue careers in the cage or octagon. And, before sponsors come along, a great way to start repping MMA is by way of the best possible MMA apparel. Time to see what’s on top of the MMA fashion world in 2021!

Quality Or Style?

The one major thing we’re facing whenever we look at leisurewear is the issue of quality. marketing is so good nowadays that hitting that great quality T-shirt or tank top can be a real challenge. Very often it is the style of the T-shirt that determines whether we get and wear it or not. However, there’s nothing worse than getting a new piece of MMA apparel and having it last for only a couple of weeks.

The best MMA apparel you wear every day should be just as good as the MMA gear you use in training. With that in mind, we did extensive research before putting together the best MMA apparel 2021 guide. While there’s no way of making sure we include something for everyone style-wise, we most certainly can choose quality. Each piece of leisurewear in the guide above is of the utmost possible quality. At the same time, getting one (or more) won’t burn a hole in your pocket!

Best MMA Ankle Support 2021 Guide And Reviews

The Best MMA Ankle Support 2019 Guide and Reviews

For a species intended to walk straight on only two legs, our ankles are really not that good at doing their job. Okay, perhaps they’ll do the trick if you only walk from your car to work. However, if you like to do anything that puts a strain on your ankles, you’ll need to give them some support. This is particularly true when it comes to MMA. During MMA training you use your ankles to bear weight in many awkward angles, you attack them when grappling, you strike and block strikes with them. In short, you do all sorts of things they’re not originally built for. This is why you need the best MMA Ankle Support you can get if you’re to have a long and fruitful MMA career.

About five years back, I was grappling with a friend who just began training BJJ. I was not that good at it myself and the inevitable happened. I decided to go for an inverted triangle of a sort. My training partner decided he was going to have none of it and defended by doing some crazy acrobatics. The result was a loud tearing noise and not long after, burning pain in the ankle that was inside the triangle. That’s how I lost my affection for triangles, along with my ankle ligaments. Unfortunately, this is a story that’s far too familiar to many MMA athletes. Luckily, there’s a quick fix, other than surgery. The best MMA ankle support sleeves and braces are a great way to provide your ankles with all the help they need to get you through MMA training and fighting. And we have the ultimate 2021 guide.

Solving MMA-Related Ankle Trouble

Did you know that the ankle is the most complicated joint in our bodies? It may not look like it but the ankle has more moving parts than any other structure in the human body. Moreover, plenty of these structures are small, whether they’re ligaments tendons, bones, or cartilage. That, along with the mobility of the ankle makes them very susceptible to traumatic injuries. Throw in the awkwardness and physical demands of MMA training and you’ve got yourself genuine ankle trouble.

There are dozens of ways in which you can injure your ankle. As with all injuries, they range from mild to devastating. However, MMA fighters do not understand the mild ones have the potential of becoming really big ones if you keep training with them. Just look at soccer players. Once they end up with an ankle injury, it gets really hard to shake it off. In MMA, the ankles get in a much weirder position than soccer, not to mention all the grappling, striking, and takedowns that are also going on. And it just so happens, there’s an answer to it all – prevention. Your ankles, along with your knees, are the two most likely body parts to get injured during MMA training or fighting. So, the smart thing would be to give them support.

When it comes to the best MMA ankle support, there are a few different ways of achieving it. The basic rule of thumb is that the worse your injury is, the more heavy-duty your support gear needs to be. That means that while some people can get away with sleeves, others need heavy-duty braces. The good news is that ankles do heal up, even without surgery. If you do not want to destroy them, you’ll need to get some ankle support.

Best MMA Ankle Support in 2021

Below, you’ll find the selection of the absolute best MMA ankle support braces you can get in 2021! First and foremost, all of them play a slightly different role, so that you can find one that suits your exact needs. With that in mind, we made sure nothing but the very best deals feature in our 2021 guide.

As far as uses go, you can be as versatile as you want with ankle support braces. The softer ones are great for every aspect of MMA, from running to live sparring. Others that are4 thicker or more specialized might prove a bit difficult to wear during grappling, but are perfect for all other MMA-related activities. Finally, the heavy-duty ankle braces are there to keep you from falling apart. You probably shouldn’t be training at all if you need one of those. however, if you’re stubborn as every MMA fighter I know then you can do most things with it on, apart from live sparring. The construction of these types of ankle supports means you can injure your partner or further hurt your ankle or instep.

How To Choose The Best MMA Ankle Support

Now that we’re clear on what the best MMA ankle support options are, a few words on how you can be sure whatever you’re looking at fits this description. In the extremely unlikely chance that you don’t find what you’re looking for here, we’ll share all the important selection criteria that make all the difference. Not that you’ll need it, given the options above.

The most important thing you need to focus on is why you’re getting an ankle support brace in the first place. If it is preventative, or nursing a small injury, you’ll do great with most of the braces in our guide. If you have a more serious injury or are recovering from one, the heavier-duty options are much better suited for you.

Next up, it is all about how your ankle support fits. There’s no place for looseness when it comes to ankle support. Remember that you always need to make sure you see a size chart. There’s no generic size that fits all, so take your own measurements. If your ankle support is too loose it’s no better than wearing a sock.

In terms of material, you’ll either run into Neoprene or cotton fiber ankle supports. Well, at least as far as our best MMA ankle supports guide is concerned. Both these materials guarantee comfort, provide precise support, and make cleaning and drying your ankle support a breeze.

The closure system, which also provides adjustability is also important. Usually, the best MAM ankle support braces come in either a sleeve, lace-up, or strap version. The sleeve type is easy to pull over and provides great support and comfort. The others might prove harder to deal with in MMA, as the straps and/or laces take time to configure.

Summary

If you haven’t got an ankle injury of some sort up to this point, you’re one of the lucky ones. However, for all of us that are less fortunate, the MMA ankle support braces are the difference between a successful MMA career and early retirement. This 2021 guide has nothing but proven options for you. they are durable, ensure top-grade support, and won’t cost you a fortune. What have you got to lose?

For the ladies, it is pretty much the norm to see them training in spats. Nowadays, it seems that men are also warming up to this. It probably has to do with thermal regulation properties, as they’re really important for me. Cold winters and warm summer mean training is anything but easy, at least when I’m without MMA spats. And these are certainly some of the best MMA spats out there!

You can’t beat the design of the Roar MMA spats, even though there might not be as many different options as with other spats in our 2021 guide. However, they offer some of the slickest designs, all of them MMA specific. The quality of the graphics is ultra-high, with no chance of it fading. 16 different designs also offer plain color variations for those looking for simpler options. Sizes range between small and extra-large. The material is a patented Roar blend, offering extreme 4-way elasticity and optimal compression. The fabric allows for sweat evaporation which helps with thermal regulation. The skin stays dry and the muscles remain warm allowing you for extended periods of high-level performance. Available in both male and female variations.

Available in sizes between extra small and extra-large.

The Best Vs. The Rest

What makes a pair of spats the best MMA spats of 2021 is a combination of several things. You can rank them according to importance any way you want. but you’ll end up with the same ones regardless. These crucial properties of MMA compression pants are what sets them apart from all the wanna-be imitations out there.

The first and, arguably, the most important thing is fit. There’s no point in wearing spats if they’re going to baggy, is there? That said, how a pair of spats fit you is definitely key. In that regard, spats need to stay extremely close to your skin. There is generic sizing, but you should always consult size charts as well. lengthwise they should be above your ankles. There’s also the point of spats being too tight and actually stopping circulation instead of aiding it.

Next up, seams. If your seams can’t withstand the exertion of MMA sparring, particularly grappling the spats are certainly not one of the best! Flatlock stitching is the best for two reasons – it is strong and it does not irritate the skin. If you’re really into extra durable stitching, the overlock seams area also great, but they’re bulkier and might cause irritation.

Ventilation is also a given when you have a pair of the best MMA spats for 2021. If you feel like you’re in an oven while you’re training, you need to upgrade your spats. Breathability and moisture-wicking, as well as thermal regulation, all depend on ventilation. The key role here is the choice of material. Microscopic holes in the fabric allow for air to flow, helping you stay cool or warm and prevent the build-up of microbes.

Final Thoughts

Whether you want to be fashionable or not, you need MMA spats for optimal performance. If you get any of the best MMA spats of 2021 you get not just a top performance boost but also as many fashion options as you can think of. Every pair of spats above has been tried and tested by MMA fighters and grapples and is guaranteed to provide you with an invaluable piece of MMA training apparel.

Best Cheap MMA Gear 2021 Guide And Reviews

The Best Cheap MMA Gear 2019 Guide Offers Complete Budget MMA Gear Reviews

Combat sports training is unlike any other sport. Competing in mixed martial arts is pretty much an attempt to control the chaos. Well, training MMA has controlled chaos, but it is still chaos. Whenever there’s contact, there’s the potential for injuries and things going wrong. All the gear we wear during both fighting and training is not optional for a great reason – it reduces the effects of the chaos significantly. However, gearing up to head to toes for MMA sparring is not something that comes cheap. Yet, training without it is not an option at all. This is where our Best Cheap MMA Gear 2021 guide comes in.

The math is simple. If you train MMA, you’ll need gear. If you train MMA for fighting, you’ll need even more gear, most of it highly specialized. In essence, this is mostly protective gear, focused on protecting both yourself and your training partner. However, all that gear does come at a price… a literal one. MMA training requires much more than just putting on UFC gloves and going berserk. The catch is that the cheaper MMA gear usually is, the worse protection it offers. In essence, you always know you’ve got quality if the price is high. Still, there’s a loophole here that you can use if you know-how. Budget MMA gear is out there and it provides the same, if not more, quality than regularly priced gear. Our best cheap MMA gear guide will help you find everything you need for a tiny fraction of the price.

The Bare Essentials Of MMA Gear

You would not head out running a marathon without proper running shoes, would you? Well, going into MMA training without the proper gear is just as dumb. That said, there are essential pieces of training gear that you can’t do without, optional pieces of gear, and some that are completely unnecessary. Before we look into the best cheap MMA gear you can get in 2021, let’s first clear up what are the bare essentials for mixed martial arts training.

The first thing people think of is gloves, Both adult and youth gloves, but in reality, you need something even before you think about gloves. Without a pair of good-length, durable hand wraps, your hands are quickly going to become increasingly painful, regardless of the type of gloves you wear. Only after wraps, you can think about gloves. On the subject of MMA gloves, you have two main options – fight gloves and MMA sparring gloves. FIhgt gloves are the real deal, but you can’t really do live striking with them. MMA sparring gloves, on the other hand, allow you to train both grappling and sparring with ease. Having both is the ideal combination.

On the subject of protective MMA gear, you can’t go without there are three more items. First up you need an MMA helmet for reasons that are more than obvious. Next up, shin guards are a must, especially if you’ve never done kickboxing before. Finally, a great mouthpiece is not only going to protect your teeth but also your jaw, neck, and even skull.

When it comes to optional MMA gear, fight shorts or a pair of spats (or both) come in really handy) However, you can also do without them if you have to. The same holds true for having your own focus mitts.

Best Cheap MMA Gear in 2021

Buying cheap usually equates to throwing money away. Essentially it is a much worse decision than that option to spend a bit more and actually get something that’s worth it. With low-quality MMA gear, though, the cost might be much bigger. Under the best of circumstances, MMA is a hazard to your health. As the ultimate contact combat sport, this is to be expected. MMA gear goes a long way in helping you prepare for the cage as safely and optimally as possible.

When you take all the marketing and jibberish out of the way, it is actually pretty simple. First, you want to protect yourself. Then, you want to protect your training partner. Finally, you want to have gear that will last and will help you improve your performance. If these are the only criteria you have, you’ll easily find the best possible MMA sparring gear in existence. However, if you factor in price as well, you’ll need something more. You’ll need the best cheap MMA gear 2021 guide we have ready for you.

Low Price, High Quality

In most situations, the combination of low price and high quality is not something we see often. When it comes to MMA gear, the sheer number of brands and different pieces of equipment can overwhelm even seasoned fighters that know what they’re looking for. And, let’s face it, until such time that you get a sponsorship deal, you’ll need to get your own gear.

In terms of quality though, there’s a lot of room for debate. Quality in terms of MMA gear is hugely variable, given the many different pieces you need. To that extent, material, of course, plays a huge role. Different pieces of gear require different materials, but the main properties you’re looking for are durability, comfort, and ease of maintenance. As you can see from our best cheap MMA gear guide, getting top-quality material on a budget is more than possible.

Speaking of comfort, fit come next. In general, MMA gear needs to fit you perfectly, meaning no room for slack. However, you can’t just get ultra-tight gear that impedes your movement. The best MMA gear strikes a perfect balance between the two, regardless if it is a mouthguard or a pair of shin guards.

Easo of maintenance is another huge one. If your gear retains odors and is susceptible to the growth of microbes, that’s a sign of plain cheap gear. However, if you have resistant gear, with built-in ventilation, that’s easy to wash in a washing machine and dries instantly, then you’re looking at quality gear.

Finally, there’s the question of design or rather the quality of the design. Color that peels off and leath3er that cracks are just a couple of reasons why the best cheap MMA gear 2021 guide comes in useful.

In Conclusion

So what does the math of all the items in our best cheap MMA gear 2021 guide comes to? We did it for you, and it comes down to $160 for a piece of everything that we have above. That means that you can get outfitted for professional MMA training and sparring for the price of just one of these items if you buy it regularly. Time to capitalize on this deal land head straight to the gym!
