BJJ Purple Belt: The Annoying “Know-It-All” Student

BJJ Purple Belt: The Annoying "Know-It-All" Student
Sean O'Malley @bjjpenn.com

The belt system in Jiu-Jitsu does not just represent the skill level of people. There are many other meanings behind having a belt, which is exactly why people tend to misunderstand promotions. We’ve already talked about how your demeanor and overall approach also playa key role in your promotion. Another really interesting aspect is the mentality of each belt. If you stay in the sport long enough you’ll notice that certain traits repeat themselves with most people at certain times. One great example is the “blue belt instructor” Another is the BJJ purple belt know-it-all.

To be completely honest from the get-go this is not an article about downgrading purple belts. On the contrary, the BJJ purple belt is the most important time in a grappler’s career. The purple belt period usually lasts the most because it represents the bridge between beginner and advanced. It is not uncommon for some of the top instructors out there, as well as innovators within the art, to be purple belts. However, there’s also a different side to being a purple belt that we’ve all gone through – being an insufferable know-it-all.

The BJJ purple Belt

As much as the blue belt is a time for weeding out the serious grapplers, the purple belt is a time where the steel gets hardened. Getting the BJJ purple belt means you’re most likely in it for the long run. Purple belts are usually highly individuals who really embrace BJJ and commit to it. For me, it was the best period of BJJ, hands down. However, it was also a period that revealed a lot about me as a grappler, and not just a period of learning new stuff.

The BJJ Purple Belt "Know-It-All"Most often you’ll see the purple belt period marked as the one when grapplers discover their styles. At blue belt, you first learn to survive and by doing so discover the power of the guards in Jiu-Jitsu. However, it is a purple belt that connections start to form. This is when everything that you’ve trained for starts to connect. You experiment a lot with different positions, most of which are brand new. This is imperative in finding out what works for you. However, it also gives birth to a very interesting phenomenon.

From my humble experience so far, the worst student you can find a BJJ academy tends to be the BJJ purple belt. This by no means true for everyone out there, but bear with me and you’ll most likely recognize yourself. How often do you see purple belts coming in late, and trying to slack off while they’re waiting for the open mat to try all their new stuff out? What about every time that they claim to know exactly what you’re talking about and then go about and do it their own (mostly wrong) way again? The BJJ purple belt is by far the worst possible student. Luckily, we all grow out of that phase.

The Know-It-All Syndrome

By the time you reach the purple belt level, you already have a lot of hours under your belt. In fact, you have just enough to exhibit a well-known phenomenon. It happens to everyone, from drivers to soldiers and athletes. You reach a point where you’re skilled enough to be good at what you’re doing, but you’re still a long way from being great. The thing is, being good gives you so much confidence that you end up making silly mistakes. In other words, you’re experienced enough to think you can’t make mistakes, but in truth, you’re a long way form bein as good as you think.

As a BJJ purple belt, I was all about the lastest in the submissions department. Moreover, I claimed that each one of those was going to work against anyone, given how unorthodox they were. It took a lot of mistakes and getting humbled (a lot) to actually realize that it is not all about the latest crazy move. Yeah, you get a few people along the way but they’ll soon wise up. Listening to what instructors teach you is the only proven way of actually progressing successfully. That doesn’t mean stop experimenting and having fun, it just means you need to also listen. And somehow, this seems to be the hardest part for a purple belt.

At this level, you’re so confident in your skills that you think you know everything there is. You’re aware you have a long way to got o black belt which is why you focus ion certain areas of the sport. However, the mistake is thinking you’re the utmost expert in those fields. Well, you’re not. As innovative as your stuff might be, black belts are going to shut it down without even breaking a sweat.

Growing Out Of It

BJJ Purple Belt: The Annoying "Know-It-All"The purple belt know-it-all is just another of the phenomena we encounter on our way to black belt. However, it is one that can annoy teachers and fellow students alike. Instructors are usually wise to it and let people grow out of it. Just like with blue belt spazzers, for example. However, that doesn’t mean the BJJ purple belt know-it-all make life easier.

To get out of this, make sure you always remember to stay humble. You can have immense knowledge in certain areas but you’re still a purple belt. And, if you want to be a solid brown and black belt one day, you need to learn how to listen. Staying humble doesn’t just mean tapping to higher belts. It means listening to what they have to teach. BJJ is all about experience and even if they don’t know the attest spinning flying move, they’ll certainly have things to teach you about it.

Roberto Jimenez DVD Review
Techniques List

Just last year, a purple belt proved how deadly they can be, by conquering a double world title with all wins by submission. Now, you can use the same tactics as Roberto Jimenez thanks to his detailed instructional. “Take The Back Every Match” is a 4 part BJJ DVD that is the perfect recipe for competitors of all levels!

In Summary

Every BJJ belt brings about new challenges. The way people face them is highly individual, but oftentimes it manifests itself in similar ways. Purple belts, at a certain point in time, tend to be really difficult as students. That doesn’t mean they’re bad or won’t get past it. However, it’ll help to both understand this and guide them out of it as an instructor, and try and be less of a problem yourself, if you are a purple belt. After all, one day you’ll be the one trying to deal with the BJJ purple belt know-it-all.

Jiu-Jitsu Rules To Obey By When Rolling

The Secret To A Huge Gas tank For BJJ Rolling

Review: Top Rock Turbo DVD By Reilly Bodycomb

Top Rock Turbo DVD By Reilly Bodycomb

Back in the early days of BJJ, when a bunch of Oswaldo Fadda’s guys beats a bunch of Gracie students via leg locks, a huge part of BJJ was swept under a carpet. Leg locks got the bad rep of being a cheaters way to victory for people who couldn’t pass the guard. The modern JIu-Jitsu game has seen leg locks rise to power, mostly though, as attacks from bottom positions. When it comes to the top, people usually think in terms of either passing or leg locking. Well, what if I told you that you can actually do both? That’s exactly what you get in The Top Rock Turbo DVD by Reilly Bodycomb.

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than catching up to the leg locking prowess of Sambo and perhaps catch wrestling it still has a long way to go. Granted, modern BJJ leg locking systems are far better than anything Sambo, Judo or any grappling martial art has to offer. However, the fact that these arts have been using leg locks for much longer gives them the edge. Reilly Bodycomob, for example, is one of the best leg lockers in existence. Why? Because he blends BJ and Sambo to perfection and doesn’t allow to be restrained in his approach. His top Rock Turbo DVD is the best proof of concept when it comes to his take on leg locking.

Where Sambo Meets BJJ

People in BJJ always talk stuff they do not actually adhere to. If there’s one idiosyncrasy about the sport, for me, it is definitely this. People preach respect, yet thrash talking is the norm. Moreover, everyone says leave your ego at the door, and then they hit you with their own oversized egos. I could go on and on, but there’s a point in here somewhere. In terms of the growth of BJJ, we claim to be open to outside influences yet rarely take them seriously. Sambo and catch wrestling moves are great examples.

Top Rock Turbo DVD Reilly BodycombLuckily, there are people out there that have a different way of thinking. Reilly Bodycomb is an American Sambo champion and overall badass grappler. He perfected Sambo over a period of over two decades. Moreover, he did so training under a legend in the sport, Stephen Koepfer. Bodycomb did his fair share of Sambo competition, even fighting in the FIAS Sambo World Cup in Russia ten years ago. Normally as BJJ started to become the dominant grappling martial art, Reilly Bodycomb switched his attention.

As one of the best American Sambo masters, Bodycomb didn’t have to start from scratch in BJJ. IN fact, he is a No-Gi grappler per se, able to blend Jiu-JItsu and SMabo in a way we’ve never seen before. Moreover, he is a huge fan of leg locks, something that makes him a grappling celebrity of sorts nowadays. What you need to know is that his stuff works, and he is one of the best teachers in the grappling martial arts period. The Top Rock Turbo DVD is far from his first instructional, but it does cover a hugely important subject in a very unique manner.

Reilly Bodycomb: Top Rock Turbo DVD Review

The whole hype about the top Rock Turbo DVD by Reilly Bodycomb is due to the fact that it is a leg locking instructional that covers leg locks from top positions. More precisely it covers ways of using guard passes to get leg locks. Unlike most instructions of today, it is not just a passing or leg locking one. Instead, this DVD offers different ways of blending everything together so that you can change between passing and leg locks. Furthermore, it even covers hitting leg locks from top positions after you pass. Oh, and worry not – you won’t be giving away points by looking for kneebars and heel hooks from the top.

This DVD instructional is simple and powerful. In essence, you can pick it up, give it a watch and start performing the moves immediately. Watch it a few times over and you’ll have a foolproof concept of top position leg attacks. Reilly’s teaching style is as unique as his grappling one. He likes to use both broad and precise concepts to explain things and back it all up with plenty of straightforward examples. Moreover, he is really easy to listen to and doesn’t dwell on needless points. Plus, the way this DVD is set up means you start easy and progress to more advanced stuff. Bodycomb likes to build his advanced attacks on the foundation of core simple ones.

The instructional covers several different topics, arranged in a particular order. Namely, the very first area is the leg drag pass position. From there, you get both passing and submission options. Furthermore, the signature “Top Rock” system of Bodycomb is split into a low and high one. Finally, some crazy mount attacks that involve leg locks make sure the instructional has a spectacular ending.

Leg Drags

When it comes to leg drags, BJJ people immediately think back attacks. That’s all great and it actually is the ideal solution. However, the person on the bottom also know that and it may not be as easy as you think. The other option is actually passing to side control. Well, there’s a third option as well now, and that’s going for leg locks. How you get to the leg drag is down to you., although Reilly Bodycomb does share some interesting entries.

Opening the submission chains form here is an inside heel hook. Whenever you end up short on a leg drag, or the opponent switches hips successfully, you end up losing the position. If you like to do leg locks though, you actually gain one. There’s a wicked inside heel hook setup right here that either gets you to tap or gets you straight back to a deep leg drag. Also featuring here is a great and perfectly legal ankle lock form the leg drag. Covering all angels, Reilly also offers a leg lock solution to the issue of turtling up. This one is by far my favorite set up from the Top Rock turbo DVD.  An extremely good tripod ankle lock against inverting escapes completes this portion f the DVD.

High top Rock

Reilly Bodycomb Top Rock Turbo DVDBoth the high and low top rock positions work from another classic passing position – the long step (or backstep) pass. In recent years, we’ve seen it open up leg locks on a regular basis, but never quite like this. In fact, Reilly’s system accentuates both the passing and leg locking opportunities from the position. That said, Bodycomb goes deep into the backstep as both a movement and a position before heading off to leg locks.

In terms of the high vs. low top rock, it is all about whether you’re standing or on your knees. The Top Rock movement is actually a specific move you do to rock your opponent so that you end up in a top leg locking position. This is what makes the Top Rock Turbo DVD so different from others. It teaches you to to stay on top while attacking leg locks. Attacks include inside heel hooks from the honey hole as well as some wicked Smabo kneebars.

Low top Rock

The low top rock once again works of a back-step like position, however lower. It may be setup on its own or a way to get back to the position if an opponent tries s to counter your High Top Rock. A bunch of foot locks provides even more submission options here. Also form the low top rock there a great sequence called “the footloose”, which covers some smooth transitions into either knee on belly or tighter Ashi Garami positions.

Leg Locks From The Mount?

The final portion of this instructional covers the craziest leg lock setups you’ll ever see. They’re not crazy in the sense of being fancy and overly complicated, but in terms of starting position. Knee on belly and mount, for example, are not position you often associate with leg locks. Well, Reilly’s take on it, particularly the “Vegan Mount” is going to change that perception. Reilly Bodycomb figured out the best ways of getting leg locks from any top position, without losing it. The knee on belly setups is by far some of the most useful attacks from that position in the history of grappling.

As a bonus, you also get some X-pass wisdom, as well as a few other bonus moves. A perfect one is a flow, which actually puts all of the stuff together, starting from the leg drag and ending with the back pass and vegan mount. Finally, there’s also a headlock transition to really offer you a well-rounded system.

Conclusion

I’ve always enjoyed Reilly Bodycomb’s instructionals. In fact, this is his second take on the top Rock, and I have to say, it is miles better than the first one. That just shows that Bodycomb’s game is always evolving and he is working relentlessly on new stuff. The top Rock Turbo DVD is the best possible resource for people trying to find that elusive connection between leg locks and guard passes.

Grappling In Cuba

WE all know that Cubo produces some of the toughest athletes in the world. When it comes to martial arts, and grappling in particular, Cuba is nothing less than a breeding ground for Olympic and world champions. That includes both high-level wrestlers and world-class Judokas. Well, one of those standout grappling products of Cuba is Israel Hernandez. Hernandez is a two-time Olympic medalist, multiple times Pan Am champion, and a 6-time winner of the prestigious Juan Ramos cup in Cuba.

Judo Building Blocks – Israel Hernandez DVDBorn in 1970, Hernandez is one of the most knowledgeable and decorated Judokas alive. He conquered a bronze medal on two Olympic occasions, in 1992 and subsequently in 1996. He did so at 65 kg but has also competed in weight classes both above and below that weight. Since retiring from his competitive career, Hernandez has been teaching. During this time, he turned into one of the sought-after Judo coaches of modern times.

Israel Hernandez is a published author and one of the leading experts on the Uchi Mata. SOm much so, in fact, that he can teach you how to do it at a world-class level in less time than anyone else! Speaking of that the Judo Building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVD does precisely that, actually. The Uchi Mata is a huge part of this instructional along with some really old-school Judo training concepts that’ll make you better in next to no time!

Israel Hernandez DVD Review: Judo Building Blocks

If you have the chance to learn from a Cuban grappler, whether it is life, through a DVD, or a digital download, grab it! There’s no need to think twice, as such a chance means you get to learn real secrets of grappling that others do not possess! Israel really does offer a shortcut to learning Judo and odes it in style. Expect to get better fast, but do not expect to learn tens of different moves. Instead, be prepared to become a real master in the Uchi Mata, and everything leading up to it. As a former Judoka and a BJJ grappler for almost a decade, I can vouch that this Judo Building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVD is the real deal!

The instructional contains four different volumes, each carefully covering just one subject. The goal is to really deconstruct and dumb down Judo’s most effective throw – the Uchi Mata. In all honesty, some do call the Uchi Mata the hardest Judo throw in existence. IF you follow Hernandez’s approach, nothing can be further from the truth! Form initial grip engagement and snap downs, through specific exercises to become explosive like Olympic level Judokas, all the way to Uchi Mata essentials that end up in crushing pins, this instructional has it all!

#1 – Snap Downs

The first part of the Judo building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVD is actually something you’d expect to find in a wrestling instructional. Snap downs are basically ways of breaking an opponent’s posture so that you can maneuver them for a throw or takedown. In Judo, though, as opposed to wrestling, it is all about how you grip the Gi. In fact, the way Israel likes to put it is “how to use your hands to throw”.

Judo Building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVDAs it turns out the arms play a huge role in how effective you are with throws in Judo. This portion of the DVD covers the basics of gripping and throws and how to progress to pinning after a throw. There’s also an extended portion on throwing people in different directions using the snap-down method. Versatile, easy to understand, and effective. Perfect for BJJ.

#2 – Developing Explosive Power

This is the one part of this DVD that makes it truly unique. While people sometimes include drills or even conditioning work in DVDs they never do it like this. Israel treats us to some old-school Cuban Judo methodology here. The approach is that you need to be strong and more importantly explosive to be effective. However, instead of doing it in general, Hernandez teaches specific explosiveness. To that extent, you get 6 different exercises that‘ll turn you into a throwing machine, when it comes to snap downs and Uchi Matas. These are Judo-specific exercises that you can do in the gym with a partner, so you won’t need a different facility.

#3 – Uchi Mata Masterclass

The meat and potatoes of the Judo Building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVD is in volume three. This is where he starts to peel off the layers of the Uchi Mata. What I really love about this particular portion of the DVD is that it is divided into two chapters. They are both long and contain full systems that Hernandezexlpasins to perfection.

The first chapter covers some basic tips and tricks for the Uchi Mata. Israel teaches the Uchi Mata by first explaining the 5 mother throws. In other words, those are five simpler, core Judo throws that combine to form the Uchi Mata. This is the Cuban approach. The second chapter covers the Uchi Mata throw, through ha method called 3,2,1. It is a three-step process that ensures you get everything right, every time you do for this throw.

#4 – Pinning Transitions

Finally, the ultimate portion of this instructional is all about pinning, Well, not really as it still has some further information on UChi Matas. Similar to the second volume, this volume starts with some JKudo specific exercises. Here, you get a total of 5. Two of the exercises focus on helping you improve the sweeping leg. The remaining three are all about getting the most out of your standing (support) leg.

Wrapping up are 10 crucial pins that Judokas like to use. Or at least Cuban Judokas. In Judo, a way to win is to keep an opponent pinned for a certain amount of time (around the 20-second mark). As you know this is not easy so Judokas have perfected certain ways of rendering an opponent motionless. Now, with this instructional, you get to learn 10 of the highest-percentage Judo pins in existence.

Final Thoughts

Hernandez is one of the top Judo coaches in Cuba and the world. He has worked with countless combat athletes, including champions like Ronda Rousey and Chirs Cyborg. His mixed old-school and modern approach definitely yield fast results. In all honest,y if the Judop Building Blocks Israel Hernandez DVD is anything to judge by, I certainly hope there’s much more to come from him in the future! Oh, and the instructional is available in both DVD and digital format.

Strength and conditioning instructions are too many to kee pa count of. Furthermore, those claiming to really be able to improve your performance on the mats are far and few between. Well, at least the ones that are worth your time and money. With grapplers the requirements are simple – be strong, but limber at the same time. Bodybuilding won’t do the trick here, but doing nothing but Yoga is not the answer either. Instead, you need a well-rounded approach that won’t take up much of your time or leave you exhausted. It is time to stop your search as the Bulletproof For BJJ training program is the answer. Below is a detailed review of the most comprehensive four-part instructional on getting in the best possible shape for JIu-JItsu.

Meet The Coaches

Who exactly is behind the Bulletproof Fro BJJ training program? The “culprits” responsible are Joe Worthington and James Tomlinson. They are professional strength and conditioning coaches that really understand the requirements of grapplers. How exactly? Well, they both train BJJ, fo course. In fact, they not only train, but excel at it. Tomlinson is a BJJ black belt, while Worthington is a brown belt himself. They spend most of their time either in the gym or on the mats. Their efforts have provided them with the best possible formula for strength and conditioning for grapplers.

There are many great things about the Bulletproof For BJJ program. For instance, it is easy to follow and understand. It is also easy to set up. Even more importantly, it is perfect for everyone, regardless of exp[erience in both grappling and fitness. This is down to some clever programming and removing everything that’s unnecessary. James and Joe provide a no-nonsense approach to preparing for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, you might even consider using the Bulletproof program even if you’re not a gr5appler at all. Check out the play-by-play DVD review below for more information.

Bulletproof For BJJ Training Program DVD Review

The way this instructional work is not unlike others on the subject. You get several volumes, each covering a certain aspect of the program. Throughout, Joe Worthington and James Tomlinson explain exercises programming and how it all relates to BJJ. We’ve seen this already y plenty of time s before. Well, not quite. The one difference between the bulletproof For BJJ program and virtually all others is that this one actually works. Not only that but it’s been tried and tested and it is foolproof. Plus it can fit into anyone’s schedule and greatly reduces the risk of injuries, as you’ll see in this DVD review.

What you can expect this program to do for you is teach you how to train. There are three different programs within the instructional and each has two phases. Depending on what your goals are, you can either choose one or look to integrate them all in an easy to use program. The programs include a general and specific grappling strength program, which has two levels. It also has a two-level mobility program as well as a train-at-home program. The best part is that they’re all easy to connect and set up, even if you have absolutely no previous experience.

Strength Program

The strength portion of this instructional stretches across two volumes. Each of them covers a different level or phase of the Bulletproof For BJJ training program. Here you won’t find the Holy Grail of BJJ strength training. Instead, what you get are precise, in-depth instruction on how to perform the most functional exercise in existence.

Bulletproof For BJJ DVDThis portion contains all the sets, reps, exercises and workouts you’ll need to truly become bulletproof. A great thing is that you also get to adjust the intensity to suit your needs, with options to train anywhere from 1-4 times a week. The program includes grappling specific exercises that build multiple qualities at once. Plus, everything is arranged in two levels, providing you with a program that’ll last you at least a couple of months.

Mobility Program

The mobility program also contains two levels and is probably the most important aspect of this instructional. As previously mentioned in this DVD review, both levels are on one volume. Still, when I attempted certain exercises from this portion of the Bulletproof for BJJ program, I found them to be extremely challenging, Much more than the strength exercises, to be honest.

The mobility exercises form this portion focus on getting you limber enough to train regularly. Moreover, they work in conjunction with the strength exercises, keeping your joints and tendons healthy. The most important role, though is in injury prevention. Joe and James’ approach is to work methodically and thoroughly, using simple exercises and tools. They even include specific warm-ups and cooldowns to allow you to train mobility even when you’re on the mats.

Training At Home

The final portion of this DVD is all about allowing you to train from home. For everyone that’s pressed for time, doesn’t like to train in commercial gyms, or both, this is the perfect solution. Once again, you get a detailed walkthrough of a two-level program. Moreover, Worthington and Tomlinson went through the program themselves, ensuring is really provides what they claim. In terms of equipment, you won’t require anything special. All you need is a spot in your home large enough to lay down. As an alternative, you can also do it on the mats in your academy.

In Summary

Training strength and conditioning for BJJ should be supplemental. This is exactly the portion people forget about. It may be cool to be able to deadlift 500 lbs, but are you really mobile enough to grapple? Conversely, doing a full lotus is also impressive, but that doesn’t mean you’re strong enough to get through a roll. The Bulletproof For BJJ DVD review above is intended to paint a clear picture of what you get from this training program. Having gone through the mobility portion myself, and starting with the strength now, I can guarantee you’ll get even more form it than you expect!

If you ask me, I prefer to learn Brazilian Jiu-JItsuform one of two types of instructors. I like the smaller framed ones, or I like female instructors. The reason behind this is that I am on the small side myself (145-155 lbs). Ass I’ve learned from experience, nothing but technique and high percentage moves is helpful against bigger opponents. In my case, that is pretty much everyone in the academy. In fact, if you really want to learn BJJ, it doesn’t matteр if you are male or female, heavyweight or rooster weight young or old. Learn from technical instructors, whether it is directly or through instructionals. And there’s hardly a more technical instructional out there than the “Absolute Back Attacks” Kristina Barlaan DVD.

A Pure BJJ Technician – Kristina Barlaan

Kristina Barlaan is pretty much a household name when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She is a highly regarded black belt under a legend in the sport – Caio Terra. She is a multiple BJJ titleholder and one of the toughest pound-for-pound female grapplers out there. If you ask me, she is one of the toughest grapplers out there, period.

Barlaan started with Jiu-Jitsu fairly late. The 32-year-old discovered grappling through Muay Thai at the age of 21. While some people might consider that to be fairly late, this was not the case with Kristina. She had the good fortune of starting to train with Caio terra, one of the absolute best rooster weights in the world. Known for his slick technical style, Caio is a 12-time world champion, with ten of those titles in No-Gi. Barlaan had a short stint of training with Gustavo Dantas as well, as a result of moving. In fact, she got her purple and brown from him, before going back to Caio and receiving her black belt in 2015.

Barlaan’s titles so far include gold at the Europeans, Asian Open, Pans and American Nationals No-Gi. All that’s left, it seems is a world title, and that shouldn’t be too far in the future. Kristina is extremely technical and is notorious for her guard work in particular. However, the ultimate finishing position, similarly to her professor Terra, is back mount. And, given both Caio’s and Barlaan’s No-Gi success, you can bet that the “Absolute Back Attacks” Kristina Barlaan DVD is highly effective against opponents of all levels!

Detailed Review  Of “Absolute Back Attacks”  – A Kristina Barlaan DVD Instructional

What this Kristina Barlaan DVD brings is not something groundbreaking or completely different from what we already know. OPn the contrary, “Absolute back Attacks” is a  two-part instructional that covers stuff that we’ve all seen and attempted before. However, this time around, you get to learn things through the prism of technical perfection.  Ther’s virtually no muscling things or relying on strength or speed here. In fact, you might take things as slow and fast as you want, and get to the back and finish without even breaking a sweat. Barlaan’s back attacking game is that good. Normally you’ll need time to master the nuances, but given how everything is laid out in this DVD, that won’t be much of an issue for anyone. In fact, this is a Gi instructional that’s perfect for all levels of grapplers.

"Absolute Back Attacks" Kristina Barlaan DVD The organization of the presented material also very logical. Moreover, this is not just a technical DVD. Kristina offers her entire back attacks system, meaning you get entries, control, concepts, mechanical details, drills, and direct submission attacks. Everything is divided into two parts. The first one features key concepts that make or break the back control position. It also offers several ways of taking the back from a myriad of different positions. The second part goes over some key grip strategies, as well as side control entries. This part is also the best DVD ever recorded on the subject of the seatbelt grip. Submissions feature heavily throughout both volumes of the instructional.

Disc 1 – Concepts And Entries

Kristina really focuses on some of the core basics of the back mount position in the opening sequences of her ‘Absolute Back Attacks” DVD. In fact, about half of volume one, which runs at just over an hour, is dedicated to core concepts. Here, Kristina covers everything in incredible detail from forming a hip connection to controlling an opponent in every direction. The key part here is to understand that the back is a dynamic position that requires lots of resets. Speaking of resets, you get half a dozen different ways to make sure you remain on the back, from knee grames to some seat-belt control essentials.

After the conceptual portion is over, Bralaan focuses on getting to the back. This approach is the best according to me, as there’s no point in learning entries if you do not know what you’re looking for in a position. That said, the leg drag is Kristina’s preferred entry point to the back. It is easy to obtain, easy to hold and provides lots of technical dominance. The entire portion on entering from the leg drag is based on hip connection, which is one of the core concepts from before. Along the way, Kristina blends in a variety of attacks in the form of Ezekiel and arm triangle chokes and armbars. A personal favorite of mine is the cradle back takes a highly efficient way of surprising even the toughest opponents.

Disc 2 – Control And Tactics

In part two of this Kristina Barlaan DVD, she picks up right where she left off. Kristina likes to get to the back from the top, as it is a great competition strategy. To that extent, knee on belly and side control entries are the main subject of the opening portion of Part 2. Another cradle transition feature here, as well as a few insanely good double under lapel back,  takes.

"Absolute Back Attacks" Kristina Barlaan DVD Review The second portion of this volume goes over seat belt control. As simple as you might think this is, it is time to think again. The way you hold the seat-belt determines how successful you’ll from the back. To that extent, Kristina offers you nothing but the highest-percentage, purely technical submissions available. The bow and arrow choke features heavily, as expected. There are also plenty of transitional attacks that allow you to get a choke before you even get complete back control. Moreover, there’s a cool shoulder lock in there that I’d never seen before.

But that’s not all. Let’s not forget that Barlaan is a really high-level competitor, particularly under IBJJF rules. To that extent, she covers osm key competition tips, including how to get to the mount position as a backup. Baralaan also explains the IBJJF scoring system, and how you can make the most out of it. In fact, I’ve never seen anyone cover transitional scoring begore. A few drills bring everything together to complete the “Absolute Back Attacks” instructional.

A Free Lesson Pack

And yet, there is more. If you are not convinced about picking up the “Absolute back Attacks”  Kristina Barlaan DVD even after this review, you can actually catch a great glimpse of it. There’s an option for a free lesson pack which includes several chapters of this incredible instructional. If you want to take a look at her teaching style and type of stuff she demonstrates for your own, makes sure you check out the free portion before getting the DVD.

Conclusion

Learning from highly technical champions is always a joy. For me personally, every opportunity to learn from a high-level female grappler has proved to be a real game-changer. Given the importance of the back mount position, and Barlaan’s pedigree, this is one instructional no one can afford to miss out on. Get it now, even if you’re not that big on attacking from the back just yet. At one point in time, the  “Absolute Back Attacks” Kristina Barlaan DVD is going to become your favorite. I guarantee it!

SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament – Where Quintet Meets EBI

SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament 2 Full Results

It is such a fun time to be a grappler! Less than ten years ago, all that grapplers had were short clips of perhaps the IBJJF Worlds, or maybe Pans/Europeans/Brazilin Nationals. Okay, ADCC has been about it for long too, but that was it. Then, something changed as Metamoris appeared and the professional Jiu-Jitsu scene burst into life. Following suit was EBI which subsequently gave birth to a whole different grappling scene. Now we have not only a whole bunch of pro tournaments with different rule sets, but we also have some crazy tournament formats. The latest one to emerge is the SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament.

The SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament is a brand new format that is a part of Fight 2 Win promotions. It features a brand new hybrid style that’s bound to catch on. So far, we’ve seen only two editions of it, and we’re more than eager to see more! That said, the two events held so far had some huge grappling names participating, making them really fun to watch. Plus, there’s a lot more than just straight out matches as the format includes Judo and matches for purple and brown belts as well. Something to keep an eye on for sure!

SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament – A Brand New Breed

So what exactly is the SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament? To be honest, there’s no really easy way to explain it. Basically, it is a hybrid between a Quintet-style tournament and the Eddie Bravo Invitational. Yeah, just when you thought grappling tournaments couldn’t get crazier, SUBVERSIV shows up.

SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament 2The Quintet grappling tournament is another format that popped up during the past year. It is based on Japanese wrestling rules and features 5 mean teams that battle it out between themselves. To that extent, there are no weight categories, and there are some wacky rules to it that make it cringe-worthy at times. For example, once the fight hits the ground, you have a certain amount of time to submit an opponent, otherwise, they stand you up. However, it does provide for some exciting matches, as we’ve witnessed so far.

EBI is pretty much the gold standard nowadays, or at least it was. With Eddie Bravo taking it into a combat Jiu-Jitsu direction, EBI is not what it used to be, at least in terms of grappling quality. However,  the rule set of overtime rounds is still the best one around.

Well, the people at Fight 2 Win decided they can blend the two together and provide us with a unique format of submission only grappling tournament. SUBVERSIV features two five-person teams that go up against each other. Each match is 10 minutes long and fought under standard EBI rules. The teams feature grapplers from different male weight categories 9 (-145lbs, -165lbs, -185lbs, -205lbs) as well as an overweight female one. The first team to win three matches is victorious and takes home a $10.000 prize. Talk about unique!

SUBVERSIV 2 Team Results – 10th Planet vs. Red Bowie

A couple of days ago, the second edition of the SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament took place in L.A. on July 13. The tournament featured a 5 vs. 5 team tournament, black, brown and purple belt matches, as well as Judo matches. All in all, it was the perfect grappling experience for any fan of grappling martial arts.

SUBVERSIV Grappling TournamentOf course, the thing that drew the most attention was the 5 vs. 5 team tournament. Reigning champions 10th planet, who defeated team Lloyd Irvin in the first edition were back to defend the title. The team consisted of Geo Martinez, Rubin Rivera, Kyle Chambers, Kyle Boehm, and Elvira Karppinen. The challengers came in the form of team Red Bowie featuring Joao Miyao, DJ Jackson, Ronaldo Junior, Gabriel Almeida, and Pati Fontes. As you can see, this proved to be a highly attractive line-up!

The honors once again went to team 10th Planet, who defended their title convincingly, losing just one match out of five. The only loss came in the second bout when DJ Jackson beat Ruben Rivera via riding time, equalizing 1-1. Kyle chambers turned things in favor of 10th Planet once again by beating Ronaldo Junior also via ride time. Kyle Boehm managed to catch Gabriel Almeida in an RNC to solidify the team’s position before the most exciting match of the night saw  Elvira Karppinen tap Pati Fontes via heel hook. The most anticipated match of the night was actually the opening one, between Geo Martinez and Joao Miyao. It was the Freakozoid that came out victorious, tapping Miyao with a rear-naked choke in overtime.

What’s Next?

To be honest, I have no idea what kind of tournament is going to be next. I really thought that between the nutty Japanese Quintet rule set, EBI’s combat Jiu-Jitsu and Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground tag-team we’ve seen it all. Of course, the moment I thought that SUBVERSIV Grappling Tournament emerged to prove me wrong. And I love it!

In all honesty, the fact that there’s so much diversity when it comes to grappling tournaments is really refreshing I remember when we couldn’t wait for the next Metamoris to come out back in the day. The same held true for the first EBIs. Nowadays, the selection is so vast, you can hardly keep track of all the high—level grappling tournaments. From the classics like Polaris to the ever-present Fight 2 Win and the innovative Kasai, we seem to have an abundance of ways to test out our Jiu-Jitsu. To be honest, I can’t tell you which the best rule set is, as most of them require lots of further testing.

The SUBVERSIV grappling tournament is certainly something different. If you ask me, the 5 vs. 5 team idea is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I did have some reservations about the original Quintet rules, though. It seems Seth Daniels found the remedy, by taking the best out of both Quintet and EBI. I can’t even start to imagine what will come next, but I know what I want to see. I want more of the SUBVERSIV style tournaments, both with and without the Gi!

Seth Daniels DVD The Fight 2 Win SystemIn the meantime, check out Fight 2 Win and SUBVERSIV’s creator’s Seth Daniels DVD set. The instructional is called “The Fight 2 Win System” and is a two-part set that wil turn you into a submission machine

Conclusion

The main question with the SUBVERSIV grappling tournament is “Will it catch on?” As far as I am concerned, I think it is a real hit and it is the most entertaining and efficient ruleset format available today!  Apart from the fact that it provides a great platform for professional Jiu-Jitsu, I also expect it to become a widely accepted tournament format worldwide. And I  certainly hope it spills over to the Gi Jiu-Jitsu scene as well!

Georgi Ivanov DVD Review: “The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia”

Georgi Ivanov DVD Review: "The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia"

Saying that wresting is making a comeback thanks to the rise of Jiu-Jitsu and grappling would be an understatement. Wrestling has always been an important part of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but as the art evolves, it becomes ever more present. It is not just the way you take someone down, it is also about the manner and amount of control you get over an opponent. The front headlock and the cradle are just a couple of examples of how wrestling complements BJJ. In that sense, we’re also witnessing the rise of wrestling instructional intended for both BJJ grapplers and wrestlers alike. “The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia” is one such instructional that every grappler needs. Want to learn more about it? We have a complete play-by-play  Georgi Ivanov DVD review right here!

Techniques List

I will be completely honest. Before dong this Georgi Ivanov DVD Review, I had never heard of the man before. As it turns out he is an Olympic level wrestler who is a real powerhouse! He is also a hugely popular figure in Bulgarian wrestling, which is one of the best in the world! Moreover, the focus of his instructional is the 2 on 1 position, which is an integral part of modern BJJ. Whether you’re going for takedowns or looking to get a leg lock from the bottom, you’ll need to understand the 2 on 1 system. This DVD is your best resource to date!

Bulgarian Olympic Wrestling

In order to correctly do this Georgi Ivanov DVD Review of his “2 on 1 Encyclopedia” I had to do a bit of research on Bulgarian wrestling as well. I already know that Bulgarians are very formidable wrestlers that usually rule competitions of all levels. Wrestling in Bulgaria has a decade-long tradition. The country’s wrestlers were so good at one time, that they had both World and European champions, as well as regular participants in Olympic games.  Nowadays, the sport is in somewhat of a decline, but there are still hotspots for learning the secrets of Eastern European wrestling in Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian wrestlers are not just known for their technical prowess but also their conditioning. Do you know that Bulgarian bag that’s a mainstay in most BJJ gyms around the world today? Well, it was developed there for the needs of wrestlers in particular. That’s how much attention wrestling got in Bulgaria at one point. Even today, they still have world-class wrestlers, although most of them move abroad looking for better options. One example is Georgi Ivanov.

Georgi Ivanov is a 29-year-old wrestler who was born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.  He moved to the US at 16 and managed to become a very proficient wrestler in the process. Georgi wrestled for Boise State and later ended up at Maryville University as an assistant coach. He competed at the 2016 Olympics managing to reach the round of 16 in the -74 kg division.

A Detailed Georgi Ivanov DVD Review: “The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia“

The best part about this Georgi Ivanov DVD is not the fact that he is an Olympic level wrestler. It is that he is an Olympic level wrestler with years of teaching experience under his belt. That makes him the perfect blend of coach and competitor required to produce a top-grade instructional. Hands down ‘the 2 on 1 Encyclopedia” is definitely one of the best wrestling instructionals of all times.

This DVD contains four volumes, organized in a very orderly and easy-to-follow fashion. IT also features something we’ve only seen in Danaher DVDs so far – a flow chart. The flow chart makes integrating everything you learn in the DVDs much easier than by just watching the content. It is also a perfect way to keep track of how far you are.

The volumes themselves contain instructions on the basics – entries and control. The 2 on 1 position is a seemingly easy one but it does involve a lot of fine details, all of which are presented here in detail. Volume two moves on to cover some finishing options, like arm triangles and gator rolls. OF course, some further takedown avenues also start appearing here. More advanced wrestling techniques and even some Judo hybrids are the subjects of volume three. Finally, the fourth volume wraps it all up with a defensive-minded takedown system.

Volume 1

Georgi Ivanov DVD "The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia"In the opening volume of this Georgi Ivanov DVD, the focus is on the essentials of the 2 on 1 position. As we know this is one of the staples of the sport and, along with the arm drag and duck under are the most effective entries in the sport of wrestling. There are a few entry options here that pretty much remove any obstacle you might run into. The part on climbing the arm is my favorite and is a real game-changer.

In terms of takedowns, the 2 on 1 Encyclopedia features a lot of them. They are all based on the initial 2 on 1 and work either on the near or far side. Georgi opens up with an arm drag and quickly moves on to his signature fireman’s carry. Speaking of the fireman’s carry, in this DVD you’ll find variations of this throw you’ve never thought possible. There is, for example, the Matrix fireman carries that is just as funky as it sounds. Straightjacket throws and a few trips only make things more interesting as this volume draws to a close.

Volume 2

Picking up the pace, Ivanov switches his attention to some stuff that’ll particularly interest BJJ folks. The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia offers a window to front headlock attacks and Ivanov demonstrates how to tie together head and arm finishes along with some wicked gator rolls form the feet. Let’s just say nobody is going to be left standing after you set them up.

Furthermore, takedowns in this volume include some nasty lateral drops and ankle picks. However, Ivanov still refrains from going deep into ankle pick territory just yet. Instead, he offers alternatives in the form of high crotches and a mini system of Turks that is brutally effective.

Volume 3

Volume three is where you’ll find stuff that might just be a bit too advanced for complete beginners. They require some previous knowledge of grappling, but boy, are they effective! From the champions head pinch, through the backbreaker (take note of this one) all the way to the nightmare, Ivanov teaches some signature innovative moves that’ll catch anyone!

Georgi Ivanov DVD Review: "2 on 1 Encyclopedia"I particularly enjoyed the wrestlers O Soto Gari, which is a modification of the old Judo classic. As far as trips go, this one is guaranteed to get everyone to the ground. The best part about it is that requires next to no effort, unlike its Judo counterpart. Further innovations in the form of “the rolling thunder” and “the unknown double” make this volume on of the best grappling DVDs ever!

Volume 4

Finally, as this Georgi Ivanov DVD comes to a close, he decides to share some defensive strategies. However, given his style and preference, this is more of a counterattacking DVD than a defense one. There are a few chapters here that focus on moves like the O Soto Gari and ways of closing the gap. However, the majority of the volume is all about using basic wresting takedowns in a defensive manner. Those include ankle picks, duck under, back trips, arm throws and many more. A very useful 2 on 1 drill concludes this highly informative grappling DVD instructional.

In Summary

There’s no doubt that “The 2 on 1 Encyclopedia” Georgi Ivanov DVD is a high-quality grappling instructional. However, its application is far greater than just among wrestlers. In fact, is applicable not only in grappling martial arts but also in MMA settings as well. The 2 on 1 is one of the safest ways of establishing connection and control, without giving up anything to your opponent. AS such, it should be in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum as much as it is in wrestling ones.

Stephen Whittier DVD Review: “Pillars Clinch And Takedowns”

Stephen Whittier DVD Review Pillars Clinch And Takedowns 6 Part Instructional

The usual impression of high-level Brazilian JIu-Jitsu is that of concepts and principles that meet techniques in order to make movement fluid and seamless, yet brutally effective. In wrestling, it is mostly explosiveness and raw strength that meet technique in order to slam people to the ground. What if I told you that there’ is a way to use BJJ methodology and apply it to key wrestling takedowns? Check out the following “Pillars Clinch And Takedowns” Stephen Whittier DVD Review to see how one of the best in the business does it.

Learning BJJ ina conceptual fashion is gaining in popularity nowadays. It is a great approach if you ask me, to help you organize the massive amount of information that Jiu-Jitsu has to offer. That said, concepts and strategies won’t really get you far on their own. This is particularly true when it comes to aspects of BJJ that are not as fine-tuned as ground fighting. When it comes to takedowns, most of the highest percentage moves are adaptations from wrestling. SBG standout coach Whittier supplies us with the ultimate BJJ “Pillars Clinch And Takedowns “ instructional and we supply you with a detailed Stephen Whittier DVD review.

The SBG BJJ Philosophy

Stephen Whittier is one of those coaches that live a rather unassuming grappling life. Those who know him literally worship him and his teaching methodologies. However, he is far from the public eye, unlike some of the mainstream coaches of today. Still, when you take into account his background and affiliation, this makes a lot of sense.

Stephen Whittier DVD Review Pillars Clinch And takedownsStephen Whittier is a part of the famous SBG gym (Straight Blast Gym) in Portland. SBG is a worldwide gym, with more than 35 affiliate gyms around the world. The founder of the gym is Matt Thornton, a Chirs Haueter black belt and one of the best grappling teachers alive. His Rickson Gracie lineage means he has a very distinct style of JIu-JItsu, one that he shares with Whittier. Stephen Whittier is a third-degree black is a second-ranking coach in the SBG gym, with only Thornton having a 4th-degree black belt.

Whittier is a perfect match fo SBG, he shares their love for the conceptual side of things. He is also a well versed martial artist, as most of the coaches there are. That means the likes to innovate and integrate aspects of different arts int his grappling style. This is very apparent in any of his DVDs so far, but none more than in the “Pillars Of Clinch and takedowns”. As you’ll see from our Stephen Whittier DVD review, he has found the perfect approach to integrating BJJ and wrestling in a highly efficient system.

Stephen Whittier DVD Review

In previous Stephen Whittier DVDs, we’ve seen him cover a bunch of BJJ specific subjects. However, we haven’t;’ seen an instructional quite like the ‘Pillars Clinch And Takedowns” form anyone so far, including Stephen. That said, this instructional is something many grapplers have been looking for. I had to take the long route and go through countless hours of Judo and wrestling DVDs to discover my own takedown system for BJJ. If only this DVD had been around, my job would’ve been immensely easier. Still, I learned a lot from the Stephen Whittier DVD review, and I’m not about to stop there.

This DVD set has 6 volumes, which is more than your usual 4-part BJJ instructional of today. AS you’d expect from an SBG guy, the organization is pristine. In fact, you won’t hit a takedown until you reach DVD number three of the set. However, in the meantime, you’ll become a master of positioning in the clinch. That means winning every grip fighting scenario and being virtually impossible to be thrown by others. The third an fourth volume covers some integral clinch fighting techniques that inevitably lead to takedowns. SOm of the most basic takedowns also makes an appearance here. The final two DVDs cover the highest percentage takedowns you can set up using the information from previous volumes. All in all, it is a complete step-by-step system that will never fail you. Plus, you get over 6 hours of high-quality material by one of the best in the business.

Let’s move on to the chapter-by-chapter Stephen Whittier DVD Review of The Pillars Clinch And takedowns” instructional.

DVD 1 – The Introduction

Apart from the mandatory introduction, Whitter kicks things off with a portion on some of the position basics in regard to stand up grappling. Head and head position get a lot of attention here, both individually and as a system. The snap-down is as expected, one of the initial entry points to any clinch position.

From there on, Whittier touches upon the basics of clinching and how to remain in the clinch. He uses the necktie as a connection point and goes further into dissecting concepts like base and conenctio.n. In terms of attacks, he offers routes to the single underhook, Russian 2 on 1 and head and arm pinch, which are all clinch variations.

DVD 2 – Setting Up The Clinch

Part two of this Stephen Whittier DVD review covers the chapters on establishing an attacking game from any of the previous clinch positions. This means creating and using opening which will eventually lead to setting up takedowns. To that extent, the concepts of sensitivity, connection, and pressure, which are staples of the SBG philosophy are in the opening chapters.

As the instructional head to a more technical direction, the arm drag takes a central role. Stephen covers how to create the perfect angles as well as how and when to use different grips in order to drag successfully. A good portion of this volume goes into dissecting arm drags before returning to snap downs. Even more concepts on weight distribution, pressure, base and pummeling complete this second volume of the ‘Pillars Clinch And takedowns” DVD.

DVD 3 – Cinch Domination

Stephen Whittier DVD Review Pillars Clinch And Takedowns 6 Part InstructionalPart three heads off into the depths of actual clinch fighting. As you know, the clinch offers opportunities for both persons, so you need to know how to get the advantage. Having an opponent try and beat your frames is one of the most common issues you’ll encounter. Whittier has the perfect solution to it right at the start of this volume.

There is a lot of pummeling in this portion of the instructional, and rightly so. If you can’t pummel yourself to a top clinch position, you’re better off pulling guard. What Whittier offers are options for pummeling and pummeling that work in a very progressive manner. The goal is to ultimately reach any of the positions covered in the previous two volumes. Tips, tricks, and concepts in this DVD include beating underhooks and Whizzers, as well as adding in head peels and body pummeling. All in all, this is the most comprehensive clinch fighting DVD you’ll ever watch.

DVD 4 – Introducing takedowns From The Clinch

The fourth DVD starts with the underhook clinch position. It offers options that include both single and double underhooks. The goal is getting there, staying there, and ultimately attacking from there. To that extent, Whittier includes information on a bunch of counters that’ll make your underhooks much easier.
The first takedowns in The “Pillars Clinch And Takedowns” instructional also appear here. Some opening sequences include body lock and corkscrew takedowns form the over/under clinch. There’s also a trip throw in there for good measure as well as a very detailed single leg. During the Stephen Whittier DVD review, I spent a lot of time sifting through this particular volume.

DVD 5 – Takedown Combinations 1

The last two DVDs of this set are all about executing high percentage takedowns from all of the clinch positions covered thus far. Starting with knee blocks Whittier slowly transitions towards body locks, single legs, and some trips. Interestingly, he uses a high inner reap to extreme success, which is something we’re not used to.

As the DVD progresses, attention shifts toward different kinds of takedowns. My personal favorite the front headlock makes an appearance along with some sneaky duck under. Of course, the clinch setup also changes, as all fo these work best from a necktie variation. That said, duck unders conclude this DVD, with options that range from hip block takedowns to high crotch finishes.

DVD 6 – Takedown Combinations 2

The final volume begins with the classic double leg takedown. However, it is anything but classic as here it is all about concepts and preparation rather than speed and power. Here the clinch sets up a hight crotch, and the high crotch opens up a double leg. This is a high-level sequence that guarantees both control and a high percentage finish. To that extent, there are also single-leg options from the high crotch, also covered here.
2-on-1 and front headlock takedowns begin the conclusion of this DVD, and with it, our Stephen Whittier DVD review. The ever so popular cradle also makes an appearance here, with an awesome “head in the hole” setup. The last chapter in this series is one on stuffing shots yourself. In true SBG style, it is all down to connection and weight rather than just mindless sprawling.

Conclusion

IF you take into account the vas number of takedown DVDs out there, it is probably a miracle I ran into this one. Still, even though I know exactly what I want out of a takedown, this DVD really changed my game. The “Pillars Clinch And Takedowns” DVD set is a must-have, especially if you suck at the standing portion of BJJ.

BJJ is truly amazing, isn’t it? The moment you think you have something figured out, you discover a new aspect to it and you go right back to being a beginner. This is true for every technique, but more than anything, it’s true in terms of some of the most basic positions. The half guard is a great example. Just when you think you got the hang of it all, from tornado guards to butterfly half guard and the Coyote guard, a different aspect of the half guard emerges. Thanks to the Pillars: Half Guard Bottom DVD” courtesy of Stephen Whittier you now have an incredible resource available. Why is it so different than others? Well, for starters it is all about the invisible JIu-JItsu behind the half guard positions. Rings a bell?

High-Level BJJ Learning Via Proxy?

Ther are certain black belts in the world that we’d all love to be able to learn from. It just so happens that those few that are on everybody’s grappling bucket list ar the onest that are most secretive about their ways. Who knows, this secrecy might just be a part of the charm, who knows? The fact of the matter is that if you get to spend a day with the likes of Marcelo Garcia, Rickson Gracie or John Danaher, you don’t know where to start. Given the large interest and the fact that they all run highly successful academies, BJJ instructional are the best way to gain insight into their systems.

The problem is that coaches of that caliber, usually stay away from producing instructionals that cover their entire system. Danaher now has an incredible DVD collection that’s growing every month. He is also probably the only one that doesn’t spare many details. In the case of Marcelo though, his online library offers only snippets of moves, without something to connect them. And, in Rickson’s case,  you’d be hard-pressed to find anything you can make sense of in video format. This is where proxies come in.

The best way to learn Marcelo’s, or in our case, Rickon’s take on a particular move is by using high-level black belts from their system. Stephen Whittier is a black belt under Chris Haueter and is a part of the SBG family. That means he has lots of time training with the likes of Matt Thornton and Henry Akins. In other words, he really understands and, more importantly, knows how to teach the fundamental concepts of Rickson’s style. To a certain extent, this “Pillars: Half Guard Bottom DVD” is an instructional that covers subjects of the position nobody has successfully taught before.

The Pillars – Half Guard Bottom Stephen Whittier DVD Review

It seems Stephen Whittier, a 3rd-degree black belt, second only to Matt Thornton in the SBG chain of command is on somewhat of a run. He has been tirelessly releasing DVD instructional, most of them as part of the “Pillars” series. Just recently I came across his takedown DVD that’s a part of this series. It seems now that he is complementing it with the absolute best half guard bottom DVD to ever come out!

This instructional is actually the perfect blend between a technical and a conceptual BJJ DVD. You won’t get a lot of philosophical talks here, nor is it just chapter by chapter of unrelated moves. Instead, this is a well-0rounded approach to being effective off the bottom half guard. That means being able to retain the position, recover if needed, avoid passes and smashing and being able to sweep and/or submit or get to a better position (mount or back). The instructional has a total of 5 parts, each lasting around an hour and a half. That right there is more than 7 hours of high-quality material on the half guard, from a perspective nobody has covered before!

Part 1

The way Stephen Whittier opens up this instructional is slow. He covers basic stuff like defending head control and positioning your arms to build frames. This is all stuff you’ve seen before right? Well, you’ve seen them done, but you’ve never heard anyone tall you why you do a particular thing and what’s the underlying idea behind it.

Stephen Whittier Pillars: Half Guard Bottom DVDAs this volume goes on, more basics come to our attention. Ways to get that elusive and tricky underhook also make an appearance, although II have a feeling these might just be the ultimate solution to this common problem. The one chapter in this part of the “Pillars: Half Guard Bottom DVD” that is worth getting the entire set is the one on bridging. As you’ll learn, after going over how to connect to your partner, there’s a time to bridge and a time to shrimp. And nobody can teach you which is better than Stephen Whittier. Guard recovery nad pulling half guard are the chapters that help complete this opening volume.

Part 2

In the second volume, bridging makes a comeback, although now in a much more detailed fashion. The bridge and roll is an essential half guard bottom move. Moreover, it’s not just something that stops working after the blue belt. As you’ll see from Whittier’s demonstration, you’ll be able to do it on the highest-level people in your school, once you understand it.

The main subject of DVD #2 in this set is actually passed prevention and retaining the half guard. Form preventing the knee slice pass, to using frames in a much more intentional manner, it is all in here. Speaking of frames, creating them with your hips and shoulders is definitely something never seen before. Hook sweeps, featuring everyone’s favorite butterfly half guard complete volume two. However, expect a much more fundamental approach here, as opposed to the flying rolling leg locks one we’re all used to.

Part 3

Part 3 of the “Pillars: Half guard Bottom DVD” goes into another huge concept of Rickson Gracie and SBG Jiu-Jitsu – posture. To be honest, posture is a key element of BJJ in general, it’s just not to the forefront of things. The “Stayin Alive” posture is one concept you’ll never ever forget again. Not to mention that it’ll revolutionize your half guard.

Reversal also makes their way here, from simple versions all the way to reversing the Whizzer. Do not be fooled into thinking you can go straight to these moves though. All of them employ stuff that Whittier covers previously, from bridging to the ‘Stayin Alive” posture. The best part? The chapter near the very end of this volume where Whittier tells you how to combine sweeps. This is not just another sweep chain from the bottom half that your opponents will quickly figure out. It is the most foolproof way of sweeping ever devised for BJJ!

Part 4

The first chapter of volume four actually has it’s rooted in the final one of the previous volume. Whittier likes to connect not only stuff within a volume but the parts of this DVD themselves! The subject here is getting to the back. The way of getting there is by passing the arm, foolishly simple yet incredibly potent!

Stephen Whittier Half Guard Bottom DVD ReviewAfter the back take, the focus switches to another aspect of half guard hat nobody thought of covering before. What do you do when you run into counters to your common sweeps? Well, if those sweeps are the hip bump, and back roll sweeps, you pick this Stephen Whittier instructional up. Moreover, you get a few more bonus ways of getting to the back. AS if this was all not enough, this is the spot where the “Pillars: Half guard Bottom DVD” starts looking at submissions. The Kimura and Guillotine are first on the schedule here. From basic setups to painful finishes and ways to shut down every counter, this will skyrocket your submission rate form the half guard. Plus, both subs tie in perfectly with the sweeps Whittier shows.

Part 5

The final portion of this instructional is something truly special. The first half of it goes on with submission attacks. Why stop at the guillotine and Kimura when you can hunt for loop chokes, Omoplatas and triangle chokes? The triangle finishing details will completely blow your mind!

Still, just when you thought Stephen Whittier was over, there’s more. The secrets of the Z-guard are the next to be revealed. If your knee shield is suffering, this DVD is the cure. From brand new details on setting everything up, all the way to underhooks, reversals, and sweeps, there’s an entire mini system in this volume. Also, Whittier explains one more highly elusive aspect of invisible JIu-JItsu – the connection principle. Given that he explains it in a half guard sense, it makes a lot of sense compared to broader conceptual explanations. In fact, it is with the subject of connection that this “Pillars” Half Guard Bottom DVD” ends on the highest note possible.

Conclusion

It is hard to get the right DVD nowadays, with the BJJ world flooded with titles. Still, sifting through all the clutter, there is an instructional here and there that’s really going to matter, regardless of your level. Usually, Stephen Whittier has more hits than misses and this last one is probably his best work so far! The “Pillars: Half Guard Bottom DVD” is instructional for those that really love playing the position. This is not just a half guard BJJ DVD this is the blueprint to achieving greatness from the position!

“Scientific Shots” – An Ed Ruth DVD Review

An In Depth Scientific Shots Ed Ruth DVD Review

Takedowns are not the problem in BJJ. getting them is. What we don’t get is that the hardest part is setting a takedown up. The one portion of a takedowns people usually mess up is the actual shot. The shot is what connects the grips and positioning and the actual takedown. To that extent, it is also what’s hardest to time and executes. It is the one portion of takedown where people hesitate the most and it makes all the difference. Well, now you have a way of removing this obstacle once and for all. “Scientific Shots” is an Ed Ruth DVD that’ll take care of all your takedown issues for good.

There’s a clear reason why wrestlers do those penetration step drills over and over again, year after year. As BJJ grapplers we’re usually lazy and like to declare that we know something long before we even understand it. Rolling usually allows for plenty of adjustments or introducing strength and even luck. After all, getting a scramble after a failed attempt might just land you in a neven better position. Well, with wrestling, there’s no way around certain points of the techniques, such as shooting. the thing is, nobody before this Ed ruth DVD has ever explained shots so clearly. at least not publically, anyway, which is exactly where the ‘Scientific Shots” instructional comes in.

From Penn State to Bellator – Ed Ruth’s Career

Ed Ruth is certainly enjoying life as of late. Just a week ago he got a second-round knockout win over Kiichi Kunimoto at Bellator 224. He is currently on the rise in Bellator, with a pro-MMA record of 7-1 in the middleweight division. Having dabbled in welterweight as well, Ruth is anything but one dimensional. If you take a look at his pro-MMA record, you’ll notice a bunch of TKO and KO wins. Most of that is down to his boxing experience, but where he truly shines is actually wrestling. Ruth is a 3 time NCAA champion, wrestling out of a real lions’ den – Penn State. He also represented Team USA at the World Wrestling stage on a couple of occasions.

Ruth has always enjoyed martial arts. As a little kid, he spent most of his time playing with stuff like staff and nunchucks. He then discovered wrestling at high school and never looked back. After Penn State, he transitioned successfully into MMA and is no one f Bellator’s top prospects. The 28-year-old is also enrolled in BJJ although still quite far from being a black belt.

What he is a black belt in, though, is definitely wrestling. His entire career he was an extremely feared wrestler, particularly when it came to takedowns. He has a way of reaching the legs long before people know what is happening. It is like he’s there one moment and the next he already has both your legs wrapped up. Now, finally, Ruth decides to share it with everyone through the ‘Scientific Shots” Ed Ruth DVD. To be honest. I’ve never seen anyone do an instructional on shots before, so I decided to give it a try. Suffice to say I did the right thing.

A Review Of The “Scientific Shots” Ed Ruth DVD

This is not the first Ed Ruth DVD instructional I’ve reviewed. he also has a wicked instructional on cradles that I recommend to everyone involved in either wrestling, BJJ or MMA. So, I already knew what to expect to a certain point. technically speaking, you can’t go wrong with an ed Ruth DVD. it’s not just about camera work and the microphones, that stuff is now down to a science. It is how Ruth approaches teaching that gives everything a very different perspective. Well, t least in my case, but I’ve never really been a wrestler to start with.

This DVD instructional runs at just above two hours and has two parts to it. the subject is an unusual one, but it shows how knowledgable Ruth is. You might not want to pick up a DVD that only looks at shots right now, but trust me, stay in grappling long enough and you’ll be looking for it everywhere! The first volume covers some basic shot setups from collar ties, as well as some crazy traps. The second one takes care of a bunch of different shots that pretty much guarantee you’ll end up with a takedown. Furthermore, there’s hardly a takedown that is not covered in this two-part instructional.

Volume 1

Scientific Shots Ed Ruth DVDAs far as wrestling DVDs go, there’s one main difference compared to BJJ – there’s no lengthy introduction. Wrestlers like to get right down to work, much like on the mats. This Ed Ruth DVD is no different, and he goes right into collar ties straight off the bat. The first couple of chapters cover how to transition from a post to a collar tie, which is the first step to setting any shot up. As ruth states, unless you get the grips, there’s no point in actually shooting.

Speaking of shooting he opens the account by explaining how to do a rollout ankle pick in a few different ways. the best part, however, is the one that comes next. The chapter’s name sounds enticing enough – the misdirection double. Let me just say this – when you use this setup people are going to expect you to do anything but a double. And that’s the beauty of it! A few Ed Ruth specials also feature here, as a standing cradle to a badger trap and some neat arm drags that BJJ folks, in particular, will love in the “Scientific Shots” instructional.

Volume 2

In the second portion of the “Scientific Shots” instructional, Ruth focuses on providing lots of variety. Here, the focus is once again on the shooting portion of things, but the finishes vary a lot. This means you can get a bunch of different takedowns with easy, thanks to how Ruth breaks down shots. The reverse neck pinch is one of those moves that looks like something out of Star trek. ti is based on pressure to the enerves but works like a charm, to say the least. I have to admit, as a big fan of trips, I particularly enjoyed the portion on trip variations.

Scientific Shots Ed Ruth DVD ReviewThe high crotch series is also one to keep an eye out for. Don’t let the DVD fool you, although it is only one chapter, Ruth goes deep into it! He covers a whole host of high crotch setups, from initial setups to the perfect way to shoot. ON top of everything, he covers shot finishing in a different chapter, breaking it down to the finest details. An outside shot to a single leg along with a few more nasty ankle picks and arm drags completes this volume. In fact, the very last chapter is all about clearing collar ties, in order to either re-engage or shoot ina very sneaky and effective way!

Final Thoughts

Before I picked this Ed Ruth DVD up I had no idea how important the actual shot was. As it turns out there are precision and finesse to it, rather than just exploding and hoping for the best. Still, the “Scientific Shots” instructional is definitely one of a kind and not your usual wrestling DVD. There’s no good reason not to have this one, and a whole bunch of great ones to add it to your collection. In other words, if there was ever a shortcut to learning wrestling takedowns for BJJ people, it is this one!
