White Belt Defense DVD by Joel Bouhey - Review

Ah, those white belt days. The moment you become a blue belt, you start talking about those days as if they were fond memories. Well, you can stop, we all know you’re lying. We’ve all been there. It is a hard, punishing and demoralizing job to be a BJJ white belt. However, the harder it is, the better the reward will be when you emerge on the opposite end. Still, nowadays, it seems that even a white belt’s experiences are not that hard. When I was a white belt there was not an instructional around, el talon one aimed at helping white belt get through their toughest days. Techniques List

I would’ve probably given up a limb if someone gave me a blueprint to defending when I was a white belt. Actually, I almost gave up a few of them anyway. However, jokes aside, having a map to guide you through those crazy times is more than welcome and certainly very helpful. Okay, the first few months are still going to suck, but you have to learn what grappling is all about. However, the subsequent year and a half or so don’t’ have to be as hard as it was for previous generations. “White Belt Defense” is a BJJ DVD aimed to help beginners cope with everyone else in the gym. And Joel Bouhey did a fantastic job with it. It is short, sweet to the point and contains just the right amount of information!

Joel Bouhey – The Maui Jiu-Jitsu Ambassador

When you think about Hawaii and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one name pops up to everyone’s mind – BJ Penn. Yeah, he is a crazy talented grappler who got his black belt in like three years or something, However, he is far from the only high-level Jiu-JItsu black belt on the island. In fact, Maui’s own Joel Bouhey might have something to say about it. The Luis Heredia black belt is not only high level but also has a unique and very effective style. His “White belt Defense” instructional is a great way of sharing some of it with us all in the grappling community.

In fact, if there’s one thing that people can associate with Joel it is the Falcon guard. Yeah, Joel is the man behind it, a variation that’s just as crazy effective as it sounds. However, it is not the focus here today. Joel is just as innovative all across the board as he is off his back. The Hawaiian’s latest effort is one that white belts across the globe will be extremely grateful for. Talk about winning a large audience at once!

The Importance Of Defense Early On

White Belt Defense DVD by Joel BouheyWhen you’re a white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, just getting to the gym to train is a really difficult decision. Going back to a spot where people smash you and tear you apart while you have no idea what’s happening requires character. Still, those that battle on, get to enjoy grappling for life. However, if there’s one thing that a white belt can do to actually have a better time as a beginner is to discover defense. And that doesn’t just mean in training. Apart from the odd white and blue belt, everyone else sis till going to tap you and manhandle you for most of the time. However, when it comes to fellow white belts, and blue belts you’ll become a very difficult riddle to solve.

One great aspect of focusing so much on White Belt Defense is not just to help you through training. If you have any intentions of competing as a white belt, having a defensive game is going to be a much better way to become accustomed to the stress of grappling tournaments. In fact, it is one great way of making sure you do not do stupid mistakes and give your self every chance to win. And Joel Bouhey has the tool to help you.

Reviewing The “White Belt Defense” DVD

The “White Belt defense” Joel Bouhey DVD is not like any other instructional out there. For once, it is not split into many parts that go deep into the philosophy of Jiu-JItsu. It is also not one of these instructionals that break the positioning of every finger step by step. Instead, it is a short DVD, with the sole focus of helping you survive with the least amount of information possible. After all, as a white belt, you still have a lot of BJJ learning ahead of you.

The DVD opens up with one section that fans of the Falcon guard will recognize immediately – the overhook. Once you’re on your back and in closed guard, Joel’s go-to spot is securing an overhook. Unsurprisingly, this is actually a concept many higher belts might want to revisit as well. That said, Joel doesn’t spend too much time in any position in order to avoid confusion. Rather, he switches to passing the closed guard immediately, offering key ways of surviving. Among them, you’ll find ways of dealing with the head hug, the collar grip as well as what to do when the opponent’s hands are on the mat.

Joel Bouhey White Belt Defense DVD ReviewIn the second half of the “White Belt Defense” DVD, Joel covers yet another key aspect for beginners – dealing with mount. Innovative as he is, he does a modified mount escape first. Next, he offers another way out through the back door mount escape. Before he wraps up with an awesome armbar bait, (great for any belt) he also covers some basic drills in the form of shrimping and bridging.

The final chapter of the instructional is actually a live demonstration of how mount escapes work. As a white belt, this is something I could’ve only dreamed about.

Conclusion

All in all, it is great f=of Joel Bouhey to make a DVD that’s focused on helping white belts. Moreover, one that’s there to help them understand “White Belt Defense”. The guard and mount are tow of the spots most white belts will find themselves in constantly, Moreover, they’re not that hard to deal with, particularly with fellow beginners. So, this is instructional to give you an edge over your peers. Who knows, it may even frustrate so some of the purple/brown/black belts in the gym!

Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament: The Verdict

Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament: The Verdict

If there was ever a bad time to be injured in Jiu-Jitsu, it has to be nowadays. There are just so many tournaments out there, for both professional and amateur grapplers! Some are awesome to take part in, while others we can just watch. Or imitate, if we decide to take the rulesets and do our own tournaments. Whatever the case, w have tournaments popping left and right, some making sense and others that are, err, on the crazier side. Now, we have a brand new format in a long line of team-based grappling tournaments inspired by Quintet Grappling Championship. Only a week ago, the Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament had it’s very first, breakthrough edition. Believe me, when I say, it did not disappoint, with both the format and the roster of grappling names.

In the modern-day and age, it seems that becoming a professional grappler is not such a far-fetched concept anymore. Granted, BJJ might not be an Olympic sport (yet), but it does have a huge competition scene. And, if some of the biggest names of today are anything to judge by, it pays handsomely. While not everyone that trains Jiu-Jitsu can become a pro grappler, it certainly is good to know that this is an option out there. Particularly as there are now huge leaps and bound in the evolution of grappling tournaments. Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament is just the latest example in a long line of new-breed style tournaments. However, it stakes a claim as one of the best right from the get-go!

The Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament

The Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament is the brainchild of grappler extraordinaire a UFC veteran Uriah Faber. Probably inspired by the likes of Quintet and Subversive, or even Submission Underground’s tag team antics, Faber came up[ with the concept along with Keith Veltre and Sean Wheelock. For the sake of clarity, Veltre is a las vegas entrepreneur and boxing promoter, while Wheelock is a world-famous announcer. That’s a real dream team right there, particularly when you throw in UFC star Paige Van Zant, who had the duties of a color commentator alongside Faber.

Kinektic Submission Grappling TournamentThe format of the tournament is yet another 5 vs. 5, team-based concept. However, it introduces several original features which, as we saw from the first vent, do guarantee lots of entertainment! Generally, there are four teams in the tournament, each consisting of five grapplers. However, Kinektic pulled out all stops and brought nothing but the greatest names in grappling for each of the teams in the first event. As in Quintet, the winning grappler stays on the mats, and there are grapplers of different weight classes in each team. Furthermore, even if a team loses three in arrow, the remaining two grapplers get to fight for pride points that can count at the end. Unlike Quintet, though, there are no stand-ups here after just a short while on the ground.

The idea behind the Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament is to bring unity to the grappling world, as Faber himself stated. The goal is for the tournament to become the crème of the crop of grappling tournaments. Everyone, from the competitors to the announcers and promoters high-caliber only, in order to guarantee great entertainment. Moreover, Kinektic streams live and exclusive on UFC Fight Pass. That means it has the largest combat sports streaming platform available at its disposal.

All the Action As It Happened

So far, the inaugural event featured four high-profile team,s one of which really stood out even from the beginning. The first Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament took place in California, at the Anaheim Business Expo Center on August 16, 2019. The teams that took place were Team BJJ Fanatics, team Lionheart, Team SUG and Team Lights Out. Still, it could only go one way, really, when you see who was on each team. Team Lionheart had the likes of Brain Sparrow, Joseph Warren, Scott Morton, James Brasco, and Enrico Cocco, with Anthony Smith as the team captain. Team SUG, lead by Chael Sonnen included Gabriel Checo, Rafael Domingos, Jorge Rodrigues, Ronny Markes, and Guilherme Vasconcelos. Rico Rodriguez, Joe Riggs, Mansher Khera, Will Weed were in Chris Lytle’s Lights Out Team.

Team, BJJ fanatics, which ended up taking all the accolades was the most impressive of the bunch. It featured captain Gordon Ryan, as well as Nicky Rodriguez, Craig Jones, Edwin Najmi and Lachlan Giles. Certainly, not a team you want to piss off. In fact, Team BJJ Fanatics was so dominant, that two of the team members, Najmi and Craig Jones never even got to grapple at all.

Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament WinnersIn an extremely impressive fashion, Australian grappler Lachlan Giles single-handedly took out Team Lights Out in the first round. Team SUG then edged out Team Lionheart to reach the final. BJJ Fanatics were waiting, and delivered a swift win, with Nick Rodriguez winning one and drawing one before Gordon Ryan dispatched of the remaining three SUG team members.

A superlight between LFA’s Raufeon Stots and UFC veteran Anthony Birchak rounded of the experience, albeit in a draw.

What We Learned

The Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament was certainly a success. It provided us with an improved Quintet format and lots of exciting matchups. Also, Faber’s take on inviting only “heavy-hitters” from the grappling world certainly paid off. That said, even then teams endured lots of mix up prior to the event. For example, Ryan stepped in for Jake shields just days before the tournament.

With an avenue like the Anaheim Business Expo Center and a live stream on UFC Fight Pass, Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament was always going to be a hit. Even the weigh-ins the day before were entertaining, with Ryan showing up in his cape and crown again. Moreover, the tournament went without snags, probably because of all the experience of the bot the competitors and organizers. While this is, for now at least, a tournament reserved for the best of the best it certainly bring s a lot to the grappling scene. Plus, with the likes of Faber and VanZant as part of the team, they have strong ties with the UFC which can only be good for the tournament.

With a fun ruleset, perfect organization and flawless streaming, this is certainly one tournament we’ll keep an eye on. Throw in Quintet, Subversive, SUG, EBI/CJJ, and Kasai and suddenly, there’s a lot of high-level BJJ to go around! Finally!

Final Thoughts

In a world of submission only tournaments popping everywhere, Kinektic Submission Grappling Tournament is a real leap. The sole fact that it is run by true professionals and features legends makes it special, Not to mention having a dream first edition, mainly due to the BJJ Fanatics team. Still, we hope to see a lot more form it, preferably sooner rather than later.

ADCC 2019: BREAKING Last Minute ADCC News

ADCC 2019 Latest ADCC News

It is September 2019 and we all know what that means for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fans! It is the time for the biannual edition of the analog of the Grappling Olympics – the ADCC! WE have to say that the build-up has been crazier than ever. We saw declined invitations, huge upsets in the trials, crazy injury setbacks, and some very notable absences. However, even with everything that’s happened leading up to the event, it still promises to be as entertaining as we’ all expect it to. Probably even more. SO, as the countdown to ADCC 2019 begins we are here to bring you all the latest ADCC news on a daily basis! We’ll update this article daily until the ADCC, so make sure you check back regularly!

It has been a hectic year in grappling, particularly in No-Gi. SinREce the last Abu Dhabi Combat Club in 2017, a lot has changed in the grappling world. In fact, there were probably more changes in the last couple of years than in two decades before. For one, the quality of Jiu-Jitsu is crazy high. Moreover, there are a bunch of different No-Gi tournaments out there featuring crazy rules that really have people going. That means that this year’s ADCC has some big points to make. If it is to retain its title as the Olympics Of Jiu-Jitsu, that is. I have no doubt it will, with the crazy brackets that are setups so far! In other ADCC news, there have been some major changes since our last update of the ADCC 2019 fighter’s list so stay tuned!

Latest ADCC News

So, let’s go over the latest ADCC news first, and we can focus on other things later. As of now, precisely a month before the event, the brackets are complete. That doesn’t mean they’ll stay like that, however. Until now, we’ve already seen some major changes occur. For one, we all had the Gordon Ryan Injury scare when he tore his knee ligaments. Well, it seems that shooting instructionals did him good, as he is raring to go. IF his latest performance at the inaugural “Kinektic Grappling” tournament is anything to judge by, he is more than ready. So, the first thing we can confirm is that last time’s Heavyweight winner and absolute runner up is definitely going to show up for ADCC 2019!

ADCC 2019 Latest ADCC News And PreviewNext, up, it seems that reigning -66kg champion Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” is not as lucky as Ryan. Just last week, the multiple times ADCC champion announced he is pulling out. However, the latest ADCC news state that there is a perfect substitute for the legendary grappler – his own son. Kenedy Maciel, a fairly recent black belt under his father, is going to step up and compete in the -66 kg division instead. While not exactly at the level of his father, young Maciel was been winning left and right. Was his son’s participation the reason Cobrinha pulled out?

In other ADCC news, the -77 kg division welcomes yeat another huge up and comer in the form of Dante Leon. The former -66 kg North American Trials Winner from GFT comes in at the expense of Dillon Danis. However, given that he is on a winning run, we’ll enjoy watching his displays in one of the toughest divisions much more than Dillon’s I presume.

Who Else Is Missing? * UPDATED (27.09.2019)

While we’re on the subject of people who are missing, some of the greatest names of grappling are nowhere to be seen. Some of them do have legit reasons, like Mackenzie Dern who just became a mom. We would’ve definitely enjoyed seeing a potential rematch between her and Elvira Karppinen. After all, Elvira beat Dern, to everyone’s surprise, last time around.

Among those with an unclear reason for going AWOL, despite being invited is 2019 World Champion Mikey Musumeci. He is another notable absence from the -66 kg division, although his replacement, Richard Alarcon is not one to sleep on. The CJJ champion and Kasai veteran are definitely one to keep an eye out for.

Also missing from the ADCC 2019 -66 kg division is one grappler we all love to hate – AJ Agazarm. Along the lines of Rodolf Vieira, Kron Gracie, Mackenzie Dern and others, it seems AJ favors MMA much more than the ADCC> Due to a “conflicting schedule” the Gracie Barra competitor will not show up in California this year. IN his place, though, we do get a real wild card – 16-year-old Tye Ruotolo, the youngest ever ADCC competitor. The Atos team member is already a big name in IBJJF circuits and will certainly bring something else to the table.

Among the last-minute pullouts at ADCC 2019 are some legendary names the likes of Keena n Cornelius and Dillon Danis. Keena dropped out due to a nasty infection, whereas Danis stated knee injury as the reason. Romulo Barral also dropped out for reasons undisclosed.

The Ryan Brothers And The Danaher Death Squad

Of course, as expected, the eyes of everyone watching the most prestigious No-Gi event in the world are going to be on the team that’s considered the best ever in No-Gi. That is the Danaher Death Squad. Well, they will surely be present, however, in a much-diminished capacity. First up, Gary Tonon, who many expected will not compete because of his MMA career, actually stepped up late on. He comes in teh -77 kg division to replace Nicky Ryan. Nicky, in turn, moves to the -66 division to replace Ethan Crelinsten who had to pull out because of injury.

As far as the youngest competitor that has competed in the ADCC so far goes, we’re going to see him again, albeit a year older. Nicky Ryan gets a spot at the ADCC 2019 edition via winning the second North American trials. However, instead of trying his hand at the -77 kg division, Nicky is again going to be in the lightest weight brackets, like two years ago. Interesting to see how he matches up with Kennedy Macial, if it comes to that.

ADCC 2019 Best ADCC News Gordon RyanFinally, we have the “King”, Gordon Ryan. Last year champion and the runner-up was always going to be a huge favorite. That said, his gruesome knee injury, which has barely healed, does raise a few questions. It is not that he won’t be able to headline most ADCC news again. It is more a question of how hard is it going to be for him to operate without the preparation wh was planning for? Definitely something we can’t wait to see!

A Preview Of Possible ADCC 2019 Elite-Level Matchups

With ADCC 2019 looming, and the divisions pretty much set. Bar last-minute pull-outs, what are some of the matches we could witness? At the lightest male category, -66 kg, that would have to be the battle between Cany of the household names like Geo Martinez, Paolo Miyao or Bruno Frazatto. Of course, everyone will be keeping an eye on young Kenedy Maciel too. Now, Nicky Ryan also throws a wrench in everyone’s plans with the late move down.

At the -77 kg division, the man of the moment Lachlan Giles is bound to provide lots of action whoever he faces. There’s also Lucas Lepri and Edwin Najmi to make things interesting as well. Furthermore, in the -88 kg division, we’d definitely love to see who is going to be enough of a challenge fro Craig Jones. Will it be Adam Wardzinski, or perhaps Matheus Diniz? At -99kg we have, fo course Gordon Ryan. Just about any match with him in it promises to be fireworks. Still, I’d particularly enjoy a fight with Vinny Magalhaes. Finally, among the super heavyweights, Kaynan Duarte will welcome the likes of Eldar “Yakuza” Rafigaev and Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu who just won the IBJJF No-Gi Heavyweight GP.

Finally, in the two divisions reserved for the ladies. Here, there are several matchups that’ll get everyone on the edge of their seats. In the -60kg division, Bea Mesquita reigns supreme, but Elvira Karppinen, Bianca Basilio and Jena Bishop are hunting for her title. Let’s not forget FFion Davis too, after the year she has had. Of course, whoever faces Gabi Garcia is going to have a tough time, but Tayane Porfirio is one that might just end up surprising everybody.

Wrapping things up is going to be the absolute champion, Felipe Pena. This time, he will face Andre Galvao in the ADCC 2019 superfight.

When And Where?

While it may not be ADCC news to some, this time the tournament takes place in the USA. California is the destination, with the venue being the famous Anaheim Convention Center in L.A. From September 28 to September 29, we’ll enjoy some of the best No-Gi fights in history! Stay tuned for regular updates and more ADCC new as we get closer and closer to the event!

Bottom Side Control Submissions – A Nasty Surprise!

Bottom Side Control Submissions - A Nasty Surprise

Whenever you get caught in a bad spot in BJJ, the first reaction is to get out. AS you’ll see from this article, and subsequently, experience, this is not the best approach. Yeah, escaping is good, but how many times have you given up submissions in the process? There’s a reason why certain position brings you so many points – they’re dominant. Now, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get away. It also doesn’t mean you can’t launch devastating attacks of your own. After all surprising someone with stuff like bottom side control submissions is one of the best ways to win a match.

As a position, side control is awesome. You get to project weight on the person on bottom and you have a bunch of variations to switch between. Plus you can submit with just about any kind of submission. If you’re the person on the bottom, you have to endure weight, look to fend of submissions and all the while try and get out of the position. That’s a lot of work for anyone, regardless of level. Well, have you heard the quote “work smart, not har”? It applies perfectly to bottom side control. What would be the perfect way of completely turning such a bad BJJ position to your advantage? How about a few nasty and effective bottom side control submissions?

Counter Attacking From Bad Positions

You might often hear something like “there are no bad positions in BJJ, just more difficult ones’> Well, let me tell you that this is not true at all! IF you’ve ever had a black belt on your back or a 100+ heavier competitor in side control you know what I mean. Not to mention all the 50/50 and leg lock craziness of today. Bad spots certainly exist and if you need more proof, just take a look at the point system in Jiu-Jitsu. Do you know all those spots that bring you a bunch of points? Try not to get caught in them. They’re the bad spots.

That aside, bad spots do not necessarily mean a match is over. As you know, there are few answers to any question in BJJ. The only thing you need to do is actually ask the correct questions. In terms of side control, it is not about escaping. Sure, getting out is the ultimate goal. However, the first and most important goal is staying safe. No point in wasting time and energy escaping just to end up in an armbar right? So, whenever you’re on the bottom, stick to the well known defensive principles – keep your elbows close, protect your neck and try to create distance. Only then can you think about the next step.

Speaking of the next step, let’s look at some “lazy” BJJ for a change. Instead of bridging and doing other energy-consuming stuff, why not get a submission of your own? What’s that? There are no side control submissions from the bottom? Well, that’s not the case at all. In fact, there are several, and the only thing you need to know is which of them work, and which will get you in even more trouble.

Surprise Bottom Side Control Submissions

Below, we have several bottom side control submissions for you that will achieve one of two goals. You’ll either get a tap without having to waste energy or you’ll get out easily. What’s more important you might just do both at the same time with our selection of bottom side control submission too.

Before we go into the submissions themselves, let’s talk principles a little bit. We already covered that you need to stay safe in bottom side control first and foremost. When you’re looking for submissions from there, you also need to know one important thing – you need to be effective. That mans nasty, sneaky, surprising, fast little submission holds that don’t require elaborate setups. To that extent, you do not have many options that won’t leave you exposed. However, the four submissions we’ll go over her are the exception to the rule. They work at the highest level of grappling and are applicable in both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

Reverse Triangle

Bottom Side Control Submissions Reverse TriangleThe most famous of all bottom side control submissions is the reverse triangle choke. It is also a move many claims won’t work. Well, the trick, as you might know, is in the details. Once again, for a successful reverse triangle from the bottom side, you need to be safe at first. Next, you want correct arm placement before you et into the submission itself. What you want here is to trap the arm that’s under your head. This is imperative. From there, turn to the side, catch the opposite arm with your legs and remain there as long as you want. You’re safe. To finish, simply push on the head and warp up the triangle.

D’arce Choke

Bottom Side Control Submission D'arce ChokeThe D’arce choke, as I’ve stated on multiple occasions is my one favorite choke out there. One reason for that is that you can slap it on from virtually anywhere. Speaking of anywhere, bottom side control is definitely one of the best position to set it up. For this, you need to have an overhook around the arm that’s near your hips, unlike the triangle. That’s all. This will keep you safe and make your opponent move into the D’arce themselves. All you need to do is rotate to get your head under their hips. Form there, the arm you have overhooking theirs is all set up for the choke. Just get the figure four grip and finish right there, or sweep and tap from the top.

Squirrel Lock

Bottom Side Control Submission Squirrel LockThis is one of the most attractive submissions in all of BJJ not just among bottom side control submissions. It is an innovative move, proven to work at black elt by its founder, Oliver Geddes who is a Roger Gracie black belt. For the Squirrel Lock, your focus is on the far side arm once again. This time, though, you want to grip the wrist and place your nearest knee-deep inside the crook of the elbow. Once again, this is your position zero safe spots. Form there you use the other leg to establish a figure four grip on the arm.IN essence, you finish with a Kimura with your legs from the bottom. Or, you can roll the opponent on their back and get them from the top. It’s up to you.

Americana Counter Submission

We left the simplest and sneakiest of our bottom side control submissions last. Many people think the Americana from the bottom is just a waste of time. However, if you get it right, it can actually turn into your go-to move from bottom side control. This is, in fact, a Hail Mary move that works when you’ve missed out on staying safe as your number 1 goal.

Bottom Side Control Submission AmericanaWhen an opponent tries to get you with an Americana and has their grip in, you need to think of your own submission. First, though, you need to keep your arms safe by grabbing your own wrist with your free arm. Then, use this to roll your opponent over so that you’re not only safe, bot on top. Finally, the Americana is going to be right there for you to return the favor.

Final Words

Submitting people is what we’re all in BJJ for. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise, we’re all looking for that tap any chance we get. The satisfaction of submitting someone is even bigger when it comes as a complete surprise. These bottom side control submissions are guaranteed to both get you fast taps and lots of satisfaction. You just need a bit of drilling to get used to them.

Edwin najmi DVD: Review Triangles And More Triangles

A submission DVD instructional is nothing new in today’s grappling world. They are everywhere, featuring everything, from crazy stuff that’ll never work to new takes on old classics. However, there are only a few true, proven submission artists among those demonstrating the moves. It really does take a submission hunter to truly explain how a certain submission hold works. One of the very best out there regardless of opinion is definitely Edwin Najmi. He is a real submission machine, capable of everything, from D’arces to wicked back chokes. However, he is also a real wizard when it comes to triangle chokes as well. His “Triangles And More triangles” DVD instructional is the best guide to the triangle choke you’ll ever find. At least if you really want to get good at them.

Techniques List

Edwin Njami is a grappler who is fun to watch. Granted, he might not win all his matches, but he can guarantee one thing – he’s always on the hunt for a submission. Gi or No-Gi, Najmi’s matches are high paced and highly entertaining to watch. This is not something many grapplers, particularly modern ones, can freely claim. As such, Najmi is also the perfect teacher to teach submissions to competitors. Actually, he is a great teacher to teach them to anyone. However, what you’ll get in the “Triangles And More Triangels” DVD is a short and sweet blueprint to turning the triangle choke into your highest percentage attack. How could you not take it

The Submission Machine – Edwin Najmi

Najmi is a high-level black belt under the illustrious Romulo Barral. As such, the 28-year-old is one fo the most attractive competitors of today. He is never shy of going for the flying and attractive. What is most impressive about it is that his moves work against the best black belts of today! An aggressive grappler by trait, Najmi is not only a threat to his fellow lightweights, but also to anyone and everyone in the open class too. Moreover, he is extremely well versed in both Gin ad no-Gi JIu-Jitsu.

Edwin najmi Triangles And More Triangles DVDSome of Najmi’s most distinct titles so far include a Gold medal at the ACBJJ Lightweight Grand Prix, A Pans Championship title as well as a FIVE super league world title. NO to mention all the other medals in the Worlds, Europeans, Abu Dhabi Pro, and others. And that’s before we even touch on his success at sub-only professional tournaments. IN fact, just recently he was part of the dominant BJJ Fanatics Team at the brand new Kintektic Submission Grappling tournament. The Gracie Barra representative is not just a real submission artist but also has a favorite move – the triangle choke. A real spider guard aficionado, thanks to Romulo Barral’s teachings, Najmi is able to slap on a triangle on just about anyone.

If we take a look at Najmi’s record, we can see that more than half of his wins are by submission. Out of those, chokes seem to be the preferred method, ranging between RNC, triangles and D’arce chokes. In fact, Najmi has instructionals out on all of them. However, his “Triangles And More Triangles” DVD instructional is actually one that stands out even amongst his own work.

Triangles And More Triangles Edwin Najmi DVD Review

The “Triangles And More triangles” Edwin Najmi DVD is one of those instructionals that you sit down and watch in one breath. Actually, it is not even that long. This is not a multi-part instructional lasting for tens of hours and talking about anything and everything. This is a highly specialized instructional that focuses on just one aspect of only one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu move. As such it is the perfect tool for competitors looking to really hone in on their triangle game.

IN terms of organization, the DVD has three distinct sections, each containing around 7 chapters. The total running length of the DVD is just under an hour. During the time, Edwin Najmi shares his knowledge on the triangle as a submission, as well as all the major concepts associated with it. To that extent, he also shares a whole host of entries, mainly from his go-to spider guard. Thre’s also the closed guard triangle, as well as crucial troubleshooting information. And, of course, it wouldn’t be an Edwin Najmi DVD if it didn’t contain his infamous flying triangle with al the juicy details!

Triangle Bonanza

As the DVD begins you immediately understand this is a different class of an instructional. Najmi wastes no time and there are triangles even in the short introduction to the DVD. OF course, as any high-level black belt, Najmi bases his triangle game off of concepts. Thos mainly pertain to grips and distance management, something he covers in detail ion the first few chapters.

Moving extremely fast, right after some closed guard basic is the flying triangle. Since Najmi considers it to be a basic setup, you get to learn it early. After you see how Edwin likes to do it, you’ll understand why it works even against black belts. Ther are lots of takedown faints and combos that actually make the flying triangle possible to execute. Also in this portion are chapters covering the sitting guard triangle and some details on posture.

Spider Guard Setups

The spider guard is notorious for opening up submissions as opponents struggle to deal with it. It is one of the best Gi guards you can play and certainly a great tool for competitors. Romulo Barral, a seasoned competitor himself knows this very well. That is exactly why he had Najmi work on his spider guard game from very early on. Throw in the fact that Najmi is a lanky guy with long limbs, and you have the perfect storm for a triangle master.

Edwin najmi DVD: Triangles And More Triangles ReviewAs you’ll see in this middle portion of the Triangles And More triangles DVD, the spide guard is perfect for this submission. Najmi shares his entire game, from the basics of the guard, to sweep and submission combos. Moreover, everything works and is dialed in so that even white belts can understand int. For all you spider guard experts out there, the details on triangle hunting are astonishing.

Closed Guard And Troubleshooting

Before he wraps this DVD up, Edwin Najmi also covers the closed guard triangle in extreme detail. After all, this is a basic setup that works perfectly to this day. As such, Najmi rally has lots of insight to offer, mostly in th form of crucial tips and tricks and small adjustments that make all the difference. In a real high-level manner, he ties in stuff like the flower sweep and lapel guard combination with the triangle from the bottom. That way, he offers a system that’s extremely attack-minded. More importantly, it stays based on fundamental moves like triangles and flower sweeps, guaranteeing it’s efficiency.

The final few chapters cover troubleshooting, where Njami answers just about every unanswered triangle question out there. In fact, this might just be the most informative part of this instructional all together!

Conclusion

Edwin Najmi is definitely ana aggressive and entertaining competitor. Learning from him is a bonus, particularly when it comes to his best moves. And there’s nothing he does better than a triangle. The “Triangles And More Triangles” DVD really contains everything you’ll ever need to know about this submission. All ti takes is going through it carefully a couple of times.

Neil Melanson Instructional: “Shin Whizzer System” Review

A Review Of The Neil Melanson Instructional: "Shin Whizzer System" DVD

So, we’re back again with yet another one Neil Melanson instructional. What is there left to say about the man or his work? Nobody can blend in different grappling martial arts than the Ground Marshall himself. Still, even with som much elite level content, he still finds ways to surprise us. Wrestling, BJJ or any kind of grappling, they all use a variation of the Whizzer. However, Melanson is definitely the first one to do it with the help of his legs. His latest instructional is the Shin Whizzer System DVD which breaks down this brand new concept across four different volumes.

A Review Of The Neil Melanson Instructional: "Shin Whizzer System" DVD
Techniques List

We all love ourselves a brand new move that’ll piss out pretty much everyone in the gym. The only trouble with moves like this si that people wise up to them pretty quickly. Well, if you go for an entirely new take on an old move, you might just have better success with it. And if you take it to a whole new level and use an entire concept-based system, you’ve got something new, efficient and exciting. That’s exactly what this Neil Melanson instructional is full of. The Shin Whizzer System DVD is a blueprint to a never-before-seen No-Gi grappling system of control and attacks that literally nobody is going to expect.

A Modern Day Catch Wrestling Neil Melanson Instructional

Neil Melanson is one of the greatest grapplers alive, a former Air Marshal and supreme coach, blah, blah blah. Seriously if you have no idea who Neil Melanson you must have been living under some mats. If you’d like to know about him, and all of his work, which is plentiful, by the way, you can check out our review of his entire collection. IF you want the ultra-short version, Neil is a grappler who you need to learn from. Period!

Melanson has a unique and highly unorthodox style of grappling that makes him one of the modern BJJs unsolvable puzzles. His rich catch wrestling, Judo and Sambo background is pretty much responsible for introducing so many new concepts to Brazilian Jiu-JItsu. There’s no precise way to describe his style other than effective, and not very legal, in terms of IBJJF rules. However, his work is applicable both in the Gi and No-Gi and he is a joy to watch. Seriously, I doubt there’s a better spoken grappling coach out there. Furthermore, the man is tireless as the “Ground Marshall” is just full of surprises. He releases DVD after DVD, all of them containing grappling knowledge that has a huge impact on the entire sport.

This latest Neil Melanson instructional, called the Shin Whizzer System is the perfect example. I mean, ok we do Americanas and Kimura’s with the legs from time to time, but doing a Shin Whizzer? The Whizzer is a spot that offers amazing upper body control both standing and on the ground. In essence, it is a version of an overhook, on that is a staple in wrestling. While wrestlers use it mostly to control the torso and prevent takedowns, Neil provides us with plenty more brutally effective ways to use the Whizzer.

The “Shin Whizzer System” DVD Review

Neil Melanson’s DVDs, just like his grappling style, tend to stand out from the crowd. He likes to cover all related material when he goes over a subject. The way he does it is by really going deep into every possible scenario. In fact, you could say that your “usual” Neli Melanson Instructional contains chapters with scenarios rather than concepts or techniques. That way, he manages to incorporate everything and help you build a complete game. Furthermore, one chapter in a Neil Melanson instructional lasts much longer than in your garden variety BJJ DVDs. You might get only a few chapters per volume, but the length of each volume is still well over an hour. Moreover, all the material is elite-level and proven to work in both BJJ and MMA.

The Shin Whizzer DVD, in particular, is one more four-part grappling instructional by Neil Melanson. Each volume covers a different, yet related aspect of the Shin Whizzer System. AS expected, it starts with an introduction. In fact, the entire first volume is all about fundamental concepts behind the Shin Whizzer. This is understandable, as it is a brand new concept in grappling. Moving forward, you get a blend of BJJ and catch wrestling submissions that you can catch from the position. Volume three goes into some funk wrestling stuff, including crazy subs and smooth transitions to better spots. Finally, volume four connects the shin Whizzer to the headlocks, introducing a new bunch of attacking possibilities to the mix.

#1 Shin Whizzer Concepts

Neil Melanson Instructional: "Shin Whizzer System" DVDFirst things first- what the hell is this Shin Whizzer? Well, just like a regular Whizzer, only you use your shin instead of your forearm. Confusing, I know. But bear with me. The Shin Whizzer is not some wacky move that you can pull off standing. On the contrary, this is a Whizzer variation intended for ground fighting.  In fact, think of a hybrid between a knee shield and a dogfight position. That’s the easiest way to describe the Shin WHizze for now. That said, Melanson does it much more Justine when he explains it in the opening two chapters.

Apart from the concepts, he also shares a key entry into the position. In fact, the way the Shin Whizzer System is actually set up is that it works as a kind of a guard. I say kind, because the angle and positioning are weird, to say the least. That does not mean it is not effective, though. One thing that’s glaringly obvious is how easy you can take someone’s back. In fact, this is exactly what Melanson covers in the final chapter of the first volume of the Shin Whizzer System DVD.

#2 Shin Whizzer Submissions

Volume two, and it is time for this Nei Melanson instructional to really kick into Ground Marshall gears. In other words, it is time for some brutal, signature Melanson submission options off of the Shin Whizzer. Up first is a leg lock, something of a specialty of Neil. The submission itself is a knee compression, however, the angle of getting it is brand new – back mount. In fact, it is the back mount acquired via the Shin Whizzer from the previous volume.

The submissions that follow come in all shapes and sizes, beginning with the triangle choke. Speaking of which, it is a Senkako to a helicopter triangle to make things attractive and interesting. In a tribute to one of his teachers, Gene LeBell Melanson also demonstrates the LeBell lock, which is a variation of an Omoplata. Finally, a leg lace and wicked D’arce-Kimura combo attacks complete the second portion of the Shin Whizzer System DVD. Halfway through and already the number of submissions is larger than most other grappling instructionals out there.

#3 Shin Whizzer Funk Moves

Volume three heads deep into Neil Melanson territory. Here, you get a taste of something different, to say the least. Things like the back step swing reverse triangle body lock and a cruel biceps lock are clear examples of what you can expect. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Neil Melanson Instructional: "Shin Whizzer System" ReviewA Judo Style Senkaku follows and it is particularly impressive. This where you see how Neil connects grappling martial arts together. He starts off from the Shin Whizzer, a wrestling modification, and ends in a modified Judo move, which is the Senkaky, Genious and extremely effective. Furthermore, he demonstrates a few half guard moves to introduce even more versatility. The power half to a triangle finish is one, followed by a Ricky Lundell –style funk roll. Wrapping it all up is a funk roll that opens up a D’arce from the Shin Whizzer.

#4 Shin Whizzer Headlocks

Finally, a real threat for all guillotine lovers out there. IF you were wondering why there were no guillotines so far, even though there;’s at least one in every Neil Melanson instructional, it is because they get a volume of their own. Neil sure loves guillotines and everything front headlock-related. So, he found a way of obtaining a brutal front headlock from his brand new Shin Whizzer System.

The arm in guillotine is first, with some crazy detailed tips on gripping and finishing. Following suit is one of my most favorite moves ever – the Shultz front headlock. From there, Melanson shares both transitional attacks, as well as a new take on the classic Shultz choke. A kimura that stems off the Shin Whizzer System completes this volume, but not before Neil covers a turning transition from the Shin Whizzer.

In Summary

By now, we expect crazy, effective and never-before-seen stuff from a Neil Melanson instructional. However, the Shin Whizzer System DVD is something else entirely. It is not just new, it is revolutionary. It is brutally effective and bound to work against grapplers of all levels. In fact, it is something we’ll start seeing in tournaments in no time, so make sure you’re among the first to start using it!

Xande Ribeiro DVD review: Diamond Concept Of Defense

Xande Ribeiro Diamond Concept Of Defense DVD Review

There’s something special about the old-school generation of BJJ grats. Actually, they might feel old school to us, but they’re certainly not behaving like they’re old. People like the Ribeiro brothers, Marcelo Garcia, Megaton and others are still going strong, despite their age. They’re not only avid competitors but restless as teacher s too. Xande Ribeiro, the charismatic younger brother of Saulо Ribeiro is certainly a great example. Just when everyone thought he is getting old, he destroyed legends at the last ADCC getting the bronze. He now offers a different type of DVD, one that covers a unique and highly efficient defense system. ‘The Diamond Concept Of Defense” is a groundbreaking BJJ inсtructional that’ll change the game forever!

Xande Ribeiro Diamond Concept Of Defense DVD Review
Techniques List

It is those black belt tips and trick that are a product of years o training that always make the difference. Whether it is rolling with colored belts, or competing against fresh black belts, experienced grapplers will always have an edge. It doesn’t have lots to do with technique but rather with the overall approach to grappling. As such, Xande Riberio has one of the calmest and yet most aggressive grappling styles in existence. Now, one key aspect of it, the “Diamond Concept Of Defense” finally sees the light of day as he shares his decades of knowledge with the BJJ world.

The University Of Jiu-Jitsu

Alexandre Xande Riberio was born in 1981 in Manaus, Brazil. He began training Jiu-Jitsu fairly early, at the age of 10. However, it became obvious right away that Xande was not just another kid training BJJ. In fact, there’s a stunning statistic for Cande’s early years. During his first 7 years of training BJJ, Xnade Riberio only lost 2 matches in the competition! When we factor in that his entire record is 160 wins and only 40 losses, you can see that this is a different class of grappler that we’re talking about!

Xande Ribeiro Diamond Concept Of Defense DVDAt the very beginning, Xande trained with the Monteiro Brothers before moving to Rio. There, he aligned himself with the legendary Royler Gracie. A the time, he was following into the footsteps of his older brother Saulo, already a well-established competitor. In 2001, Xande Ribeiro got his black belt from Royler and Saulo. Since then, the super heavyweight has won just about everything there is. He has 7 World titles in the Gi, a double No-Gi title, two ADCC titles and 4 Pans championships to name just a few of his major accomplishments! Unfortunately, he withdrew from the 2019 ADCC due to an injury.

That said, the brothers also run their highly successful Ribeiro JIu-Jitsu academy. They are also behind one of the best old-school instructional series so far, The University Of Jiu-Jitsu. This is something

most of us have seen and learned from. Now, however, Cande takes it a whole step further. As much as the University of Jiu-jitsu was basic, his new instructional is downright magical! The Diamond Concept OF Defense is one of those invisible Jiu-JItsu instructionals that’ll teach you unbeatable tactics that are deeply rooted in the bare basics of BJJ.

Xande Ribeiro: Diamond Concept Of Defense DVD Review

The “Diamond Concept OF Defense” is a Xande Ribeiro DVD that has four-volume to it. Each volume covers a different aspect of the system, all in a very precise order. Moreover, there are highly innovative concepts in there, that are all guaranteed to work. Why? Because they’re all about the fundamentals, and because it is Xande Riebiere teaching them. That’s why. IN fact, this entire DVD set is one that’ll revolutionize the way you see JIu-Jitsu. And particularly defense. Her,e you’ll learn the ins and outs of positional, defense, transitional defense, and even detailed submission defense. And it all works from a position zero of sorts that his the “Diamond Concept Of Defense”.

The first part of this instructional coves the “Superhold defense” concept which is basically a supercharged guard retention system. Part two goes into some common guard defenses, and ways to easily remain in control. Disc three is where the Diamond concept appears first after the previous two parts set the stage. Finally, in the last volume, Xnade goes deep, offering not only a complete escape system but also ways to train and drill everything he teaches. Of course, we wouldn’t expect anything less from a man of his grappling experience.

1 – The Superhold Defense

When it comes to the Superhold concept, you’re bound to be taken by surprise. I know I was, and I think that I still can’t recover. This is one of those ”facepalm” moments when you think “How come I’ve never thought of this”? Well, Xande not only has but he also has a complete system that he can effectively teach.

The Superhold concept is basically a foolproof way of making sure your hips never get pinned. It works from a knee shield and rests mainly in the hip switch motion we all love to do. Let’s remember that Xande Ribeiro is notorious for his guard passing skills. Conversely, this is also precisely what makes him so great at preventing passes. Thre’s some Esgrima pass defense thrown in there that I think nobody has thought of before. It is all very simple elegant and extremely easy to implement. A real much-welcomed bonus is a chapter on dealing with shoulder pressure.

2 – Cross Knee And Knee Drive Defenses

Xande Ribeiro Diamond Concept Of DefenseThis is a volume that most people that pick this up will find to be the most useful. Here, Xande Ribeiro covers tactics that help you deal with half guard, and particularly the knee slide passes. Whether an opponent chooses to knee drive across or slice straight through the middle, the “Diamond Concept Of Defense” offers solutions. Moreover, there are options for everything, from the near side to far side passes, both with or without pressure. The best part is that they all work off of the same position and the same basic concept.

A real treat is the blade drill, something that’s essential when it comes to defending the cross knee pass. In the ultimate chapter of this volume. Ribeiro also covers a Torrean pass defense, one which actually doesn’t require you to move at all. Real grappling sorcery!

3 – The Diamond Concept Of Defense

Her’s where things really heat up in this Xande Riberio DVD. Namely, in volume three, the Diamond Concept OF Defense finally takes shape. The reason Xande Ribeiro waited so long, si that this ties in with ball the above concepts, like Superholds and knee cut defenses. It all begins with Kesa Gatame and the reverse Kesa Gatame. The switch between these positions is often really difficult to deal with. Well, the Diamond concept take care of that, once and for all. In fact, according to it, you’\re not just safe from attacks, but also become uncontrollable to your opponent, and all the while you’re only making minor adjustments!

Out of all the volumes in this DVD, this one is the most concept originated one. This is also the one you really need to focus on and understand completely. There’s lots of talk here about frames and diamonds, as well as other principles. A great example is a concept of elongating for protection. Another great one, which I find particularly useful is the spur shield.

4 – Putting Everything Together

In the fourth and final volume of the Diamond Concept Of Defense, everything Xande Ribeiro demonstrated so far starts to click together. This is actually the volume where the entire Diamond game comes together. First up are a few more concepts to help you solidify your defensive position even more. Next up, it is time to chain together the Diamond and the Superhold in order to break out of literally any BJJ bad spot.

Also, a really important part of this DVD and the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu philosophy, in general, are drills. Here you get to learn real basics like hip escapes and elbow props. However, now they’ll make much more sense since they’re now a part of the larger “Diamond Concept Of Defense”. What’s best is that you can use them to keep getting better at the concept, even if you find yourself without a partner.

Conclusion

Let’s be completely honest, we never expect anything less than a real gem of a DVD when it comes toa a Xande Riberio DVD. Given that he always goes 100 %, whether it is fighting or te4aching, we got just that. And then some! The Diamond Concept Of Defense is revolutionary, easy to implement and insanely effective! It doesn’t matter who is trying to pass you, if you drill it long enough you’ll probably be able to stop Xande himself! Well, okay, not Xande, or Saulo, but certainly everyone else.

Tarikoplata DVD By Tarik Hopstock – A Review

A Complete Review Of The Tarikoplata DVD by Tarick Hopstock

just a short while ago, one move became a real hit when it comes to new, cruel and unusual BJJ submissions. The Tarikoplata is a nasty armlock that caught many of the highest level grapplers by surprise. As such, it is tried and tested in competition, with a stellar record to show for it. However, people attempting to figure it out came up short. The reason behind it is that the founder Tarik Hopstock kept the secrets of his best weapon to himself. He did a few seminars here and there, perhaps the odd YouTube video, but nothing that revealed the entire Tarikoplata system. Until now. Now, the Tarikoplata DVD instructional is here, and Tarik spares absolutely nothing. This raises the question, though, what has he got up his sleeve next?

Until such time that we see what Tarik Hopstock has ready for us next, we can certainly enjoy the Tarikoplata DVD. The Norweigan brown belt is certainly an interesting character, on top of being a scary opponent to meet on the mats. Tarik has been competing every chance he gets, and many of his numerous submission wins are down to his signature patented move – the Tarikoplata. As the name suggests this is a modification of the Kimura, which means it is a shoulder lock. However, instead of just going for one move, Tarik did a system based around it and has the ability to set it up from anywhere. And now, you can too!

Tarick Hopstock And The Tarikoplata Revolution

At brown belt, Tarik is already the nightmare for many black belts out there. That only means that by the time he reaches black belt (which his not too far away) he will be a  real force to be reckoned with. He is an example of “fresh blood” of the highest level that’s bound to change the game forever. In fact, he already has made a more than significant impact on Jiu-Jitsu, His signature submission hold, the Tarikoplata, took the world, and many of his opponents by surprise. It also made lots of people attempt to recreate it, something that didn’t turn out too successful even for black belts.

Tarikoplata DVD Tarick Hopstock InstructionalThe 23-year-old Norwegian grappler, training out of Frontline Academy in Oslo. He is a brown belt under Eduardo Rios, of the Carlson Gracie lineage. So far, Tarik Hopstock has competed in pretty much every major European competition, winning most of them in impressive fashion. Some of his accolades include Gi and  No-Gi European titles, as well as a Copa Podio Brown belt champion, as well as a bronze medal at the 2016 Worlds. However, with 62 submission wins out of 73 won matches, he certainly is an attractive and effective grappler. Moreover, he certainly qualifies as high-level, even before becoming a black belt. Conversely, he only has half a dozen losses, with just 1 by submission.

Hopstock started training BJJ in 2011. He loves to compete and is a calm and very methodical competitor. He is a guard player that particularly enjoys hunting for submissions. This submission fascination of his culminates with the Tarikoplata, a signature armlock that he developed to perfection. In fact, it is so effective that this Tarikoplata DVD by Hopstock himself is bound to run out of stock very soon!

The Tarikoplata DVD by Tarik Hopstock: Complete Review

The Tarikoplata is certainly a move you need in your arsenal. Yes, it works in both Gi and No-Gi. And yes, it is legal to perform at any level, under any ruleset out there. The submission itself is not a complicated one, which is exactly what makes it effective. It is an innovative way of executing an armlock that is proven to work at the highest levels of the sport. Not to mention that this is a move that Tarik is still going to polish and evolve. So far, the Tarikoplata DVD is only the first step in the development of a brand new submission hold.

A real BJJ up-and-comer, Tarik has submitted all kinds of grapplers, even those bigger and more experienced than him. Furthermore, he uses the Tarikplata from both top and bottom, even though he favors guard setups more. The Tarikoplata DVD is going to provide you with a detailed explanation of everything Tarik has to offer on the subject of his signature submission so far. In it, you will learn the ins and out of the Tarikoplata, from basic mechanics to crazy setups. Given that even black belts go to Tarik to learn, this is a unique opportunity to learn from the best person for the job – the founder of the submission.

The instructional, lasting at around 40 minutes has a clear cut progression organization. Opening the account with basics, Tarik Hopstock and everyone’s favorite uke, Placido, go over every possible application of the Tarikoplata step by step. They even offer some troubleshooting and live rolling near the end.

Tarikoplata Setups And Entires

Tarick Hopstock Tarikoplata DVD Review In the first half of the Tarikoplata DVD, Tarik Hopstock goes over a short intro before going into the submission itself straight away. First up is a setup from the top position Kimura. More specifically it is a North-South Kimura that offers the easiest setups. Tarik uses the threat of Kimura to explain how the Tarikoplata works in great detail. He also uses it to show setups without any resistance from an opponent. In fact, this is exactly where Tarik offers key details on finishing the submission without hitting snags.

Progressing from the finish, Tarik uses the remaining 7 chapters in this portion of the instructional focus on different ways to finish the submission. Rolling finishes are first, offering you options both forwards and backward. There’s also a very slick double under entry which is certain to have you tapping everyone in no-time. The knee shield entry is one of my favorite ones, followed by a sleeve and collar entry. Finally, the very famous S-mount Tarikoplata wraps up the first half of this amazing new instructional.

Different Options And Troubleshooting

In the second portion of the instructional Tarik Hopstocjk offers some amazing options in regard to hunting for theTarikoplata. Once again, the top Kimura is the starting point. However, this time, options go in different directions. In fact, all the position covered before: the knee shield, double under, etc get further attacking options in this section. Also really important is the top position Tarikoplata. A highly interesting chapter is the one on the differences between this submission and the Barataplata, which many fail to see. Actually, Tarik offers a great way to integrate both attacks into one highly effective gameplan.

Wrapping the entire Tarikoplata DVD up is a large section on troubleshooting, again covering a multitude of positions. In fact, he offers clear answers to just about every FAQ you might have. Ending the instructional in style, Hopstock rolls live with Placido, demonstrating how the different Tarikolata setups and finishes work.

In Summary

The Tarikoplata DVD by Tarik Hopstock is short, sweet and to the point. It is a key instructional for every competitor out there. Even if you do not plan on using the Tarikoplata, you should learn how it works so you don’t get caught with it. The fact remains that this is one move that’s here to stay. Moreover, it is still going to develop and evolve, particularly when Tarik gets his black belt. And we can’t wait to see which direction this move takes us to!
