Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions – Eli Knight DVD

Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions - Eli Knight DVD

Jiu-JItsu Based Self-Defense might sound like something unreal nowadays. The trouble with sports JIu-JItsu is that it is a sport, and it doesn’t really prepare people for violent altercations. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of old, the stuff the Gracie’s though, was actually much more self-defense originated. It was developed mainly for Vale Tudo needs back when this style of fighting was very popular in BVrazil. However, Jiu-Jitsu, still to this day, remains a viable self-defense tool. In fact, some would argue it is the most reliable one available to use. Now, there’s a brand new, and a bit unusual BJJ DVD out, tackling this exact subject. The man behind it, Eli Knight  Is equally as intriguing as his 8-part instructional.

We’re used by now to different formats of BJJ DVD instructionals. Anything from your usual DVD full fo techniques, Through 4 part instructionals containing entire systems to 8 or more part ones that pretty much cover entire grappling philosophies. Eli Knight brings us one of these latter type instructional in his “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” DVD. It is long, it is practical and it is entirely Jiu-Jitsu based. Will it work though? After all, we can train all the stuff Knight demonstrates, but can we ever really test them outside of MMA or real self-defense scenarios? As far as I can tell, everything on this DVD seems more than legitimate. Check out the full review!

BJJ And Realistic Self-Defense

As we know, BJJ wasn’t always a game of butt scooting to advantage victories. At a certain point in time, it was actually the most efficient defensive martial art in existence. Outside of military-style combat arts, of course. Back in the days of the first few UFCs, Royce Gracie demonstrated exactly how effective JIu-JItsu can be. He beat everyone that stood opposite him, regardless of martial arts experience, or size, for that matter. Moreover, he did not go through everything unscathed. He got punched, thrown, bitten, you name it. That just shows that even in situations where everything is a go, BJJ can prevail.

Eli Knight DVD Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense SolutionsThe only problem nowadays is not that BJJ has gone soft. It is only a rare few that focus on practicing these important aspects of the Gentle Art. Rickson, and pretty much every one of the Gracie family still carries on the tradition of practicing real self-defense. Gracie Barra has some stuff in their program, but it doesn’t make much sense. IN fact, I doubt anyone rally practices proper JIu-Jitsu based self-defense training, apart from perhaps those preparing for Combat Jiu-Jitsu. I’m not going to try and make the case to return Jiu-JItsu self-defense to every school out there. However, there should be a “branch” within the sport that covers this aspect. It would be a real waste to let the true spirit of JIu-Jitsu fade away, Particular when it is so effective as a self-defense system under a multitude of conditions. Just as Eli knight.

Eli Knight – A Self Defense Specialist

I did not mention Royce Gracie earlier in this article by accident. Royce is the man that awarder Eli Knight his black belt in BJJ. You can see how Knight’s pedigree is airtight right form the get-go. He is not only a very legitimate Jiu-Jitsu black belt but also truly experienced in the real self-defense aspects of it. Training with Royce for years would do that to you.

Eli Knight is another one of those people who spent their entire life in martial arts. And, just like many of them, he only found JIu-Jitsu to fulfill his requirements. He is a highly technical grappler, one who really enjoys training and teaching JIu-Jitsu based self-defense. Eli’s take si that proper movement is key to victory, whether it is on the mats, in the cage or on the streets. He is a highly knowledgeable and passionate BJJ instructor that also happens to teach an aspect of BJJ most of us have forgotten about.

Review: “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” DVD Instructional

So, what can you expect from the “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” DVD? To tell you the truth, I probably would have ignored it, if it wasn’t for the fact that this is an 8-part instructional. The length caught my eye, and I ha to go through it, I can safely say, that there are not many martial arts DVDs like this one out there. Having seen a whole lot of both BJJ and Krav Maga DVDs, I can definitely make this claim. This Eli Knight instructional is the real deal. It won’t teach you Jiu-Jitsu, but it will teach you how to use Ji-Jitsu to stay safe in any situation.

The organization of the instructional is done in accordance with the Brazilian Jiu-JItsu positions. To that extent, the DVD set starts with mount and side control solutions in the very first volume. Part two goes on to cover headlocks and ways to utilize guard passing in a street fight. Knee on belly and top positions, like side control and mount, follow in parts three and four of the instructional. There’s even an entire volume dedicated to a highly controversial subject – th closed guar’ ds effectiveness in real-life self-defense scenarios. Furthermore, Eli Knight covers open guards as well, before switching to standing and key grab defenses. The very final volume of the “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” instructional is all about the clinch, with lots of attention dedicated to this particular subject.

  • Part 1 – Safe On Bottom

Kicking this Eli Knight DVD off is a portion on what to do when you find yourself on your back. Even in sport Jiu-Jitsu, being on the bottom of mount or side control is a difficult problem to solve. If you introduce striking and a total lack of rules the issue only gets more complicated. Now, imagine that you’re actually fighting someone who also knows grappling. Well, “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” assumes just that, and offers all the best answers.

First up, you get to learn three key ways of quickly getting out of the mount. Those include some basic movements like the Trap & Roll, Shrimp, and an easy but efficient elbow escape. They all work, both in sports and self-defense settings. Plus, they’re quick enough to keep you from receiving too much damage.

The final portion of this volume covers the side control bottom and different ways to stay safe and get out. Push escape options are first, followed by head wrap control and reversals. A few movement drills wrap it all up

  • Part 2 – Headlocks And Passing

The headlock is arguably the most common street-fighting position there is. Just as the statistics state that most fights hit the ground at some point, you can bet that a headlock will pop up as well. There’s a really cool concept of escaping that Eli Knight shows her, called the uphill escape. It is not just perfect for self-defense, but grappling in general. Thre’s also a different way to escape – by punching yourself out of a headlock. It is all highly technical though and rounded off with a trapped arm escape to give you even more options

IN terms of guard passing, this is an innovative concept, to say the least. However, getting past an opponent’s legs is even more important when there are upkicks involved. Well, Eli offers great ideas on how to utilize the knee cut and leg drag passes to get past any guard and in dominant top position.

  • Part 3 – Knee On Belly And Top Side Control

As you can see, the “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” progresses gradually, starting from the worst spots and going towards the best ones. That means that now that we got past the legs, it is time to take a look at to position strategies. While you might think this comes naturally, you’d be surprised how hard it can be to attain and stay in top position in a street-fight scenario. Knee on belly is up first, and the options are not unknown to grapplers. Eli Knight offers real effective self-defense tips, so no elbows or dumb stuff from knee on belly. Instead, you get armbar options on the near and far side, as well as a Kimura. The goal is total control, with the option of causing quick and debilitating injuries if needed. Plus, there’s a neat little movement drill that’ll ensure you stay in position.

AS opposed to sport BJJ, Eli goes to knee on belly before he covers top side control. Understandable, as he is not after points, but rather safety and quick resolutions. Options here range from Americanas, trough arm crushing toa submission-based scarf hold system that’s unbeatable.

  • Part 4 – Attacking From Mount

The reason the mount brings the most points in Jiu-Jitsu is that it is the most dominant position to attack from. And by attacks, that means strikes in addition to submissions. Staying true to his style so far, Eli Knight keeps things technical and extremely JIu-JItsu based. Instead of trying to knock someone out from the mount, you get to learn control and some neat submissions. Ther are arm triangle and armlock attacks that are based on transitions, meaning you have a huge element of surprise. There’s also a great chapter on the S-mount that I ’ve actually found very useful for regular BJJ training.

Finally, marking the halfway point of the “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” DVD is a two-chapter section nn the gift wrap. This is one of Rickson’s favorite mount variations, and Knight demonstrates exactly why this is. Plus, the position connects the mount an back positions perfectly.

  • Part 5 – Solving The Closed Guard

This volume really intrigued me very much. Using the closed guard in a self- defense scenario is often a very polarizing subject in BJJ. yes it was extremely effective in MMA, but a real fight is a bit different. Particularly with multiple opponents. Well, Eli Knight certainly offers solutions in his instructional.

The volume begins with general closed guard concepts in terms of self-defense. The focus here is on what is effective and will get you to safety fast. And the best route to safety are sweeps. Elevation, pendulum, hip bump, and scissor are the quartet that will ensure your success. Of course, there’s an armbar in there, along with a smooth Kimura setup. A guillotine finish is the cherry on top but not before addressing some more controversy. People often say arm triangles form the closed guard don’t work. Well, the one Knight demonstrates in “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” does, and it does os in both sport and self-defense settings.

  • Part 6 – Open Guards In Self-Defense

Another thing I’d really be wary of is using an open guard in a street fight. Or I was until I saw Knight’s take on it. He really does offer things that make sense. Of course, the same primary goal remains – get on top, and get there quick. How? By using an innovative modified guard method by Eli Knight – the Pyramid guard. Options include triangles, Omoplatas and a bunch of sweeps, all from a position of great safety.

The best part about this concept is that it is really geared towards effective sweeps, like the tripod and technical stand-ups rather than retaining guard. This is different to what we’re used in BJJ, but it is also the main reason these concepts actually might work in a self-defense situation.

  • Part 7 – Grab Defense From Standing

Every martial art, from Aikido to Karate has grab defenses as part of their curriculums. Most of them, if not almost all are complete nonsense. People do not grab and stand still. People grab and pull, push and/or strike. Luckily, Jiu-JItsu has ways of preparing you for this.

Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions - Eli KnightBear hugs from the front and rear are first up. However, unlike the Gracie self-defense stuff that’s funny, Eli’s take on getting out is much more reality-based. The ways out include grip breaking and some key movement based on instincts. Moreover, there are guillotine and rear-naked choke defenses here that we do not use in sport grappling. Wrapping up area couple more headlock defenses, although this time from a broken posture situation.

  • Part 8 – Clinch Work Masterclass

The very last volume of the “Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense Solutions” Eli Knight DVD is also the largest one in terms of content. Here, Eli covers clinching, which is a very underrated discipline in just about every martial art.

This is actually the most important part of self-defense training. A clinch is a way to shorten the distance and reduce threats while standing. At the same tie, you’re establishing dominance form the get-go. In fact, the opening concepts here cover sucker punches and various different types of clinches you can use. Moreover, he covers the safest ways of getting to the ground when there are no mats around. His preferred methods are body lock takedowns, small trips as well as hip throws.

What I really loved is the fact that he also offers a different path: 2-on-1 takedowns and arm drags. Moreover, the so-called clinch crackdown Is a real masterpiece that might just work in tournaments too. Lots of pummeling work marks the end of this awesome instructional, but not before a neat standing guillotine option to put people to sleep in an instant.

Summary

Picking up a Jiu-Jitsu Based Self-Defense DVD might not be high on most modern grapplers’ priority lists. However, this one should be in everyone’s collection. Eli Knight will teach you how to take your Jiu-Jitsu knowledge and use it to protect yourself and your loved ones. And yeah, you will get punched and hurt in the process, there’s no way around that. But that’s exactly what makes this instructional so realistic and ultimately, effective.

As a smaller framed grappler, I can attest that one of the most difficult tasks to achieve is actually passing someone’s guard. Yeah, being stuck on the bottom under a 100+ lbs heavier person is not fun. But trying to pass a lankier opponent (read: almost every opponent or training partner) can actually be exceedingly frustrating. Luckily, one of the toughest and meanest featherweight black belts out there, Bruno Frazatto ahs decided to ease this particular struggle us little guys have. The Bruno Frazatto DVD “Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia “ is an instructional the will make you a better guard passer. However, it won’t just teach you different passes. It’ll teach you how to pass against the strongest and biggest grapplers without having to spend all your energy in the process.

Bruno Frazatto – The Featherweight King

Known as a pretty private person, Frazatto is an Atos team member (at the moment) who has an incredibly technical game. Given his team affiliation, there’s no need to point out that he is an avid competitor. The Brazilian born champion was born in 18984 in Campana. He started grappling at 16 and proved to be a tough competitor from the early beginnings.

After a great competition run, particularly in the 2005 Mundials where he got bronze, he got promoted to black belt by his coach, the legendary Roberto Godoi. Since then, Frazato has gone on to win the Brazilian Nationals several times, the Pans, the Europeans, the Worlds, and ADCC trials. In other words, he has a championship title in each of the toughest, most prestigious competitions in the world of BJJ.

Bruno Frazatto DVD Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia isntructionalBefore becoming a part of the Atos team, Frazatto was competing under the banner of Godoi for quite a while. He even dabbled in MMA a bit, winning a pro fight on his debut. However, he decided Gi BJJ is going to be his sole focus in 2008 and he made a switch to Brazilian Top team. At the same time, he also trained at the Brasa academy in Rio Claro. Since 2013, Frazatto has been focusing solely on MMA, putting his BJJ career on hold.

However, he has been more than active when it comes to BJJ instructional. Famous for his guard, he has several titles explaining his bottom system. However, it is the Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia Bruno Frazatto DVD that’s the standout in his collection.

Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia Bruno Frazatto DVD Review

The Complete Guard passing Encyclopedia Bruno Frazatto DVD is one of the best organized passing DVDs in the world. Bruno’s level of technical skills is incredible, to say the least. Moreover, he is a proven competitor in both Gi, NO-Gi, and MMA. That means he has a wealth of experience that not many others can rep[licate. Not to mention that he has been a high-level black belt for nearly 15 years.

The instructional contains almost 50 different chapters, all fo them focusing on one task only – getting past your opponent’s legs. As far as approaches go, this Bruno Fraatto DVD is actually the perfect blend of different ones. Here, you’ll find both ways of passing the specific guards as well as how to use certain passes against all the different guards you’ll encounter. It is a system like no other, that goes over literally all possible guard variations. The closed, half and deep half guard are first, with some crazy detailed Torreando pass stuff following closely. A spider guard passing masterclass comes next before Bruno shares the ultimate blueprint for dealing with every De La Riva guard variation out there. Technically speaking, the sound is perfect and camera work is flawless. Bruno himself talks very clearly, and his teaching style is a detailed and patient one.

Closed Guard And Half Guard

Opening the account is some key advice on how to act when you’re stuck in the closed guard. Bruno likes to use only the most effective sequences to pass specific guards. In the case of the closed guard, what you’ll find in this Bruno Frazatto DVD is a journey into the world of the stack pass. According to Frazatto, the best way of dealing with the closed guard is stacking someone up. To that extent, he uses different methods of achieving his goal. Some of them include the long step, knee slide, double under, over-under and duck pass. You can find integral information on all in the first part of the Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia.

While on the subject of closed guard,s Bruno also covers the half guard as well. While his take on using the back step pass to neutralize the half guard is game-changing, it is his deep half solutions that are the real star. Good deep half guard players can make your life a living hell if you do not have a way of preventing them. Bruno’s take on it is to step over. In similar fashion to before, once he knows the direction he’s heading, he uses different passes to achieve his goal. IN the deep half guard passing section, those are the slide pass, step over and the Leozinho back take.

The Torreando Pass

The reason why I’m going to claim this is the best ever Torreando instructional is that it is a part of a complete system her. Instead of only teaching the Torreando pass, Frazatto covers ist as part of his entire system, giving it a much more precise perspective.

In this portion, he starts with executing the Torreando against a guard pull. For all you Gi competitors out there, particularly lighter weight ones, this is going to be huge. That said, the long step follow-up to a Torreando vs. guard pull is no less impressive if you ask me. Following suit is a different concept based on the Torreando – the throw by. Here it’s all about leg drags, and a bunch of different grips to make them ultra-effective. Something to keep an eye out for is the “drive the truck” pass, which is a Bruno Frazatto special.

Also featuring in this portion of the Bruno Frazatto DVD are a couple of easy butterfly guard passes, again based on the long step.

Passing Spider Guard

Bruno Frazatto DVD Complete Guard Passing EncyclopediaWhen I picked the Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia instructional up this was the portion I was particularly looking forward to. I was not disappointed at all. The spider guard is extremely difficult to pass against a high-level spider guard player. That holds true for everyone. Now imagine that every training partner is larger and stronger than you and it becomes nearly impossible. Well, Bruno doesn’t think so.

Frazatto ahs four different ways of rendering the spider guard useless and passing the legs. The first example is by using a leg drag to achieve a throw-by pass. There’s also a step over method in there, based on the top-spin, as well as a collar sleeve leg drag. However, the most impressive portion in this Bruno Frazatto DVD has to be The forced inversion spider guard passing system. Here, Bruno forces the opponent to invert, however, ina manner that doesn’t allow them to establish an inverted guard. Rather, it opens up leg drags and leg traps that get you past the guard with ease. Finally, a lasso hook long step pass covers the last aspect of spider guard passing.

Dealing With De La Riva Guards

The final portion of the Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia Bruno Frazatto DVD is the portion on De lA Riva guards. Between the regular and Reverse De La Riva there are 20 chapters covering different ways to pass.

Half fo those chapters are all about the De La Riva Guard. Passing goes in three different directions: Long step, leg weave and pants grips. In the long step portion, the leg drag and long sep are all that you need to completely shut down the DLR. The leg weave option is my personal favorite offering some amazing control while you effortlessly long step or leg drag past the legs. Finally, a solid pants grip, Bruno Frazatto style is going to offer you great ways of preventing Berimbolos, while passing at will via a Torreando or knee slide.

IN the Reverse De La Riva portion, Bruno actually offers 8 different ways of passing, some of which are brand new. One example is the crazy dog system as well as the leg circle sequence. The leg shelf pass is out of this world and the crazy dog makes yet another appearance, this time against the knee shield. Capping it all off are a couple of awesome drills to keep your technique crisp and your movements flowing.

Closing Thoughts

There’s no doubt that Bruno Frazatto is one of the top featherweight competitors out there. Accordingly, the Complete Guard Passing Encyclopedia Bruno Frazatto DVD is one of the best instructionals on the subject out there. It has so much information inside that you’d be hard-pressed to find a guard you can’t pass after getting through it all.

Frazatto is one of the most entertaining grapplers out there. He is a pretty private person and not much is known about him. What we know, though is that when he sets his mind on something, he is unstoppable. SO, when Frazatto decides to put together an Impassable Guard Formula DVD, you can bet he does just that. This instructional is unlike other guard retention or simple guard DVDs. It is very very basic, providing you with ultra-simple and unstoppable ways of retaining, and even recovering your guard. It is arguably, one of the most technical BJJ DVDs ever released, particularly in relation to the open guard.

Small Guys And Open Guards

There’s a special relationship between smaller grapplers and open guards. Whether it is a feather and rooster weight males, or pretty much any females bar heavyweights, the open guard seems to be the go-to starting spot. However, working form open guards is not what is actually impressive about the smaller grapplers. It is how they manage to retain the guards and transition between different ones that really merits attention. Considering it is no easy to do so against people of your own size, let alone skilled, larger and often more experienced opponents, it takes a lot of clean technique to pull this off.

Bruno frazatto Impassable guard formulaOne of the most technical grapplers out there is hands down Bruno Frazatto. He is a Brazilian born grappler who has been a black belt under Roberto Godi for the better part of 15 years. During the time, Frazatto proved he is a highly motivated and focused individual. Until 2013, he was dedicated solely to Gi Jiu-JItsu, and since, he has been pursuing a professional MMA career. That said, he brings the same focus and dedication to any instructional that he produces. And, The Impassable Guard Formula DVD is his finest one yet, without a doubt.

Bruno’s take on the open guard is a simple one. HE is notorious for his guard game, on that brought him numerous World, European, Pans, and Brazilian Nationals titles. When on the bottom, Frazatto is keen on basic BJJ movements to ensure he stays in guard. In fact, he doe not like to even think about attacking from guard until he is completely safe. That means rendering any passing attempt opponent launch completely powerless. Now, his open guard retention formula is available for everyone to learn.

The Bruno Frazatto Impassable Guard Formula DVD Review

What exactly is “the IMapssable Guard Formula DVD” by Bruno Frazatto? Which guard dopes it cover? Is it an instructional om attacking or defending? Let’s start at the beginning, this is a DVD that is going to teach you how you should hold any open guard out there. In the sense of attack and defense, this is a neutral instructional – you can do both at will. However, the focus here is on how to stay in the guard for as long as you want, without ever risking giving away a pass.

The instructional itself has a very meticulous organization. It contains no less than 50 chapters all fo them addressing specific aspects of the formula. Moreover, there’s a further division into sections. The best part about the instructional si that it covers movement, tactics, and strategies more than it does specific techniques. Even better, it contains a ton of drills to help you really perfect it all. Afte4r all, as an Atos Academy team member, Frazatto is very big on doing lots and lots of drills. In fact, quite a large chunk of this instructional is dedicated to some key partner drills that will help you develop world champion level, open guard.

Also among the sections is a huge one on fundamental’s, where Frazatto covers different movements and how you can apply them in different scenarios. There’s also a portion on guard recovery, where Bruno goes over half guard, knee shied, collar sleeve and De La Riva.

Oh, and did I mention there were drills inside?

Fundamentals

The Impassable Guard Formula DVD begins with a detailed overview of the fundamentals of guard retention. First up are shrimping drills and some key details about how you should actually use shrimping motions. Following suite are inversions, as a continuation of shrimping. Some butterfly guard drills come next before Bruno demonstrates the first of many partner drills.

As far as fundamentals go, there’ also a neat little section on hip frames that’s located after all the partner drills. However, this is actually a part of the fundamentals portion as it contains basic concepts. Namely, this is where Bruno Frazatto shares different ways of using hip frames to deal with some of BJJ’s most common passes. In this portion, he covers the Torreando, leg drag, and stack pass and how to prevent them with hip frames.

Drills

This is by far the largest section of this Bruno Frazatto instructional. There are 17 different partner drills that you need to master if you want to have an impassable guard. The drills are further broken down into clusters, each pertaining to a different pass. The first cluster covers the leg drag pass, and how you can spin, sit up and move to make sure this pass doesn’t work against your guard.

Bruno frazatto Impassable guard formula DVDNext up, Frazattoe goes into the Torreando and the different ways of countering it. Actually it never really gets to counters as all you’re doing is moving to render the pass useless. From ultra basic movements, all the way to spins and rolls and bringing them all together, here you truly get an Impassable Guard Formula. The stepover shrimp is one of my favorites, but there are lots of Granby roll in there too if you enjoy inversions.

The final cluster of the partner drills section is the one addressing the stack pass. This is where I learned the most from this instructional since I’ve never had much luck against this particular pass. Once again, basic movements first, then stuff like hip frame elbow push and leg pummels before a clear formula on tying everything together.

Guard Recovery

The final portion of this Bruno Frazatto DVD covers actual guard retention sequences and tactics. However, if you think you can skip right up to this portion, you’re wrong. You need to really master all the moves and drills that come before in order to really grasp what Frazatto shares next.

First up is the double under pas,s and how to recover from it. There are three different methods here. Those are the leg pummel, grip fighting and elbow sit up that combine in a neat little system. Similarly, but in more depth, Frazatto addresses the half guard too. There are two basic movements here, the knee push and hip switch which in turn offer different movement patterns to help you remain in guard.

Arguably the most important parts of the Impassable Guard Formula DVD are the ones on knee shield recovery and preventing the knee slide pass. In terms of the knee shield, the essentials are breaking control and retracting your knee as you go. When it comes to dealing with the knee slide, there are several further options. They will really help you solve this highly popular guard pass.

Finally, before Frazatto goes over som De La Riva guard essentials, he covers ways in which you can recover the collar sleeve guard. This simple Gi guard is one of the most effective out there. Moreover, Frazatto’s pummels, rolls and belt grabs are going to help you make it even better. Which brings us to defending the De La Riva both through playing with your hooks, and transitioning to X guard and back. At the tail end of this instructional are a few further drills, this time pertaining to the guard recovery techniques.

Dominyka Obelenyte "Spider Variations And Domoplata" DVD Review

At the highest levels of Brazilian JIu-Jitsu, a real joy to watch are the women’s divisions. The ladies of BJJ do put on some of the most exciting, teeth-grinding matchups, whether it is Gi or No-Gi. In fact, out of all the BJJ World champions, the ladies actually have the boasting rights when it comes to choosing the most technical grapplers. That is precisely why I really love learning from female BJJ instructors. The smaller, the better, as those are the most technical grapplers you’ll see. Plus, they innovate. A lot. Take Dominyka Obelenyte for example. She is a multiple-time BJJ world champion and is behind a mind-bending instructional called “Spider Variations And Domoplata”.

In the world of Gi JIu-Jitsu, you cant hardly do better than follow the instructions in the “Spider Variations And Domoplata” DVD by Dominyka Obelenyte. Apart from the fact that she is one of the best grapplers at the moment, the choice of techniques is extremely important. The spider guard is one of the most dominant bottom positions you can play in Gi Jiu-Jitsu. Moreover, it opens up a few classic submissions like armbars, triangles and Omoplatas in addition to plenty of sweeps. Well, Dominyka focuses on just one of these submissions, introducing some much-needed innovation. Namely, she turns the Omoplata into the Domoplata.

Dominyka Obelenyte’s World Class BJJ Game

Dominyka Obelenyte is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Marcelo Garcia. This fact alone makes her instructional worth your time and attention. Moreover, The Lithuanian born grappler is a multiple-time BJJ world champion at all belt levels apart from white. She is also a Pans and European champion at black, brown and purple. Safe to say, she competes a lot and does it at the highest levels of the sport. IN fact, she is one of the youngest world champions to win an adult division ever, at the age of only 14 (at the blue belt).

Dominyka Obelenyte "Spider Variations And Domoplata" DVDThe Alliance Jiu-Jitsu competitor is currently 24 years old. She is a black belt since early 2015. Since then, Dominyka has switched teams, leaving Marcelo’s for Fábio Clemente’s academy, due to personal reasons. Obelenyte was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, but emigrated to the US at the age of 6. A year after, she enrolled ina traditional Japanese Jiu-JItsu classes. Later on, after moving again she took up taekwondo, which eventually led her to discover BJJ at the age of 9. Shea started under the Gracie HUmaita banner at Luis Vintaloro’sacademy. Following Emily Kwok, Dominyka later moved to Marcelo’s and stayed with the legend until 2016, getting her black belt in the process.

Apart from being extremely successful with the spider guard and particularly the Omoplata, Obelenyte’s des more than just train and compete. Obviously, there is her Spider Variations And Domoplata DVD which is a real high-level instructional and a testament to her legacy. But, she is also an avid activist for equal pay between men and women in the sport, something she’s been pursuing since 2015. Obelenyte’s black belt record is currently 20 wins (8 of which by submission) and only one solitary loss.

“Spider Variations And Domoplata” Dominyka Obelenyte  DVD Review

From an organizational standpoint, this Domynika Oblenyte DVD instructional is a simple one. She is one of the top competitors of her time and uses this digital platform to teach you a very specific BJJ game. Namely what she teaches is nothing but the highest percentage techniques that will work even against elite opponents. While her spider guard system works perfectly for anyone, smaller grapplers, and particularly female grapplers with a similar build to Dominyka are going to benefit the most. If you’re looking for a bottom game that has guaranteed sweep and submission options without having to figure out complex ways of integrating them to your own game, this is instructional for you.

Dominyka Obelenyte "Spider Variations And Domoplata"In fact, apart from the level of the technical quality of the “Spider Variations And Domoplata” instructional, the main value of this DVD lies in it’s value to competitors. Especially those that favor the Gi. The instructional is organized into two main sections, both addressing different aspects of Dominyka’s game. The first half of the instructional covers the spider guard, without going into unneeded details. Nothing but the key aspects of the spider guard in terms of competition success. To that extent, the first portion is all about control and sweeps. Many, many sweeps. All fo the sweeps are ultra high-percentage and Obelenyte offers som key insider details too. The second portion covers her signature submission move – the DOmoplata.

Sweeping from the spider guard

The first part of the Spider Variations And Domoplata” DVD by Dominyka Obelenyte is al about reversing position. After all, this is a competition-oriented instructional. That means that the first task is to actually get the top position and acquire as many points as you can first. Going for “riskier” moves like direct submissions is also an option, just not the first one. A very smart approach by Dominyka, if I may say so.

Some basics of the spider guard are actually covered in the first chapter that goes over a basic spider guard weep. That way, Dominyka wastes no time at all. The sweeping portion of the DVD uses a natural progression involving spider guard variations and different high-percentage sweeps. The basic one opens up a Single Leg X sweep, which in turn, provides further options. Thos come in the form of the Baloon and leg trap sweep. Sticking to simplicity and effectiveness, the balloon sweep also features from the De La Riva/spider guard hybrid, ensuring you get the top position. A shin-to-shin spider guard triangle setup announces what you can expect in the second portion of the DVD.

The Domoplata

Dominyka Obelenyte - Spider Variations And DomoplataPart two of this short and sweet BJJ Instructional looks at submissions. In fact, it looks at just one submission – the Omoplata. To that extent, it is not even the Omoplata you know. This is a variation that Dominyka has come up by herself. It is far more devastating and enormously harder to escape than the regular Omoplata. The so-called Domoplata is a true gift for any submission savvy competitor out there. Particularly those who already enjoy attacking with Omoplata variations.

The Domoplata, as the opening chapter explains, supercharges the regular Omoplata by involving the free arm in the submission as well. In fact, it is something like a crucifix Omoplata, to an extent. The best part is that it is easier to set up, there’s no rolling escape and it works really well. Plus you can look for it form different positions, including the mount. Wrapping up this 30-minute instructional is another gem from Obelenyte. This time it is the ‘Coat Hanger Of Destruction” which is something

Closing Thoughts

If I need to use one word to describe this instructional, I would be “efficient’. In just under half an hour, Dominyka Obelenyte will change your bottom game for good. Even if you are not a fan of the spider guard, you’ll benefit immensely from this instructional. If nothing else, you’ll add the brutal Domoplata to your arsenal to ensure you get taps left and right.

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu While Constantly Traveling

How to Keep Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu While Traveling

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is something you can’t just leave at home when you go traveling. Whether it is for a vacation, business trip or any other trip, grapplers can rarely go a few days without looking to train. Luckily, JIu-JItsu si so spread around the world that you can find an academy at pretty much every spot you go to. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can always get to it. OR that there is always one that will suit you, for that matter. In order to get your fix of BJJ, you might want to consider giving some other options ago as well. As long as you plan it all right, you will still be able to train no matter which destination you’re traveling to.

Whenver your traveling, whether it is work or leisure, you’ll have a certain schedule. Unless you really make time in your schedule to actually train, you probably won’t get yourself to an academy. Moreover, you need to make sure you’re actually scheduling to train when there’s a class. Moreover, do a bit of research, Make sure you know all the academies in the vicinity and choose one that’s to your liking. Remember that training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the road is never going to be like home. You won’t know the people, there’ll no teammates around and you won’t be on home turf. Moreover, sometimes, you won’t eve be able to find a suitable academy to train at. Or any academy at all!

Go With The Flow

First up, when you know you have to travel a lot, you need to understand that you won’t always have the time and opportunity to train. However, if it just so happens that something pops up, be ready to go with the flow. Having a Gi around at all times is not the easiest thing to pull off. However, there’s no way you can’t fit a pair of shorts and rashguard with you whenever you’re traveling. That way, you’re ready to jump in at any opportunity you get. IN fact, training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while traveling is actually a big part of the BJJ culture.

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu On The RoadNowadays, there’s even a word for it: “traincation”. People often decide to go somewhere on a vacation where they can actually train. And by train, I mean train a lot. Imagine, for example, booking a trip to NYC for your time off. If you’re a BJJ nut like me, that means spending hours in Renzo Gracie’s gym and/or Marcelo Garcia’s academy. Traveling to actually train more is what people in the JIu-JItsu community refer to as a “traincation”. Another “traincation” example is going for a BJJ cruise or a multi-day camp run by some of the top BJJ instructors out there.

However, for those that actually travel for work, and do it often, a “traincation” is not really on their priority list. Sneaking the odd training session in is actually the most you can hope for. Sometimes, you might run into like-minded people (meaning every grappler alive)_ and you can sneak a drilling session or a short roll somewhere, Once again, go with the flow and try to get your fix outside of your schedule whenever you can. Apart from that, make sure you actually plan to train while on the road.

Challenges Of Training Brazilian Jiu-JItsu On The Road

Whenever you’re on the road, you’re faced with a few common challenges when it comes to training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Getting away to train means having to dedicate at least an hour and a half for the class/open mat, plus commuting time. For people working a lot, this might prove to be difficult on a regular basis. There’s also the choice of a gym. Sometimes, you’re left with options you don’t really like. For example, going to a notoriously tough gym when you’re just a recreational grappler might leave you, err, bruised and battered which might not be the best outcome when you’re actually working on your trip.

Let’s look at a couple of options you might face on your travels, and what to do. First up, the best-case scenario. Let’s say you made a plan to visit a certain academy. You contacted the instructors beforehand, telling them your coming (a sing of proper BJJ etiquette, by the way). There’s no drop-in fee or a really small lone, meaning you don’t have to worry too much about the finances. Moreover, it is an academy with a great instructor and it offers Gis to rent for people coming in. Plus they’re easy to find. Spots like this are a grappler’s dream come true. However, they are not always available.

The worst-case scenario, of course, would be that there’s no BJJ academy near your location. Now imagine you’re stuck somewhere for a month or so. Having no access to Jiu-Jitsu can drive you crazy. In that case, traveling toa nearby spot that has BJ Jis your best bet. Just remember, you can’t really be icky with academies in such a case. There’s also another solution to the worst-case scenario which you may want to consider – training something other than out-and-out grappling.

Get the Most Out Of It

To be honest, training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the road often requires you to figure out a middle ground. It means that you’ll most likely have access to an academy but you won’t have many to choose from. That means you might run into a spot that doesn’t really fit your needs. However, it is an option to train, and you’ll have to take it. If you do, make sure to stay safe, do not force anything and stick to regular classes as opposed to open mat. That way you get to learn something new instead of just getting smashed. Oh, and tap a lot. Because everyone is going to want a piece of the visting guy/girl. No need to get injured.

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu While TravelingA key piece of advice I once got, and that I can now rally to you s to actually look for seminars rather than gyms. Regardless of where you’re traveling, you might just run into some of the top grapplers in the world giving a seminar. I’m not talking about going to 5-day camps like on “traincations”. Instead, if there’s a seminar you can attend, make sure it is your first option, rather than just visiting an academy. The same holds true for private lessons.

In the case that you can’t make ti to an academy, or there isn’t one, do not limit yourself to grappling. Most hotels often have gyms that have enough equipment to provides you with a challenging workout. And, even if you’re not really into lifting wight s or sprinting on a treadmill, simply do some solo BJJ drills! Or, if you’re really pressed for time or can’t get to a facility, consider doing hotel room workouts. Or, simply take your favorite BJ JDVDs with you and stay up to speed with BJJ theory!

Final Words

There’s no need to take a break from BJJ when you have to travel a lot. However, you also do not have to go training Brazilian Jiu-JItsu per se whenever you’re on the road. Sometimes, there’s just no way to train. Sometimes you can only train in the morning and there are no morning classes etc. Go with the flow and try to figure out different ways of getting your grappling fix. Remember that you don’t just have to participate, you can watch DVDs or go watch a live event if you happen to run into one. There are lots of ways to keep active in a grappling sense while on the road.

How Jiu-Jitsu Knee Pads Can Help Your BJJ

Jiu-Jitsu Knee pads for grappling

“If you train grappling form more than 3 years, and one day you wake up and nothing hurts than that means you’ve died.” This is one of the best quotes I’ve ever head in regards to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And the reason behind it is that It is completely, 100% true. Grappling is tough on the body, just like all combat sports and contact martial arts are. However, in BJJ, there’s a particular strain on the joint, some more than others. If there’s one joint that universally receives a lot of damage, it has to be the knee. Ligaments, menisci, muscle and tendon tears, abrasions, you name it. Even people with the healthiest knees risk developing issues if they spend enough time in BJJ. Luckily, there’s a simple solution that comes in the form of Jiu-Jitsu knee pads. All you need to do is actually consider wearing one (or a pair).

Jiu-Jitsu kee pads are different from your regular knee protection pads for many reasons. One is that we spend so much time on the ground grappling, that they need to cushion a lot more impact compared to others. Then, there’s the fact that thy need to be comfortable, and not prevent any movement in the leg. And these are just some of the criteria the best Jiu-Jitsu kneepads need to be able to fulfill. Luckily, nowadays, there are a lot of options in this department, and there are even levels to it, depending on your affliction. What’s most important, though, is you deciding to wear them – even if you do not think you really need them.

Knee Issues And Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a sport like no other for a multitude of reasons. It is fun, it is social, it tends to make people better overall persons. On the other hand, it is addicting, it creates BJJ nerd assains and it takes an inhuman toll on your body. And that’s provided you’re doing everything right.

Jiu-Jitsu Knee pads for grappling knee issuesThe knees are an all-important joint for us, and they’re pretty fragile as such. Well, ok, they’re perfect for day-to-day use, if you’re not in the habit of grappling. Throw in grappling martial arts, though, and you can be certain you’ll face one knee issue or another within a decade of you starting training. Yeah, it doesn’t have to be a major trauma, it can just be the wear and tear that gets you. However, Jiu-Jitsu as art is such, that it puts our knees under immense stress. Want one example? Taking the back of a turtled opponent. Do you know how some, particularly white/ blue belts simply pull you back to get to the back mount? Well, if your knees haven’t experienced this so far, you’ve been more than lucky.

Another example which is huge is takedowns, Yeah, that’s right, takedowns area far worse on your knees than leg locks. In fact, takedowns make up for the most serious knee issues in BJJ, at least statistically. In all honesty, out wearing JIu-Jitsu knee pads won’t’ protect you from major trauma. However, they will protect you from many common issues, as well as chronic inflammation and developing long-lasting issues like tendonitis, meniscus issues, and abrasions.

The Case For Jiu-Jitsu Kneepads

Why do you need Jiu-JItsu knee pads? Why, to protect your knees, of course. Joking aside knee pads really do serve multiple purposes when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Furthermore, they do come in different shapes, sizes and even models, which is something we’ll talk about later. For now, let’s see how Jiu-Jitsu knee pads can actually protect your knees so that you can grapple trouble and pain-free.

In terms of advantages, the first thing you get from a good pair of Jiu-Jitsu knee pads is direct protection. In that sense they act pretty much like a rashguard – they offer direct protection to the skin around the knees which is often very exposed, particularly without the Gi. Next up, there’s the all-important cushion that surrounds the patella. For those with patella tendon issues, this is a real lifesaver. And, if you do not want to develop such issue,s you should consider grabbing a pair of pads early on. After all, they cost next to nothing for what they provide in return.

Arguably the most important aspect of knee pads for BJJ is the compression. Good, tight-fitting knee pads provide compression and improve blood flow, making it easier to train full contact. Compression, paired with the strategic shock absorbers Jiu-Jitsu knee pads help prevent all the small but cumulative trauma we get on a daily basis. Moreover, thy improve blood flow and help keep the knees warm. This means it is easier to flush stuff out, and inflammation does not occur as often, or as much. And finally, there’s taking things to the very next level, including braces in your knee pads to help you recover from a major knee injury.

Taking Things To The Next Level

In terms of taking things to the next level, first up, see a doctor. Make sure you get a right diagnosis so that you can get a pair of Jiu-Jitsu knee pads to fit your particular needs. That said, before you go off shopping for the best BJJ Knee pads out there, which is something we can help with, you need to understand what types you have.

Jiu-Jitsu Knee pads - Can They Help Your BJJ?First up, you have your day-to-day BJJ knee pads. These are usually sleeve-type pads, most often made from Lycra/Spandex or Neoprene. They go above and below the knee joint, and always feature some sort of shock-absorbing cushion. Their goal is to provide direct mechanical protection for abrasions, some level of compression as well as shock absorption. All in all, perfect for minor knee issues, or simply as a precaution.

If you have more achy knees or require some customization, then knee wraps are a great option. similar to hand wraps for striking martial arts, knee wraps are nothing but long, specially designed pieces of gear you wrap around your knee joint. They’re extremely great to adjust and you can even wrap them in a way that provides targeted support. To that extent they offer more support and compression than direct shock absorption, so keep it in mind.

Finally, you have the heavy-duty knee braces. I’m not talking those medical-grade restrictive braces here. Actually, these are more of knee pads in a knee sleeve style containing some further supportive and protective elements. These may be specific ligament supports, torsion control, or meniscus cushions. There are actually great even if you’re nursing a high-grade knee injury.

Final Thoughts

In short, Jiu-Jitsu knee pads make training grappling easy for those with minimal knee problems, and possible for those with major ones. Whatever the case, I certainly wish I looked into these before I had to deal with knee injuries. So, instead of having to look at the heavy-duty stuff, grab yourself ap air of simple Jiu-Jitsu knee pads and keep rolling injury and pain-free!

Thomas Lisboa: “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD Review

Thomas Lisboa DVD: Closed Guard Beyond basics Full Review

What happened to the closed guard in Jiu-Jitsu? I remember way back when I did y first tournament. I got o the closed guard in every match, and managed to get a few victories thanks to it. However, from there on, the closed guard seems to have taken a back seat. Just like it did for me, the closed guard fell out of favor with most others. The reason was all the crazy open guards that still, to this day, keep on coming. However, I’m glad that there’s a kind of a revival now of old-school BJJ fundamentals. And the closed guard is making a comeback with a bang. Thre are plenty of instructionals nowadays that take al ook at the basics of the BJJ closed guar. But what comes next? Well, Thomas Lisboa has an idea, one that he shares in his  “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD.

Thomas Lisboa DVD: Closed Guard Beyond basics Full Review
Techniques List

Just a few months ago, I revisited the closed guard since I had to teach it as part of a class. However, I had to teach it to the advanced group, which meant I needed to refresh my knowledge in some of the more intricate aspects of it. This refresher course spiked my interest in the position, years after I was swearing by it on a daily basis. As it seems, people have been putting out crazy closed guard information. However, if you’re really looking at some of the more advanced options, then there’s only one title you need to be considering. “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” is not just another closed guard instructional. Tomas Lisboa has some crazy ways of moving past the fundamentals, so much so, that you’\ll fall in love with them at first glance!

Thomas Lisboa – The Featherweight King Of The Guard

Gi or No-Gi, you’re going to use the closed guard. When it comes to Gi Jiu-Jitsu, though, you definitely have way more options. All those lapel and sleeve grip combinations make for a hell of an attacking game if you can put one together. Once again, I’ll refer to an example I’ve used countless times – look at Roger Gracie. Nothing but the basics, lots of closed guard work, and a bunch of World Champion titles to show for it. Clearly, the closed guard, among other basics, works at the highest level. But what comes after the basics? Thomas Lisboa has the answer, although it is probably not what you think.

Lisboa is a  Brazilian, that was born in Sao Paolo in 1988. Form Karate and Capoeira, through Judo, he “graduated” to Jiu-Jitsu in his native Sao Paolo. He started at a local Alliance affiliate training with  Alex Monsalve and Daniel “Cabelo” Nogueira. They all traveled regularly to learn from Fabio Gurgel, who ended up awarding Thomas all fo his belts. In fact, after winning medals at the Mundials for years in a row, Gurgel promoted Lisboa to a black belt in 2012. Since then Thomas spent time with Marcelo Garcia, Michael Langhi and a bunch of other impressive grapplers. Suffice to say, it shows in his pedigree.

So far, Thomas has won numerous Rio, Florida, Belo-Horizonte and other championships. He also came in second at the No-Gi Worlds, as well as third at the Europeans and Pans. The energetic featherweight is extremely well known for his guard prowess, both from the open and closed variations. Now, in the “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD set, Thomas Lisboa shares some secrets that have gotten him through one of the toughest divisions in the world on multiple occasions!

Full Review: Thomas Lisboa: “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD Instructional

First of all, let’s manage expectations a little bit. When you read “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” you probably think you’re going to see never before seen flying, spinning and whatnot techniques from the closed guard. Well, you’re not.  Remember when I said that this DVD has stuff that actually works at a world championship level? When Thomas Lisboa says he goes beyond the basics, that means you get to learn those black belt secret moves that make or break the position. IN this case, think of it as fundamentals on steroids. This DVD is going to teach you how to do everything, the right way. More importantly, it’ll teach you how to be extremely efficient. Not to mention the number of unexpected attacks you’ll discover inside.

The instructional consists of four total volumes. The very first one cover guard pulling and some great sweeps and submissions. Basic stuff here, only taken a step further when it comes to the finer points. Part two stars some nasty stuff the likes of Gogoplatas and Brabo choke. Certainly upping the ante here. Part three goes into the secrets of highly advanced grip fighting, opening up craziness like the lumberjack sweeps and a bunch of open guard transitions. Finally, volume four covers submissions with a level of proficiency that’s you’ll have to see to believe. All in all, this is really an instructional that goes beyond the basics. However, the reason it is worth having is that it doesn’t wander into uncharted territory.

Part 1

The essentials are of course up first. Thomas Lisboa kicks things off with a few guard-pulling tips and tricks. Competitors, make sure you really digest this, as it’ll solve many tournament riddles for you. Apart from that, this is the fundamentals portion of the instructional. The chapters here include sweeps and submissions from the closed guard. And, while you think you know most of them, you definitely need to take a look at what Lisboa has to offer.

Thomas Lisboa Closed Guard Beyond basicsFirst up, forget about Roger Gracie’s cross choke. “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” offers not just one, but several variation n this brutal choke. Moreover, it is followed by an even nastier loop choke, making sure you get a tap. Or, more often, a nap. The scissor and pendulum sweep follow suite, dissected down to the bone. And, as if that wasn’t enough, you get armbars, kimuras and Omoplatas to round this volume off. Essentially, so far, you get a full instructional’s worth in just the first volume.

Part 2

Volume two should be even more impressive than the first one, right? Thomas Lisboa certainly thought so, as he starts things off with a Gogoplata, of all things. While you might consider this to be a low-percentage move, you need to stop and see this take on it. It is guaranteed to have people tapping in no time! And, while on the subject of submissions, Lisboa also covers guillotine, armbar and triangle options, just to make sure you have options. In fact, they all work as a closed system, covering just about every possible escape route.

Ther’s also a hugely important part of the closed guard game here. In fact, it may be the most important one. If you do not truly understand how to jump guard, you might end up injuring both yourself and your opponent. Lisboa not only dissects the guard jump but offers safe drills to make sure you practice live. And, this is all before “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” moves on to even more submissions. Featuring here ist he closed guard Gi Brabo system, a true title winner. Included in this section you’ll find a complete system, along with concepts and grip fighting details.

Part 3

Wait, there’s more! A lot more, in fact. Part three of this Thomas Lisboa instructional goes even deeper into the closed guard. Here, the focus is on some really high-level stuff. Yeah, the techniques might be fundamental, but the setups and execution is world-class level! A few sweep variations, like the knee inside and cross sleeve pendulum, are up first. The latter is a personal favorite of mine. However, that’s not the most impressive part of this volume.

There’s a section in it that covers a rarely-ventured area of the guard – the overhook closed guard. Submission options follow, as well as some more unorthodox sweeps, like the Roleta and Lumberjack sweep. The one chapter that’ll really come in handy to everyone is how to deal with the standing opening without leaving the closed guard. Oh, and the biceps armbar is also one to look out for!

Part 4

Thomas Lisboa DVD: Closed Guard Beyond basicsAs the “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD draws to a close, the focus is on submissions. Tp simplifies things, this is where you work out the kinks on all closed guard submissions. Learn the stuff Thomas LIsbnoa offers here, and you’ll have a black belt killer closed guard, guaranteed. Examples include Omoplata to armbar transitions, as well as some inverted armbar craziness. It’ll take me several more tries to get the hang of some of this stuff. Moreover, there are even more sweeps, some new, like the Baloon sweep, and some we’ already saw, like the Lumberjack.

In Summary

Thomas Lisboa is a likable and easy to listen to BJJ black belt. Plus he has tons of competition experience. The subject he is working on is one very popular at the moment., the fact that his “Closed Guard Beyond Basics” DVD instructional stands out from the crowd of full guard DVDs that are everywhere, speaks volumes of its quality. If you’re a white belt, you’ll find this useful. If you are. However, purple belts and beyond, don’t even think about competing without watching this instructional!

If you take a close look at grappling martial arts nowadays, you’ll see that there’s not one complete art out there. Jiu-Jitsu is as elaborate on the ground as they come, but it severely lacks in takedowns. Wrestling does have takedowns, and pins, but submissions are nowhere to be found. Judo, Sambo, Catch Wrestling, no matter the sport, there are flaws. That’s why combining grappling martial arts is a great way of weeding out weaknesses and creating an overall rounded game. In doing so, the Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling DVD is one resource that can open new perspectives for any grappler. Why? Because Adam Wheeler focuses on the fundamentals of America’s favorite grappling sport – collegiate wrestling. And he is just the man for the job!

Folkstyle Wrestling

Folkstyle wrestling is actually what most people know as colligate wrestling. It is mostly practiced in the USA, but it is not exclusive. SO, why do we call it folkstyle when we all know it as writing? Well, for those out there that are uninitiated, wrestling is far more diverse than just what you see at the college level. There’s Folkstyle, freestyle, Greco-Roman, the aforementioned Catch Wresltinga nd a bunch of other styles. And yes, they all have key differences between them.

Folkstyle wrestling, for example, is focused on pinning an opponent in order to get a win. If you can’t, that’s when points that you get by takedowns and attacking count. Even then, the number of points you get in Folkstyle, compared to other styles of wrestling is different. The best way to win is to throw someone down and hold them there for two seconds. That is what is considered a pin. However, you can also win by points, whether it is attacking (takedown attempts, near falls), defending (escapes and reversals), or technical superiority (tech-fall). In any case, Folkstyle Wrestling is fun and is one of the styles any grappler looking for w well-rounded game needs to train in. Particularly for those who are fans of No-Gi.

Adam Wheeler, Wrestler Extraordinaire

Speaking of Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling, the man behind it, Adam Wheeler, is an Olympic bronze medalist and one of the most technical American wrestlers of recent times. His medal came at the 2008 Summer Olympics. What is surprising is that Adam actually likes Greco-Roman more than Folkstyle. Still, that doesn’t mean he can teach both at the highest possible level. The Olympian is also a BJJ black belt.

Wheeler has a bunch of other accolades at the highest level of both Greco Roman and Folkstyle wrestling to go with his 2008 bronze medal. Moreover, he is also active in JIu-JItsu, although not a distinct competitor, at least so far. The California native started wrestling in high school, before really getting into it at college. He kept on to develop a stunning career, on that he is now continuing as a grappling coach. In fact, he is currently a SWAT officer and a Jiu-Jitsu coach as well as a wrestling one.

Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling DVD Review

To be completely honest, this is my second Adam Wheeler instructional. My previous experiences with his work did influence me picking this upright as it hit the shelves. Suffice to say, I was right once again. However, Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling is a different level to his previous DVD. This is an instructional that offers a detailed and extremely well-organized look at the foundations of folkstyle wrestling. Namely, in this DVD set, Wheeler goes over everything you need to know, from warm-ups all the way to escapes. In short, if you’re looking to improve your Foslkstyle skills for other grappling arts, particularly BJJ, this is the only resource you’ll ever need!

The Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling DVD has four parts, starting from scratch in the first one, and progressing to advanced stuff in the final one. To be more precise, volume 1 covers the warmup routines and drills that have made folkstyle wrestling famous. Moreover, this is also the takedown DVD, where you get to learn the anatomy of a takedown rather than a bunch of unrelated ones. Disc two head off to the direction of hand fighting and penetration strategies. It is also where you get to learn just about every ankle pick variation in existence. Volume three goes into the sprawling and some front headlock essentials while the final one is all about pins, reversals, and escapes.

Disc 1

Going a bit deeper into what the first volume of the Fundamental Folsktyle Wrestling Adam Wheeler DVD has to offer we take a look at the warmups sequence, Here, Adam goes over a general, and a wrestling specific warmup. Doing both every practice, along with the drills that come next, is a surefire way of preventing injury and getting a bit more of a gas tank in the process.

Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling Adam WheelerThe takedown begins with a real in-depth study of penetration steps. You get to discover how to execute this essential move in different variations, like from the knees, with a partner, the “L” penetration step and more. Rounding off this portion is the infamous double leg takedown, covered in even more detail than the penetration step before. Actually, it is a double leg trip, more than a takedown, which only increases the efficiency of the move.

Disc 2

Part two is all about tying up an opponent and getting into optimal position. Regardless of which grappling martial art you prefer, you need to learn hand fighting. Wrrelsters, particularly folkstyle, have been doing this for decades, so you might as well start there. What Adam Wheeler shows here are different tie-ups that pen up different attacking approaches. Those include lunging into duck under, double leg, high crotch, etc. Moreover, you get a real high-level explanation of the two-on-one, a grip every grappler needs to master.

About halfway through this volume, Wheeler changes gears and focuses on the ankle pick. WE all know how effective this takedown is both with and without a Gi. Well, now you get even more options, as well as a few backstep combos. Finally, a short section on basic and advanced arm drags rounds this volume off.

Disc 3

The Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling DVD continues by dissecting a real staple of wresting – the Sprawl. It is not just about sprawling but also how, and especially when you dop it. Here, you’ll learn how to set up the perfect sprawl. Not only that but there are solo and partner drills to help you perfect timing as well. And, since this is a complete instructional, Adama Wheeler also shows you what to do after you sprawl which is equally as important as sprawling.

In fact, you get some really cool follow u options here. Everyone knows that getting the back the preferred option, However, Wheeler offers a different go behind that is of his own invention. He also demonstrates a few whip overs, before heading into the direction of Nelsons. Here, the ¾ Nelson is the star, a position that offers more head control than any clinch you think you know. Wrapping things up is a short study of the cradle position, particularly from the near side.

Disc 4

Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling Adam Wheeler ReviewThe final portion of the Fundamental Folkstyle Wrestling DVD is actually the largest one. It has two different sections and goes int some basic and some advanced aspects of grappling. Opening the account are pins, the bread, and butter of Folkstyle wrestling. Up first is the chop and bump, or in other words, the perfect way of getting turtled up opponents to the ground. Some classic rides, like the spiral ride, follow suit. Thre are also more Nelson options here, mostly in the form of the Half Nelson, as well as a few more cradle options.

The second section of chapters is all about the defensive side of wresting. Here, Adam Wheeler teaches his favorite escapes, like standing up and switches. He also covers partner drills as well as a bunch of reversals to actually land you the upper hand after you escape.
