BJJ Gis

Although No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is on its rise, rolling with the Gi is still the most common form of Jiu-Jitsu training. this means the Gi represents the most sought-after piece of BJJ related gear out there. No wonder there are so many companies looking to place their products all across the globe. Choosing the right one can be a daunting task even for grapplers, let alone for someone who doesn’t train. So, let’s make things simple. Not all Gis work as best BJJ Christmas presents. The ones that do, though, are the following:

Best BJJ Christmas PresentsYour very first choice of Gi for the holiday season, and 2021, in general, should be Sanabul. Completely preshrunk, this Gi is the top choice for every BJJ practitioner. Both the recreational roller and the high-end competitor are going to find this Gi fits their every need. The Sanabul Essentials v.2 is a new generation single weave Gi, made of an antimicrobial material that also doesn’t retain odors. The collars are stuffed with high tech rubber, making them extremely sturdy and durable. A free belt just tops off this amazing Christmas offer!

Best BJJ Christmas PresentsNext up, the Elite Sports Ultra-Light Gi also deserves your attention. If you are a grappler yourself, consider getting a couple of these, as you’ll want one too, once you lay eyes on it. First great quality – weight. This Gi is truly lightweight and durable, making it perfect for both training and competing. On the subject of competing it is IBJJF approved. The Elite Sports Ultra Light Gi comes with a free belt and, more importantly, is 100% pre-shrunk, Make sure you consider this when choosing the correct size!

Also, this Gi comes in a wider variety of colors, navy blue, pink, and gray adding variety to the regular white black, and blue options. The material is strategically reinforced and resistant to both fungi and microbes.

Rashguards

Normally, right after the Gis, we’ll address the second most sought-after BJJ training item – rashguards. There’s no way to skip over them as we browse the best BJJ Christmas presents for this holiday season. The thing with rashguards is that grapplers that train both with and without the Gi, need them on a daily basis. Wearing one while training No-Gi is pretty obvious unless you like to roll old-school. Wearing one under your Gi makes for a more comfortable experience and helps protect your skin and extend the longevity of your gi. In short, an absolute essential!

Best BJJ Christmas Presents Let’s kick things off with something familiar. We already covered Sanabul as a Gi option, so we’ll just extend that into rashguards. After all, it’s great to have a complete set, isn’t’ it? The first and the most important thing is that we’re talking about ranked rashguards here. that means you do not just get a rashguard for training, but you can also wear it in official IBJJF tournaments. And that includes wearing it under your Gi as well.

This rashguard has strategically placed mesh ventilation, to help reduce odor. It also features antimicrobial and antifungal materials, plus compression that improves blood flow. The rashguard has 4-direction stretch technology, making it durable and hard to tear. On top of everything, you can choose between a long and short-sleeved option!

Short Sleeved Sanabul Essentials Ranked Rashguard

Long Sleeved Sanabul Essentials Ranked Rashguard

Jiu-Jitsu Spats

Another mainstay of modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seems to be the spats. As unusual as they might look at first glance, they actually have a very specific use. Spats offer a huge advantage in No-Gi by providing a solid gripping surface on otherwise very slippery body parts. Of course, this is not their only use. Spats help grapplers stay protected, they aid blood flow via compression, they extend the life of Gi pants and they help keep you warm in winter. All in all, training without spats is pretty much the same as training without a rashguard – only a handful of grapplers are doing it. Plus, a good pair of spats looks awesome when paired with a great rashguard on No-Gi day!

Best BJJ Christmas Presents The Elite Sports spats are an unmistakably solid option for an awesome Jiu-Jitsu gift. They come in a large variety of colors and all the usual sizes. They’re full-length spats which makes them perfect for training Jiu-Jitsu. The material they’re made of is a blend of polyester, nylon, and spandex. The design is also a really cool one, with no unnecessary accessories. The Elite Sports Advanced Grappling spats feature a couple of different colored bands on the ankles, as well as cool designs on both tights. This makes them nominalistic, yet very stylish.

Best BJJ Interval Timers – A 2021 Guide and Reviews

Best Interval Timers in 2019

When you think about BJJ training essential, it is normal that you think about Gi or Rashguards first. However, let’s try and take a look at the broader picture. You obviously need a place to train at. Next up, you need instructors and training partners, duh. Oh and mats, of course, you need mats if you have any hope of returning to train ever again. That’s about it, right? A gym, training partners, mats, and training gear. Well, not quite. If there’s one thing that can drastically help with classes, rolling, and even competition preparation, it’s interval timers. And I’m not talking about a free app on your phone. I’m talking about the best BJJ Interval Timers that you can have to transform your academy into a real lion’s den.

BJJ Interval timers make training easy. It is as easy as that. When you have a gym timer, life is easy. You just set it up and go rolling. Moreover, you can use it to program drills, conditioning, and keep track of technique training time. What’s really useful, is the fact that you can program a bunch of timers with different rest and work periods so that you can alternate them at will. For example, you have one for the warm-up, another for training, a drilling/position sparring timer, and a rolling one. You might even throw in specific competition training rounds in there as well, or even longer rolling times.

On top of it all, there’s no chance of a battery running out or a call disrupting the countdown, like is often the case with phone apps.

Interval Timers

Interval timers are today an essential part of every athlete’s gear. We all have an interval timer variation on our phones. Some use them to work conditioning at the academy or home. others like to sue them to stretch, or even for specific drills. Some even set up their whole classes on their apps. It takes away the guesswork and makes sure everyone has the same amount of time to work a technique or drill.

However, going forward, academies need to turn to professional interval timers that offer a lot more compared to a free app. As such, the best BJJ interval timers out there provide numerous options, from adjustable work, rest, and prep time to programming several different interval patterns at once. All of these are essential to keep a class run smoothly and without interruptions. Plus, they make rolling easy, as you can actually program them to ring at 5, 6, 7, and 10 minutes, for example, allowing each belt level to go hard for the same amount of time as in a tournament. Plus you can set them for longer rounds, like 15 or 20 minutes for those preparing for super fights.

Interval timers are simply a must for any self-respecting gym out there. However, they do not always come cheap, and you need to understand what it is that you’re looking for in one. Our guide has only the absolute best BJJ interval timers you can get to make your academy better in 2021.

BJJ Rolling And Competition Training

Even if you’re not really a big fan of using interval timers during class, they’re undisputed when it comes to rolling. especially those that offer variable programming options. Take, for example, a regular roll. Usually, people set 5 or 6 minutes on the clock and use a minute to rest. However, not everyone likes or needs to roll for the same amount of time. Variable programming means different belts can roll for different times, while also allowing for more rest for beginners. Plus, once you set the rounds, everyone can see how much time is left, how many rounds they’ve rolled, and when rounds start or end. This makes rolling a lot easier, as everyone who’s gotten a timer has discovered.

ON the subject of competition training, having an interval timer is a must. A good timer is going to provide you with options to set up drills, conditioning exercises, or specific rolls very precisely. For example, you can set up different times so that people that compete get a fresh partner in each round. Or you could intermingle conditioning bursts of a certain time with a regular rolling round of 5 minutes. There are actually no limits to what you can do with a good BJJ interval timer, and it’s not much of an investment, given the benefits.

“Barbosinha

Marco “Barbosinha” Barbosa is a legendary black belt, coming from the Rickson Gracie lineage. He got his black belt from Roberto Godi just before the turn of the century. He is also a very accomplished Judo black belt, which is how he discovered BJ jin the first place. Now 53, Barbosa is one of the original pioneers of the pressure BJJ generation.

Born in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Barbosa was into martial arts from a very young age. As a 13-year-old boy, he took up Judo and quickly excelled at it. Actually, Barbosa knew he was going to be a professional grappler as early as 18. it was then that he set on a very clear path of grappling greatness. There was a period of time when Marco, coming from a poor family, spend literally all of his time training. He was in the gym from morning to night, giving his all to Judo. Along the way, he discovered BJJ and decided to widen his arsenal.

Starting under Waldomiro Perez, Barbosa got his purple belt in a short 4 months! The impressive Judoka now started transforming into a well-rounded world-class grappler. Barbosa won the Brazilian nationals at brown and black belt level, along with many other accolades, including three bronze medals from World Championships. Now, he is in charge of Barbosa MMA in Brazil, one of the most successful gyms in the country. The pinnacle, so far, seems to be this brand new Marco Barbosa DVD outlining one of his favorite moves – pressure from top positions.

Pressure, Passing, And Strategy

Pressure passing is one of those skills everyone pursues. The thing with pressure passing is that it has pre-requisites that you can’t skip past. The thing with pressure passing is it isn’t a set of techniques. it actually is a concept that builds on two main foundations. The first is your knowledge of actual guard passing techniques. the second your understanding of weight distribution for Jiu-Jitsu and your ability to use it.

The good news is that the Pressure Passing Manual Marco Barbosa DVD is just that – a manual. Marco is going to give you his life experience as a Judo and Jiu-Jitsu black belt in order to teach you how to stay heavy at all times. All you need is a basic understanding of the fundamentals of guard passion for BJJ. The thing with pressure passing is that you need to find a way past your opponent’s legs while staying really heavy on them. Since the legs are really mobile and often very flexible, passing in any way is extremely difficult, let alone with pressure. Lucky for you, Barbosa has the ultimate hack – a way to position your self so that every pass turns into a pressure pass.

Pressure passing is a great way to ensure you break the opponent’s will along with the pass. It is also a way to make sure they give further positions and/or submissions away. As humans, we have a huge aversion to being pressured into tight and uncomfortable positions. We also do not like other people being on top of us. Brabosas’ style prays on these fundamental traits of the human begin, submitting the opponent’s with sheer pressure.

“The Pressure Passing Manual” Marco Barbosa DVD

This Marco Barbosa DVD is a very rare specimen, even among the ever-growing BJJ DVD collection available today. This DVD contains “only” two volumes. Each of them is about 60 minutes long. That means you get two hours of information on how to become the ultimate pressure passer from hell. And on top of everything, you get it all with crispy clean sound and perfect camera work. Not to mention Barbosa himself, and his decades of teaching experience.

Part 1

IT all starts with some philosophy. If you’ve ever been around grapplers like Barbosa, you know their understanding of Jiu-Jitsu runs really deep. So, whenever they open up on the philosophies of their style you need to listen very carefully. With Barbosa, it all starts with his take on guard passing. he shares his philosophy and the most important pointers for anyone looking to become a pressure passer.

Immediately after, Barbo’s transitions into some key drills for guard passing. Do not be surprised at the names of some of his moves. While they’re all based in basic guard passing motions, Barbosa likes to precisely name most of the moves he uses. So you’ll learn about the Helix, the parachutist, the chair drill along with many others.  There’s something that’s also really important here – guard pass stabilization. This is where most people (me included) go wrong with pressure passing. Well, not anymore. All key concepts about stabilizing the opponent’s hips are here -all you need to do is listen and then give them a try.

Finally, this volume also contains information on mount retention and some key attacks. there are also paths that tie together passes and the mount position. Of course, some side control tips are also a part of this incredible DD instructional.

Part 2

Marco Barbosa DVD Pressure Passing Manual Part 2 of the “Pressure Passing Manual” Marco Barbosa DVD starts with a subject many advanced students will find useful – passing flexible guards. With today’s modern BJJ guard game focusing a lot on flexibility, some people’s guards are literally impossible to pass. Barbo’s share’s his take on modern guard position as well as his strategies that help him overcome them.

Another crucial BJJ concept that you’ll learn here is head control. Forget all you think you know about controlling the head or using the cross face. This DVD is going to teach you the correct way to use head control in order to make yourself heavier.

Barbos also touches on a subject he also excels at – breaking down the turtle. He offers a few methods of placing extreme pressure on turtled opponents along with a few back taking routes. The cherry on the cake is his crazy effective and extremely easy lapel choke finish.

Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional – “Half Gaurd Anthology”

Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional the half guard anthology

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, individuality is a huge thing. To that extent, we have a whole host of instructors out there that express themselves through the gentle ARt. Still, there are two predominant “schools” of thought. On one side, we have the old school guys and girls. People the likes of Roger Gracie, Rickson or Marco Barbosa. They’re all about pressure, keeping things simple and being able to use BJJ in self-defense. Then, we have a new school. There, people like John Danaher, Ryan Hall, and Lachlan Giles, to name a few, teach by way of going deep into Jiu-jitsu and understand the philosophical fundamentals of it. For them, it’s all about concepts rather than straightforward techniques. Yet, when I hear that a new Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional is out, I truly get the jitters. This time, it is a set about the half guard.

Seriously, what’s up with Australia and high-level grapplers? Or, to be more precise, high-level grappling coaches. First, we all got to see Danaher’s masterful instructions, and now, the next generation of high-level Aussie instructors is already on the rise. And it’s leading edge is Lachlan Giles. Lachlan is the man behind Melbourne MMA, as well as one of the most fearsome competitors of today – Craig Jones. Giles is a modern version of Danaher, missing most of his injuries, yet none of his wits, it seems. Lachlan is the author of a few very successful DVDs so far, but none of them is up to par with the latest Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional. The “Half Guard Anthology” is an 8 part DVD set that has you covered for life on the subject of the half guard.

Lachlan Giles’ Half Guard

The half guard is one of the most common subjects of BJJ DVDs. It is also one of the most exploited positions in Jiu-Jitsu. Everyone, from beginners to the highest level black belts, has a game that involves the half guard, at least in a small part. The reason for this is that the half guard is a highly effective position that offers plenty of variety. It is also one of the BJ positions that evolved the most during the years.

Roberto ‘Gordo” Correa is the man responsible for the half guard. while nursing an injury to his leg, he decided to play half guard when everyone else was playing the closed guard. the rest is history. the half guard evolved a lot through the years, from basic positions like the Z-guard that Lachlan favors, to the deep half guard and Cyborg’s tornado guard. All of them have their advantages and drawbacks, of course.

What Lachlan did is bring organization and clarity to a position that offers a lot, but in a hectic manner. Simply put, the Lchaln Giles DVD Instructional is a complete half guard system that covers absolutely everything you need to know. It is one of the largest DVD sets of all times, with the “Half guard Anthology” numbering 8 DVDs in total with almost 10 hours of material. Everything that works is there, organized in a system that not only teaches you but encourages you to build upon it.

Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional Review – The Half Guard Anthology

“The half Guard Anthology” Lachlan Giles DVD instructional is an in-depth analysis of everything related to the half guard. Lachlan is an extremely knowledgeable grappler, with a rich history of competing and teaching world-class athletes. QWhat you need to know is that this instructional is a No-gi one, meaning Lachlan covered all bases. What you learn without the gi, is very to use with the Gi as well. The first Part of this Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional is dedicated to acquainting you with the system. Namely, Giles goes over a basic introduction before explaining the layout of the whole DVD. Since this is such a huge instructional, Lachlan has a chapter dedicated to how best to use the instructional, depending on your level of experience. he also goes over all the specific things, like sweeps, that we’ll cover later on in the instructional.

The DVD than shifts to a more technical portion. This first volume focuses on entries to the half guard. On this subject, it features entries both again ta kneeling and standing opponent. as well as a complete system that brings everything together. There’s also crucial information on adjusting your half guard attacks to the opponent’s guard passing attempts.

DVD 2 – Half Guard Recovery And  The Crossface Underhook

The dreaded “shoulder of justice” AKA the Crossface is the central subject of the second part of the Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional. However, you probably haven’t used this variation up to now – it’s from the bottom. The crossface underhook is a unique way of ensuring full or half guard recovery in every bad situation. It is the basis of working further half guard variations so you need to really understand this concept.

Further along in this volume, Lachlan begins to get into some of the first half guard variations. Giles starts with the switch base half guard a variation that then goes into turtle guard and other fancy systems. This continues into the three-quarter mount, or quarter guard. What you’ll learn here is that one of the positions you do not even consider as being half guard actually offers a lot of offensive opportunities. The front-headlock completes this volume, as a natural extension of successful half guard attacks.

DVD 3 – Knee Shield Attacks

While the second portion was all about guard recovery and counter-attacking, the third portion is all attack. Lachlan goes into the basics of the knee shield, AKA the Z-guard. Giles is actually known for his prowess with it, as is his protege Craig Jones. Entries preceded the attacking potions from this very utilized BJJ position.

Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional Half Guard AnthologyThe first attacks covered in the third part of this Lachlan Giles DVD instructional begins with attacks from the underhook position. As the DVD goes on, it stems into more versatile positions, like the overhead knee shield half guard. Multiple varied attacks include submissions, sweeps as well as positional disruptions of your opponents’ base and posture. Following right after is a portion on additional attacks. Here, you’ll find a system of primary and secondary attacks from multiple of knee shield-related positions.

Just as you think that you’re all done with this DVD, there’s a huge portion left – troubleshooting. A portion like this is actually a regular thing in this Lachlan Giles DVD instructional and has integral information that eliminates the need for a Q&A.

DVD 4 – Underhook Half Guard Attacks

The underhook half guard is arguably the most often used variation in BJJ. The trouble lately, is that people are getting wiser to attacks like D’arce chokes which take away from the underhook half guard’s efficiency. Well, there’ll be no more of that after you see this volume of the Half Guard Anthology DVD. OF course, things kick off with an overview of what’s to come.

The first part of this volume is about the main attacks from the underhook half guard. Once again, you have primary and secondary attack options and combinations. The real value of this chapter is what comes next. There are about a dozen chapters in this volume dedicated to important underhook half guard concepts. They are exactly the thing you need to counter everything your opponent might try and throw at you.

Following closely is the inevitable troubleshooting section, which takes up about half of this volume. Finally, there are clear directions on how to put everything together. A lot of information and we’re only halfway through!

DVD 5 – Underhook Kneecut, Reverse Half And Jedi Mind Trick

If the title of this volume of the Lachlan Giles DVD instructional is not enough to get you intrigued, maybe you should find a new sport. The mandatory overview beginning is there, giving you an outline of what’s to come. Then, real half guard magi begin.

The Kneecut Underhook is probably what you’re going to end up using most from this complete instructional.  Lot’s of attacks, the backstep half guard as well as key counters are all in there. Basically, everything you need to never lose the half guard ever again. A real gem in this volume is the reverse half. Nobody has ever done a more comprehensive study of it than Giles. Expect to use it a lot after you go over all the information available here.

After Lachlan shows you how everything works as a system once again, he moves on to a favorite of mine – the dogfight position. He covers the position, main attacks, additional attacks and, of course, troubleshooting.

DVD 6 – Sit Up Guard And Shin-To-Shin

In the sixth volume, Lachlan starts to open up the half guard, literally. The sit up and shin to shin guard is the next doors neighbors fo the half guard. Actually, they’re just seated variations, if you come to think about it. How does it all work?

To begin with, Giles is going to explain what to do when you can only reach one leg. He offers a host of single-leg options, including the sit-up guard. The shin-to-shin guard is not far behind with primary, secondary attacks, and counterattacks organized in a tight little sub-system. The volume wraps up with additional attacking options and the always present troubleshooting section.

DVD 7 – Reverse De La Riva Guard

The Reverse De La Riva comes naturally whenever an opponent stands up from your half guard. or, you might use it to enter the half guard. Whatever the case, it is a huge part of any successful half guard game. Of course, it has its own volume in this Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional.

Lachlan Giles DVD InstructionalWhen you’re in the Reverse De La Riva, it is normal to be attacking the back. Spinning attacks make up almost half of this volume, offering a lot of variety to a regular half guard game. AS you can see, all your options of your back are covered here. The way everything comes together is through pathways that connect the RDLR with the seated guard. These key transitions are covered in depth-giving everything a new dimension. Troubleshooting is here, as always to take away any unlikely questions you might be left with. but that’s not all.

It seems Lachlan had a lot more to say, so he really jam-packed this volume. There’s a new section here on the waiter position, offering sweets and transitions you’ve probably never seen before. And again, primary and secondary attacks are the main feature, along with directions of putting it all together.

DVD 8 – Narrated Rolls

If you’ve ever seen a Lachlan Giles DVD Instructional, you know the final volume is reserved fro narrated rolls. Given the amount of information in the Half guard Anthology DVD instructional the last volume has a lot to cover. So it’s not surprising that Giles has someone helping out – Kit Dale.

Before Kit Dale pops in to roll with Lachlan, though, Giles has something to say about Z-guard Kimuras. Actually, he has a complete system that’s going to make you a Kimura machine from the bottom.

Mikey Musumeci DVD: High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks

Mikey Musumeci DVD: High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructionals on the subjects of leg locks are popping up left, right, and center these days. As BJJ attempts to catch up to other grappling martial arts like Sambo or Catch wrestling in the leg locking department, everyone seems to be recording instructionals. However, not everyone is actually fit to do so. there are even people that are blue belts and are coming out with BJJ leg locks videos, claiming they work. As far as proven resources, if you like leg locks, you can’t go wrong with Danaher’s or Craig Jones’ work. On the other hand, if you are an IBJJF competitor, you only have one legitimate option – the brand new Mikey Musumeci DVD named “High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks”.

Mikey Musumeci is one of those grapplers that I’d let teach me everything. You know the old “if you want to really learn BJJ, learn from a small guy”. Well, they can hardly get smaller, or more technical, than Mikey Musumeci. Despite his size, his grappling game is on fire, as he has proven on multiple occasions against opponents of all sizes. Now, Musumeci offers his insight into the ultimate giant-killing moves that grappling martial arts have to offer – leg locks. However, he keeps things very precise, by focusing solely on those lower limb submissions that are legal under IBJJF rules. Despite this significantly shortening available arsenal, this Mikey Musumeci DVD has more than enough options to make you a Danaher Death Squad level leg locker in the IBJJF circuit.

Mikey Musumeci

As one of the smallest high-level grapplers of our time, Mikey Musumeci’s name usually comes in a pair. Very often he is connected to his sister, Tammi Musumeci who is also a high-profile grappler and black belt. Just recently, Mickey Musumeci delivered a DVD instructional on the subject of guard retention and back takes. Typical small guy stuff, right? Well, now he expands his giant-killing resources with a brand new Mikey Musumeci DVD.

Michael Musumeci is a Gilbert Burns and Jonas Gurgel black belt. He is one of the few grapplers that has a black belt from two outstanding professors. Musumeci, born in 1996 made a name for himself by becoming a champion in almost every level of the sport. His first competitive success came in the juvenile divisions, and he never looked back. He holds world titles at every belt level and is a 2-time black belt IBJJF world champion, on top of plenty of other titles.

Originally from New Jersey, the 22-year-old switched a few academies during his grappling reign. Now, he is a part of the Caio Terra Association, a real den for highly technical lighter-weight grapplers. he had a pretty public “bust-up” with Atos, where he trained before. He actually got his black belt at the age of 18, making him a real phenom in the world of BJJ. Now, after a very rich and still ongoing IBJJF career, he sheds light on a very “controversial” subject in BJJ. Leg locks under the IBJJF were never seen as a potent weapon, until recently, with a few exceptions. Now one of those exceptions has a brand new resource on the subject – the High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks Mikey Musumeci DVD.

IBJJF Leg Lock Rules

Mikey Musumeci is no stranger to using leg locks during tournaments of the highest caliber. Although people know him mostly due to his Berimbolo efforts, Musumeci is a very well-rounded grappler. You’d expect nothing else from someone who’s been competing under IBJJF rules since childhood. And that is exactly the person that you should turn to lift the veil of mystery of what’s legal under IBJJF rules. At least in the leg locks department.

To be honest, there’s actually not much left that we do not know about IBJJF rules on leg locks. What basically everybody can do is a straight footlock. In terms of submissions, kneebars and toe holds are the only other options available. However, they’re both locked until you reach the brown belt. Even then, the toehold is the only twisting submission you can get. The main trouble people with IBJJF rules are positions. The stuff that is actually illegal in certain leg configurations that allow you to attack leg locks in the first place.

This is exactly where this latest Mikey Musumeci DVD comes in. Through a decade of IBJJF experience, Musumeci found a way to make things work. First of all, you won’t get stuck in any of the “reaping” positions condemned by the IBJJF. Next, you’ll learn how to be extremely effective with all three main weapons from legal positions. Some of the positions are going to get you thinking because not even Danaher has them in his system. yet they work for Musumeci, so it means they’ll do great for you as well!

Mikey Musumeci DVD – High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks

Who is this Musumeci DVD for? The answer is easy – almost everyone. Apart from kids and juvenile competitors, everyone else can use the information in the High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks instructional. While competitors under the rank of the brown belt are somewhat limited, there are still a lot of options to build a very solid IBJJF friendly leg lock game.

The DVD contains 4 volumes, which is by now, somewhat of a mus for a serious BJJ video instructional. The production is top-notch, with no glitches in any technical department. Mikey Musumeci himself is an outstanding coach and teacher. The way he delivers information and has things organized progressively ensures everything is clear in every chapter. On the subject of chapters, this DVD is very Neil Melansonesque. Musumeci goes for quality over quantity in most of the volumes, offering an extreme amount of info organized in just a few chapters. According to me, this is the best way of delivering grappling information via video instructionals.

#1 Introductory Ankle Locks

Of course, the “High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks” Mikey Musumeci DVD starts with an introduction. By the way, it is just the introduction we needed – one covering leg lock rules instead of only techniques. Mikey also offers an insight into his system of highly effective positions for hunting leg locks. The perfect DVD for beginners and/or those just starting with leg locks.

Mikey Musumeci DVD: High Percentage IBJJF Legal FootlocksThe system Mikey has is extremely simple to grasp. He has three main positions for attacking ankle locks. The first is the open hip position, meaning you have no direct control over the opponent’s hip. This is where he demonstrates a great variation of the tripod ankle lock, as well as a bottom finishing option. Next, it the straight knee position, an innovative way of finishing ankle locks from an unusual position. The final option is the knee closed position, something more akin to the Ashi Garami we usually use. All are extremely efficient at delivering air-tight ankle locks on opponents of all skill levels.

Finally, there are a few additional useful options, like dealing with an opponent that comes up. There’s also a sneaky counter to ankle locks that you’ll surely find useful.

#2 Footlocks & Berimbolo Toe Holds

Chapter two is something blue and purple belts will find particularly useful. Especially purple belts. Here, Mikey Musumeci keeps exploring IBJJF legal ankle locks but also introduces his trademark baby bolo to the mix. And along with it, he gets into toe holds.

To holds are arguably the most efficient and potentially dangerous submission you can get under IBJJF rules. However, most people do not expect them from a Berimbolo. Or, better said, a baby bolo. First of all, this is the DVD where Musumeci first mentions the leg hug. As you’ll see further on, the leg hug is a great spot for launching all kinds of leg locking attacks. The leg hug leads to the baby bolo or directly into toe holds. On top of everything, there are crucial combinations of ankle locks and toe holds. All the ankle lock positions from the previous volume come back into play, along with the knee hug and toe holds. As you can see, Musumeci’s system gets progressively more complex, offering a lot of variety, all the while keeping things IBJJF legal.

#3 Kneebars

The third volume of the  “High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks” Mikey Musumeci DVD is the perfect BJJ instructional. It contains only four chapters, each covering a lot of in-depth facts about leg locks. In particular, this is the DVD where kneebars enter the frame. Here’s where things get into advanced territory.

Mikey Musumeci DVD: High Percentage IBJJF Legal FootlocksMusumeci’s kneebar setup is certainly a unique one. It comes as no surprise, really, as smaller people need to find a way to leverage larger opponents a bit differently.  There’s a great setup to ensure you’ll get to the kneebar every time, and incredible details to ensure a tap. Finishing variations only provide additional submission options, even against stubborn opponents. Namely, Musumeci shows you how to transform the straight kneebar into a twisting submission.

The leg hug position is a big part of this DVD as well. It is the perfect avenue into leg locks. It also offers a great back-taking route, or the option to switch to the most brutal IBJJF legal leg lock – a calf slicer.

#4 The Leg Hug Series And More

The final chapter contains only three chapters. Do not panic, all three last an excess of 20 minutes, providing complete systems as opposed to just simple techniques. Unsurprisingly, the leg hug is the starting point once again. It’s a position you’ll soon learn to love, trust me. However, except advanced series in this final chapter of the “High Percentage IBJJF Legal Footlocks” Mikey Musumeci DVD.

The first chapter outlines how to get from the leg hug, via a kiss of the dragon, to “baby bull”. it is a flow, rather than a move, so it’s going to require some basic knowledge of BJJ movement patterns. There’s also a crazy effective calf slicer from the leg hug, which you can set up in a whole bunch of different ways. The final series is all about connecting the dots. What you get is a leg drag, that actually starts as a kneebar attack, which then goes in a calf slicer. Wicked stuff from the little grappling magician!

Machado Black Belt Attacked In Front of His Academy – Attacker Came Back and Apologized

Earlier this week we wrote:
Attacking anyone is usually a bad idea no matter how strong and tough you think you are. But attacking a BJJ Black Belt is probably the worse Idea of all.

This time attacker attacked Rigan Machado Black Belt Adam Nadow. According to Adam Nadow’s post on facebook, some guy attacked him in front of his BJJ school after being banned from the shopping center for harassing people in there.

As Adam is saying attacker came within striking distance and threw a bottle at Adam and tried to put him down with a cheap shot. As it usually goes against BJJ practitioners Adam dropped down for a successful double leg and immediately passed attackers guard to a side control. After that Adam mounted his attacker from knee on belly.

After Adam asked his attacker to calm down, attacker agreed but soon after tried to punch Adam with a groin attack.

As that was too much for Adam he turned him down on the stomach and flattened the attacker out while keeping him in a rear naked choke control. Soon he realized he needs to put him to sleep as he needs to reach his phone to call the cops.

Soon after Adam reached police he woke him up assuring him that he doesn’t want to hurt him. He kept him there until police came.

This was pretty well done by Adam Nadow as he didn’t use any excessive force no matter that attacker tried to injure him on sight without any warning.

Check video Below and whAdamdam said in his Facebook post:

“This gentleman decided to attack me, in front of my BJJ studio. (This is an abridged version of what happened. Still too long)
He has been banned from the Village shopping center for harassing families and woman. I have heard of him, but never saw him in the center myself. He came within striking distance, threw a bottle at me and sat deep into a haymaker, I dropped for a double leg. Took him down and passed to tight side control. Mounted from knee on belly, used pure BJJ to control him. He agreed to calm down and then tried to hit me “below the belt” I realized I had to call the cops as soon as I could subdue him. Turned him down on his stomach, and flattened him out. I set a rear naked choke, (Mata leaõ) I felt that I needed to put him to sleep to get my phone and call for assistance. He was obviously raging off of some substance, he was very… VERY strong. Once I secured his back, and lock into his lapel for a possible bow and arrow (should I need it), I woke him up using my hooks to lift his legs. As he comes to, I assure him I do not want to hurt him, I am calling the police and to remain calm. About this time, my business neighbor from panache dance studio walked out and started filming. I was able to use my BJJ to control a violent attacker (on some substance…… allegedly).Bjj kept me safe and made it possible to control my opponent with very little damage to either party. Oddly he makes a reference to me “crossing my feet” from the back, (which of course I was NOT doing), so think he may have trained some BJsomewherere. I hope he gets the help he needs. Come in and learn applicable self-defense or attack a BJJ black belt and the first lesson is always free,….. ” – Wrote Nadow

UPDATE:

Now, a week later Adam Nadow shared an update on the situation. Adam Moss, the guy who attacked Adam Nadow in front of his studio had come to apologize. Unfortunately, homeless and agitated at the time, but humbled and grounded now.

“Look who stopped by.
Adam Moss the guy who attacked me. He showed up during class, he came to apologize. I was shocked. He seemed level and grounded. I asked why he was so upset,…and what his situation was. He said he is homeless and has trouble sometimes controlling himself. he seemed to not totally be able to remember the situation. But all the same, he came hat in hand. I had to respect the apology. He said he was hungry and cold, I went to the store and purchased him a bag of food and water. Also, the team chipped in and got him a gift card for food at Safeway. He also needed a tent. So I’m going to get him one sat when he comes back. The food will be given weekly to help him under the agreement that he gets some help and doesn’t assault anyone. Glad he stopped by. Made my night.” – Wrote Nadow

Nadow was asked about his attacker if he’s by any chance training with them right now but the answer is not good at all. Unfortunately, Adam Moss is currently in jail according to Medford Police Department, said Nadow.

“He was supposed to come back sat, my team got him a tent and sleeping bag to help with the winter. We also got a program to help him with sobriety and job placement under the agreement that he would not get into any more trouble. Turns out he’s in jail again according to Medford PD.” – wrote Nadow

Straight Blast Gym

You don’t have to be a grappler or fighter to know what Straight Blast Gym is. Every fight fan in the world is aware of the SBG, largely thanks to Conor McGregor. Well, the founder of the Straight Blast Gym and its worldwide network is Matt Thornton. And his empire is one that should be admired.

Matt Thornton DVD Mastering The MountThe Straight Blast Gym is one of the oldest MMA gyms in the world, in existence for 20 years and counting. It has its roots in Portland, Oregon. Matt’s goal with the SBG was to create a fighting university with global reach, which he succeeded indeed. The main aim of the SBG, as Thronton states, is to explore the world of fighting and figure out what works and what doesn’t. Experimentation is something that the SBG prides itself in, after being on the forefront of much of the innovations in combat sports, BJJ included.

Today, the SBG has more than 50 affiliates around the world and is home for many of the fighters and champions on the UFC roster. On top of those, plenty of Jiu-Jitsu world champions, combat sports athletes and law enforcement members are regulars in SBG locations across the globe. The “Mastering The Mount” Matt Thornton DVD is the latest resource that this gym offers to the wider audience, in an attempt to further help us understand grappling.

Old School Mount, Matt Thornton Style

What makes Matt’s mount system better than most people is his philosophies about the position, prior to his vast technical knowledge. Matt is a 4th-degree black belt under the legendary Chris Haueter, one of the BJJ dirty dozen. Chris is the definition of old-school BJJ, so you can see how his longtime student Thornton is much of the same. Mat got his black belt in 2002, meaning he has extremely vast experience in grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Matt’s JIu-Jitsu principles are very simple, and the “Mastering The Mount” DVD is clearly built on them. While Matt is a big fan of training as hard as possible, he has a clear rule when it comes to rolling – never go 100%. This outlines how much emphasis he places on technical control and the ability to keep your opponent in place without physical effort. Rolling should be clean and very specific, as this is the best way to sharpen your skills for actual matches or fights.

Furthermore, Matt is of the “never back down” variety. What that means is that when he gets to mount. there’s no way you’re getting out whether it is to half guard or to a full reversal. Well, this Matt Thornton DVD is going to teach you how to apply this never say die mentality to your BJJ game, and in particular to your mount. After all, Matt did get his blue belt from Rickson himself, and we all know Rickson never goes back after attaining a dominant position like the mount!

Review Of “Mastering The Mount” – Matt Thornton DVD

This Matt Thornton DVD does not come in a format that we’re all used to. BJJ DVDs usually follow a pretty straightforward format, usually involving multiple volumes and specific chapters. Well, Thornton changes all that with “Mastering The Mount”. This DVD is very uniquely set up in lessons as opposed to classical chapters.

What you get with the “Mastering The Mount” Matt Thornton DVD are 15 lessons that each outline a very precise philosophy of mount. While techniques do feature in this DVD, this instructional is more of a conceptual one. You’ll learn how to obtain the mount, stay there, how to distribute weight and become “unbuckable”. Moreover, you’ll discover how to attack with both pressure and submissions, until you get an inevitable tap. A uniquely set up instructional that is going to revolutionize your mount game, regardless of your belt level.

Framing Fundamentals

If there’s one thing you absolutely have to understand in Jiu-Jitsu it is the concept of frames. Frames can work for or against you, depending on the situation. Form the mount, frames a usually a means of creating space in order to escape. However, there’s nothing usual about this Matt Thornton DVD. So, what you get as a concept is how to use frames as an attacking system form the mount.

However, this is not before Matt explains how frames-work, and especially defensive ones. The goal with this is simple- prevent your opponent from ever framing successfully. Matt offers options on both preventing the frames, as well as deconstructing them. There’s also the method of redirecting frames. Plus, you’ll learn how to make them completely ineffective at bearing your weight. You can then use it to pressure your opponents from the mount.

P&P – Posture And Pressure

When it comes to pressure from the mount, there’s nothing really mysterious about it. We all know we need to be HEAVY when we’re in the mount. So, you’re either advanced enough to understand weight distribution form the mount, or you’re enough of a beginner to know how it feels. Whatever the case, you need pressure. Well, Matt is going to teach you how to get it, and the secret ingredient might surprise you.

The thing about pressure from the mount is, that it rarely works without proper posture. The same holds true vice versa. You need to know how to optimize your posture in order to stay heavy at all times. You also need to know how to manipulate your opponent’s posture so that your pressure feels a lot heavier. It is all in there, and Matt does a great job of explaining it clearly.

The Principle Of Connection

Matt Thornton DVD Mastering The MountThis is probably matt’s best principle. It is also one that he is known about in the grappling world. Matt is a strong believer in conceptual Jiu-Jitsu, and the principle of connection is one of the most fundamental things you need to understand. it’s quite easy, actually. If you do not establish a connection with your training partner/opponent, you can’t grapple. The way you establish the connection is going to be detrimental to your success, or lack of it.

The “Mastering The Mount” Matt Thornton DVD dedicates a whole lesson on the subject of connections. The better you understand the distance, gripping, positioning and other nuances of staying in perfect position, the better your mount is going to be. AS simple as it sounds, this is arguably the most important lesson on this amazing DVD.

Extra Features

As far as sneak peeks go, the above is more than enough to tickle your imagination. After all, this Matt Thornton DVD is so high-level, that we can’t absolutely do it justice by simply reviewing it. Matt put a lot of time and effort into it and made a real gem of an instructional. Wha you need to do is get it and go over all the 15 incredible lessons in it.

There’s also an unprecedented feature you get with every purchase. It is direct access to Matt himself. That way, you get to ask all your questions directly to the source and get valuable feedback. On top of everything, the complete mount curriculum is in there, available in both a DVD and digital format. If you like the mount position, then you should get this DVD as soon as possible. If you do not like the mount then this DVD is something you absolutely need in order to become better at BJJ.

BJJ Sweep That Doesn’t Fail – The “100% Sweep”

BJJ Sweep The 100%

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you had a BJJ sweep that you can rely on 100 % of the time? Yet, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has so far taught you that there are no techniques that work flawlessly at every attempt. Well, we’re here to break that rule and change your perspective. Today it is going to be a BJJ sweep, but tomorrow you may be the one to figure out another technique that’s unmistakably effective. All it takes is to keep an open mind and analyze everything deeply. Eddie Bravo is one of the people who truly dissects BJJ to its very core. One of those analyses gave birth to the 100 % sweep, which is as effective a the name suggests.

While 10th PLanet Jiu-Jitsu moves are notorious for their unorthodox names, these techniques seems to break that pattern. If there was a move that Eddie named simply and effectively it is the 100 % BJJ sweep. This sweep is so effective it works from multiple positions and is extremely easy to master. Furthermore, the positions it leads into are all high point positions that offer plenty of follow up submissions. All in all, this is a sweep that everyone needs and today we’ll do our best to break it down for you. And yes, it is just as effective with the Gi as it is in a rashguard and a pair of shorts.

One of Eddie Bravo’s top black belt instructors, Brandon McCaghren opens up the door to some of 10th Planet’s most important systems. His “Rubber Guard: The Meathook” DVD set is an amazing gateway into 10th PLanet Jiu-Jitsu, explained at the highest level possible!

The 100% BJJ Sweep

The 100% BJJ sweep is one of the simplest moves you’ll ever learn in BJJ. Yet, if you do not have a wrestling background, it’ll come as somewhat of a surprise to you. The reason a lot of Gi based academies pass this BJJ sweep by is that of legality issues. While it is not a neck crank by itself, the sweep can end in a nasty neck crank. However, if you do not want to get into trouble, all you need to do is modify how you grip after you complete the sweep. Problem solved.

The basic position for hitting the 100% is the closed guard. The basic position that the 100% BJJ sweep leads into is side control. However, there are plenty of variations on the above. As you’ll discover further in this article, you can also hit the sweep from open guards like the butterfly guard or the half guard. You can also choose one of a multitude of positions to finish in – back control, truck, twister, mount, etc.

The 100% BJJ sweepFor the very basic 100 % sweep setup, you stat in a closed guard with one goal in mind – breaking the opponent’s posture. You need to control their posture completely if you’ll have any hope of getting the 100%. From there you should push the head of the opponent to one side of your body, similar to when you’re attacking with a guillotine. The next step is to thread your arm under the armpit of the opponent’s arm on the side where their head is. What you’re going for is a gable grip behind their shoulder. It is now safe to open the closed guard, and use the leg on the same side you’re controlling to push off the mats and sweep your opponent.

From A Guillotine Attempt

A great way to set up the 100 % BJJ sweep si with an arm-in Guillotine. Actually, the sweep doubles as a backup move to a potentially failed guillotine. Whenever you end up stuck into an arm-in guillotine you always have the 100% sweep ready to go. It is preferable that you’re in closed guard in order for a successful transition. However, even the butterfly guard is going to do the trick, as long as you control the posture.

BJJ Sweep From Guillotine The main thing is to maintain control over the head. This comes easy as there’s not much distance that your arm needs to travel to get the 100% grip. The side you should establish the grips on is the side where the opponent’s head is. That means you’ll need to get the choking arm out of a Guillotine position and thread it under the opponent’s armpit. This is not hard to accomplish when they’re defending the choke. Once you get the gable grip it’s smooth sailing to the end, just like before.

Back Take

Taking the back is going to require a bit more maneuvering than the “regular” 100% BJJ sweep. Once you start hitting 100%, people are going to begin countering it. The thing is that they won’t be able to counter the sweep, but they’ll try to escape the final position. Since you can’t neck crank people under IBJJF rules, this means that you won’t be able to secure mount or side control as easily as in No-Gi.

100 % BJJ Sweep To back What you need to do after you end up on top is to keep the grips. This is imperative if you want to establish a good position. When you end up on top and an opponent tries to turn away from you into the turtle position, the grips going to help you prevent them. As the opponent turns, use your top leg to hook their hip on the top side. From there, you’ll use a chair sit motion, sitting back over your opposite leg’s shin to pull the opponent into back control. Then you can insert the second hook and change your upper body control to a seatbelt. Or, you can see how to get the truck position instead.

Truck Attacks

100 % BJJ Sweep The truck is a position that’s somewhat easier to acquire than the back. The first part of the transition is the same as with the back take. You’ll want to control the opponent with the initial grip and get a top hook in. However, instead of going for a back take, you’ll switch things up a bit. The goal here is to use the grip to pull the opponent’s hips on top of yours. At the same time, you want to release the grip and place grip on their near side toes. Your legs should go into a lockdown configuration on the opposite side leg (the side where you placed the hook).

The only trouble with this position is again due to rules. Under IBJJF rules with the Gi, most of the submissions available from this position are only legal at the brown belt level. Even then, some are not allowed at all, so you might end up using the truck position as just a checkpoint between the100% BJJ sweep and back control.

From Top Half Guard

There’s one setup that we also need to mention that is not exactly a sweep. While it does provide insight into how you can set up the 100 % BJJ sweep from half guard, it starts from the top. When you find yourself in top half guard and the opponent gets an underhook in, they’re begging for the 100%. Simply place the grip on their far arm, the one that’s posting on the ground. Once you wrap it up you’ll want to do something that’s frowned upon in BJJ – get on your back.

100 % BJJ SweepThe thing is that once you get down, you won’t stay there. There are no sweep points if you do not stay on your back for longer than 2 seconds. And all you’re doing with the 100% from the top is essentially rolling on the ground. You’ll end up in top half guard but now, you’ll have complete control of the upper body so you can go directly into the mount. It is essentially a way to pass by using a sweep.

The 200% BJJ Sweep

Since BJJ is all about evolution and experimentation, some people managed to figure out how to stall the 100% BJJ sweep. Once you topple them over they’ll bridge in order to try and keep you on the ground. However, unless they break the grip they’ll have a hard time establishing a top position. That said, some people are going to be able to break free due to your tweaked mechanical positioning. This is where the 2.0 version of the 100% sweep comes into play – the 200% sweep.

BJJ Sweep Essentials - The 100%For the 200% BJJ sweep, there’s nothing that’s essentially new in the sweep other than your grip configuration. Instead of going for a gable grip, this time you’ll aim to thread your first arm even deeper under the armpit. The goal is to slap a figure four grip this time, just like with a rear naked choke. This is going to allow you to control the opponent with both a pulling and a pushing motion. All counters are now rendered ineffective you can go into any of the options we presented above. Or, even something of your own choosing.
