Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise Vacation: Submissions On The High Seas

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise

You’ve dreamed of traveling somewhere exotic in order to learn from and train BJJ with people from distant locales. You want to know what it’s like to hike through tropical rainforests and sip cold beers on the beach, with people with whom you’ve built comradery through the long training session you put in together that morning. Throw in a little top notch black belt instruction, maybe some five-star chef-prepared meals, and perhaps even some ocean adventures, and you’ve got yourself a one of a kind vacation. MMA Travel Adventures is one company that wants to take you on such an adventure. It’s
headed by a BJJ practitioner who loves vacationing as much as she does BJJ. The next
adventure the company is creating came together as she decided to merge her favorite type of travel -cruising, with her favorite sport-BJJ. Out of this came to the coolest seminar idea ever: MMA Travel Adventures’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise.

The cruise sets sail October 6-13th of 2019 from Orlando, Florida. If you’ve ever been on a cruise before, you know that a ship is the absolute perfect venue

Introducing The Instructors

Participants in this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise adventure will have exclusive access to a private training area, where top-notch black belt instructors will conduct daily seminars. In that sense, the four black belts leading the training include:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise – The Best “Traincation”

So, now let’s talk about why a cruise is a perfect venue for this type of “traincation.” Cruise ships of the new millennium, and especially the one chosen for this adventure, are
loaded with activities for every type of traveler. It’s literally impossible to get bored. There’s rock climbing, zip lining, a mega slide that drops you ten whole stories, wild water slides and more. The image of old folks playing shuffleboard has long been shattered.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu CruiseBut that’s not all of it. Want to go surfing? Check out the FlowRider. It’s basically a wave machine on steroids. In particular, it offers the fun of surfing and/or boogie boarding right there on the ship, without having to worry about massive wipeouts. And it’s 100 % shark-free as well.

Oh, and by the way, almost everything is included. I’m talking about entertainment, food,
the sports activities mentioned above, full gym, lodging, transportation from port to port, and more. There are a few extras available for purchase, but all your necessities are completely taken care of.

Who Can Come?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu CruiseThe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise is open to everyone. People from early white all the way through black belt can participate. Furthermore, families are also welcome as well as solo travelers, groups of friends, youth participants, men; women, and even people who don’t intend to train. For those looking to skip the training, there’s a reduced rate to enjoy a great experience. And, there will be PLENTY for everybody to do on and off the ship. In addition to all the activities mentioned above, there is a relaxing spa that offers professional services. This includes facials, hair and nail treatments, hot stone massages, and several other experiences to make you feel like you are at a fabulous spa retreat.

But What About The Kids?

Kids are more than welcome to join in training. For those that haven’t yet caught the BJJ
bug, Royal Caribbean’s “Harmony of the Seas” has a complete youth program. There are daily activities to keep them busy while you enjoy your training. These include movies, games, art projects, ping pong tournaments, and more. As expected, you’ll also want to spend time with the little ones as well. In that sense, there is an arcade aboard, a merry go round, and of course, kids love the flow rider, rock climbing wall, and zip line as well.

Speaking of Zip Lines, one of the destinations features the longest over-water zip line in
the world. It’s called “Dragon’s Breath” and it is the daredevil’s dream. Video of it can be seen on MMA Travel Adventures website and Facebook page. There is never a shortage of activities for any cruiser.

Beautiful Ports of Call

The ship will be heading to several breathtaking destinations including San Juan, Puerto Rico, Labadee, Haiti, and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Puerto Rico is a great destination for several reasons. The nature it features is beyond
belief. Regarding this, one of the key offerings of this island paradise is El Yunque, a rainforest and national park. It boasts waterfalls, scenic views, and lush landscaping. If libations are more your speed, the Bacardi rum factory has just what you need. There you will find historical tours, a waterfront bar pavilion, and even rum tastings.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu CruiseAt the same time, Puerto Rico also has the standard offerings of traditional local foods to try such as habichuelas, mofongo, flan, and tostones. You can enjoy great shopping and amazing historical sites including the largest Spanish built forts in the New World.

Another outstanding destination, Labadee, Haiti is owned by Royal Caribbean cruise
lines. Guests of the cruise line have exclusive use of the facilities. Cabanas, kayaks, snorkeling gear, wave runners, paddle boards, and more are available to rent. Furthermore, a complimentary buffet lunch is provided on the island. Labadee’s biggest claim to fame is the aforementioned longest over-water zipline in the world. Guests of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise 2019 have the option to book this zip line as an excursion. All those days ziplining on the ship are sure to prepare you for this adventure.

The half Dutch and half French Island of St. Maarten/St. Martin offers participants the
unique experience of visiting two countries on the same island. Miles of shopping and
restaurants are just off the pier. Moreover, St. Maarten features some of the most spectacular underwater experiences such as Sea Trek, St. Maarten. This incredible excursion takes you twenty feet below the surface of the water with no need for diving certification. You can get a picture with live sea urchin, a close-up view of lobsters, and even scope out some interesting treasures that surely didn’t get there naturally.

The Food And Entertainment

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu CruiseI can’t write an entire article about a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu cruise and not include information on the insane cuisine offerings. On that note, the food on this ship is absolutely exquisite. It is also available 24 hours a day. There are specialty restaurants that offer sushi, teppanyaki, and even the unique magical dining experience of the ships Wonderland restaurant. The specialty restaurants charge a nominal fee but offer great experiences. However, the majority of the food aboard is included in the cost of your cruise and is spectacularly crafted.

Some of the dinner choices in the free main dining room include Waldorf Salad, Escargots a la Bourguignonne, Slow Roasted Prime Rib, and Horseradish Crusted Salmon.

You already know about the ship’s main attractions, but “Harmony of the Seas” is one of the only ships at sea to feature an aqua theater. This is where they put on their nightly water show entitled The Fine Line. No spoilers here, but it is an amazing must see show featuring acrobatics, high dives, and other experiences you don’t want to miss!

How to secure a spot

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu CruiseMMA Travel has amazing rates for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cruise that beat the pricing of other events hands down. If you’re afraid you can’t book because you don’t have anybody to go with, don’t worry. Solo travelers can take advantage of the option to book a room with other solo travelers. First Review: John Danaher Gi DVD Instructional “Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes”

GO Further Faster Pin Escapes And Turtle Escapes John Danaher Gi DVD Instructional FULL Review

As much as John Danaher kept things to himself for the past couple of decades, he is now more than making up for it. So far, in less than a year’s time, he managed to record an incredible 6 part DVD instructional series. Each part of his “Enter The System” series revolves around a key move or position that gave birth to a complete system. So far, we got a total of six instructional, the last of which was the “Armbar” set. The fact that Danaher covered all his No-Gi systems in around 60 hours of material means we’re probably set for life. However, much to the joy of the entire BJJ community, Danaher is far from done. His next project is going to be a bit different, though – a John Danaher Gi DVD instructional.

While many might find a Danaher Gi DVD instructional a bit strange, the fact is that he is as accomplished in the Gi as he is without it. The main thing that separates John Danaher from others is how he teaches. Whether it is his mind, his scientific approach or something else, he is an unbelievable teacher. In fact, he is arguably the best Jiu-Jitsu teacher alive today. In those terms, he most definitely deserves the title of Professor. I dare you to watch over a couple of hours of any of his work and come out with at least a fundamental understanding of what Danaher was talking about. It’s not easy, and that was in No-Gi. Expect a lot more details and invisible Jiu-Jitsu in his upcoming Gi instructionals. I guess Danaher decided it is time to change the world of Gi Jiu-Jitsu as well.

John Danaher In The Gi

As a Renzo Gracie black belt, John Danaher is more than experienced in the Gi. His love of No-Gi, and inherently, rashguards, usually paints him as a No-Gi only guy. Yet, the New Zealander is so much more than that.

As a teacher, John came to the forefront thanks to Renzo Gracie’s MMA duties. Back when he was setting Pride alight, Renzo did not have time to fully dedicate to his academy in NYC. Instead, the mantle of the instructor came down to Matt Serra. Since Matt was also an important part of Renzo’s team, and later an MMA fighter himself, this meant he couldn’t get to also teach every class. Their solution was John Danaher. Since he was already on the mats for a better portion of the day, he got the nod to start teaching. This was back when John was a purple belt.

Meticulous as he is, John took his new responsibility very seriously. One might argue that he even took it too seriously. Lucky for us. Since e was never going to compete much with the array of injuries he collected over the years, John dedicated himself to teaching. He approached it with the same passion and dedication that kept him on the mats all day every day. Not surprisingly, his efforts transformed him into one of the most sought after coaches of today.

This also meant that covering the classes in the whole academy made him great at everything. No-Gi classes, Gi classes, fundamental classes, competition preparation, kids classes. You name it, and John has a system for it. Now, it is time to learn the secrets of the Gi via the “Go Further Faster” John Danaher Gi DVD instructional series.

“Go Further Faster” – The Danaher Gi DVD Instructional Series

The unique way in which Danaher approaches Jiu-Jitsu is what makes him different than others. With his No-Gi series, his goal was to make people think differently, rather than just repeat moves. As far as some people are concerned, he was definitely successful. For others, he provided a much-needed source of basic techniques that’ll allow people to understand BJJ later on.

The “Go Further Faster” John Danaher Gi DVD instructional is no different from the ‘Enter The System” series. Technical and conceptual Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu differences aside, qhat we get are core fundamentals once again. Something similar to this is bound to be at the very foundations of his Gi system, dubbed “Go Further Faster”. In that sense, Danaher is probably going to cover the goals of training in the Gi, the central problems we face and subsequent solutions. However, his very first DVD of the series is all about escapes. His solutions usually come as ideas on how to achieve your goals by solving the central problems.

As far as subjects of his upcoming instructionals go, the first one centers around pin escapes and the turtle position. To be precise, he covers the various ways in which you can get out of the turtle position. His instructional organization remains the same, and once again, Danaher delivers over 10 hours of premium quality video material.  Knowing how big Danaher is on systems, we can expect him to touch on just about every fundamental concept of BJJ in the future. Subsequently, during the following year or so, we can expect a lot more pieces of the puzzle. However, Danaher doesn’t reveal the subjects of future DVDs, so we can only guess what he’s about to deliver!

“Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes” DVD Review

The first installment of the “Go Further Faster” John Danaher Gi DVD Instructional series has just been released. We had the option to take a sneak peek just before the official release, so we had enough time to do an in-depth review. Given the rate of release we saw with the “Enter the System” DVD series, we can expect a lot more volumes in teh near future. In fact, Danaher is probably already filming the next segment of his new Gi DVD series. The total number of DVDs that he intends to release, though, remains a mystery.

So far, Danaher has a system for delivering digital information, much like for everything else he does. What we know is that he favors 8 part series, with each volume about an hours length. While some may be slightly shorter, there’s always a volume or two that runs nearer to the 2-hour mark. All in all, around 10 hours of material per DVD set is Danaher’s norm for now. The “Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes 7 turtle Escapes” DVD runs at just above 10 hours.

As far as material and delivery are concerned, Danahar has proven to be extremely versatile. So far, he provided content specifically tailored to the subject he is covering. For example, he included narrated rolls in his Kimura series. The first John Danaher GI DVD Instructional follows a unique pattern as well. You’ll notice that Danaher uses two major principles throughout – knee escapes and elbows escapes. The instructional is organized in sections that address escaping certain positions. Within each segment, the escapes are numbered rather than having distinct names. This makes them really easy to remember and organize. IN fact, let’s go into the DVD play by play:

VOLUME 1 – Essentials Of BJJ Escapes

As with every one of his DVDs that came before, the first Danaher Gi DVD Instructional starts off at the very beginning. If you’re looking for escapes right off the get go you won’t find many. The first volume is all about theory and the philosophy of pin escapes. Dahaner starts by going over most escapes and pointing out areas of interest. He also shares his philosophy of defense in Jiu-Jitsu, which, as always, is mesmerizing.

From a specific standpoint, he begins by dissecting pins. As usual, there’s a system to it all. First up is the goal of pin escapes, then, it is the structure of pins themselves, and finally, modes of getting out. There’s a concept in there that was particularly interesting for me called “minimal escapes”. If you’re a highly technical grappler you’ll appreciate this section very much.

The final third of the first volume goes into the area of a specific movement. As you know, there’s no escaping without precise and deliberate movement. This includes common BJJ drills the likes of bridging, shrimping, hip heisting, spinning, rolling and sitting up. OF course, it wouldn’t be a Danaher DVD if there weren’t directions on how they all tie together to work as an unstoppable escape system.

VOLUME 2 – Escaping Mount

The mount is one of the most difficult positions to escape in general. However, when you’re up against someone that specializes in the mount, it is a whole new world of pain. While there are many techniques and moves for getting out of the mount, most of them usually do not yield effective and complete results. This part of the “Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes” DVD starts with bridges. The famous BJJ “Upa” is at the center of this volume, appearing in about half of the chapters.

Review: GO Further Faster Pin Escapes And Turtle Escapes John Danaher Gi DVD InstructionalAs expected, Danaher’s take on bridging is a bit different than what most others know. It is also far more effective and eye-opening. In fact, Danaher’s bridge-based mount escape system has 5 components in total. That makes it aa sub-system, as Danaher likes to call them, which fits within a larger system. And the second part of that large mount escape system are elbow escapes.

Elbow escapes from the mount are my personal preferred way of getting out. In certain cases, they do work great with bridges, though. Danaher is a master of connecting the dots, and he does just that in this volume. However, he covers no less than 7 different elbow escapes against the mount. OF course, there’s a lot of conceptual and theoretical talk with integral key points along the way.

VOLUME 3 – Dealing With Side Control (Elbow Escapes)

While the mount is obviously a difficult position to escape, side control can often time cause a lot more frustration. People that know how to distribute weight and be heavy are impossible to shake off from top side control. Or at least they were before this Danaher Gi DVD instructional came out. However, before we get into those, there are a few more mount escapes taht Danaher couldn’t fit in the previous volume. They are based on a very basic concept – the ankle trap, but from a completely different angle than what we’re all used to. At the very end, there’s a section that covers the dangers of opening the back when escaping mount that’s nothing short of brilliant.

The side control escapes start with elbow escapes. By now, Danaher’s elbow escaping concepts are clear and he doesn’t spend much time going over them again. he does, however, refer to them at all times, so at times, you’ll need to go back to the first DVD and repeat them. That said, after a short introduction, 7 more elbow escapes follow, providing you with the first half of an incredible side control escape system.

VOLUME 4 – Dealing With Side Control (Knee Escapes)

The second part of the side control escape system focuses on using knee escapes rather than elbow escapes. As we know, Danaher likes to make things unfair, i.e. use strong body parts against weaker ones. So far, he made it clear that the legs are our strongest body parts. Now, Danaher introduces them to the escape system, providing more powerful defense options.

The entire fourth volume of this Danaher Gi DVD instructional covers nothing but knee escapes. After the mandatory introduction to the specific movements and technical aspects, Danaher goes into the various way that you can use your knees to frame and make space. there are 10 chapters in total, each covering slightly different ways of using your knees to get out of side control once and for all. This is one of the most technical chapters in this DVD, but also one of the most packed ones when it comes to information.

VOLUME 5 – General Theory Of Framing And Space

After the highly technical knee escape volume, Danaher goes into the realm of theory once again. This time, though, it is framing that gets deconstructed and analyzed. To tell you the truth, I couldn’t wait to get to this part when I first got my hands on the “Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes” DVD. However, since it is a bad idea to jump through John Danaher BJJ instructionals, I had to wait, And it was worth it!

GO Further Faster Pin Escapes And Turtle Escapes John Danaher Gi DVD InstructionalDanaher’s take on what frames are, how you need to use them and how to make them impossible to break is, as always, one of a kind. The general theory of framing and space has three distinct parts that have to work in unison for it to be effective. There are also some frame examples included, in the form of the three most important bottom side control framing configurations.

Finally, there are a further few knee escapes bringing everything together. Once again, the position you’re fighting against is side control. This time though, each of them leads into a different position, all fo them being primed for attack. They include the back, the half and butterfly guards and teh full guard. There’s hardly anyone out there that can make theory and practice work together as well as Danaher can.

VOLUME 6 – How Pin Escapes Work

If volume four was the most technical volume, then this one is the most conceptual one. It covers plenty of different situations, this time centered around specific movement patterns. The opening few chapters are all about the high leg escapes from different pins. The ankle traps we saw in the mount escapes portion feature again as well. This time, though, it’s more from a conceptual standpoint that makes them useful from plenty of different positions.

There are also some new concepts in here that put to use some of the movements we saw in the first volume of the instructional. Shoulder rolls and spinning escapes are examples of those. Danaher has examples of how both work in different situations, including side control and mount. The volume also spends a lot of time analyzing different pins. That analysis includes angles of knee entries and crucial insertion points. There’s also a chapter hidden in there that contains the single most important concept for escaping bottom positions in Jiu-Jitsu.

VOLUME 7 – North-South Solutions

If there’s one position in BJJ everyone hates to get trapped in, it has to be the North-South position. it is not as secure as the mount, or back control, but it is far more annoying than both. Escapes from the position are plentiful, yet not many leads into spots that you can use to actually gain the upper hand.

The system here starts with side pin escapes. There’s a clear distinction between side pins and side control though, Side pins usually open up different positions, liek side control and North-South. Danaher offers escapes from those transitional positions before he touches on the subject of North-South itself. One great example of a side pin is knee on belly, and there’s an equally great concept for rendering the position completely powerless.

The North-South escape system from this volume of the first Danaher GI DVD instructional starts with an overview that’s an introduction to the directions of escape. In case you’re wondering, there are three different directions for escaping the North-South. They all depend on where the opponent’s arms are, and Danaher offers solutions for all of them: the double over, double under and over under.

VOLUME 8 – Getting Out Of Back Control

Finally, the pièce de résistance. The closing volume of the “Go Further Faster – Pin Escapes & Turtle Escapes” John Danaher Gi DVD instructional is all about getting out of back control. having your back taken is close to being beaten as you can get in BJJ without actually having to concede defeat. Well, back control is going to be much less of a problem once you understand Danaher’s philosophy of dealing with it.

This volume has two distinct parts. the first one addresses rear mount escapes and the second covers turtle escapes. The rear mount portion focuses on elbow escapes as teh main concept. While the inner workings of elbow escapes are clear by now, there’s a new component to it here – sliding. It actually makes a lot of sense and works liek a charm! Turtle escapes are more versatile and use two primary concepts – the shoudler roll and the inside leg escape. Which one you use depends solely on whether or not the opponent has a seatbelt grip on or not.

Final Thoughts

As far as the subject matter of the first installment of the John Danaher Gi DVD Instructional Series goes, blue belts will be happier than anyone. After all, the blue belt is the period when escaping and surviving is the main area of focus. Still, all joking aside, everyone will benefit greatly from this particular DVD. There are concepts and theories in there that even world champion black belts do not know or understand. Once again, Danaher succeeds at delivering a groundbreaking DVD instructional without any flaws!

The Litvinov Grappling Workout – Are You Strong Enough?

The Litvinov Grappling Workout

Have you ever heard of Sergey Litvinov? How about the Litvinov workout? Unless you’re a competitive hammer thrower on top of training grappling, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. Bear with me for a minute. Litvinov was an Olympic and world champion in athletics, and also the person responsible for one of the most brutal workouts you’ll ever do. Whether you’re preparing yourself for hammer throwing, a marathon, a BJJ tournament or just want to be a badass, try doing what he did. And worry not when you come up short – I did as well. That’s why today we’ll offer a few variations to the original Litvinov workout, making it more of a grappling workout to improve strength and conditioning really fast! If you’re not of the mentally strong variety, you’re better off closing this tab right now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

In strength an conditioning, much like in Jiu-Jitsu, it is easy to get lost. There’s so much conflicting material on what to do and not do, that you end up confused. Since I find the Occam’s razor approach to be one that really helps in BJJ, I also gave it a try in the realm of physical preparation. The result was the Litvinov workout. The trouble with it is that it seems very easy when you’re reading it on the screen. Giving it a try is a whole different animal, though. What you get with this grappling workout is a full body blast from every aspect. You train the full body, you train strength, you get conditioning and you get to work on your mental toughness. With a few tweaks, you can even use it to cut weight, or perhaps even build some muscle.

Sergey Litvinov

Sergey Litvinov, as we mentioned was an Olympic champion hammer thrower. He competed under the banner of the former Soviet Union. He won a silver medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics and a gold one at the 1988 Olympics. Also a multiple times world champion, the elite hammer thrower was not just known for his throwing accomplishments. At 5’11” and 234 lbs he was an impressive specimen, with extraordinary levels of strength.

Sergey LitvinovOn top of winning multiple different titles, Litvinov also managed to set three world records in the process. In his discipline of hammer throwing the Russian is a real legend. However, his legacy extends to much more than just his athletic discipline. The way he trained while getting ready for competition resulted in one of the most brutal workouts ever, a workout that’s named after him.

What Litvinov did, back in his glory days, was redefine strength and conditioning. In order for someone to be efficient at throwing a hammer, they need strength and, in particular, power. While technical training is, of course, the priority, specific conditioning needs to be factored in as well. This is where Litvinov went simple but hard, with a workout that’s all about intensity. As you’ll see, what he did is the perfect grappling workout, and will get you lean, strong and improve your gas tank.

Sergey Litvinov died less than a year ago, on the 18th of February 2018.

The Original Litvinov

The original workout that Sergey Litvinov did was all about increasing strength and power. the “side effects” of leaning out, dropping fat and increasing conditioning didn’t seem to be high on his priority list. To this day, the original Litvinov workout is an effective and brutal man maker.

What Litvinov did was get a squat rack on the athletic track. He then went for a set of front squats, doing 8 reps total. Immediately after the last rep, he racked the weight as fast as possible and went for a 400-meter sprint. Easy, right? Not so fast. First thing first, Litvinov did 8 reps of front squats with 405 lbs. Yes, you read that right, 405 lbs for 8 reps. He then went on to sprint the 400 meters with maximum, lung-busting intensity. Still seems easy? Litvinov did this combination 3 total times, resting to recovery between rounds.

As you can see, the workout is simple. it is also very fast – it’ll rarely take you more than 20 minutes, including warming up. However, this workout is going to leave you gasping for air and with aches, all over your body. As a grappling workout, it is absolutely perfect, give the front loading on the strength exercise. However, there are a few changes to the workout you can do to either target more grappling specific strength or more conditioning if you’re cutting weight.

The Litvinov Grappling Workout Challenge

In order to use the Litvinov for grappling, you can change several parameters. First up, the rhythm and order of the workout are not up for debate. First, you do a heavy exercise and then you go all out, the full intensity with a max effort conditioning exercise/movement. The choice of exercises is variable, but you’re still restricted to a certain style of exercises. For example, biceps curls won’t do the trick. In order to keep you honest on the conditioning part, we also filtered a few exercises that fit the bill. We did this to stop you from cheating by just jumping on an elliptical to pedal at what you consider to be “high intensity”.

Want to become huge very fast? Consider learning how from a man who has achieved it. Gordon Ryan changed his physique in a manner of months. The “King” takes you through his weight gaining, weight cutting and nutrition regiment in his “Getting Swole As A Grappler” bundle, that includes 3 DVDs and an E-book. Check it out!

In general, the workout is not effective unless you’re contemplating suicide by the end of it. It will also save you time and bring you the best athletic benefits ever! One major problem is often the original choice of exercises. There are not many stadiums that feature a squat rack near their track. The same goes for any place where you can hit a 400-meter run. On the other hand, only a handful of training facilities have sufficient length for sprinting. What you can do though, is choose a different lift, one that doesn’t require a rack, or chooses a different conditioning tool, one easily accessible in a commercial gym. We’ll go ever a possible option for an intense and easy to access grappling workout below.

Part 1 – Strength

The first part of the workout is all about lifting a heavyweight. Again, overhead presses won’t do the trick. BOSU ball pushups with a weighted backpack do not count either. Actually, any kind of isolation movement (and yes, this includes your favorite bench press) is off limits. The only exercises worth considering are multi-joint exercises done with a heavyweight! A barbell also has priority over any other kind of training equipment. While dumbbells and kettlebells are also a possibility, machine exercises or band/cables are a great way to mess up the Litvinov.

So, the only things worth considering are the following:

  • Full clean and press
  • Full clean and jerk
  • Deadlift
  • Front squat
  • Overhead squat
  • Full snatch

Once again, the barbell is your best friend here. The only limiting factor is your mobility and personal restrictions. For example, if you have tight shoulders, do not go for overhead squats. Next, use a barbell-only lift like a deadlift or snatch/clean and press if you do not have access to a squat rack. And finally, consider doing the Olympic style lifts (clean and press/jerk, snatch) with heavy dumbbells or kettlebells. As you can see the main topic here is to go heavy. Since the norm is 8 reps, you should choose a weight near your 10 rep maximum.

There’s also the options of going for heavy kettlebell swings but in a different rep range. If you’re doing anything less than thirty, you’re doing it wrong.

Part 2 – Conditioning

For the second part, which is the conditioning movement or exercise, your options are much more limited. This is only because it is really easy to cheat on it and render the complete workout ineffective. This usually leads to labeling this grappling workout as a miss, and claiming it doesn’t work. It won’t if you won’t, it is as simple as that.

Sprints, of course, are the best full body high-intensity exercise you can do. Yet, due to the obvious logistical difficulties, when training indoors, you need other options. A great thing to consider for both indoor and outdoor training are sleds. Load up a sled with a challenging weight, and give it you’re all. Pull or push, it doesn’t matter as long as you do it with maximal intensity. There’s also another exercise everyone loves to hate – burpees. If you’re really in a tight spot (literally), simply rack the weight and go straight to the ground. The rules here are to do the burpees as fast ad explosively as possible, aiming for maximal height with every jump at the end. 10 burpees like this are great, and 15 with you going completely down (i.e. including a pushup) is near perfect!

Or consider this simple variation – a heavy kettlebell and a hill to sprint up. Funny how minimal equipment and time can give you one of the best grappling workouts of all times!

Intensity And Programming

With intensity, there’s only one thing to remember – go all out. You’\re only doing 3 sets of the two exercises anyway. The Litvinov grappling workout leaves no space for fumbling around with your phone. Get in, warm up, hit the weights and the high-intensity cardio, wish you were dead and go to sleep. Done and dusted in less than 20 minutes, which is perfect for people training Jiu-Jitsu a few times a week.

Litvinov Grappling Workout

Also of the utmost importance is not to rest at all between the exercises. The reason back squats are not good for this is that they take too much time to rack the weight. Lift, drop the weights and go straight into a sprint, grab a sled or drop for burpees. Do not even think about stopping there needs to be no time spent in transition between the two exercises. Once you’re done with the conditioning portion, rest 3-5 minutes, or however long you need to recover for another set.

Litvinov Prowler Exercise

Finally, you should consider hitting Litvinovs no more than three times a week, preferably on non-BJJ days. Two days a week is what works best for me. If you’re dead set on doing a Litvinov on a grappling training day, do it after grappling, preferably at the tail end of the day. That said, 4-6 weeks of this before a competition will have you tearing people apart. The beautiful thing is that you can stick with the same exercises while changing the weight or intensity. Or, you could switch the exercises up after a couple of months. Whatever you do, make sure you do exercises you know well or you won’t be able to go all out.

The Benefits

IF it is not apparent by now, the Litvinov is the perfect grappling workout because it offers you the silver bullet everyone is looking for. You get a great full body workout, completely transferable to grappling. You also get to finish in less than 20 minutes. The most incredible thing is that you get to train both strength and conditioning in a progressive manner in the same workout, with just two exercises!

From a practical standpoint, apart from getting stronger and have a gas tank that lasts, you’ll also see changes in your body composition. You’ll most certainly lose fat, due to the high oxygen demands the body has for hours after completing the workout. You’ll also improve your lean muscle mass, contributing to easier weight cutting. Actually, if you leave your self a couple of months fro Litvinovs before a tournament you might end up extremely close to your target weight without even trying to cut. All the while, you’ll keep and perhaps even add a bit of muscle. It is the perfect grappling workout that everyone can do, practically anywhere.

We were already writing about the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu in THIS article.

It’s actually a fight between traditional Jiu-Jitsu and modern Jiu-Jitsu so let’s see what happens in this fight in a video below.

Old School BJJ vs. Modern Jiu-Jitsu – Which Do You Prefer?

Fabricio Werdum Helps Save Two Drowning Teens At The Beach

Fabricio Werdum Saving lives of two teens

You might love him or hate him, support him or not but Fabricio Werdum, former UFC champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion is saving lives. Today he saved two young lives of two teens on a beach near his home in California.

No matter of his struggle with doping problems today he proved he’s the real hero.

Ag Fight was the first to report the incident:

“We had been on the beach for almost an hour. When we saw the fireman’s car, the car stopped in front of us. I said I was going to help and Karine (wife) was in doubt because it was dangerous, but when I looked, they had two little heads in the sea shouting ‘help’. They were very far, about 70 meters in. When the lifeguard picked up the board alone, I took off my coat and ran off, “he recounted.

“After a brief conversation with the local security official, Werdum took a float and set off for the sea, where he rescued the drowning boy, while the young woman was taken off by the lifeboat. After the moment of heroism, the heavyweight was still recognized by some bathers and received several compliments and greetings from those present.“I took the orange buoy, I crossed it in the chest and I arrived with him, a little ahead still. I told him to get the girl, who was screaming a lot, and I got the boy, who was soft already. I was able to catch him and we went towards (the beach). Then, on the border, a gentleman helped me. (…) The waves were large, the guy sank some three times. Wow, the heart was the million, it’s an extreme situation, the heart goes to a million. It’s worse than fighting. It does not even come close, “concluded the fighter.”

Crazy BJJ Submissions – Foot Chokes And Armlocks

Foot Chokes Crazy BJJ Submissions

Crazy BJJ Submissions! Who doesn’t love them? From flying submissions like armbars and triangles to intricate stuff like inside heel hooks from the Tuck position. There’s nothing that you can’t do in BJJ if you set your mind to it and learn how to do it. The thing with crazy BJJ submissions is what you consider to be crazy. This, as you’ll see, tends to change as you progress through your Jiu-Jitsu journey. The one unifying characteristic of unorthodox submissions is the fact that they’re unexpected and pretty hard to escape once they’re on. Today’s selection of techniques is going to be somewhat surprising, and crazy enough to fall under this category of submissions.

The moves people tend to think of as crazy BJJ submissions are definitely not set in stone. While a beginner might be more impressed with a flying submission, a purple belt is more likely to consider rolling kneebars as crazy BJJ submission attempts. Black belts, or more senior grapplers, on the other hand, are more likely to fancy sneaky submissions as crazy ones. To that extent, sneaky submissions involving unusual body parts for a direct or indirect finish are most definitely favorites of more experienced and/or older/injured grapplers. Today,s unexpected boy part is the foot, and we’ll be looking at how to hit submissions by introducing your feet into the mix.

If you’re lacking submission options in your game then you have a very simple solution readily available. Simply acquire a certain Bernardo Faria video instructional by the name of “High Percentage Submissions”. This DVD set will fix all your submission issues and offer you a much wider range of attacks.

Crazy BJJ Submissions

So what’s the point of going for any of the moves we consider crazy BJJ submissions? Apart from beginners, who might find the attractive aspect of these kinds of moves, more experience grapplers like them because of efficiency. Namely, all these submissions work just as well, if not better, than regular ones. All that it takes is to find a way to incorporate them into your usual game plan, and you’ll have a great secret weapon!

The first main benefit of going for things on the crazier side of BJJ is that they might work. While crazy BJJ submissions rarely fall in the high-percentage category, they still tend to work very often. The reason for this is the element of surprise. Who would expect you to use a foot to choke them while you’re working on another submission? This brings us to yet another great benefit – easy setups. Sneaky moves usually work as blitz moves, which means they’re integrated into the setups of techniques you’re already using. So no need to learn brand new complicated mechanics.

Furthermore, there’s one more advantage that sneaky and crazy moves offer. They can act as “openers” against really defensive or tough opponents. With people that expect regular attacks, a crazy move might get them panicking, and therefore making mistakes. It is not unusual for crazy BJJ submissions to open up other submissions, transitions, or positional attacks.

Using The Feet To Your Advantage

The feet are not a common body part when we think of submissions. Well, at least when we think of executing them on other body parts. While leg submissions like triangle chokes or Omoplatas are pretty much the norm, we rarely use the feet to elicit a tap. This is exactly what makes them perfect for surprising, crazy BJJ submissions. Who would expect you to use your foot to choke them?

The feet are actually very versatile tools that are severely underrated in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It doesn’t take much foot flexibility to choke someone, provided you’re in the correct position. Simply put, as long as you have mobile hips, you’ll be efficient at finishing people with the help of your feet. To that extent, most submissions that involve the feet, directly or indirectly are chokes. How many foot-based chokes can you name off the top of your head right now? How about situations where using a foot proves pivotal in finishing a move?

It is about time you refresh and expand your knowledge on the subject of sneaky submissions with the feet. To make things easier to organize, we have two distinct categories – direct submissions and indirect ones.

Direct Foot Attacks

Crazy BJJ Submissions Foot Choke First up, the foot finish that most of the grappling world is aware of, yet only a handful use. The culprit behind this one is Keenan Cornelius, a tireless innovator and fan of the sneaky stuff. His foot choke from the bottom has only one drawback – t requires a Gi to work. For the first of our crazy BJJ submissions today, you’ll start from z-guard. The goal is to place two grips on each collar of the opponent’s Gi. From there, all it takes is to place the side of your knee shield foot directly on the opponent’s throat. Pull with the arms as you push with the edge of the foot on the throat for a brutal air choke.

Crazy BJJ Submissions Foot Choke Next up, an Eddie Bravo masterpiece. While we all know and can’t do the Gogoplata from the guard, there’s always a better way to hunt for it. This is, arguably, the most famous foot choke in BJJ. This time, however, you’ll go for the Gogoplata from the mount. All it takes is to have one arm trapped, like for an Omoplata. From there, you can transfer the foot over the opponent’s face quite easily. The crucial finishing detail is to hug the head with both arms and fall to the side of your choking leg. No escape from there and finishing is a breeze.

Crazy BJJ Submissions Foot Chokes Finally, there’s the armbar choke. This one works like a charm from open guard and is a great way to at least get an armbar. With two sleeve grips, simply place a leg across the opponent’s chest, hooking the foot at their neck. From there, pull the opposite side arm in for an armbar. As you cross your legs, you’ll end up choking your opponent first, and have the armbar as a backup!

Need A Helping Foot?

Crazy BJJ Submissions Foot Lapel Choke Finally a couple of options to finish regular submissions crazily. One great option is to use your foto to finish a collar choke from the back. Let’s say you have a collar choke in, but you lack the leverage to finish. Whenever you’re lying on the strong side of the back mount, you’ll have an issue with re-adjusting your grip because the opponent is on your arm. So, instead of bailing, use your foot to help you finish instead. First, release the lapel on the top side and grab it with your arm, the lower – the better. Next, use your top foot to place downward pressure on that same lapel. The direction of pressure should be towards your belt and backward. This takes all slack away from and amplifies the collar choke you’re trying to get.

Crazy BJJ Submissions Foot Choke ArmbarAnd, at the very end, there’s the “douchebag”. Another one of Eddie Bravo’s crazy inventions, this one definitely merits being in the crazy BJJ submissions category. IT starts from the spider web position when you’re battling to get an armbar. Opponents tend t be really stubborn from here, especially if they have a Gi on. So, in order to break their resistance, you’re going to use an unusual move. All it takes is to lift the leg you have over their head and place the outer edge of the foot on their throat. Now just push and you’ll get the armbar straight away. Or, if the opponent is unusually stubborn, they’ll tap to the same choke that Keenan likes.

Chael Sonnen DVD Review: Gangster Grappling

Chael Sonnen DVD Gangster Grappling Review

Chael “The American Gangster” Sonnen is one of the most entertaining characters in the fight game. The original shit-talker made a name for himself in the UFC, as much with his quick wit as he did with fighting. Even then, he was predominantly a grappler, using high-level wrestling to earn himself a 31-16 record. On top of his impressive grappling skills, Chael has one of the quickest minds in the game as well. He is not just great at taunting opponents, but also an outstanding martial arts teacher. While not something previously associated with Sonnen, this came to light during his time as a coach on the 17 seasons of the Ultimate Fighter. Now, all his teaching skills are available for everyone, in the form of a grappling exclusive Chael Sonnen DVD. Ladies and gentlemen, the  “Gangster Grappling” DVD set is out and about!

Lately, BJJ instructional DVDs have become the number one learning tool outside of regular  Jiu-JItsu classes. Understandably, everyone that has the means to record and release a DVD (or a bunch of them) did. The trouble is that there are now so many instructionals available that there’s no way to go through them all. This sheer number of them also brings quality in question. In terms of quality, I mean the quality of teaching, quality of the DVD curriculum, production quality and value for your money. Not many DVD instructionals can really stand up to those standards. The ‘Gangster grappling” Chael Sonnen DVD is one that not only fulfills them all but surpasses most of them as well! We got our hands on it and tried to contain our excitement long enough to put together a complete, chapter-by-chapter review.

The Gangster Grappler

First, a few words on the man himself, Chael Sonnen. The “American Gangster” is one of the most charismatic and intriguing characters in the world of grappling and MMA. Born in 1977 in West Linn, Oregon, Sonnen got involved with wrestling in high school. When he got to university the All-American took wrestling up a notch becoming a fearsome grappler. His style of choice was Greco-Roman wrestling, which became an unshakable foundation for all his future fighting exploits.

Chael Sonnen DVDSonnen actually considered professional wrestling before opting for MMA. At the age of 19, Sonnen made his MMA debut in Vancouver, coming out of it with a victory. From there on, he managed to fight himself to a UFC contract in the fairly early days of UFC 55. After 3 fights he was released, switching to World Extreme Cage fighting before getting back to the UFC. Some legendary fights soon followed, most notably a submission win over Demian Maia and, later, Brian Stann, as well as THAT first fight with Anderson Silva.

AS his UFC career took off, Sonnen ended up coaching against Jon Jones in the Ultimate Fighter 17, where his team won, but he eventually lost to Jones. He also appeared on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 show, coaching against Wanderlei Silva. Their fight never materialized, though, and Sonnen retired from professional MMA. After a short while, he made comeback, this time under the Bellator banner. Here, he managed to beat contemporaries like Wanderlei Silva and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. He also beat BJJ legend Leo Vieira in the 2017 edition of ADCC.

Just recently, Sonnen was promoted to a BJJ black belt by Fabiano Scherner. With his focus on grappling recently, the “Gangster Grappling” Chael Sonnen DVD comes at a perfect time!

Submission Underground

In the summer of 2016, Sonnen started “Submission Underground” a submission-only event featuring huge names of both the grappling, and MMA world. The first ever event featured the likes of Benson Henderson, Jake Shields, Vinny Magalhaes, Kenny Florian, Felipe Costa, Ricco Rodriguez, Fabiano Sherner, and others. The event uses EBI-style rules with one main difference – all the matches take place in an MMA cage instead of an open-edge mat. No wonder the first-ever event was completely sold out.

Future installments saw many famous MMA and BJJ names like Jon Jones, Miesha Tate, Craig Jones, Garry Tonon, Jeff Glover, Chad Mendes and plenty of others. Chael himself acts as a commentator during the events, bringing all his understanding of grappling to the mix. After 6 events, though, Chael decided to change the format, introducing tag team grappling in an 8-men brown belt tournament, plus the mandatory big name super fights. The rules featured 8-minute bouts with the winner declared either by the most submissions or by crowd ovations. It was a fun experience by all means and an overall success.

Given all of Sonnen’s grappling exploits of late, it’s understandable that he also ventured into the grappling instructional scene. The inaugural Chael Sonnen DVD is everything you can expect from the “American Gangster”, and then some. A life-long wrestler, UFC veteran and a legitimate BJJ black belt’s bread and butter moves can only help you improve your grappling game, especially if you like to roll No-Gi.

Wrestling For BJJ

As expected, wrestling principles feature a lot in the “Gangster Grappling” Chael Sonnen DVD. His Greco-Roman skills, coupled with his knowledge as a black belt really do provide him with an extremely efficient grappling style. As a side note, Chael’s BJJ exploits are actually mostly in the Gi, giving him a broad perspective over grappling. After all, Fabiano Scherner is a Gracie Barra instructor, emphasizing Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

The reason wrestlers are so effective in BJJ and MMA is due to mostly three things. The first one is how efficient and versatile wrestlers are on their feet. There’s no doubt that people with solid wrestling power through their opponents with ease at BJJ tournaments, regardless of belt level. On top of that, wrestlers have an immense base and vast experience at controlling top positions. When a wrestler has you in a pin, you’ll struggle to regain movement for sure. However, even if you get some space back, sweeping a wrestler is next to impossible, courtesy of their base and posture. Finally, there’s’ the mindset. Wrestlers are not only relentless but also view grappling from a very different perspective from Jiu-Jitsu athletes.

Sprinkling in wrestling experiences, strategies, principles, and moves to a solid BJJ game allows Chael to present you with a very effective grappling style. Furthermore, Chael was never a catch wrestler, meaning no one-off wacky submissions in this Chael Sonnen DVD. Everything is methodical, meticulous and proven to work. All in all, it is a highlight of wrestling moves for BJJ integrated with some of the most effective Jiu-Jitsu techniques. The perfect blend.

Chael Sonnen DVD Review – Gangster Grappling

Finally, we get to the good part – the “Gangster Grappling” Chael Sonnen DVD set. What you get with it is a four-volume set of premiere grade grappling instructions. As expected, the instructional is a No-Gi one, giving its applicability in both BJJ dimensions.  The production is flawless, as is Chael’s presentation of the moves and techniques. The “American Gangster’s” teaching abilities are up there with the best of them. He can break a move down to it’s finest details, allowing you to understand both how it works, and why it works.

On the subject of contents, there are 10-12 chapters per volume, each lasting quite a bit, given Chael’s teaching style. The first DVD is all about submissions, mostly offensive but with a few defensive/counterattacking concepts as well. Volumes 2 and 3 focus on wrestlers’ bread and butter – the top game. Top positional controls, guard passing, submission attacks, and sweep prevention are all there. Finally, a Chael Sonnen DVD wouldn’t be complete without a look at takedown strategies. All in all, a complete product that ‘ll give you a real edge over everyone you meet rolling and competing.

PART 1

After the usual introduction, Chael kicks this DVD off from the 50/50 position. This is not the 50/50 guard we’re used to, but rather the wrestling over/under position.  From there, Sonnen demonstrates how to enter into a bunch of attacking sequences, depending on your opponent’s reactions.

In typical Chael Sonnen fashion, chokes make up a big part of the DVD set in general. In the first volume, it is all about front headlock strangles, particularly D’arces and guillotines. As I’ve stated on many occasions before, I’m a real fan of the D’arce choke. Any instructional on the subject instantly catches my attention. I can definitely confirm that Chael’s take on the D’arce is going to help you clear up a few kinks with it. The leg adjustment is a huge one, significantly increasing the trapping power of the position.  In terms of guillotine chokes, wrestlers always have a thing or two to add to what we already like doing. Chael is no different, offering cool guillotine finishing tips. Attack-wise, there’s also a great high-percentage sequence starting from the chest lock and ending with a rear-naked choke.

A very important aspect of this volume is the defensive aspects. Guillotine defenses are going to help you deter a lot of attacks by cutting them down in their root. There are also key details to dismantling and escaping the front headlock, thus taking away a very offensive weapon from your opponents.

PART 2

The whole point of this Chael Sonnen DVD is to teach you how to use wrestling techniques to dominate Jiu-Jitsu matches. The second volume clearly demonstrates this form the opening sequence, which is the hip Lift AKA Metzger, again from the 50/50 position. This is a really efficient takedown that’s perfect for BJJ as it is not something people expect. The DVD continues with takedown options in the form of trips.

The submissions portion of this second part starts with a Kimura setup from a pressure pass. A really cool move is the reverse head and arm choke, which ties into the Kimura attack, as it’s a great followup to a missed Kimura. There are also a few Americanas in there, as well as a new take on the can opener. Once again, most moves are shown as sequences, instead of one-off techniques with no context.

Finally, there are a few passes in this volume that is a great way to spice up your top game. Chael demonstrates a half guard pass, pressure passing, and some key mount details. A counter to the standard underhook from bottom half via a backstep concludes this volume.

PART 3

Chael Sonnen DVDPart 3 starts off with a real bang – leg locks. Despite training at Gracie Barra Chaelis no stranger to high-level leg locks. His take on the straight ankle lock and the outside heel hook from the “game over” position are more than useful. Plus, the whole sequence starts with opening your opponent’s closed guard. More guard passing follows, with the double under paving the way for Chael’s philosophy of setting up attacks while you’re passing.

The second portion of DVD number 3 switches focuses on takedowns, albeit this time form a defensive point of view. Once again, you won’t get just simple moves to stop someone’s takedowns, but rather complete multi-step systems that take every possible scenario into account. The real gem of this volume is in the defense to counter moves, like a guillotine that prevents an initial takedown attempt. This Chael Sonnen DVD will teach you not only to escape situations like this but to turn them to your advantage.

The volume ends in the same manner as it started, with a great chain that starts from the Collar tie position.

PART 4

As we reach the final part of the Gangster Grappling Chael Sonnen DVD, things come to the ground. Here. it is all about surviving from the turtle. Actually, it is more like thriving from there rather than just surviving. Multiple escape concepts, complete chains as well as reversals all feature here.

Submissions also pop up in this final volume of Chael’s inaugural grappling instructional. What you get are heel hooks and armbars both with unexpected and really effective setups. On top of it all, there’s a drill that helps you work on a major philosophy of Sonnen called attack re-attack. It is going to turn you into a real submission machine without having to change your style.

There is also a great way to defend and counter the double underhooks when standing. Clearing ties is also a subject Sonnen explores, offering you ways out of one of wrestling’s favorite attacking positions.

John Danaher DVD Review – TRIANGLES: Enter The System

John Danaher DVD Triangles

When the ‘Enter the System; Kimura” Danaher DVD came out last month I thought it was a great way for everyone’s favorite coach to round off a very productive year. Not surprisingly, I was wrong. Just when I thought Danaher was all done for 2018, he announced the release of the fifth John Danaher instructional DVD. Another one in the Enter The System series, of course, and one on a subject that nobody can ignore – triangle chokes. AS far as Christmas presents go, this is the ultimate option. Danaher just made Christmas easy for all the families and significant others of grapplers worldwide!

Enter The System: Triangle is the latest in an installment of John Danaher DVD instructionals that keep changing the landscape of Jiu-Jitsu. Many people thought that the inaugural leg lock DVD was all that Danaher would produce. Although it took a while, he got a second hit out as well – the back take series. From there on things sped up, and the Front Headlock, and just recently, the Kimura DVDs also “hit the shelves”. Now, Danaher makes it a perfect five, adding an integral part to his ever-growing BJJ DVD collection. And, of course, we’re all psyched about the contents! After all, Renzo’s black belt already proved he know just as much if not more, about every part of BJJ as he does about breaking legs.

The Most Recognizable BJJ Move

If you take a look at BJJ Academy logos, T-shirts and similar designs, you’re bound to recognize an obvious common thread. The shape of a triangle features very heavily in a large portion of BJJ logos. Regardless of affiliations, or the preference to train in a Gi or without it, the triangle is as much a symbol of BJ Jas the Shaka sign is.

John Danaher DVD TrianglesThe reasons for such extensive use of triangles are simple – they work. Not just that, but they work from the bottom, which is where BJJ brought the most innovation in the world of martial arts. The triangle choke is one of the most potent weapons that Brazilian Jiu-JItsu has to offer. It’s been around from day one and has proven to be effective in all avenues of combat. From sports BJJ to self-defense and even MMA, the triangle is a highly reliable technique.

As it is customary with the highest percentage Jiu-Jitsu moves, the triangle has undergone quite an evolution. Today, there are plenty of variation fo the strangle, all offering a high degree of effectiveness. It is no wonder that Danaher puts so much emphasis on them. They fit perfectly into his philosophy of systems and subsystems. For example, this last Danaher DVD is all about the triangle choke as a complete system. It features positions, entries, mechanics, follow-ups, and connections to all other submission systems he has. Furthermore, they are divided into subsystems, based on the different variations of triangles. All in all, the triangle choke is about to get a complete rehaul and it’s going to be available before the year ends!

The Anatomy Of A John Danaher DVD

What’s there left to say about a John Danaher DVD. By now, it is clear what we can expect. Over 10 hours of material is a given by now, so there’s nothing surprising about that. Once again, a two-part series, featuring 4 volumes each seems to be the norm. Still, every new Danaher DVD brings about an interesting innovative feature.

So far, we know not to expect to see a single triangle choke by as far as the third volume. The introduction to mechanics and the complete deconstruction of the move takes precedence in the first couple of volumes. Believe me, when I tell, you, even if you are a triangle wizard, you’re going to have things to re-learn about this fundamental submission. John Danaher spends a long time exploring what makes a triangle work. Even more importantly, he outlines what makes a triangle fail, and how to overcome the most common mistakes.

The real magic happens later on, as expected. Well, not quite as expected. I don’t know about you, but I certainly didn’t anticipate a 51-year-old Danaher with a hip and knee replacement executing flying triangles like he was doing nothing special. And that’s just the tip of the triangle (pun intended). What I loved about this Danaher DVD is that it has the “classroom commentary” feature we first saw in the Kimura is back. Having Danaher go over everything he teaches, as things take place live during rolls is irreplaceable when it comes to understanding the system.

REVIEW: Enter The System: Triangles

Danaher’s introduction to his triangle system is once again, a masterpiece. To be honest, Danaher is not a white belt coach – or at least his DVDs are not. While he dumbs down everything in terms of mechanics and application, he takes it for granted that people know certain BJJ specific movements by heart. That said, I find him as more of an advanced student/black belt level coach. His takes on fundamentals like the triangle choke or the Kimura are truly game-changing. He has a unique understanding of Jiu-Jitsu and an even more unique capability of teaching it. Learning the fundamentals from a completely different perspective is exactly what turns “regular’ grapplers into world champions.

Well, it seems we got more than we expected. With Danaher, you kind of never know what exactly you can expect, but still, this Dnahaer DVD is beyond everyone’s wildest dreams. The triangle as a staple of BJJ had a lot of people fooled that they know and understand it. Well, Danaher provided the wake-up call, as usual. His triangle system is literally for everyone. Given that triangles are legitimate submissions at all levels, there are no “legal” obstacles. Next up, Danaher dispells the myth that people with shorter limbs can’t efficiently do triangle chokes. On the contrary, his system provides options for people of al shapes and sizes. All in all, this DVD delivers the ultimate triangle system that everyone can execute with precision.

As usual, 8 volumes make up the instructional, each dedicated to very specific aspects of the triangle game. Once again, a perfect product with nothing negative of note.

DVD #1 – An Overview Of The System

The opening volume of this Danaher DVD, as usual, starts with a lot of theory. There’s no way you can follow Danaher along, later on, if you do not really grasp what’s he’s talking about in volume one. Make sure you thoroughly watch this one before you move on. Danaher first goes into what triangles mean, instead of going over technical aspects. He shares his multiplicity theory first, before offering an insight into his approach to triangles. Whatever you were doing before, you can freely forget. All you need is to follow the two stages to triangle chokes that Danaher outlines. There is also a very good chapter on the mindest of triangle hunting and how to open your mind to triangle setups.

In terms of mechanics, you probably won’t find a better explanation of triangle chokes anywhere. Danaher not only explains how a triangle works as a submission and position but also the relationship between your body and the triangle. As with other Enter the System DVDs, Danaher then heads to demonstrate the best solo and partner drills you can do.

The final third of the DVD moves on from drills to explaining the triangle variations covered in this Danaher DVD. There are 5 in total in his system, featuring the front, side, rear, reverse and opposite triangle. Each of them has its dedicated space later on in the series. Before finishing the first volume, Danaher goes over some common triangle situations and whether they have a place in the system or not. Pulling on the head is one example.

DVD #2 – Front Triangle

The front triangle takes centerpiece in this Danaher DVD. It is the “standard” triangle we all learn as early as a white belt. In this instructional, the front triangle stretches to three whole volumes and over 4 hours of material. The names of the transitions and techniques are again unique, but completely appropriate and understandable. John’s nomenclature is in fact largely responsible for the “light bulb moments” we all have while watching his material. This instructional is the same.

First and foremost, the definition of the front triangle and a few chapters dedicated t deconstructing the mechanics. Sufficient to say, you’ll finally understand how the triangle works, and most importantly, why it works. He also puts heavy emphasis on the so-called “trap triangle” that precedes almost all of Danaher’s triangle strangle setups. Danaher goes over a few triangle traps to triangle strangle transitions before putting it all together to finalize the submission.

Now that the concept is complete, you get to put it to use. It all starts with the unified legs theory, which paves the way for lower back positioning during the strangle. Finally, John starts with the first of many triangle choke entries with a sitting guard 2-on-1 setup preceding a whole series of entries against a single leg takedown attempt.

DVD #3 – Front Triangle (Part 2)

The third volume of “Enter the System: Triangles” John Danaher DVD picks up where the previous one left off. This volume, as well as the next one, is all about entries to the front triangle. Some are usual, some are unusual, yet all make perfect sense, thanks to Danaher’s teaching style. Here, another staple of Danaher’s gripping system comes to the forefront – the overtie. The first few chapters address the front triangle from an overtie / overhook setup. Since the overtie works closely with the collar tie, there are options for alternating the two to get a triangle.

One of Danaher’sfavoritee principles from the bottom is Kuzushi, borrowed from Judo. He uses it heavily to set up leg locks, and now also comes in handy for triangle setups. He has several options here, featuring the efficient clamp guard as a starting point. In terms of grips, Danaher’s also covers a few wrist control combinations that open up front triangle setups. A cool monoplata entry to the front triangle wraps this volume up, but it is far from the last front triangle entry in this Danaher DVD.

DVD #4 – Front Triangle (Part 3)

The first two volumes dedicated to the front triangle covered the essential mechanics, miscellaneous specific details as well as attacking entries. The final volume that covers the front triangle starts with a very cool option – reactive entries. Catching someone in a triangle when they initiate the action is one of the best things about the triangle choke. And, given the mechanics of the choke, there are plenty of options to do so.

John Danaher DVD Front TriangleAfter the reactive entries intro, top position takes precedence. Here, Danaher begins from guard passing situations. He offers a few different triangle entries from different guard passing scenarios. Immediately after is the side control to the front triangle series, which takes up most of this fourth volume. In fact, there are half a dozen different ways in which controlling the side mount can open up front triangle chokes. All entries tie together in a neat little subsystem, and all have a very high degree of success.

After the side mount, natural progression takes Danaher to the mount, and all the triangle strangle options it offers. The mounted triangle is one of my favorite options from the position, so I really appreciated every ounce of Danaher wisdom in this chapter. Wrapping things up is a really cool portion that goes over the relationship that front triangles have with other submissions. Some of the techniques featured here are “standard” triangle follow-ups, like Omoplatas, and armbars. However, there’s also a transition into heel hooks that are real eye-openers.

DVD #5 – Opposite Triangle

This was an illuminating volume of this John Danaher DVD, to say the least! Only on a few occasions before this, I had the opportunity to work on this position, but never truly in-depth. Having nobody to really dissect it had a lot to do with it if I’m being honest. Of course, it all starts with a Japanese name – the Hantai Senkaku. It is a Danaher DVD after all. Nomenclature aside, Danaher really sheds light here on a position that’s not used in BJJ too often.

The nearest position to the opposite triangle is your “standard” front triangle. Normally, Danaher explores their relationship first, offering a way to transition between the two without losing control. This last part with the control is essential, and it all comes down to what you do with the opponent’s elbow. The elbow positioning really changes the dynamics here, transforming the opposite triangle into a very useful attacking position. Some of the attacks here include sweeps, but not before you learn how to integrate the Kuzushi principle once again. As it seems, the opposite triangle makes this really easy, due to its dominant mechanics.

It wouldn’t be a true Danaher DVD if there weren’t submissions flying left and right, would it? Well, they’re not exactly flying from the opposite triangle but they are plentiful. While choking directly from the position is not possible, joint locks, like Kimuras, and Americans are right there for the taking. You’ll fall in love with this one straight away, no doubt about that!

DVD #6 – Rear Triangle

The rеar triangle is another one of my bread and butter techniques, so I was really stoked about this volume of the DVD. It took real self-restraint no to watch this first, but certainly paid off! After a typical Danaher intro, going over the position and dissecting mechanics, Danaher transitions straight into entries. Entries from the back kick things off, as it is one of Danaher’s favorite ways of getting to the rear triangle. A word of advice here – use the information from this volume of the Danaher DVD in conjunction with the back attacks DVD, particularly the auxiliary subsystems. It makes everything crystal clear.

It turns out the back is not the only position that opens up rear triangle attacks. Side control does the trick also. In fact, there are multiple entries that all work like a charm. The surprise contender here was the mount, which was a huge “light bulb moment” for me.

What I really love about Danaher’s BJJ instructionals is the interconnectivity of everything he demonstrates. All his moves tie in perfectly into each other without ever having to give up on something and start all over. Here, Dnahaer connects the rear triangle to the front, and consequently, the opposite triangle subsystems. As the volume draws to a close, it is the rear triangle bonanza! There are entries from guard passing, other submissions, the wrestling referee’s position, and finally, options to get joint locks off the rear triangle.

DVD #7 – Side Triangle

The side triangle concept is another groundbreaking one. It is not something new, but it does go much further than anyone has gone before with it. The Yoko Sankaku, as Danaher calls it, is a very, very useful submission to have in a lot of situations, While it is great as a submission on its own, it is also an unbelievable way to make sure you finish a failed front triangle attempt in certain situations.

Right after the basic mechanics and overview of the position, Danaher goes into some slick entries, which start with the turtle. HItting a triangle strangle straight from the turtle is a great way to finish a match quickly. Breaking down a turtled opponent can be quite the hassle, so these entries are going to provide you with additional options. There is also a setup that stems from a guard pass, and it is one of the best entries you’ll see in this John Danaher DVD.

Danaher also covers the link between the side triangle and some neighboring submissions. Namely, this triangle variation allows you to hunt, and change between, armbars and armlocks to multiply the threat.

DVD #8 – Reverse Triangle

The final volume of Danaher’s fifth member of the Enter The System series is all about the reverse AKA inverted triangle. This triangle differs from the others in many aspects. First and foremost, it has a slightly, but significantly different mechanics that you have to understand if you’re to have success with it. Danaher, of course, boils it down to bare essentials, making it seem very simple. Furthermore, it offers a lot of possibilities since you can set it up even from inferior positions, like bottom side control, for example. The fact that it works as a surprise attack or counterattack, paired with the possibility to connect it with other triangles makes the reverse triangle a very potent weapon to have.

This final volume starts with the mandatory theory behind the inner workings of the position. I cannot overstate the importance of this first chapter. The reverse triangle, as we said, can be really tricky so make sure you get every detail right before exploring the entries. Speaking of entries, this final volume has a whole bunch of them. Not surprisingly they feature both entries from dominant, as well as inferior positions. It is the real proverbial cherry on top of our triangle cake here. Notwanderingn far from his philosophy, Danaher finalizes everything with a very tight armlock followup from the reverse triangle.

IN CONCLUSION

If you’re into triangles this is simply something you must have. It will probably change a lot of people’s views on the triangle and make you 1000% more effective. YES, it’s that simple!
The only problem of DVD is with money just like with all other Danaher DVD’s but it’s hard to say it’s not worth it. I think it’s well worth the money they look for this masterpiece. Cool BJJ Gis and Jiu-Jitsu Gis For 2024 – Reviews And Guide

Best Cool BJJ Gis 2019

For people that train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the Gi, most often choosing a Gi is either a big deal or something they do not think twice about. Usually, beginners find it hard to choose among the wealth of available options on the market. More advanced grapplers usually already know what they want. They have the best brands figured out according to their needs, grappling style, body type, etc. Then, there are competition rules which dictate a lot of parameters of how the BJJ Gi should look like. Still, there are some Gis out there that are completely out of the mold, and that defy the common perception of a Gi. You know, it’s the ones you just can’t miss in an academy. Why not be one of the cool grapplers and wear a cool BJJ Gi during training?

If you take a look at any No-Gi BJJ class, you’ll see plenty of variety in the choice of apparel. Particularly during the past 3-4 years, rashguard designs have gone completely of the hook. And they make training that much more fun and colorful. On the opposite side, BJJ Gis usually comes in the traditional white, or somewhat more entertaining blue and black variants. Every now and then you’ll see a girl with a pink Gi as well, but it definitely not common. Sometimes, someone is going to make the brave choice and choose a different colored Gi, but this seems to be rare. This is exactly why you need to take a look at the best COOL BJJ Gis that are on offer in 2024. After all, you can compete in a boring Gi color, but you do not have to wear one daily, right?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Designs

A BJJ Gi is a unique piece of training apparel that’s quite different from the uniforms worn in other martial arts. Gis that people in non-grappling martial arts wear is made from lightweight material that’s not intended for pulling and tugging. Aikido and Judo Gis are sturdier and more resistant, but are very wide, particularly in the sleeves. The pants are also not reinforced since there’s not a lot of grabbing there. In that sense, a BJJ Gi features a unique design that’s very practical. And even then, there are the regular and the cool BJJ Gis to choose from.

A BJJ Gi has a jacket and pants as its main components. There’s also the belt, but belts do not come with GIS all the time. The jacket is the heavier and much more important part of the Gi, training-wise. There are different ways that Gi jackets are woven which has a lot to do with durability and weight. BJJ Gi jackets feature particularly strong collars, often infused with rubber for better gripping. There are also strategic reinforcements at places like the armpits to make sure the Gi doesn’t give way. The sleeves are much tighter than Judo or Aikido Gis, in accordance with the needs of the Jiu-Jitsu grip game.

The pants are simpler than the jacket but also feature Jiu-Jitsu-specific elements. They are sturdy, very comfortable, and durable. The best BJJ Gi pants feature a so-called ripstop grid that makes them virtually indestructible. On top of that, they’re reinforced on specific points like the knees. Similar to the sleeves of the jacket, the diameter of the pants is much smaller compared to other grappling GIs.

The Best Cool BJJ Gis For 2024

Now that you know what a BJJ Gi should look like, let’s explore some unorthodox options. All the Gis in our Cool BJJ Gis guide for 2024 is Jiu-Jitsu-specific Gis. Furthermore, they’re from proven BJJ brands that deliver nothing but top-quality products. On the plus side, some of these Gis are also both cool in design and legitimate for official BJJ tournaments. Others are not going to pass the IBJJF inspection, but they are the perfect thing to wear in training. And, we spend much more time in training than in competition anyway.

As long as a BJJ Gi is durable, fits you perfectly, you like the look and is a lighter-weight one, you’ll do just fine. Apart from those things that should come in as priorities, you can wear any color and/or design you want. And, we have the ultimate guide for choosing the very best cool BJJ Gis that are available in the market in 2024! Just remember that some of these are limited edition Gis, which means they won’t be up for sale for much longer! Make sure you get them while they’re in stock!

The Hayabusa Pear Weave Light Jiu-Jitsu Gi is a competitor’s dream Gi. It comes in all regular colors, plus a few variants on both the black and white versions. They also have a gray and a very nice green Gi that both fit the cool BJJ Gis category. If you ask me, however, I’d go with the green one. The only trouble is that you can’t wear it in IBJJF/UAEJJF tournaments. The Gi is lightweight, with the pants weighing only 8 oz. The jacket has reinforced lapels and specific stress areas, all 100 % cotton. The pants are ripstop, made from a special blend of cotton and polyester. Also features very cool embroidery on the shoulders, chest, and pants. Comes in sizes A0-A5.

The design of this Gi is a simple and minimalist one, yet very cool. To be honest, this one is on my shopping list, and in particular the grey one we’re reviewing today. Available in sizes from A0 to A4, this Gi has a very important feature – it comes preshrunk. This means that no matter how often you wash it, it won’t shrink an inch. It is also ultra-light, with a tapered athletic cut making it extremely tight. This doesn’t take away from the comfort but actually adds to functionality, as it’s very hard to grip and hold it. The material makes it perfect for warm-weather training. It is also resistant to bacteria, fungi, and odors.

Shogun Fight Jiu-Jitsu Gi Tao Premium

Best Cool BJJ Gis 2019Another lightweight Gi,’ features one of the best designs ever made for a BJJ Gi. The Shogun Fight Tao Premium Gi comes in three regular Jiu-Jitsu colors: black, white, and blue. As such, it is approved for competition under all organizations, as long as the size is right.

What makes this Gi one of the best cool BJJ Gis is the inside design. This lightweight Gi features an amazing interior design which is actually a rashguard. The complete inside of the Gi is covered with a rashguard lining, meaning you won’t need to wear one underneath. The rashguard has a sublimated design that’s nothing short of astonishing. The main mural is in the middle, while the sides of the inside of the jacket have further graphics across every inch. The black version is arguably the best, with purple embroidery on the sleeves and pants. There are also purple lines running the length of both collars. All in all, one of the coolest Gis that’s still legal to wear in competition. The pearl weave jacket also weighs only 450 grams.

Venum Koi Absolute BJJ GI Limited Edition

Best Cool BJJ Gis 2019If Hayabusa and Sanabul are among the very best BJJ brands out there, Venum is one of the top three of all time. What you get with this one is a lightweight, 100 % cotton Gi that’s perfect for both competition and training. In terms of competition, you might run into some trouble. It does feature only IBJJF-approved colors but has two of them mixed in the design. For example, the jacket is white, with blue collars and blue sleeves below the elbow. The pants are blue, with light blue loops and white drawstrings. The inside of the jacket features sublimated graphics of the highest quality. Strategically reinforced, this is one of the best cool BJJ Gis of all time. Comes with a drawstring cotton backpack.

The material is lightweight, pre-shrunk, and 100 % cotton. There’s EVA foam in the collar and reinforced stress areas. the pants are slim fit, with a ripstop pattern. Special reinforcements on the cuff lining make this Gi very hard to hold on to for your opponents. A huge feature is the fact that the Gi is a one-piece construction with no back seam. In terms of design, you won’t be able to compete with this one. It comes in pink and purple, both with black collars. There’s also blue embroidery on the back, as well as white logos on the sleeves and pants. The drawstring on the pants is also black. Comes with a free drawstring backpack.

Tatami Honey Badger V3 BJJ Gi

The honey badger Gi comes in black color, with a white collar. There is also white on the inside of the pants, from the knee to the groin area. In terms of IBJJF and UAEJJF, this Gi falls under the questionable category. The design has embroidered artwork on both sleeves as well as a massive one on the back. The pants feature the same art on a large part of one pant leg as well. The embroidery is in white, just like the drawstring. Sizes range from A1 to A5. This Gi is virtually the same as the Tatami Zero G one, in terms of technical specifications. It has a cotton pearl woven jacket and ripstop cotton pants. A perfect athletic fit and extremely comfortable.

BJJ Gi Rules

Let’s talk a little bit about IBJJF/UAEJJF Gi rules, to clear up what is legal, what’s illegal, and what can fly under certain circumstances. The IBJJF has very strict GI demands, that include size, fit, color, ruggedness, and cleanliness. Out of all, color and design are the most likely ones to result in a direct DQ if you’re not careful.

For example, the three colors allowed are blue, black, and white. The thing with color is that the whole Gi has to be in uniform color. This means that contrasting color on the collars is illegal. Still, you might be able to sneak one through, if you’re not at the Europeans, Pans, or Worlds. Having different colors on the sleeves and/or pants though, is certain to get you DQed. In terms of length, the sleeves must not be too tight or too short. The same holds for the pants, especially the length. Having a clean Gi is an obvious one, so we’ll skip over it. It is important to remember to have a GI that’s not torn or damaged though. Rashguard linings and embroidery are legal.

All in all, our guide for the best cool BJJ Gis of 2024 brings you the top options that are going to allow you to express your individuality on the mats. Get your Gi now, particularly if you have your eyes on a limited edition one! Also, check out our list of the best BJJ Gis in 2024.
