Part 1

Opening this Firas Zahabi DVD is the key chapter on how guillotines work. It is closely followed by the first practical example, in the form of a stack pass counter using a Guillotine choke. But Firas doesn’t stop there and goes into up and over options from there, completely turning the tables on your opponent.

A very interestingly named chapter is the one on “thug of war” which will show you how to stabilize and solidify your guillotine positioning, Moreover, you’ll learn some interesting and “secret” details on finishing the choke even with one arm. A Granby Roll guillotine setup wraps up the first volume.

Part 2

Firas Zahabi Guillotine traps DVDIn the second portion, Firas looks into different Guillotine trapping options. There are some interesting options that are named quite uniquely. The see-saw action chapter will definitely increase your Guillotine finishing percentage. The switcheroo is also something you will like to try out immediately.

A big part of this volume of the Guillotine Traps DVD focuses on the hook sweep, which, of course, you do from a Guillotine position. The hook sweep options include the aforementioned Swticheroo, Darces, getting on top, and some more Darces. A really useful chapter for me was the one on countering people with a heavy base, which has always plagued my Guillotines.

Part 3

Finally, Firas looks into some standing options, in the form of a high crotch and Sumi Gaeshi. In both cases, front headlock options open up very quickly, as long as you know where to look for them. And, as Zahabi puts it, there’s no better way to control a front headlock than with a guillotine. There are several versions of the Sumi Gaeshi, both proactive and reactive, as well as a detailed study of its mechanics.

An “easy” suplex rounds off this Firas Zahabi DVD.

In Conclusion

There’s no doubt about it – everyone needs this Firas Zahabi DVD. Gi or No-Gi it offers a great insight into the world of Guillotine Traps and will improve anyone’s grappling. Age is Just a Number, Teixeira Choked Santos in the Third Round, Arlovski Indestructible

Glover Teixeira defeated Thiago Santos by Rear Naked Choke in the third round of the UFC Fight Night 182 main event.

The great main event of UFC Fight Night 182 was offered to fans by Glover Teixeira and Thiago Santos, two experienced UFC Brazilians from the very top of the light heavyweight division. Teixeira won in the end, even though he’s already in the fifth decade of life and despite being in trouble twice during the fight, he took Santos by RNC in the third round.

The very beginning of the fight belonged to Santos who immediately felt the distance well and tried a few attractive shots before hitting Teixeira hard with his right hand, who was visibly in trouble. Santos felt that Teixiera is wobbling and he wanted to end the fight immediately, but Glover responded by forcing Santos into the clinch. Teixeira managed to calm Santos’s attacks with a clinch, then quickly took the fight to the ground floor where he set out to dominate and hit some nice shots. He did the job dominantly until the end of the round. Teixeira continued similarly in the second round, where he immediately took the fight to the floor and dominated all five minutes, during which Santos worked just enough to stay in the fight.

Teixeira attacked immediately at the start of the third round, but now Santos is defending the crash by hitting the wicked right hook that sends Glover to the floor. Santos followed Teixeira to the ground and started hitting him from the top position, but the 41-year-old Teixeira showed tremendous endurance. He managed to stay calm after a series of strong blows and managed to get up. After getting up, Teixeira attacked his Santos’s back, came to a firm grip around his neck, and very quickly forced him to tap for his fifth win in a row. A truly great fight was given to the fans by these two warriors.

An interesting and exciting fight happened between Andrei Arlovski and Tanner Boser. In fact, it was a tactical heavy war that belonged to a more experienced fighter. Boser was a big favorite and he justified that in the first round, during which he moved better and scored more. Still, most of what Boser presented was about low kicks, while Belarus was hitting less but left a better impression. In particular, the above could be painted in the second and third rounds, which can also be described by outwitting in which experience prevailed. Boser reacted visibly to several blows, while Arlovski received everything without any problems and this was probably decided by the judges, who, each with two different rounds, unanimously scored in favor of the former champion. In fact, all three were very uncertain and the nuances really decided, and hardly anyone could object that the decision went to the side of the Canadian. The 41-year-old Pitbull thus came away with his second win of the year, and with a win against a potential like Boser, he confirmed that he still has no intention of stopping nor should he be written off.

Rener Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu Initiative: We Need This Reform

The last year has seen us face a pandemic, but it wasn’t just a pandemic of a virus. America also faced a pandemic of excessive use of force by police. In fact, things got so bad, that in certain cases, riots ensued after such examples in which civilians paid with their lives. There were plenty of suggestions on how to make things right, but one of the most logical ones comes from Rener Gracie, who suggests a Police Jiu-JItsu reform that seems like it has the potential to solve this issue. 

The Rener Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu Initiative is certainly a better option than defunding the police. In fact, defunding is only running away from the issue, instead of actually solving it. It is not about the blame and who was right or wrong in the cases of police brutality that ended up tragically. That much we all know. It is about how we can avoid similar scenes in the future by having a police force that’s properly trained and motivated.

The Rener Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu Initiative

The Rener Gracie police Jiu-Jitsu initiative is as easy as the name suggests – teach police officers BJJ in a systematic fashion, allowing them to better do their job. The system Rener and the Graciessuggest is one that would see officers get invaluable BJJ training with a frequency that is both enough to prepare them for anything, and won’t take away from their duties at the same time.

Moreover, this system would be funded by the city, instead of seeing officers pay for additional training themselves. The benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for police officers are many. For starters, they include the mental and physical wellness of the officers, as a result of training. The mental aspect is what makes all the difference here because officers will let the chance to forget about the stress at work to an hour or so while becoming better equipped to handle that work.

Furthermore, BJJ is a proven way of coping with PTSD, or other types of trauma. It offers people coping mechanisms that allow them to function and thrive in daily life and stressful job environments. There’s also the benefit of community interaction, given that BJJ classes include people from all walks of life. Knowing the community and vice versa is key for a police officer to be able to really do their job.

Last but not least, BJJ will provide law enforcement officers to develop real competence for their job, instead of just having a degree of completed training, but without any practical experience. Moreover, three are the aspect of reduced liability, given that officers will better be equipped to resolve situations that do not require the use of firearms.

Issues With The Current State Of Affairs

One of the greatest issues the police officers face, as per Rener Gracie, is being undertrained for situations of empty-handed resistance. At present, officers get as little as 4 hours of hand-to-hand training every two years. That is obviously far from enough. Moreover, the organization of training includes different subjects, from using different tools to arrest techniques which probably leaves no more than an hour for police officers to do actual hand to hand training. The Renner Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu initiative really does pinpoint the issue here. But that is not the only one.

There is also the expectation that civilians have from officers. As per the Police Jiu-Jitsu initiative, the public expects police officers to be trained like Navy Seals. The reality of the situation is, they get maybe an hour of training every two years. That is as big a gap between expectations and reality as anyone can imagine.

Finally, there’s technology to consider as well. The reason we see so many more incidents as compared to before has to do with the fact that everyone is now able to record and publish. That just means that police officers have always suffered from undertraining for situations they encounter quite often, but in modern times it is easy for us to notice that lack of training.

Why Are Officers Using Excessive Force So Often?

While it is more than obvious that lack of training is the reason why we saw so many wrongful death and excessive use of force incidents in the past few years, it took something like the Rener Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu initiative to put things into perspective.

What Rener suggests is that the lack of training causes officers to panic in situations where they encounter unarmed resistance. Gracie talks about the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, which are parts of the brain that regulate how we respond in certain situations. An active prefrontal cortex means we analyze everything calmly and in a methodical fashion, using reasoning to solve “puzzles”. On the other hand, the amygdala is the fear center or the lizard part of our brain. When it takes over, it is all instinct and acting as if our lives are in danger.

In relation to police officers, this just means they enter panic mode and overreact in situations where they should have control. What it boils down to is that these officers get afraid for their lives, and start using punches, kicks, or any of the tools they have at their disposal like batons, pepper spray, and even firearms to resolve situations they could’ve handled with ease if the just had proper training.

The two ends of the spectrum include resorting to using deadly force, or staying so calm that officers are unremarkable at how efficient they are at subduing someone. In more practical terms, that would be the difference between shooting someone an officer is trying to apprehend, and controlling them from the mount or by using an armbar, for example, until backup arrives. There’s a world of difference here and the Police Jiu-Jitsu initiative can help solve this issue.

Rener Gracie Has A Solution 

What Rener Gracie suggests is just one hour per week of training for police officers. Normally, they would have to train in a BJJ gym, in a class specifically designed to suit those purposes, so that they actually learn effectively. However, that is way more than the 4 hours every two years they are getting now.

While it may seem like it is not much, an hour a week is enough for muscle memory to develop. The Police Jiu-Jitsu Initiative focuses on stuff the officers will need, which means they don’t have to learn Berimbolos and other stuff. That significantly cuts down the curriculum and allows for faster progress in less time. That is what it takes to develop skills that save lives!

The Rener Gracie Police Jiu-Jitsu initiative includes a motivational system similar to the one officers already have. Just like they get a bump in pay if they qualify for a higher marksmen rank, and they get career points if they are fit, they can get the same for being able to handle themselves in hand-to-hand situations.

Rener has a system of uniform pins that will have officers get both career points and a bump in pay if they complete a certain level of training. In all honesty, it is the smartest thing on the subject that I’ve heard so far!

Conclusion

Rener Gracie has some weird ideas from time to time, but he certainly can come up with something efficient. His Police Jiu-Jitsu Initiative is exactly the reform of the police system in America (and the world) needs. The more officers know BJJ, the closer they’ll come to the civilian expectations of their abilities. Moreover, they’ll be able to stay calm, and in doing that, safer, and keep others safe, while also reducing excessive use of force, wrongful shootings, and all the other dark stuff we saw during the last few years.

Geo Martinez is definitely one of the most interesting characters in the entire sport of Jiu-Jitsu, and one of the best No-gi competitors ever, especially in lower weight classes. Among other unorthodox things, he is a real specialist in the signature 10th Planet position “The Truck”. Conversely, he now has a brand new BJJ DVD out, named “Truck The World”.

However, their crazy (but highly effective and attractive) No-Gi system has grown so vast, that you now need to seek out a specialist in different areas of the system, if you’re looking to become one yourself. So, if the Truck position is your main area of study, you need to learn from the best in the business. That would be Geo Martinez, AKA the “Freakozoid”. And since not everyone can get to !0th Planet Freaks to train, his “Truck The World” DVD is definitely the next best thing!

The “Freakazoid” Geo Martinez

Geo Martinez has one of the most interesting Jiu-JItsu stories ever. He was not involved in martial arts his whole life, nor has had a family member that rained and introduced him to the world of combat sports. On the contrary, he started off as a breakdancer and a great one at that. He came into contact with BJJ through breakdancing, when he came into  BJJ gym to give dance lessons and was offered Jiu-Jitsu lessons in return. It is sufficient to say that is all it took for geo to get hooked.

He already had a very unorthodox and unique style of dancing, one that helped him immensely in mastering Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, he managed to get his black belt from Eddie Bravo in only three years, a feat not repeated by many others. The multiple times EBI champion and ADCC US trials winner went into all-in when it comes to grappling and has been doing nothing but experimenting, evolving, and competing. A submission rate of 70% clearly demonstrates how talented Martinez isCurrently, he owns and teaches at 10th Planet Freaks in San Diego.

“Truck the World” is a DVD instructional that has been long-awaited among those that admire Geo’s work, I included.

The Truck Position

The Truck position in BJJ is actually a modified wrestling ride. It is something of a checkpoint between side control or turtle and back mount, and as such, offers plenty of options. First of all, getting people stuck in the truck means you can control them easily, Moreover, you have a host of submissions available, mostly in the form of leg locks (calf slicers, heel hooks, ankle locks, hip locks, etc.). Finally, the position allows you to go to the back, but only after you go through another major 10th PLanet Jiu-JItsu checkpoint – the Twister.

The truck is basically when you get a lockdown type of control over one leg, for example from the turtle, but from the outside in. The goal is to lie on your back, place grips on the other leg, and make sure the hips are off the ground. This is the basic Truck position which will allow you to set up different transitions and submission holds. “Truck The World”: A Geo Martinez DVD Review

Geo is unorthodox in everything, so his BJJ DVD is also an unusual one. the only thing usual about it is the 4-part format that we have now accepted as mandatory for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu DVD instructional. In terms of content, he really does take care of every aspect of the Truck, from basic mechanics to his weird and innovative entries to key control points, and of course, Geo’s favorite – submissions.

Entering the Truck involves a lot of rolling and spinning stuff, holding it involves lots of creative movement and subtle shift as well, making the position really dynamic, but also extremely powerful. “Truck The World” is the most comprehensive instructional on the subject so far, one that has all the information on the subject organized in the best possible way.

1. Truck Basics

In the opening volume of the “Truck The World’ Geo Martinez BJJ DVD, you first get introduced to the truck position. Geo talks about its origins, how he got to know the position, as well as the years he has spent evolving it.

After the introduction, Marinez explains the position, but does so by covering some basic entries, mostly from the turtle position. When you see that the Samurai roll is considered a basic entry, you can rest assured the rest of this DVD is going to be highly entertaining. The NInja roll also makes an appearance, and both of them revolve around the prehook leg position which is probably the most important lesson from this opening volume.

2. Entires

The second part of the instructional is all about entries, and it is the longest of all four volumes. Geo Martinez does strat off easy, from the half guard, where he goes over dogfight entries, Speaking of guard entires, a closed guard entry via the 100% is also among the opening chapters of this second portion of the DVD.

All the fun starts a bit later on when geo starts talking about rolling entries, stacks, and arm drag combinations that open up the Truck. OF course, you can’t expect Geo to end there, and he introduces a new guard in the process, called the De X, which was a real revelation for me. Reverse De la Riva, staple pass, and Berimobolo entries follow, along with some uniquely named ways to get the truck, like the Piza truck and freak bolo, to name a couple.

An interesting back truck flow marks the halfway point of this instructional.

3. Control

Geo Martinez - Truck the WorldControlling the truck position has to do with knee lines and hip positioning, similar to everything else in BJJ. the key thing t remember is to get a triangle wedge on the far leg in the truck, in order to kill off any chances of a counter heel hook. The second major thing you’ll learn in “truck the World” is not to let your opponent’s hips touch the ground because they can “flip” the truck on you.

Geo’s take on things is to sue different positions to enhance and change the aspect of control over the truck. These include Cui control, Azusa control, Lotus control (a personal favorite), and the knee clamp.

4. Submissions

The cherry on top is the submission holds that you can hunt from the Truck position. Geo Martinez opens up with the calf slicer, a real classic when it comes to the Truck position. He goes on to cover some crazier versions quickly, though, like the Sneaky Kamikaze. The crotch ripper is also an option that’s always available, along with a route to the twister without actually leaving the Truck. You’ll have to see it to believe it, as it is one of the typical nutty Geo Martinez innovations that probably nobody else can think of.

The final chapter is all about the truck stop, before Geo wraps things up with a short outro.

Closing Thoughts

A Geo Martinez instructional is always a good idea. Even if you don’t like the truck position per see, a Martinez BJJ DVD is both entertaining to watch and will teach you something about BJJ, without a doubt. “Truck the World” is one of the best instructionals I’ve seen in 2020,  and that’s saying something given the sheer number of DVDs that came out in this past year.

MMA coach Firas Zahabi gives his thoughts on rolling with girls. He doesn’t roll with females in wrestling or Jiu-Jitsu, Firas explains why:

“If you don’t want to grapple with females, how should I communicate this as a newbie? Hey, coach, listen, mo offense to anybody here, but I don’t roll with women. And for whatever reason, you don’t have to give a reason. I have my own personal reasons.

I personally as a trainer, as a coach, I never roll with my female students. One time I had a situation where I was sitting down on the mat and some girl walked up to me. She was from another school with a club and she asked me would you like to roll?
I said I’m sorry, I can’t roll with you.
She was like OH you gotta roll with women.
I said, no offense, but I don’t.
And she was like, you’re joking, right? And she got offended.
I said, no, I’m not joking. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to offend you, but I won’t roll with women. That’s my prerogative.
She asked me why and she tells me you know what? I just came from another gym, like she was asked to leave it cause she had an affair with the instructor. And now it turned the gym upside down. So I found it kind of weird because she was shocked that I won’t roll with her. Then she was offended.
I wouldn’t roll with her. I had to kind of apologies to her, which I don’t feel I should have to apologize. But I did apologize to her.
I said, look, I’m sorry. You know, I hope I don’t offend you, but I won’t roll with you.
Then she proceeds to tell me that her rolling with her other instructor ended up having a sexual relationship with Him. And I believe he was married or whatnot or he had another girl or something like that. I wasn’t interested too much in the story but there was a social conflict between them.

So she came to my gym and now she’s asking to roll with me. And I was like, Listen, I personally don’t do that.
I know some guys out there will be like, I know. I know. Some of you’re gonna be like, coach I roll with women all the time and I never have an issue and when I roll it’s strictly jiujitsu. It’s strictly jiujitsu and I never have impure thoughts.
Now, you are the holy you guys. You guys in that group of people are the holiest guys.
I look up to you and I see these men as angelic, they’re angelic. They’re so pure of thought that if they roll with a beautiful attractive girl, not the least bit of wrong thoughts inside them.

I can understand if you tell me because the girls are not attractive I have no sexual thoughts. And I would say look, that makes sense because that girl’s not attractive. But you have to understand I can’t go around saying hey, you’re ugly enough for me to roll with. No, you’re pretty enough. You’re too prettier. You wouldn’t do that. Right? You’d roll with them all. You’d say Look, I don’t roll with girls. It would be the equivalent of a girl saying look, I don’t roll with men.

I would understand that it’s not a problem for girls walked up to me in my class and said, coach, I just want to warn you I don’t roll with women or excuse me, I don’t roll with men. I’ll say that’s your prerogative no problem roll with the girls, not a problem and if you feel uncomfortable with rolling with anybody you don’t have to…”

What can you expect to learn from the “The Berimbolo System” DVD? Well, the Berimbolo, of course. However, the mere fact that this is an 8-part instructional as opposed to the usual 4-part format means Mikey has a lot more to say about the Berimbolo, and plenty of associated subjects, than most of us, thought possible.

Mikey really covers everything there is about the Berimbolo and does it in the most high-level way possible. Starting with different ways of pulling someone into you for a Berimbolo, he goes on to cover inverting techniques and shortcuts, discusses how and where to post your arms, and even goes in stacking entries to the Berimbolo. But that, as you’ll see from the detailed Mikey Musumeci DVD review is merely half of what you get. Musumeci also talks at length about back takes, chaining attacks together, the top positions bolo, and an innovative aspect he dubs “the back hip”.

The subject matter of where to place your arms, how, and most importantly, why is key to mastering the Berimbolo. Mikey Musumeci dedicates an entire volume of his instructional to solving this particular issue.

From shoulder scooting, through inside and outside leg Berimbolos, all the way to plenty of drills that’ll have you use one arm, two arms, or no arms, Mikey systematically explains how and where to place your grips or posts to move around unimpeded. An infesting aspect is that in this particular volume, Mikey also covers some Berimbolo counters and defenses, which, as it seems, have everything to do with grips and their placement.

4. Stacking Your Opponent

How can you get Berimbolos off of stacking your opponents? Mikey Musumeci’s take is easy – control the hips, and you’ll be able to Bolo anywhere you want. Once aging, grips play the biggest role, along with posting the arms and using some of those inversion drills explained previously in this Mikey Musumeci DVD review.

The point of the stack is to open up the back anyway, and introducing a Berimoblo to the mix simply means you increase your chances to get there. Mikey offers different stack options in the form of a middle and far hip stack, the ladder bolo stack, and plenty of other innovative ways to combine stacking with Berimbolos.

The chapters include pulling the hips, the shoulders, and using collar grips to get people out of balance. The key chapter has to be the one on combining grips together, along with the chapter that covers climbing.

It is something Mikey has developed in his Berimbolo system that really helps you complete a Berimbolo, by utilizing a very powerful base to start attacking from.

Mikey offers plenty of uninverting variations, as well as different variations of the back leg basic Berimbolo, and even uninverting into the mount. In fact, the mount is one of the best outcomes of using uninverting in combination with “The Berimbolo System”. Collar attacks also work off of uninverting, with back takes and twister hook openings in different directions and at different stages of executing the Berimbolo. 

8. Top Bolo

He is the one, though, that has taken the Berimbolo system to a whole new level, ages ahead of what everyone else is doing. His world titles and victories over the biggest names in the sport further testify to that. In all the information available on specific diet plans for grapplers, fighters, athletes, etc., it is very easy to get lost. It is even easier to fall prey to diets specific for BJJ athletes, or even those for Gi or No-Gi practitioners (I haven’t heard of one like this, but it’s bound to show up). Most of them are not worth a second look or are just re-written versions of old diets that don’t really work. However, every now and again, a really useful system that is tried and tested comes along,. One is the Gracie Diet, but an even better, more modern one is the Pablo Popovitch diet.

The Pablo Popovitch diet is worth exploring because of two key things – it is simple, and it is sustainable. If you can’t stay on a diet, there’s no point in ever giving it a try. It is not about cutting weight, but about finding a nutrition system that you can keep up with for years, not just a few weeks. A veteran grappler himself, Pablo Popovitch has had his diet tested out not just by himself, but also plenty of other high-level grapplers and MMA fighters.

Who Is Pablo Popovitch?

Some of you newer generation grapplers might not recognize the name Pablo Popovitch. A 4th degree BJJ black belt under Jorge Gracie, Pablo is an ADCC champion who managed to defeat Marcelo Garcia, as well as multiple-time world champion and Pan American No-Gi champion. He also is one of the best submission grapplers to ever compete in the Gentle Art.

His system is based on personal experiences, his contacts with the Gracie family, as well as talking with plenty of athletes during his worldwide travels as a competitor.

The Pablo Popovitch diet is based around combinations of food that digest easily and do not tax the body, but rather provide it with energy. In that sense, Pablo states that different combinations of foods take different times to digest. For example, combining protein sources with vegetables takes about 3 hours, whereas combining carbohydrates with vegetables takes half that time. The concept here is that the body uses different enzymes to digest different foods, and that is mainly the case with carbs and protein. LUNCH: Meat and a salad (protein and vegetable meal)

SNACK: wheat bread with olive oil (3-2 slices)

DINNER: Wheat Bread with Olive oil and Tomatoes / Sweet Potato soup / Wheat Rice, Sweet Potato, Wheat Pasta, Yucca, Green Vegetables (Carbohydrate meal).

30 minutes before bed: nuts / natural yogurt with fruit/protein shake
