ADCC Rules: What You Need To Know Before ADCC 2019

ADCC Rules: Everything You Need to Know For ADCC 2019

It is September 10th today, which means only 18 days left until ADCC 2019! SO far, we’ve seen the full list of participants, as well as several previews of some of the possible super fights within the divisions. As the No-Gi BJJ Olympics come nearer, though, we can explore one more aspect that we’ve never touched upon before. Today’s focus is not going to be on the event or fighters. Today, we’ll be going over the ADCC rules, breaking everything down to the tiniest detail. For those that are already well versed in the competition, there’s nothing new to learn. Still, the rules can sometimes be confusing to people, particularly as there’s no other promotion that uses the same format. WHIch is where we come in.

It is strange to think that just a decade ago the ADCC and all the other Gi tournaments where two completely different universes when it comes to rules. The rise of submission only tournaments, and particularly No-Gi sub only ones has definitely changed that. Nowadays, we have bran new rulesets popping p left and right. From game-changing formats like the Eddie Bravo Invitational to all-out craziness like Quintet or Subversiv. There’s no shortage of different rulesets nowadays, that’s for sure. In fact, even Gi tournaments today employ some innovative rule sets, like Fight 2 Win and Kasai.

That said, the ADCC has stood firm in that regard. It was the first (and for a  while only) tournament to allow all submission holds. Moreover, ADCC rules are very unique in the time limit as well as the scoring system. So, instead of being lost as to what is happening come September 18th, let’s brush up a bit on the rules an ADCC tournament format.

ADCC Tournament Format

Before we go into the ADCC rules, let’s cover tournament format first. The ADCC or Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament is a single-elimination No-Gi BJJ tournament that takes place every couple of years. It features 16 main brackets at different weight classes. Similarly to most other tournaments, there’s also an absolute division were the winners of each category meet and the end of the tournament. The 16 man brackets are decided by way of invitation and by way of trials. The first six spots of each weight division go to winners of the continental trails that take place during the period in between two ADCC tournaments. The rest 10 fighters from each bracket are invite-only, and usually, represent the best of the best in the world. The weight divisions are -66kg, -77 kg, -88 kg, -99 kg and +99 kg, for the males.

ADCC Rules Explanation Before ADCC 2019For the female grapplers, there are only two weight divisions, the -60 kg, and the +60kg. Unlike the men’s divisions, the female ones feature only 8 competitors per division. Out of those, 4 are Trails winners and others are invited. The only people guaranteed an invite are the reigning champions.  If a champion decides to switch a weight category, then another fighter is going to fill their place.  The grappler who won the absolute male division last time around doesn’t get to compete in the tournament. Instead, he gets superlight with an absolute champion of an earlier tournament or an of the highest-ranked grapplers of today. In this year’s ADCC Felipe Pena will take on the legendary Andre Galvao in the superlight.

Points And Time Limits

When it comes to points, the ADCC is the perfect blend between a point tournament and a submission only one. This is all made possible as a result of the unique time limits of each round. The qualifying rounds last for 10 minutes. The final rounds, on the other hand, last for 20 minutes. What is also hugely important are the overtime rounds. Before the EBI format, ADCC rules were the only ones that allowed for overtime rounds. In the qualifying rounds, and overtime can last up to 5 minutes, and there can’t be more than two overtime rounds. It is the same with the finals, only the rounds last 10 minutes each. If there’s no clear winner at the end, a judge will decide the outcome. However, in ADCC tournaments, this is very rare.

What is unique about the ADCC rules is that during the first half of a match, (5 in the qualifiers, 10 minutes in the finals) there are no points. That mans the only way to win is by submission. Actually, in the final matches, only negative points count during this portion of each match. After the halfway point though, points come into play and can decide a match.

In terms of points, the structure of the ADCC is also a bit different from what we’re used to in Gi Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. Similarities include 2 points for knee on belly and 3 points for a guard pass. The mount position brings only two points though, whereas the back mount lands 3 but only if both hooks are in. A takedown or a sweep that ends in the closed guard or half guard bring 2 points each. However, a takedown or sweep that gets a competitor past the guard is worth 4 points.

ADCC Rules On Submission Holds

ADCC RulesThis is where the fun really begins. The reason the ADCC is so famous around the world is that it has the loosest submission ruleset of all tournaments. Or, at least, it did. ADCC rules state that every submission you can think of, from the rear-naked choke all the way to inverted heel hooks is allowed. In fact, this is in the essence of every submission-only tournament that followed. EBI actually borrowed more than just the submissions rules from the ADCC, including overtime rounds in its concept.

The idea behind the ADCC is to promote submission hunting, as opposed to just positional point battles. In fact, the negative points strongly reinforce this. Namely, the negative points are awarded for pulling guard or sitting down, among other more common stuff like passivity or stalling. Plus, who wouldn’t want to end a potentially 20-minute match in just seconds by using every submission possibility there is in Jiu-Jitsu?

Conclusion

The ADCC remains, to this day, the biggest tournament in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Regardless of what people say about the likes of the IBJJF Pans, Europeans or Worlds, they are all open style tournaments. For the ADCC you either get invited, or you have to win the Trials, which is not an easy thing to accomplish. The ADCC rules make the tournament that much more attractive and fun to watch. In fact, it is also much more fun to be a part of, as there is constant activity and submission hunting throughout. Not to mention that only the elite representatives of the sport get to compete, making it the highest-end competition in existence! And it is only two and a half weeks away!

Wrestling Vs BJJ: Preview Of Askren Vs Maia UFC Match

Wrestling vs BJJ: Ben Askren v. Demian Maia Fight Preview

Before MMA came along everyone was wondering what is the martial art that can beat all others. For a short while there, back in the early 90’s BJJ proved to be the answer. However, as the martial arts community picked up on Jiu-Jitsu, the odds evened. Nowadays, we rarely see specialists in MMA. Most modern-day fighters are well rounded in every core discipline of MMA. However, there are some old-school fighters left that still achieve amazing results by relying mostly on a trait they’ve truly mastered. In such cases, we get to see showdowns that remind us of the old days of the UFC. Coming this October is one such event that’ll match up Wrestling Vs BJJ. Representing wrestling will be UFC newcomer Ben Askren, and flying the BJJ flag is none other than Demian Maia.

We all love to see a good UFC fight. Lately, we did have the opportunities to witness some incredible upsets. For example, Ben Askren’s arrival in the UFC has definitely not gone unnoticed. The Funk wrestler managed to score an incredible, yet slightly controversial comeback victory at his debut against Robbie Lawler. He then suffered the first KO defeat of his career at the hands (ora rather flying knees) of Jorge Masvidal. Now his latest test awaits. BJJ phenom Demina Maia is ready to give Askren his third stern test in the UFC. This wrestling vs BJJ megafight will take place in October in Singapore, and we’re all eagerly awaiting it to happen.

Ben Askren: Funk Wrelsting At Its Best

Before arriving in the UFC, Ben Askren had a stellar record of 18 wins and 1 no contest. His victory against Robbie Lawler brought him an all-important 19th win but Jorge Masvidal was there to cut this streak short. A long-time Bellator World Champion. Askren was always very reliant on his wrestling skills. That often made people call him boring, due to his style of fighting. For grapplers, though,

Wrestling vs BJJ: Ben Askren v. Demian MaiaAskren’s Funky style is anything but boring. In fact, before the UFC he used his wrestling to deal with all kinds of specialists, from striker to Jiu-Jitsu guys. However, the key thing to consider is that he was outside of the UFC. While there’s undeniable quality in other organizations, clearly, the UFC is a whole different ball game. And so is Demian Maia.

Funny enough- Askren is not a big fan of BJJ. He has even declared himself to be a black belt despite never having gone through the ranks. His wrestling is definitely at an elite level, but his BJJ is not quite there yet. Despite his constant jabs at Jiu-Jitsu guys, Askren has never really faced someone of Maia’s caliber. So far, both Lawler and Masvidal were brawler more than anything else. Maia’s bran of Jiu-Jitsu is something very different though. Plus, there’s the fact that Maia is a true UFC veteran, with 12 years of experience in the UFC. Will this matchup be another slipping stone for Askren or is he in for a dominant performance? One thing is for certain,g he is not someone Askren should take lightly. Come October and we will have the answer to this Wrestling Vs BJJ conundrum.

Old School Jiu-Jitsu: Demian Maia

ON the other hand UFC new boy Askren is a true legend of the sport. Demian Maia did not have the easiest path in the UFC, but he is still here and going strong. While his record of 27-9 looks less impressive than Aksren’s it does include nothing but world-class opponents. Moreover, 13 of those 27 victories are by way of submission. Throughout 12 years, Maia has faced the who-is-who of MMA across two weight classes. Currently, he is coming off a two-fight win streak over Lyman Good and Anthony Rocco Martin.

Before those two fights, though, Maia was on a three-fight losing streak. What is hugely important to mention is that those were all seasoned wrestlers that he lost against. Colby Covington, Tyron Woodley, and Kamaru Usman are all wrestling powerhouses. While Askren is not at the same level of power or explosiveness (as proven in his wrestling match against Jordan Burroughs) he certainly has the technical skills to equal, or even surpass them. However, Maia’s experience in not just the UFC, but also facing wrestlers is something we also have to factor in. Is he the one that’ll bring glory to Jiu-Jitsu in this Wrestling vs BJJ matchup? After all, he has beaten wrestler the likes of Jon Fitch and Chael Sonnen in the past.

Wrestling vs BJJ In MMA

Wrestling vs BJJ: Ben Askren v. Demian Maia PreviewMatching up Wrestling Vs BJJ in MMA is nothing new. In the early days, this was a very one-sided affair, due to the prowess of BJJ on the ground. However, as the playing field evened, there have been some truly great grappling battles in MMA. When it comes to the UFC, you can expect a real grappling delight in the Askren vs Maia fight. For grappling fans across the world, this is areal dream matchup. For the generic UFC fan, it may prove to be a “boring” fight, with lots of clinching against the octagon and grappling exchanges o the ground. However, Maia also has some solid striking skill to surprise Askren, although power is on Askren’s side here.

The fight is actually the headliner of UFC Singapore which is set to take place on October 26th.

If you’re looking to blend both wrestling and BJJ than you should check out the “Shin Whizzer System” DVD by Neil Melanson. The legendary grappling coach has a neat little system that surprises everyone in both Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. Or, you could check out his entire DVD collection HERE!

Conclusion

I am a BJJ guy (clearly) so I will definitely be leaning towards Maia for this one. However, I aslo love wrestling and was actually an Askren fan until a while ago. Given both options, though, I’m definitely rooting Maia, although I do not necessarily see him winning. In fact, I see this as a “banana peel” match for both fighters. After all, this is not just two fighters on the line, this is a stylistic Wrestling vs BJJ match fo the ages. Who do you have winning this?

John Danaher – HALF GUARD DVD Review

Danaher Half Guard DVD Review Go Further Faster

What can I say, the evil mastermind of Jiu-Jitsu is back at it! That means two things for me. First up, extreme joy at yet another of John’s ultra-high-quality BJJ DVD instructionals. Second, it means a sleepless night, going through all the new material. How else would we be the first to bring you a detailed review of the latest installment of the Go Further Faster Danaher series? This third part of his Gi series is all about one of the universally favorite positions for most people that train Jiu-Jitsu. As of yesterday, the John Danaher Half Guard DVD is out, and this is the first-ever review of yet another masterful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional.

John Danaher – HALF GUARD

John Danaher Half Guard DVD Go Further Faster Review
Techniques List

This time around though, Danaher might just get the greatest response ever to an instructional. He does nothing new compared to previous instructionals. After all, his style of teaching has bee refined through decades and is proven to produce world champion grapplers. It is the subject of the DVD, however, that might just excite people even more than his leg lock and back control instructionals. Go Further Faster III covers everyone’s go-to safety position – the half guard. Хowever, this is a Danaher half guard DVD, so you can expect all the wild stuff we’re used to seeing from him and more! Suffice to say, there’s hardly a better half guard instructional out there, gi or No-Gi!

Go Further Faster DVD Series – Re-Shaping Gi Jiu-Jitsu

This new Danaher half guard DVD is the latest part of the Go Further Faster Series. If you have an idea what it is, let me explain. After an incredible six-part No-Gi series of instructionals “Enter The System“, Dnahaer has been explaining the fundamentals of his Gi system during the last few months. So far we saw an incredible DVD on escapes and defense, particularly from the turtle position. Next up, he made a great case for returning towards the good old closed guard. Now, continuing on the fundamentals trail, John goes over arguably, BJJs most universally liked position – the half guard.

Similarly to Danaher, there’s not much to say about the half guard that is not common knowledge. It is a position of safety, easy to maintain and offering extreme attacking options. Moreover, you get countless variations of it. In terms of safety, the half guard has all the advantages of the full guard. However, in an attacking sense, it offers just as much variety as open guards do. Plus, you need absolutely no athleticism to work from the half guard with lots of success. In fact, the half guard is a product of an injured black belt, that had to protect his leg.

Just like in the previous 8 Danaher DVDs, we’re in for a real masterclass, this time about the half guard. So far, Danaher has shown any inclination to work mainly off of the BJJ basics as his base. However, he is not against exploring even new positions, like he did when he included the Twister and Truck 10th Planet stuff in his back attacks instructional. Once again, the brand new John Danaher half guard DVD is a blend of fundamentals, innovative concepts and John’s own recognizable blend of uncontested teaching quality.

Go Further Faster 3: John Danaher Half Guard DVD Review

Some, once again, a Go Further Faster instructional. The format, as you can presume, is still in Danaher’s favorite format. In fact, he was the first to start issuing 8-part BJJ DVD series. This brand new John Danaher half guard DVD is yet another that follows this pattern. Also, in Danaher’s recognizable style, there’s a clear progression that starts off at the very beginning. Actually, when I say beginning I really mean it. John kicks it off with a real lesson on the origins of half guard. moreover, he has a real balance between using the half guard offensively and defensively, Most people that issue half guard instructionals, usually only cover one and mention the other. AS expected, there’s a lot more balance to this DVD, which is not hard when you consider that the total length of it is very near 11 hours!

The very first DVD is somewhat strange, even by Danaher standards. So far, we are used to Danaher going over things that seem unrelated to the subjects of his DVDs in his introductions. her, he goes straight to the half guard in a two-chapter DVD that covers everything you need to know about the position. Apart two covers some dark secrets of the half guard before volume three uncovers the half butterfly guard variation. Marking halfway is a volume that covers dominant gripping and attacking from the bottom half guard. Part five slows things down, outlining the integral laws and rules for the half guard, as organized by Danaher. Volume six offers the ultimate cure to every wrestler’s favorite half guard counter – the Whizzer. The penultimate volume takes things into lapel territory before John wraps it up with some crucial problem-solving.

The Introduction

As I mentioned, the very first volume is all about the fundamentals behind the half guard position. There are only two chapters in this portion of the DVD, but they both last quite a while. Actually, the first volume lasts for just over an hour. In the beginning, John covers the basics of the half guard, from origins to the reasons behind its success in Jiu-Jitsu. In the second portion, which is all about the bottom half guard, John actually outlines his entire system. This is where he shares the reasoning behind all the half guard variations he includes, and even those he doesn’t.

The Paradox Of The Half Guard

Danaher Half Guard DVD Go Further Faster_introVolume two of the  John Danaher half guard DVD from the Go Further Faster series starts off with a real bang. Danaher explains what he refers to as the paradox of “the half guard”. In common terms it is his genius take on why the position works, and what are the problems it needs to solve to be successful. Speaking of common issues, alignment is singled out first, as one of the most important issues you might run into from the bottom half guard position. One of the concepts that Danaher actually made famous: Kuzushi, make s an appearance again. As expected, it has to do with off-balancing your opponent before you do any sort of attack.

The second portion of part three covers the most important things you need to know about the defensive side of the half guard. As Danaher himself puts it, “the older you are, the more you need to play half guard”. Here, John teaches us how to use half elbow escapes and strategic grip placement to fight from an inferior position.

Half Butterfly

The DVD I certainly couldn’t wait to get to once I saw the techniques list! I am a big fan of the butterfly half guard, there simply isn’t enough information on it out there. Now, it is the evil genius of BJJ himself sharing his thoughts on it. However, before he goes into it, he covers a few single elbow escape,s rounding off the inferior half guard portion.

The butterfly guard depicted here is not just the regular one. Danaher calls it the scoop butterfly guard, which refers to the ever-present scoop grip he loves so much. Apart from lots of details on the grip, you also get options to move around the leg and open up countless attacks. The double elbow escape series round this volume off before a sole chapter offers a complete summary of fighting form the inferior half guard position.

Dominant Half Guard Grips

Now that the inferior half guard is out of the way, this volume of the go Further Faster John Danaher half Guard DVD moves on to explore attacking. The moment you get out of the inferior position, you get the chance to move to a dominant one. In other words, you arrive in the dominant grips half guard. Unsurprisingly, Danaher starts off with a half guard classic – the underhook. The tight waist series comes first, along with an explanation why this is your best possible version of gripping.

Once grips are done, it is all about ending up on top. Danaher’s method of choice is the rollover sweep. IN ahi own distinct style, he goes extremely deep when deconstructing this basic sweep. Moreover, he shows several different variations to help you sweep pretty much anyone. The fourth volume ends with an explanation of the basic movement that makes everything work form the underhook half guard.

Half Guard Rules And Laws

Halfway through, it is time for more of Danaher’s grappling brilliance. There’s nobody out there that as god as John at pointing out the most obvious things about grappling that somehow, we all miss. That said, all of Danaher’s systems are based on rules and laws, that, if you follow, success comes guaranteed. Here, he starts with the 90-degree rule, before talking about some foundational movements. The knee lift and hip shift get a lot of attention here. From an upper body perspective, it is all about the elbows, as explained in the law of the elbow.

Some things we did see before in other DVDs, like directionality of force make a comeback here. Thre’s even an essential section that you can’t really miss since it is labeled “the single most important section in this video”. A couple of back take principles follow before the limp arm concept brings DVD number 5 to a close.

Whizzer Solutions

This is the volume from this new Danaher Half Guard DVD that’ll really divide the BJJ world. It’ll bring joy to all underhook half guard players, and annoy everyone who’s hunting for Darces and Anacondas with the help of an overhook/Whizzer. Once again, the key concept of Danaher’s half guard system, the tight waist, is the centerpiece here. However, instead of covering techniques, John goes over common situations that occur while rolling/fighting. To be more precise, he covers 5 different Whizzer problems and offers easy solutions to each.

One key concept that most of us take for granted is foot fighting from the half guard. From basic practical applications to tight waist takedowns, it all works if you win the foot fight. In fact, it is mostly the double leg that John covers, exploring several different variations of it.

Lapel Attacks

This part of the John Danaher Half Guard DVD is a real representative of the Go Further Faster Gi system. Here, it is all about using the lapels to tie up your opponent in simple, yet inescapable ways. Since John was already covering takedowns, he keeps going, shifting to the single leg. There are several ways of using lapels to isolate a leg and proceed to take someone down. There’s another factor to success, though that most people do not usually associate with the half guard. It is the importance of posture. Here, John shares the general considerations of posture and how it can make or break your attacks.

The Knee Lever & Problem Solving

Danaher Half Guard DVD Go Further FasterFinally, Danaher covers something I haven’t seen anyone talk about since some decade-old Ryan Hall instructionals. It is the knee lever series, or in other words, ways of using leverage over a trapped leg. It is a deep half guard concept in essence, but it can transfer to other variations of the half guard. For example, the rollover sweep features again, however now, including lots more concepts than before.

A two-chapter portion on the reverse half guard concludes this latest edition of the Go Further Faster Danaher DVD series. The focus is on the common problems of the reverse half guard, and several ways of resolving them quickly.

Conclusion

Combining the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach in the world, and one of the best BJJ positions ever is a surefire way of getting something truly exceptional. that is exactly what the Go Further Faster John Danaher Half Guard DVD is. It is the ultimate way of going back to a more fundamental style of half guard while still introducing modern concepts. This DVD might not cover all possible half guard variations. However, it covers al those that work, and does it to perfection!

Renzo Gracie threatened to Choke French President Macron

Renzo Gracie on Macron and his wife brigitte

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu living legend and icon rants after the French government criticized his country’s reaction on the Amazon fires.
Renzo also called Emmanuel Macron’s wife Brigitte “ugly” and a “dragon”.

Renzo is now a Brazil chef of tourism but that didn’t stop him to threaten to Macron to choke him out.

“The only fire going on is the fire inside Brazilian hearts and our president’s heart, you clown,” Gracie said to Macron in a video on social media. “Come over here you’ll be caught by the neck, that chicken neck. You don’t fool me.” – said, Renzo Gracie

“That gang of clowns only open their mouths to speak badly about our country,” said Renzo in the interview of Macron and France, before insulting the French president’s wife.

“I’ll ask you a question, is his wife pretty or ugly? Would you do her? If you criticize our country, get ready to listen to a load of b*******, and also about your relatives,” he said.

“The fact that he is sleeping with the dragon does not make him a fire expert. She’s ugly, my brother.”
Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro (14 wins, 7 losses in MMA) appointed Gracie to his ambassadorial position a few months ago. But Renzo’s job promoting tourism has been hit for the last couple of weeks following global coverage of the fires that have ravaged Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.
After Balsonaro “LIKED” Renzo’s comment on Facebook about Macron and his wife, Macron called Balsonaro “extremely disrespectful” and “not up to the job”.

BJJ Weight Cut Manual: Cutting During A Menstrual Cycle

BJJ Weight Cut Manual During A Menstural Cycle

One of the most controversial aspects of combat sports, whether it is Karte, BJJ or MMA, is weight cutting. In fact, this is one of the standing controversies in martial arts. Despite plenty of attempts lately for governing bodies to regulate weight cuts, they still remain pretty much at large. At a professional level, cutting weight might somehow make a little sense. However, trying to shed 10+ pounds for an IBJJF competition as a blue belt does not sound like the smartest decision. Believe me, I’ve done it. A BJJ Weight cuts are not easy to feature, and very often, it may turn out to be the hardest part of tournament preparation. That said if you happen to be a lady, and on those days of the month when you have to cut weight, you have an almost impossible mission to complete.

It has often been said that cutting weight for combat sports is a science. I couldn’t agree more. A BJJ weight cut can go wrong in so many ways it is difficult to imagine them all. When paired with the fact that you need to be training and/or traveling during the toughest days of a weight cut you can see why so many people miss weight. Now, if you add the issues of a menstrual cycle to the mix, you get an unbeatable combination. The first piece of advice is to try and avoid mixing weight cuts and periods. However, since this is not always possible, let’s look at some possible solutions.

George Lockhart Nutrition And Weight Management SystemIf you want a painless weight cut, ask for help. If you can’t afford 1 on 1 time with George Lockhart, you can certainly afford his “Nutrition And Weight Management” bundle. You’ll get three DVDs and a na E-book that lay it all bare.

Cutting Weight For Competition: How And Why?

BJJ Weight Cut Manual During A PeriodThe basic idea behind cutting weight is to gain an advantage over your opponents. However, this does not work the way most people imagine it. Being half a pound heavier than an opponent won’t do much for you. Particularly if you’ve been cutting weight to get there. On the contrary, a BJJ weight cut might just leave you tired and gassed before you even compete. On the other hand, going to a weight class above might mean you have to face quite stronger and taller opponents. As you can see, cutting weight is all about balance.

With the ladies, unfortunately, there are not as many weight categories as there are with male grapplers. That means that presented with only a few choices, sometimes female grapplers have no other option but to cut weight. And sometimes, it may even be a significant amount. With a proper nutrition plan and a system in place, this shouldn’t be a problem for any healthy individual. However, there are a few more factors that the finer half of grappling ahs to consider when it comes to weight cuts.

Even the most perfectly executed BJ Jweight cut might end up a mess if your monthly period comes about. This brings us back to the most important aspect of weight cutting – planning. If you want a successful weight cut, you need to plan things out in advance. And yes, you need to go into detail. Moreover, do not just take other people’s programs and roll with them. Know what your body is like and make adjustments along the way to make sure you don’t mess it up. Otherwise, you’re only going to get an expensive tournament T-shirt in return and no chance to showcase your skills on the mats.

Weight Cutting During A Menstrual Cycle

The main trouble with trying to cut weight during a menstrual cycle has everything to do with hormones. The female body is designed to bear children, and it reminds ladies of that every month. Physiologically speaking, hormones in the female body circulate rhythmically not only on a daily but also on a monthly basis. These hormones, among other things, have a significant effect on fluid retention. This means that the common BJJ weight cut practices won’t yield results during this time.

Moreover, there’s the issue of fat reduction. Women that fall below a certain limit of fat percentage, might lose their menstrual cycle altogether. This is reversible, but not something worth an IBJJF medal. In a way, the body fights against a weight cut in order to ensure it is capable of preproduction. This is a purely physiological response and one you can predict, meaning you can factor it in your weight cut.

BJJ Weight Cut Manual For Ladies On Their PeriodThere are a couple of common issues associated with cutting weight during a menstrual cycle. One is cravings. During this time your hunger is a force to be reckoned with, and in particular, sugar cravings. Battling this during a time of low-carb dieting can be maddening. Moreover, there’s often significant bloating that occurs, frustrating your weight-cutting efforts.

Apart from a well-planned cutting protocol, you should employ several tips and tricks to deal with these minor issues. In essence, you need to understand that there’s no way to curb cravings without snacking However, you can make snacking part of the weight cut and not suffer negative consequences. Lockhart’s cinnamon in water trick is perfect to deal with sugar cravings in particular. Bloat control comes mainly in the form of hydration or better-said hyperhydration. Salt baths might help as well.

Closing Thoughts

To be honest, I am all against weight cuts. However, in the cases that you feel you really need to cut weight at least do it in a healthy way. There’s no need to let your monthly menstrual cycle affect your BJJ weight cut. Simply plan for it and introduce the adjustments to your cutting schedule. Moreover, never cut weight unless your cut is designed by a nutritionist or medical professional. Finally, if you’re really having a hard time with hormones, think about switching your weight class while you still have time to register

Braulio at 39 years-old is the older of the pair, with Victor 5 years his junior. Initially a Judoka, Braulio discovered BJJ at 16 alongside Fernando Cavalcanti. He trained ina gym in which eventually, Ze Radiola would become an instructor. Under his tutelage, Braulio went on to compete under the Gracie Barra banner, winning 3 IBJJF World titles, 1 UAEJJF World title, the ADCC as well as three European titles.

His younger brother Victor followed Braulio on his path. He first trained Judo with his brother, before eventually ending up in BJJ in Braulio’s footsteps. When he started, he was only 12 and the youngest at the academy. That got him to lose the desire to train and he stopped for a while, but not for long. Victor is also a World Champion, albeit in No-Gi, as well as a European Champ. In all fairness, he is considered to be the original inventor of the Estima lock.

The Estima Lock – Original Version

The Estima lock, or the most devastating legal leg lock ever, actually came into existence purely by accident. As Braulio Estima was getting ready for ADCC 2009, he was practicing a lot of inverted guard attacks. As the two brothers sparred, Brauilo’s inversions proved an annoyance for Victor. So, as he did his inverted guard, at one point, Victor instinctively reached for an exposed foot. He applied a rear-naked choke grip to it and the Estima lock was born. IT turned out to be so great, that Braulio immediately added this leg lock to his arsenal. Suffice to say, he caught everyone by surprise, winning both his division and the absolute at the 2009 ADCC.

The submission is basically a toe hold, but one that is legal before you reach the brown belt. In fact, I think it may still be legal even at white belt. IN fact, the way VIctor set it up is b trapping one of Braulio’s legs while he was spinning. He simply placed a rear-naked choke around his ankle. The force of the submission comes from the belly, where the foot of the opponent lies. IT takes very little force to get a very quick tap or very nasty break. It is definitely something worth considering, particularly now that”The Estima Lock” DVD is out and about.

Braulio Estima: ‘The Estima Lock And New School Toe Holds” DVD Review

1. Toe Hold Fundamentals

First up, The Estima Lock DVD does not start with Estima locks. Instead, Braulio Estima gives us a brand new look at toe holds. Apart from heel hooks, toe holds are definitely the most effective leg lock you can hunt for. this is due to the twisting nature of the submission, as opposed to straight foot locks and kneebars.

Braulio Estima - The Estima Lock DVD ReviewChapter one is all about the mechanics of the toe hold. Straight after, Estima covers his favorite toe hold setups, which are all proven to work. What I really loved is the single leg X guard toe hold setup. I already gave it a try and I won’t be giving it up any time soon. Also in part one, you get a look at a brand new leg lock in the form of the heel hold. There’s some crazy valuable information in here, particularly form the 50/50 guard. The best chapter has to be the one that solves the stalling puzzle form the 50/50.

2. Exploring Kneebars

Kneebars are also high percentage leg locks, although they can prove to be hard to get. Wel, Braulio Estima covers precisely this portion of kneebars. he focuses solely on setups that are quick and will help you catch even experienced grapplers. One example is the transition into a kneebar from a toe hold. What’s really impressive is that the entire sequence starts from an Anaconda choke.

Once again, the 50/50 guard makes an appearance here. However, as you’ll see, Braulio likes to tie the kneebar with other attacks every time he goes for it. That is precisely why it works so well for him. From the 50/50 he uses an inverted toe hold threat to get the kneebar. A straight footlock and a crazy rear-naked choke bring this volume of The Estima Lock DVD to a close.

3. New Estima Lock Setups

Braulio Estima definitely saves the best for last. The Estima Lock DVD requires some patience until you actually get to the Estima lock. However, it is worth the wait as ll previous things lead there. There are not many new details on the finish- not that the submission needs them. We already know it works. Instead, the focus here is on setups and covering new positons for attacking with it.

The first position is the lasso guard. Although this is the most common position for the Estima Lock, there are still some new details that are incredible. Single X and 50/50 guard setups follow, along with a way to hunt for the Estima lock form a waist control pass. The brand new take si the inverted Estima lock. ti seems the Estima brothers have been busy working on this particular aspect of the lock. it is brutal and even faster than the original version. Finally, there’s a new school toe hold setup and key troubleshooting tips and tricks.

Wrapping Up

Just when you start thinking that the Estima Lock can’t get better, Braulio and Victor re-invent it. They did not just improve the old version but developed a new inverted one. Moreover, this Braulio Estiam instructional covers a bunch of leg locks, mostly toe holds. Similarly to the Estima lock, these contain both classics as well as innovative setups and mechanics. This is a new school style leg locking instructional from a true old SChool legend of the sport. Get it, you won’t regret it!

It seems that the trend of BJJ instructional DVDs has somewhat followed in the usual progression of BJJ belts. It all begins with the closed guard at white belt. Then you move on to defense and survival at blue, before going all out experimenting as a purple belt. Well, it is safe to say that BJJ instructionals, at least the best ones out there, are now slowly growing into their brown belt phase.

There is a reason why the closed guard is the base for many different Jiu-Jitsu systems out there. From the old school Gracie Jiu-Jitsu guard, through Eddie Bravo’s rubber guard all the way to the grilled chicken guard, the BJJ closed guard works! One reason is that working form the closed guard does not require you to poses any particular athletic abilities. This is certainly one of the best BJJ closed guard instructionals to ever come out. Shawn Williams is a Renzo Gracie black belt and one of the most innovative grapplers out there. His Willimas Guard is the perfect blend of the rubber guard and some old-school closed guard. Moreover, it is perfect for both Gi and No-Gi.

Many people, me included, were waiting impatiently for this DVD to come out. It has two parts, with the first covering all the possible guard setups. The second one is all about traps and submissions, which is where Williams shines. The guard itself is a hybrid of the Rubber Guard, but one that requires no athletic abilities in order to play. Shawn shares his most effective pummeling drills and setups as well as ways to switch back and for between positions. The attacks are the real star of the show, though. The triangle, Omoplata, and Kimura setups are some of the slickest and easiest you’ll ever see.

There are four parts to this incredible DVD, the first of which introduces you to the Rubber Guard like never before. That manas you might get a chapter that runs for the better part of half an hour. Just like in the “Ground Marshall Guard” DVD.

This four-part DVD set is yet another NO-Gi masterpiece of Melanson’s. It starts off with body positioning and some leg and foot control basics. OF course, a triangle setup is never far away with Melanson. In fact, there are a bunch, including an arm on the mat one and a brand new socket triangle. In order to keep the variety alive, there are also Kimuras and armbars too. However, the best apt, for me at least, was the Irish Collar closed guard system. Suffice to say, this one is a game-changer, particularly for No-Gi.

Best BJJ Closed guard Instructionals Joel Bouhey

Bouhey is one of those black belts you might not readily know. However, once you see him compete, or teach, you won’t forget about him in a hurry. The Hawaiian black belt is extremely versatile, particularly when it comes to fighting off of his back. His take on the closed guard is his famous Falcon Guard, a concept developed for use in MMA. That means this is a guard you can use in anything, from self-defense to Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

The Falcon guard DVD comes in a single part, covering all the basics of this brand new position. Achieving the position and controlling it is the main focal point in the opening chapters. As the DVD goes on, Joel covers sweep after sweep, with each decreasing the opponent’s defensive options. Finally, rounding things off are a few submissions, most of which very unorthodox. Namely, this is where you’ll find the Hawaiian necktie, a brutal choke that’ll tap pretty much anyone out. Wrist locks, guillotines, and flying triangles also make the cut, offering lots of variety.

Marte likes to work fast, not wasting time on elaborate positions and attacks. Instead, he sticks to what he knows work- aggressive attacks from the closed guard. In this DVD, those are back takes, sweeps, armlocks, Triangles, and collar chokes. In each of these categories, Marte offers several ways of getting what you’re after. However, submissions make up from most of this instructional, including the coveted Hammer-Lock barely anyone knows how to use. It contains a whole host of underhook half guard tactics, ranging from the most basic ones to some of Vogel’s more innovative stuff. What I really love about it is that It contains lots of drills, each in aa section dedicated to certain techniques. So far we covered regular versions of the half guard, as well as modifications and developments by world champions. Neil Melanson is a real complete grappler with a black belt in Judo, BJJ,and a catch-wrestling background to support them both. Oh, and he knows Sambo as well.

The ‘Ground Marshall Half Guard” is a NO-Gi half guard instructional unlike any other. Neil likes to blend all his grappling skills in one, so what you can expect are, well, unexpected things. First of all, this is an instructional which has the fewest chapters per volume. Melanson likes to demonstrate entire mini-systems as chapters so that they make sense, this approach is highly effective but it will take you time to get to the end of this amazing DVD. Options, unlike before, include a lot more submissions, and I mean a LOT, compared to sweeps. After all, he is a catch wrestler by trait. That means lots and lots of leg locks in this one.
