(VIDEO) UFC Fighter Jumps Into the Frozen Lake and Ends up in Hospital With Bloody Head

UFC Fighter Jumps Into the Frozen Lake and Ends up in Hospital With Bloody Head

When outdoor training turns into a visit to the hospital…

Merab Dvalishvili decided to get out in the air and run around a bit, but then he spotted the lake and decided it was a good idea to freshen up his head and body a bit.

But that idea was definitely not good… Merab hit his head on the ice while jumping into the frozen lake and ended up with blood all over his face.

bloody face

The TOP 15 fighter of the UFC bantamweight category captured this bizarre moment with a camera and explained what exactly happened.

“I thought this was a great day for training and running in the park, but then I saw the pond. I thought the water was covered in snow, but it turned out that everything was frozen and covered with branches. As soon as I hit the ice, I felt like I was scraped off part of the skin, and nothing was more painful than when they put it back together! But now everything is fine”, Dvalishvili wrote

Merab Dvalishvili currently has five wins winning streak. We saw him in August when he beat John Dodson, and he was even scheduled to perform at an event this weekend, but asked for a little more time to recover, meaning he didn’t feel 100 percent ready after fighting the coronavirus.

The Best Striking DVD Instructionals and Digital Releases

The best striking dvd

There are only so many things you can ask coaches and teammates in training before class is over. If you’re really crazy about learning the ins and outs of striking, which is as complex as martial arts can get, then you’ll need to look to learning sources outside the gym. Striking DVD instructionals are your best bet, as long as you don’t just waste time and money on something that you already know. Instead, DVD instructionals should help you go deeper into aspects of striking, and not focus on general aspects of it. That is why we built this comprehensive striking DVD instructionals database right here. Enjoy the selection!

If you already train, you’ll have great use of striking DVD instructionals. If you are just starting out, or are looking to join a striking gym, whether it is striking-only or MMA, you will also benefit from digital releases. And, if you think you can learn striking only from DVDs though, without live sparring and going to a gym, you’re in for a rude awakening the first time you will need to use your knowledge. The combination of DVD instructional and actual live training in a gym is a winning combination but only works if you do both.

The Best Striking DVD Instructionals Collection

Watching an MMA match you might not think this striking thing is too difficult. Watching boxing or kickboxing just makes it seem even less complicated. The keyword here is “watching”. There’s a lot more to striking than meets the eye, regardless if it is all out striking or integrated with grappling for MMA. In fact, boxing’s nickname “the sweet science” is probably the best way to describe all types of striking.

Let me just try and paint a picture of everything you need to be thinking about during a striking exchange. First, let’s talk about yourself. Apart from a high degree of technical knowledge of strikes that include punches, kicks, elbows, and knees you also need to know how to combine them in a meaningful way. No, not all combinations of strikes will work out in your favor, there has to be a reason why you combine them.

Next up, we have footwork. Try standing in place and trading shots with someone and you’ll soon realize that without footwork, all the technical knowledge you have is worthless. Dancing around like Muhammad Ali or Dominic Cruz is an absolute must for any striker.

Then, there’s the aspect of not getting hit while you’re trying to hit someone. That’s where all the slips, weaves, shoulder rolls, evasive maneuvers, and upper body motions come into play. Connecting this with footwork, combinations, and technical knowledge of how strikes work will give you the baseline of being a good striker.

And yes, that is just the baseline, because you’ll need a lot more to actually develop a style of your own. That is where striking DVD instructionals can help. Apart from teaching you any of the aspects discussed above, they’ll also help you develop rhythm and a distinct style.

The TOP 7

Not all striking DVD instructionals are made the same, just like not all MMA or BJJ DVDs are. Some are just put together in a way that makes them crazy effective at teaching anybody the ins and outs of the crazy world of striking. New hilarious video of Khabib and Cormier: ‘What is it? What kind of shoes are those?‘

New hilarious video of Khabib and Cormier: ‘What is it? What kind of shoes are those?‘

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Daniel Cormier made one special kind of friendship through the years during which they trained together at the American Kickboxing Academy. Today, when they are both retired in combat, their meetings are not so frequent, but maybe that is why they pass in a unique atmosphere.

After what happened in the moments when Cormier presented Khabib with the UFC’s “Submission of the Year” award, a new recording appeared in the locker room, the day before the show on Fight Island, led by Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny, and where Khabib’s cousin, Umar Nurmagomedov, made his first UFC appearance.

Cormier, today a UFC commentator, came to greet the team in the locker room, and it wasn’t long before Khabib found something he could get into an argument with Cormier. DC came very neatly dressed, in a suit appropriate to his function, but the UFC lightweight champion noticed he had sneakers instead of shoes on his feet.

“What is this? What kind of shoes are they? When you dress like this, you can’t put it on your feet,” Khabib told him, continuing, “You’ve become a higher level, now you’re on television, you can’t do that.”

A discussion ensued, and Umar and Usman Nurmagomedov had a good time in the background, while Cormier first asked Khabib why he was condemning him, and then set out to explain some things to him by showing photos on the phone.

It was all filmed by coach Javier Mendez and posted on his Instagram. We can see a very interesting and entertaining discussion in which Khabib drew some parallels with his own “styling”. In the end, Umar Nurmagomedov promised Cormier to buy shoes worth $1,200 if he registered a victory in his first UFC fight. Not only did he succeed in that, but he also saved a $50,000 bonus for best performance. Of course, DC got new shoes.

See the whole mentioned event in the video below.

Is HIIT good for building cardio for BJJ?

Is HIIT Good for Building Cardio for BJJ?

Cardio for BJJ is probably something every one of us experiences problems with no matter how trained or experienced we are. The more you have it the more you push right?

Most of us will usually dose ourselves in sparring making our gas tank last as long as possible. While in the class we’ll even choose the sparring where we’ll go hard and where we’ll go light. That usually depends on our sparring partners and how hard they go and what is our goal at that moment.

BJJ and cardio problems

Every one of us was in a situation where we get the deep lung burn, your forearms are filled with blood and stiff, you’re exhausted and you just can’t breathe. We all have our limits right? Then you look at the clock and you see few minutes left and suddenly your brain “dies” and you feel like you just want to lay down on your back, spread your arms and legs and take deep long breaths and get back to “normal”.

In situations like this, we can say that you actually did a mistake. You did a mistake because you didn’t leave a bit of gas in your tank to continue. But also, if you’re leaving some gas in your tank your gas tank won’t grow. So, pushing yourself to the limits and getting yourself fatigued isn’t that bad at all.

That’s exactly where HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) training comes into play. HIIT training is designed to push you to your limits. It’s designed to push you to the spot where you can’t take it anymore. It’s draining your body until you’re completely out. If you’re doing HIIT training as it is designed to do you’re going to fatigue yourself as much as possible. You’re definitely going to push yourself to the limits and feel the same like you’re in a sparring session going all out.

Is HIIT training good for cardio for BJJ?

The short answer to this question would be yes unless you want to use the time for conditioning outside of your BJJ gym for something like weightlifting and other strength workouts where you won’t fatigue yourself and save your energy for BJJ.

Why is that so? Well, in your BJJ gym you’ll do sparrings, you’re going to fatigue yourself as much as possible and you can do it pretty easy. So, doing the exact same thing outside of your BJJ training will make you more open for injuries and you won’t really have a lot of energy to do it if you were sparring to your max the day before.

So, should you do HIIT for cardio for BJJ?

If you’re eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle where you’re able to train many times a week while having enough time to rest then yes, HIIT is good for you and you should go for it for maximum performance in BJJ. Otherwise, it’s not for everybody. Having a day job, kids, and other things that drain you, some weightlifting programs, yoga and similar ways of training should be ok to fulfill your BJJ training and keep you healthy while lowering the risk of injuries. Just spar as much as you can, don’t spare yourself in sparrings and you’ll do fine.

Also, If you’re training BJJ 1-2 times a week then yes, do HIIT or some other conditioning training and workouts cause you’ll miss energy in sparring.

Frequently asked questions about HIIT and BJJ

Is BJJ considered HIIT?

HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training and BJJ sparring is usually a high-intensity type of training. So, BJJ isn’t actually considered HIIT because it’s a martial art that includes much more than just pure exercising and workout for cardio and muscle gains.

Is HIIT good for gaining muscle?

Just like most of the workouts, HIIT training is building muscle because any kind of workouts requires more muscle tissues to perform. For BJJ, HIIT training is mainly used for conditioning so you’re able to roll for an extended period of time.

What are the benefits of HIIT workouts for BJJ?

  • Increases EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption)
  • Increases the aerobic and anaerobic capacity
  • Greatly increase your endurance
  • Increases cardiovascular health
  • Very good for your heart
  • Improves body composition
  • Perfect for busy people

What are the drawbacks of HIIT training for BJJ?

  • More risk of getting injured
  • Not enough time to rest depending on your training schedule

Example of HIIT workouts for BJJ

  • Sprints – 100m sprints followed by 200m slow run – 4 times, 3 minutes rest
  • Cross-Trainer – 30 seconds fast pace, 30 seconds slow pace, up to 10 minutes
  • 10 pushups followed by high jump with 30 seconds rest, up to 5 times

COBRA KAI SWEEP – Takedown that Leo Vieira Learned From a Kid in his Kid’s class

Cobra Kai sweep - takedown by Leo Vieira

As BJJ is a very complex and probably the most complex martial art so it’s not unusual that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaches and professors learn a lot from their students. In the case of this sweep that Leo Vieira managed to do in competition, he learned it from a kid in a kid’s class.

Once you see Cobra Kai sweep you’ll be pretty surprised how off-basing yourself with raising one leg high hooking the opponent’s arm can produce a great takedown leading you directly to the mount or side control.

Riccardo Ammendolia explains the story of this video.

“I saw Leo Vieira’s clip doing this technique in one of Marc Laimon’s remix tapes and it was unknown to me what he’s doing. So, I attended the seminar in Atlanta Georgia at the alliance academy and scored a private lesson with Leo Vieira, and asked him what’s going on in this move.

As he explains in the video this was a lasso sweep he learned from one of the kids in his kids class. This Lasso Guard sweep is modified to hook the opposite leg. As Leo said, he really likes this move and is using it in his training.

So, in this BJJ match, Leo took the risk and tried this lasso sweep while knowing that his opponent would “SWEEP THE LEG” out which he would be standing o and at the same time would give him momentum to sweep him.

Recently I told to Leo Vieira that people call this sweep Cobra Kai sweep and he liked it.”

The Best BJJ Escapes DVD and Digital Instructionals

The best bjj escapes dvds and digital instructionals

At one point or another in your BJJ journey, you will have to go through a phase where you explore escapes. They might not seem as attractive or fancy as attacks, or transitions, nor can you do flying variations of them. Yet, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as getting out of someone’s signature, go-to move unfazed, and continuing to dismantle them while they’re re-thinking their entire existence. That said, you’ll fail miserably most of the time until you really figure out some of the sweet spots and principles that make escapes work. Well, you can cut that time significantly short by picking and choosing from the best list of BJJ escapes DVD instructional ever put together. It is right here.

It took me reaching brown belt to really get into the groove of enjoying escapes, and all the suffering that comes with them. BJJ escapes can be really fun, especially after you get the first one or two workings. One of the reasons why it is so hard to figure them out is that there are too many of them out there. Moreover, not all of them will work with the same level of effectiveness against all types of the opponent. In fact, the same escape won’t work against different people that execute the same attacks because of individual preferences. Learning the principles that make all escapes possible, on the other hand, is universally applicable. So, read the reviews of ALL the best BJJ escapes DVD instructionals, make your picks, and begin to annoy the submission hunters in your academy.

The Best BJJ Escapes DVD Instructionals Collection

The formula for learning escapes in BJJ usually starts with you developing an interest in the defensive side of the sport, and an affinity towards suffering. If one thing is for certain, you will suffer a lot in BJJ, especially when trying to figure escapes out. Next up, you’ll look at which escape methods fit you best and eventually, try to fit them into a system. Finally, you figure out the BJJ escapes DVD instructionals that will help you learn and develop such a system.

The above sounds like a solid formula, in theory, at least. In reality, however, things are not that simple. When it comes to actually escape people’s attacks you’ll have to spend a lot of time, and I really mean a lot, failing. This is particularly true for submission escapes. IN that regard, escapes do not apply only to submissions. Defensive BJJ works across the board, from preventing a sweep or a pass so that you can set up attacks, all the way to getting out of ht tightest possible heel hook that seems like a done deal. That is exactly the gap you will need to bridge and the BJJ escapes DVD instructional we have in store for you are your building blocks.

There’s also the question of what next. Escapes are quite a tricky business, as oftentimes they will let you out of a grappling tight spot, but won’t necessarily get you in a position of dominance. That means that you’ll need to always have a way to get to a better position, or simply, a top position after you finish an escape. In combination with picking escapes that fit your goals and abilities, and combining them into an attack-defense system, you’ll build a BJJ game that is very hard to match!

The Top 10

Kicking things off are the top 10 picks in the domain of BJJ escapes DVD instructionals that have been proven to work for people of all sizes, ranks, and abilities. They are very diverse and offer the secrets to several different complete escape systems. Each and any one of them will do wonders for your BJJ Houdini act, but all of them together will make you untouchable.

1. Escapes from Everywhere by Bernardo Faria

Bernardo Faria DVD Escapes From Everywhere

Bernardo Faria has one of the best instructional in the entire sport of BJJ in this one. He has developed an incredibly simple, methodological, and easy to implement a system of escaping anything opponents throw at him. It takes him four long volumes to go through every bit of it, but he really spares no details as he will explain how to deal with BJJ’s most common positional and terminal attacks in the Gi. Very highly recommended.

2. Exit The System by Garry Tonon

Exit The System Gary Tonon DVD CoverThe polar opposite of Bernardo Faria’s BJJ escapes DVD, at least in terms of attire. Tonon offers much of ht same – a way out of literally everything, but he does it in No-Gi, quite understandably. This instructional is 8 volumes long, and in more than 10 hours running time Tonon explores many interesting and some quite unusual-looking ways of developing into a true escape artist. It is sufficient to say that they all work like charm.

3. The Running Man & The Baby Bridge: Essential Postures To Keep You Safe by Priit Mihkelson

The-Running-Man-The-Baby-Bridge-Essential-Postures-To-Keep-You-Safe-by-Priit-MihkelsonI’d argue that Priit MIhkelson is to BJJ escapes what Danaher is to leg locks. You might not agree with that, but what everyone will agree upon is that Priit has elevated BJJ escapes to a whole new level. Moreover, he has some very unconventional ways of setting them up. Most incredibly of all, he offers systems and concepts that seem to work universally for everyone and will be effective even against seasoned grapplers. The “running man” and “babybridge” concepts are great examples and just a fraction of the entire system Priit is developing.

4. Submission Escapes by Tom DeBlass

Tom DeBlass is one of the people that are most difficult to submit, as some of the best black belts in the world can attest to. While most of that is due to his aggressive and submission hunting-based system of grappling, there is also the defensive aspect of his BJJ that we have to consider. When it comes to resisting submissions, Tom is at the very top and he has a very simple way of approaching submission defenses. This instructional will teach you all about it.

5. General Introduction to Mirroring Principle by Wim Deputter

General-Introduction-to-Mirroring-Principle-by-Wim-DeputterWim Depputer is another very high-level BJJ black belt from Europe that has an incredible system of his own. His Mirroring principle works both defensively and offensively. IN terms of escapes, though, it is nothing short of incredible, and it does tie in great with Priit’s innovative BJJ escapes. If you want to take that “lazier” approach to escape, this is a BJJ escapes DVD you simply have to own.

6. Worry Free Escapes by Dean Lister

Worry Free Escapes Dean Lister DVD InstructionalLister is known as the submissions guy. He loves to tap people out, but that also means that he is extremely good at escapes. DO you know why? It is because he attacks so much that he understands what people are trying to accomplish when they’re looking to set attacks up. His “worry Free Escapes” system is based on understanding and recognizing attacks before they even take place. And it works. It is awesome!

7. Ultimate Choke Escapes by Henry Akins

Ultimate-Choke-Escapes-by-Henry-AkinsOne of the best instructors in the world, a black belt by one of the legends of Jiu-Jitsu Rickson Gracie, has a very effective formula to dealing with any choke attacks that come your way. Henry Akins’ choke escapes will help you fend off any strangle attempts, whether they are with the Gi, or without it. It is a four-part BJJ escapes DVD that leaves no storm unturned in the realm of Jiu-Jitsu choke defense.

8. Escapes: Old School Evolution by Fabio Gurgel

Escapes-Old-School-Evolution-by-Fabio-GurgelGurgel is one of those charismatic old-school BJJ professors that have an extreme understanding of Gentle Art. He asl happens to have a great delivery system, bringing things into perspective really quickly. As expected, his system of escapes is highly technical and based on old school BJJ. that man that everything he domesticates has been tested over and over again for decades. What you get is ta the latest, polished up and updated version of all the BJJ escapes that have proven to be real “classics”.

9. Get Off Me Fool by Jeff Glover

Get-Off-Me-Fool-by-Jeff-GloverIf you have a flair for the unorthodox, and perhaps even dramatic, this is instructional for you. While that is true for any Jeff Glover DVD, this one is particularly “out there”. It works though, especially given that people won’t expect any o the directions or moves that Jeff demonstrates here. Don’t worry about being able to perform them, though, this instructional is geared towards everyone, and you won’t need to know handstands or crazy flips to be able to get the hang of things.

10. Leg Lock Defense & Counter Attacks by Chase Davis

Leg-Lock-Defense-Counter-Attacks-by-Chase-DavisThe final top ten entry in our list covers a subject that many people have been looking for lately – leg lock escapes. While you can take Dean Lister’s or Tonon’s route and do them so much that you can recognize them anywhere, it will take time. If you’re looking for a “quick fix” way of mastering leg lock defense, this BJJ escapes DVD is precisely what you need.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Promoted to BJJ Purple Belt at the age of 59

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE PROMOTED TO BJJ PURPLE BELT AT THE AGE OF 59

Dave Mustane is promoted to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt on Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Legendary musician and songwriter of metal band Megadeth is promoted to BJJ Purple belt Thursday, January 14, 2021, two years after he received his blue belt under the same professor Reginaldo Almeida at Gracie Barra Springfield.

You can read more about his life path, cancer, and other things below the video of Dave Mustaine’s belt promotion.

More about Megadeath’s Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine was born on September 13, 1961, in the city of La Mesa, California, to a mother, Emily (a German Jew), and a father, John (of French, Canadian, Irish, and Finnish descent). He was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness.

At the age of 17, he rented his own apartment and survived by selling drugs. Then Lars Ulrich, the drummer of the band Metallica, published an ad in the newspaper in which he was looking for a lead guitarist. Mustaine responded to that ad and soon became a Metallica guitarist. In 1983, he was rudely expelled from the band due to alcohol problems.

Yet before his release he wrote several songs for the album Kill ‘Em All, the most famous of which is “Four Horsemen”, whose lyrics were later changed by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Mustaine released there, as well as some of his other songs, on his debut album Killing Is My Business … And Business Is Good! with original verses. The song was titled “Mechanix”. In 2002, Mustaine stopped playing guitar due to a hand injury, but returned in 2004. During his recovery he became a Christian, and he also studied the music industry, mostly production.

In June 2019, Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer. He stated that the treatment had already begun and that he was therefore forced to cancel most of Megadeth’s next concerts by the end of the year. He added that the group is still working on a new album.

The Best BJJ Gi Throws and Takedowns DVDs

The best throws and takedowns dvds and digital instructionals

Taking people down is funky business. It is highly entertaining and very rewarding. That is because it is one of the hardest things to do in combat sports, whether it is pure grappling or mixed martial arts. On that note, doing takedowns with the Gi is notably more challenging given the endless grip possibilities. It also means there are lots of techniques that you can learn from other grappling arts, like Judo and Sambo that also utilize Gis. If your focus is to take people down in Gi BJJ, then you’re going to need BJJ Gi takedowns DVD instructionals to learn from.

Gi takedowns DVD instructionals are not hard to find. There are quite a lot of them out there intended for use in Judo and/or Sambo. However, using those techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires a slightly different approach. Jiu-Jitsu rules and options are different from the aforementioned arts, meaning that going for a pure Judo takedown can get you into trouble rather than help you get the match to the ground. This was a huge determinant in which BJJ Gi takedowns DVD instructionals make our collection, and more importantly, our top five list.

The Best BJJ Gi Takedown DVD Instructionals Collection

Takedowns are hard for people because they’re very difficult to predict. Nothing ever goes according to plan with them, and if you can’t keep an open mind and adjust along the way, you’ll have a hard time figuring takedowns out. With all the grips available during Gi takedowns, this issue becomes even more prominent.

Training takedowns is chaos. As much as we strive towards control on the ground in BJJ, we have to accept that the standing exchanges are pure chaos. There’s no way of training for them in steps o, or ina controlled fashion as we do, when we learn, for example, a closed guard Kimura. When you decide to actually learn takedowns, and not just the steps to a throw or takedown, you’ll need to first embrace this aspect of practicing from standing.

Only when you’re aware of the entropic nature of taking people down can you start thinking about focusing on a single technique, ora set of them. to that extent chaos doesn’t mean you can’t use precision weapons, it just means you need to time them right. That brings us to the final piece of the puzzle – after you know what moves you’re going to do, you’ll have to figure timing and st ups out. The simplest way of creating a system that will fit you is by utilizing the help of any of the BJJ Gi takedowns DVD instructional listed above. All you’re going to have to do then is put it to practice on the mats.

The Best Side Control Attacks DVD and Digital Instructionals

the best side control attacks dvds and digital instructionals

Once you pass the guard, you arrive in one of the most interesting, versatile, and unpredictable positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That is side control. Contrary to what you might expect from it, actually having control over the bottom person is not an easy task to complete. The position is highly dynamic and it is one of the key things you have to accept about it if you want to be able to successfully launch side control attacks. While getting to side control is not an easy task at all, staying there long enough and with enough control to start attacking can be even more difficult and frustrating. If learning this is what you’re after, you’ve just hit the jackpot. Below, you’ll find every Side Control attacks DVD you’ll ever need to start torturing people from there.

Everyone uses side control in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. there no way around it. So why not become truly efficient at it, especially from an attacking perspective? Let’s face it, trying to hold someone in side control for 5 minutes is not just a futile attempt, but also makes for very boring Jiu-Jitsu. Instead, the moment you arrive in side control, your mind should only think about one thing: Attack! That doesn’t really come easy because once you start looking for attacks, you’re likely to lose the position if you have no understanding of what is happening. The following Side Control Attacks DVD instructionals will solve that particular issue, along with plenty more.

The Best Side Control Attacks DVD Instructionals Collection

It is not easy figuring side control out. Trust me, I have been there, feeling completely lost. I turned to every higher-ranked grappler I could find and instructional… lots of them. BJJ, Wrestling, Sambo, you name it, I have gone through it. That said, there’s a lot of information out there that it is difficult to make sense of. You won’t have to go through the same process, though, thanks to our best side control attacks DVD instructionals collection.

What you need to know before you dive in and start watching is the nature of side control. Namely, side control is highly dynamic, and you will need to factor that in when you think about controlling and attacking from there. In fact, attacking from side control can only happen if you stay there long enough. Moreover, attacks from the top of side control come in the form of either submission r transitions. Submissions are pretty self-explanatory, really. Transitions will take you to positions that provide better control, and points, like knee on belly, mount, or the back.

Here’s something to get your imagination going – what if you started to threaten attacks 9subs and transitions) the moment you arrive in side control? That will most definitely help you to stay in control of the position, mainly because people don’t think about escaping when you’re trying to choke them or break a limb. That, in turn, all means you can set up other attacks, like go for an Americana to get the mount, etc. Let me make it simple – just pick one or more title s form tour best side control attacks DVD instructional and you’ll see what I mean.
