Jiu-Jitsu or Boxing for Self Defense? Is Jiu-Jitsu Useless in a Real Fighting Situations?

Is Boxing Better than Jiu-Jitsu in a street fight?

Is Boxing better than Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for self-defense or fighting situations? Is BJJ unrealistic compared to the sweet science of stand up martial arts? This is the question for today’s video which comes from our friend who says his friend has told him that Brazilian Jiujitsu is not an effective martial art and is useless for a street fight.

I obviously disagree with this viewpoint as someone who has used BJJ in fighting situations and has taught students who have as well. I do not believe this. But in the video, I try to talk more about combat sports as a whole and the benefit of them. Whether it’s Boxing, BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, etc. Combat sport based martial arts poses a different benefit than some traditional martial arts. Mainly this is the fact that they spar all the time. This allows the practitioner to develop the ability to deal with stress which will help them navigate the unpredictable circumstances of a street fight or self-defense situation.

Also, combat sports have “unrealistic” fighting scenarios in competition. BJJ vs BJJ doesn’t always look realistic to a fight. But Boxing too is unrealistic where if you clinch up with someone you get broken up by the ref. This doesn’t happen in a fight. Ultimately though, I think that the competition experience lends itself to making someone more effective in a fighting situation. And if you are someone interested in self-defense or having to be in a fighting situation. I would encourage you to practice both BJJ and Boxing or Wrestling and Kickboxing. Just some form of grappling and striking. -Chewy

And What About Boxing vs Jiu-Jitsu in a Street Fight?

Learn how to fight a boxer with Jiu-Jitsu… using boxing. Matt Bryers from TRITAC-Jitsu goes over some self-defense techniques and combative training concepts to deal with a good boxer or striker and use Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu works for everyone! In this series, we show you how to apply Jiu-Jitsu to a wide variety of different situations, as well as different kinds of opponents. While this series has a lot of fun elements to it, the techniques provided work extremely well in real life situations. So have fun watching, but don’t forget to take some notes and learn something!

The “Cradle Machine” Ed Ruth DVD Review

A review of "The Wrestling machine" Ed Ruth DVD

A few years ago I got stuck with passing the guard. The knee shield/ Z-guard, in particular, started giving me nightmares, as it became a thing in the grappling world. Conversely, I tried everything I knew so far (an early purple belt at the time) to get out of my conundrum. The answer came completely unexpectedly but solved all of my guard passing troubles and then some! What happened was I came across an old wrestling move that, with little modification, works perfectly for BJJ – the cradle. As I learned, many grapplers use the cradle across all grappling martial arts to great success. Normally, seeing an instructional dubbed “The Cradle machine” got me salivating with anticipation. Even more so when I learned it is an Ed Ruth DVD.

The Cradle Machine Ed Ruth DVD is one of those that you’d probably pass while scrolling through the latest grappling instructionals releases. Well, I sure hope this review is going to change your mind. this grappling DVD instructional is an unbelievable tool for anyone who likes to pass the guard right into one of the tightest top control positions there is! And no, to lift your concerns, the cradle is not just a pin. It may be so in wrestling, but in BJJ it opens doors many never knew existed! Check it out for yourself and you’ll see what I mean.

Ed Ruth’s Cradle – From Wrestling To MMA

Ed Ruth is one of those characters that really have an incredibly well-rounded game. Currently, he is on the Bellator roster and has an impressive record of 6-1. He amassed 6 straight wins inside the Bellator cage,  five of which by way of TKO/KO. His only loss so far came in his last outing in December of 2018 against Neiman Gracie. That said, there’s a lot more to come from the 28-year-old welterweight.

So, home come we’re looking at an MMA guy’s instructional here? Well, before we get into the Ed Ruth DVD itself, you should probably know a few things about him. First of all, Ruth is a top class wrestler, one of the best ever to come out of Penn State. He used to wrestle in both freestyle and folkstyle, giving him an extensive wrestling background. In fact, he is a three-time Division One national Champion in folkstyle wrestling. That is exactly the person you want to be learning wrestling from. More importantly, he is the perfect man to teach you a versatile move like the cradle, on that works on the BJJ / wrestling mats and in the cage.

Ed’s wrestling skills are definitely right ou there with the best of them. His knowledge and understanding of the cradle position, though, makes him stand out from the crowd. Moreover, his experience in wrestling, MMA and recently, BJJ, put him in prime position to adjust the move according to needs. The “Cradle Machine” Ed Ruth DVD does just that. It brings a wrestling classic back into play thanks to the innovative approach Ruth has. It’d be a shame to miss out on this instructional, trust me!

“The Cradle Machine” – An Ed Ruth DVD Review

“The Cradle Machine” is a two-part DVD set that I cannot recommend enough. It comes to us courtesy of Ed Ruth, the man who is himself a cradle machine. I’ve never seen an instructional video by Ed before, to be honest. I’ve seen him fight in Bellator, and thought he was really explosive and fast. I later learned that he is an accomplished wrestler, which made al to of sense. Well, in this Ed Ruth DVD, he also proves that he is just as good of a teacher as he is a fighter/grappler. He has a way with words and makes everything make sense from the start. Moreover, he likes to show how moves progress from old-school classics to modern day modified killer ones.

The set is filled with information divided into two distinct volumes. Each volume goes over a series that is a part of the cradle system. In the first, it mostly the cross-face cradle and all the options it brings along. It contains a total of 8 different chapters and runs at just about 26 minutes. Volume two is a bit longer, nearer the thirty-minute mark. It has 9 chapters that mostly focus on tilts and the front headlock. All in all, the perfect combination of cradle-based moves to integrate into any game, BJJ or MMA.

Crossface Cradles Masterclass

As I mentioned, the first volume of this Ed Ruth DVD covers everything cradle related, fro the basics to crazy advanced finishes. In case you didn’t know, the cross-face we all love to use actually comes from wrestling, Moreover, it is a move that’s closely associated with the cradle. In terms of the basic wrestling cradle, it is almost always available in BJJ form the top half guard position. What’s even better, you can attain it fairly easily against opponents of all ranks. That said, Ruth provides some key grip placement advice that’ll revolutionize the power of your grips.

A review of "The Wrestling machine" Ed Ruth DVD - Sample move: drop cradleThere’s a whole bunch of cross-face cradle progressions and options. There’s the Ed Ruth cross-face, the overhead cross-face and a few more. Further along in this volume of “‘The Cradle Machine” you also find the drop cradle.  This is a move that’ll revolutionize your turtle attacks. Not only that. but Ruth also demonstrates how you can use it as an extremely effective takedown. A few submissions also find their way here, like a brutal neck crank. Another hugely useful chapter is the one on using cradles to do smooth transitions.

Tilt Series

Tilts are another staple of wrestling and not something BJJ people usually consider. This is what is going to give you a huge advantage over your opponents. That said, tilts are also a position that’s usually available before a cradle.. That opens up even more options for you, as connecting both give you both control and a very attacking top position. And this Ed Ruth DVD does it all for you.

Volume two starts with an overview of the tilt series. A few variations pave the way for some more applicable stuff, like the bar arm or wrist roll tilt All tilts have the same goal – open up a turtled or belly-down opponent. As such they’re the perfect tool to add to your BJJ arsenal.

A review of "The Wrestling machine" Ed Ruth DVD - Sample move: wrist roll tiltAnother thing that’s in this volume apart form tilts is a portion on headlocks. This series shows a few different variations of some slick headlock wrestling moves. What you get from them are different ways of busting open a very defensive opponent. Mind you, most of them, like the head and arm and the cement mixer ar rolling ones, meaning once you get the hang of them, nobody will be able to resist them.

Conclusion

The Cradle machine is not just another grappling instructional. it is perfect for wrestlers, BJJ grapplers, and even MMA fighters. In fact, it has all the hallmarks of one of the best instructions of this year. As someone who relies heavily on the cradle in my Jiu-Jitsu game, I cannot recommend this Ed Ruth DVD highly enough. Even if you’re not a fan of the position you’ll learn helpful moves that’ll surely be useful to your game.

Techniques List

Until a while ago, the weakest aspect f Brazilian jiu-jitsu was the standing portion. Granted, the ability to work off your back offers something other martial arts do not. However, getting thrown, even in a BJJ match, is going to cost you points. So, the superior strategy is learning how to throw people yourself. When it comes to Gi Jiu-Jitsu, nothing fits the bill better than some high-percentage Judo throw. While learning resource on the subject is plentiful today, They’re not all super efficient. One that certainly fits this description is the Ugo Legrand DVD named “French Combo throws”. read on and find out what awaits inside.

French Judo Legend Ugo Legrand

Ugo Legrand might be a name not many people in grappling know straight off the bat. In the Judo world, though, he is more than well known. The French Judo representative has an Olympic bronze medalist, silver and bronze medalist at the Worlds, and a multiple times Grand Prix and continental champion. The 30-year-old lightweight is one of France’s premiere Judo practitioners and an overall amazing grappler.

Legrand actually began Juda as easily as possible, at the age of 3. He had the opportunity to do so through his father, who was a Judo instructor in Grand-Quevilly. Apart from Judo, Ugo had exposure to Greco Roman wrestling and as well, through his family. Coming from such a strong line of grapplers, it is no wonder that he conquered the world of Judo with ease. he did not just conquer it though. Ugo loves to introduce his own things into classic Judo moves, making them extremely more effective. that’s exactly what the French Combo throws Ugo Legrand DVD is all about!

Ugo’s French Judo is actually like classic Judo on steroids, Moreover, it is not overall judo but more of a throws specialization. That said, Ugo particularly enjoys a couple of classics – the Uchi Mata and the Osoto Gari. However, his take on both and a few others is much different than the usual approach. that said, the way he sets things up is perfect for BJJ, particularly when it comes to initial grip patterns.

Ugo Legrand DVD Review: French Combo Throws

What can you expect from the French Combo Throws Ugo Legrand DVD? Well, you won’t learn Judo if that is your intention. What you will learn is high-level, extremely efficient Judo excerpts that’ll help you throw people around. They work in both BJJ, MMA, and even wrestling. However, Jiu-Jitsu is by far the best spot to go for them. The grips on the Gi are crucial to most of them, and the follow-up options on the ground are way better than what Judo has to offer.

Ugo le grand DVD French Combo Throws Review - Smaple throwThe instructional itself contains four different volumes. Each geo over different throws mostly organized according to the type and direction of throwing. The subjects covered are not plenty but they’re more than enough to guarantee you can throw even an experienced Judoka on the ground. It starts with Uchi Mata and Ashi Guruma options, before moving on to Harai Goshi and the infamous Tomoe Nage. Osoto Gari and Ouchi Gari are the main starts of volume three while the final volume contains some special tips and advice. The production is flawless and the full length of the instructional is just under 4 hours.

DVD #1 – Left On Right

Kicking things off is a masterclass on how to execute the most basic of all Judo sweeps – the Osoto Gari. While this is something that you usually learn in beginners Judo cases, it is a powerful weapon at all levels, including BJJ. IT does take someone to break it down perfectly though, and Ugo goes beyond that. he offers the basic version as well as a spiced up one to help increase efficiency.

Other subjects in the first volume of the French Combo Throws Ugo Legrand DVD includes the Ashi Guruma (a sweep/throw combo), Taio Otoshi and the infamous Uchi Mata. Now, the Uchi Mata might be Judo’s best throw (supposedly) but it is also notoriously hard to master. Unless you have a French shortcut, like the one Ugo offers.

DVD #2

The second part of the French Combo Throw instructional goes into a different variety of throws. Once again it offers bot sweeps, hip throws and everything in between. For example, the volume begins with the Harai Goshi which is yet another sweep/throw combo. The Koshi Garuma, which comes next is an example of a really effective hip trow, while the Tani Otoshi is probably the most effective sweep you can use in BJJ or grappling in general.

A real classic in the shape of the Kouchi gari also features in the volume. However, the real star of this one is the Tomoe Nage. Unlike most people that try to hit the classic Tomoe Nage, Ugo offers a less used, yet more effective variation – the Yoko Tomoe Nage.

DVD #3 – Left On Left

The third volume changes gears significantly. So far in this Ugo Legrand DVD, we saw how to deal in a left on right grip situation. Now, it is time to switch sides and go left on left. To be fair, Ugo offers just enough variety to keep things interesting but decides to stick with the same moves as before for the majority of the time. And it is the perfect combination.

Ugo le grand DVD French Combo Throws Review - Tani otoshiThe moves that make an appearance once again are the Osoto Gari and Ashi Garuma. However, they are modified to work from a left on left situation, providing great variety. Some other moves, that are ideal for this new starting position also feature here. Those are the Sasae on left vs. left and the Kosoto and Kouchi Gari. All of them offer great options that combine perfectly with the throws from the previous volumes. AS the title says, French Combo Throws”.

DVD #4 – Kumikata

The final portion in this Ugo Legrand DVD covers the best way of approaching Judo training. In fact, it is all about conencti=ng all the moves from above in a series of training drills that’ll help you master them very quickly. Kumikata is the Japanese term for what we know as grip fighting in Jiu-Jitsu. It is an ancient proven method of gaining mastery of any position by being the first to establish control. Drills include left vs. left and left. vs. right variations. Some additional grip braking advice and a closing section complete this incredible DVD instructional.

In Summary

In all honesty, I’m not an overly zealous fan of Judo instructionals. They’re just not on the same level of BJJ DVD instructionals, in terms of organization, techniques, and production. Well, this Ugo Legrand DVD made me eat my words. the “French Combo Throws” instructional is right up there with the best of them. There’s literally nobody in the grappling world that won’t benefit from owning this crazy effective grappling DVD.

Alec Baulding DVD Review: Keeping The Guard In No-Gi

Alec Baulding DVD Review: Keeping The Guard

What is your favorite guard to play? Closed vs. open, half vs. full guard, the options and combinations are endless. Yet, every BJJ practitioner out there faces the one same main issue with every guard they choose to play. That issue is how to keep the guard from getting passed. if you think guard retention is no big deal, try doing anything from the bottom without a solid guard and you’ll soon find out how exactly how important it is. retaining, and, if needed, recovering the guard are the two most essential skills of high-level guard players. “keeping The Guard” is an Alec Baulding DVD that focuses in-depth precisely on this subject. What’s more important, it is a No-Gi DVD, given how huge guard retention is without a Gi.

Alec Baulding DVD Review: Keeping The Guard
Techniques List

To this day, I’ve seen more guard themed BJJ DVD instructionals than I can remember. They all focus on two major subjects – getting to the guard and attacking from it. Both are hugely important and are the main goals of any bottom game. However, there’s something in between the two that often gets neglected. How to stay in the guard long enough to start simple, enting and attacking game is just as important, if not more, than the previous two aspects. To that extent, guard retention merits much more attention than it is getting. now, there’s a different kind of guard instructional out there. The “Keeping The guard” Alec Baulding DVD is the ultimate blueprint for never losing position from the bottom. While it is a No-gi instructional all the principles are perfectly suited for gi grappling as well.

Guard Retention In BJJ

It usually takes people a few years, and most often a purple belt to start thinking about guard retention. Yes, the blue belt is when most guard experimentation happens, but it is pretty straightforward at the time. In terms of retention, you need to think in a different way than a blue belt usually does. What you need is to understand Jiu-jitsu and the positioning of the body that makes guards effective. And retention is bang in the middle of it.

When you enter any guard, open or closed, two main things are going to happen. An experienced opponent is going to dig in first and make sure they have base and posture. Next, they’ll try to dismantle your guard in order to pass it. if you’re up against someone doing this sequence, you should start thinking about retention really carefully. If you try to retain the guard while an opponent is trying to pass, you’re already late and in guard recovery territory. Instead, you need to address any guard weakness you might have as early as possible. otherwise, the guard is only going to be a temporary pit stop for your opponent, instead of a means to end the fight for you.

Before we head on the Alec Baulding DVD review, let’s just mention a word on guard retention vs. guard recovery. If you’re in the closed guard and you manage to keep an opponent there despite them trying to open the guard, that’s retention. If you manage to fight off a pass, after the opponent busts out of your closed guard and get back to it, that is recovery.

Who Is Alec Baulding?

Alec Baulding is a BJJ black belt by Romero Calvacanti and one of the best prospect in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Just recently, he won the ADCC east coast trials, securing a spot at the 2019 ADCC in September. to that extent, it is no wonder that this “Keeping The guard” Alec Baulding DVD is a No-Gi instructional. But Alec is much more than a one-trick pony, that goes for both his technical abilities as well as the ability to grapple with or without a Gi.

Alec “Cofrinho” Baulding is a 30-year-old grappler, originally from Atalanta, Georgia. he got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after a short taekwondo stint. At 15 he signed up for BJJ in Robert Shaw’s academy. From there Alec moved on to join Alliance, before heading over to Lloyd Irvin’s team in 2012. However, that was not meant to last, and Baulding got back to Alliance after just a year. Calvacanti gave him his black belt in 2015.

Since getting his black belt, Alec Baulding has been competing very actively. he has a grappling record of 42 wins and 20 losses. Some of his accolades include medaling at the 2017 European open (second) as well as winning a bunch of prestigious IBJJFtournametns, like London Open.  His greatest success today has to be winning the ADCC East coast trials this year. That said, Alec is one of the best guard players of today, which is not surprising giving the subject of his first DVD instructional.

Alec Baulding DVD Review – Keeping The Guard

So, what it is exactly what you’re getting with this Alec Baulding DVD? The full name of the instructional is “Keeping The Guard: How to Avoid Getting Passed: No-Gi”. That pretty much sums it up. there are four volumes to this instructional, each covering different aspects of guard retention. In fact, there’s a clear sequence of events in this instructional. Namely, it all starts with the basics of recovering and framing. As the DVD goes on, Baulding covers pass prevention first, before moving to escapes from common bad spots, like side control and knee on belly. The goal is to try and retain guards whenever possible, to find the easiest route back to your favorite guard position.

Each of the volumes has several chapters. Alex does a fantastic job of explaining everything really thoroughly. The entire system is really simple and based on stuff you most likely already know. Baulding just puts things in perspective, offering multiple ways in which you can use the information. It is all about basics that work at all levels and can win you tournaments.

I – Guard Recovery And Frames

The very first thing this Alec Baulding DVD touches upon is recomposing the guard. From the opening moments of the first volume of his “Keeping The Guard” instructional, he focuses on this key subject. in fact, the entire first volume has only three chapters. However, they’re all conceptual and principle-based, meaning each is about half an hour long. During the explanations, Baulding covers just about everything you need to know.

Alec Baulding DVD Review: Keeping The Guard - framesWhen it comes to recomposing the guard, it can be as easy or as hard as you make it. Alce’s formula is one that works. mainly because of its perfect structure. Which leads us right into the second chapter of this volume, which is framing. Framing is the ultimate way to defend against any and all pressure from an opponent on top. Alec goes deep into it, introducing some innovative concepts on the subject. Finally, there’s resting in the guard. This means having a guard (and guard retention capabilities) so effective, that you can use the position to catch a breath and think about tactics.

II – Preventing The Guard Pass

When it comes to the defensive side of playing guard, pass prevention is what everyone seems to be focusing on. However, with a strong foundation of guard retention strategies. pass prevention becomes much easier. The reason is that you start early before a pass actually becomes a threat. To that extent, the second volume of the Alec Baulding DVD instructional starts with some crazy moves that’ll stop even the slickest guard passers in their tracks.

the leg windmill is a great example of these crazy effective moves. It is definitely an innovative concept, but a very high-percentage one at that. Some key hand fighting tactics are also a part of this volume. In fact, there’s both hand and foot fighting advice that’ll surely impact your guard game. Finally, there is a portion in there on defenses, including North-South, leg drag, and knee slice prevention. Something I particularly liked is the chapter on combining all the sequences into a system.

II – Escaping Side Control

One of the toughest spots to get out of in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is definitely a side control. Well, it doesn’t have to be, if you know how to recover and retain a guard. The thing with side control is, people, try to disengage completely and end up struggling. If you focus on guard retention instead, you’ll find that the escape route is much shorter and easier.

Alec Baulding DVD Review: Keeping The Guard - sampleBaulding’s take on it begins with some key basics. In fact, the first chapter of this volume starts with shrimping. While it is the first thing you learn it is definitely the most effective one. Particular when ti comes to escaping side control. Building on it are chapters on defeating the body lock and dealing with the dreaded Kesa gGatame. Once again, there’s a lot fo talk about frames and the best ways to effectively set them up.

IV – Knee On Belly Solutions

Wrapping this Alec Baulding DVD up is a volume that focuses on the knee on belly position Or, to be more precise, on dealing with it when you’re on the bottom. Once again, this volume has only a few chapters. However, each chapter is a system on its own. Moreover, they all tie together, providing you with a foolproof defensive game.

Once again some innovative framing and grip fighting is the fountain of all good escapes. moreover, specific and precise movement ensures you get out easily. Alec is a master at explaining how to move. he also offers so mDe la Riva guard options to make sure you finish an opponent quickly. A closing segment puts every little piece of the instructional together, giving you the whole picture on guard retention.

Conclusion

Keeping the guard is by far the best BJJ DVD instructional I’ve seen when it comes to the BJJ guard. This Alec Baulding DVD is a must for every grappler, particularly those blue belt and above. it teaches basic stuff that works all the way to black belt. After all, it is an ADCC trials winner doing the teaching. While we wait and see how Alec’s strategies work out for him at the ADCC, pick this DVD up and give them a try yourself!

Chael Sonnen Wrestling Fundamentals
Techniques List

Chael Sonnen has always been an entertaining character to watch. Whether he was fighting inside the octagon, commenting fights or talking trash to promote fights, whenever he was on, people were watching. It wasn’t until that Ultimate Fighter season where he coached against Jon “Bones” Jones, though that we really saw how much martial arts knowledge he has. Chael Sonnen is not only a great fighter and a top of the notch shit talker. He is also a highly accomplished grappler that understands writing on a very deep level. His brand new Wrestling Fundamentals DVD instructional is the best resource for a BJJ grappler looking to add some strong wrestling to their game.

“Bad Boy” Wrestling

In terms of Chael Sonnen, I think no introductions are really required. Everyone knows him as the man to almost beat Anderson Silva while he was in his prime. He also had notable UFC battles inside the octagon as well as crazy rivalries with people like Wanderlei Silva that never got resolved on the mats. All in all, Chael is a fun guy that we enjoy watching.

The 42-year-old Oregon native has a professional MMA record of 30-17 so far. At the moment, he is on the Bellator roster, where he is coming off a loss to Lyoto Machida. He started his martial arts journey with wrestling, conquering many titles along the way, the likes of All American and the Dave Shultz memorial. This rich wrestling background later proved very important to his success in MMA. Sonnen began MMA training in 1997 and got to the UFC in 2005. He spent some time-fighting in other organizations before eventually returning to the UFC after the WEC merger. His last years were ridden with controversy, from steroids to a famous on-set scuffle with Wanderlei Silva.

After a short-lived retirement, Chael returned to fighting, signing for Bellator. So far, he lost to Tito Ortiz, got to beat his biggest rival Wanderlei as well as Rampage Jackson, and lost to Fedor Emelianenko and recently Machida. In the meantime, he put together a highly successful grappling promotion named Submission Underground. it features tag-team sub-only matches that are highly entertaining, Sonnen often competes in those events himself. The next edition of SUG is scheduled for July 7th with Craig Jones vs. Antony Rumble Johnson the headliner. In the meantime, Chael Sonnen also came out with the Wrestling Fundamentals DVD, which is on review here.

Chael Sonnen Wrestling Fundamentals DVD Review

So far we know Chael Sonnen is a great MMA  fighter and an even better wrestler. That said, he has more than 20 years experience at the highest levels of MMA and even more in wrestling. That means that if anyone knows what’s going to work in a fight, it is Chael. To that extent, the Wrestling Fundamentals DVD focuses on wrestling moves that are ideal for BJJ. Even then, there are some modifications and adjustments along the way, which Chael demonstrates. That means you get both the wrestling classic move as well as the optimal modification for BJJ.

This Chael Sonnen DVD instructional has four parts to it. He covers pretty much everything that wrestlers know by heart. However, Sonnen only focuses on moves that work with the highest percentage. He kicks things off with some classics like collar ties and headlock and talks about chain wrestling. Next, he covers some groundwork, offering ways of pinning and controlling that are different from those we use in BJJ. Volume three is all about the defensive side of things, mostly covering the referee’s position, this gives a completely different dimension to escaping the turtle that BJJ grapplers will particularly enjoy. Finally, there’s something special happening in volume four, as you’ll see from our review below.

Front Headlock Chain Wrestling

When it comes to wrestling Fundamentals there are hardly any that fit the description more than collar ties. The Russian 2-on-1, the arm drag, and the front headlock are the holy trinity of wrestling moves that work. Well, Chael brings all of them together, offering much-needed variations that fit BJJ and MMA needs.

Chael Sonnen Wrestling Fundamentals DVD UnderhookThe most impressive part is that he puts everything to use straight away. his concept on chain wrestling is actually in the very core of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. he ties everything up so good that you’ll end up catching even black belts with ease once you drill these moves enough times. There are a few front headlock chains that’ll surely change both your standing and turtle game. Moreover, there are some great underhook and low singles secrets in there that only seasoned wrestlers know!

Leg Rides And Mat Returns

Groundwork is an aspect of wrestling that really doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I’m on a roll with using writing pins and controls in BJJ training. and I can tell you that they work like a cham. Chael Sonnen’s Wrestling Fundamentals DVD has a complete volume focusing on some crazy pinning and transitional grappling wizardry. Most of the volume focuses on leg rides. Those are in essence, slick ways of using leg entanglements to dismantle the turtle and get the top position.

Chale Sonnen covers pretty much everything concerning leg rides. From basic rides and amt returns to suing leg rides to get to the home use position. Once you see what he considers as a home base you’ll immediately have to try it. it is that good. Moreover, he has some incredible cradle entries that help you both pin and transition around an opponent.

The Referee’s Position AKA Bottom Turtle

Regardless of grappling martial art, escaping on the ground is by far the hardest part. however, you have the option of muscling out or using technical ways to get the upper hand. As expected, Chael Sonnen is a fan of the latter, and that’s exactly what you can find in volume three of the Wrestling Fundamentals DVD.

Chael Sonnen Wrestling Fundamentals DVD CradleIt all begins with the referee’s position, which is pretty much a turtle with extended arms. While this position is risky in BJJ, it is the staple of defense in wrestling. With the modifications Chael teaches, you’ll be able to take all the defensive power of the position and transfer it to the turtle. From options on clearing the legs to devastating counters, Sonnen sure has a great system of bottom position escapes! The chain wrestling concept when it comes to bottom defenses is groundbreaking, to say the least. Make sure you pay particular attention to this part!

Keenan Cornelius Atos Break Up And Galvao Feud

Keenan Cornelius Atos Split - What realyl |Happened between him and Galvao?

One of the biggest upsets that happened at this year’s IBJJF World Championship actually took place before the event itself. Not long before the Mundials, one of the top prospects in at black belt, Keenan Cornelius left the team he has been associated with since we first heard of him. Moreover, that is not just any team, but Andrea Galavao’s Atos, a real factory of high-level competitive grappling talent. The Keenan Cornelius Atos bust up brought about a real storm in the grappling community, raising a whole host of questions. Today, we’ll try to get to the bottom of things.

Now that the dust has settled a little bit, we can start looking into that highly popular Keenan Cornelius Atos break up. It certainly cost both parties a lot, as they were a match made in heaven. Keenan is one of the fiercest BJJ cmpet9itors of today, while Atos provides the arguably best training environment. With the likes of Galvao, the Mendes brothers and a host of other talents, there’s never an easy day on the mats in there.s Well, ti seems Keenan has had enough as he ended up without a team or affiliation just before the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament of 2019! What happened?

The Atos BJJ Competition Team

The Atos Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is one of the best in the world without a doubt. It is a great academy, probably best known as a breeding ground for world champions, both in the Gi and without it. The academy was established in 2008 by Ramon Lemos and Andre Galvao, with its first headquarters in Sao Paolo. Fast forward ten years and the HQ is now in sunny California, and the academy is doing better than ever. Well, apart from the whole Keenan Cornelius Atos Break up fiasco.

Initially, the Atos competition team was a lightweight one, apart from Galvao himself. The name derives from the Portuguese “atos” meaning the “book of acts.” The academy is responsible for some of the greatest talents in Jiu-Jitsu. Gui and Rafa Mendes are a couple of legends that spent a lot fo their development at Atos. In terms of technical progress, a lot of innovation on positions like the leg drag and the 50/50 guard comes from right there. Another huge aspect of Jiu-Jitsu that’s related to Atos are lapel guards, particularly innovative stuff like the Worm Guard, which is actually Keenan’s “baby”.

The Atos Jiu-Jitsu Academy got 5 black belts to the podium at their very first outing as a competitive team. Plenty of high-level grapplers still train at Atos to this day, soma as part of the team, while other visiting. So far, the team never had any controversy (apart form pioneering the use of the 50/50 guard but that’s a subject for another time). Well, it seems that the golden days of Atos are no more. the questions are whether Keenan was right to go, and will others follow?

Keenan Cornelius Atos Break Up

The Jiu-Jitsu community never really expected anything like this to come out of the Atos HQ. Of course, nobody knows what takes place behind closed doors, until something like this happens. When Cornelius left Atos, the community immediately began spinning theories as to what happened.

Keenan Cornelius Atos Break UpThe thing with both Keenan Cornelius and Andre Galvao is that they’re both nice guys of BJJ, they do not trash talk, they are respectful and they have unique grappling styles. Galvao is of the old-school breed of technical fighters. However, what sets him aside is this openness towards modern BJJ techniques. Keenan, on the other hand, is a real wizard when it comes to innovation, particularly ibn Gi Jiu-Jitsu. As far as everyone can see, these two are a match made in heaven. Galva was the man to present Keenan with his black belt in 2013

In terms of the Keenan Cornelius Atos fall out, nobody really knew what to think. Keenan did leave his previous team (Loyd Irvin) as well. However, that was as part of a mass exodus following a sexual molestation affair. In terms of the Atos bust-up, there were many theories. Some even went as far as saying Keenan is uncomfortable with all the closeouts that often happen with Atos. Of course, it makes no sense but there was nothing but speculation until now.

What Really Happened?

The fact of the matter is that Andre Galvao actually asked Keenan to leave the team, and not vice versa. There were plenty of reasons behind this. Still, as Keenan himself says, it was mainly down to differences in character between him and Galvao.

A short time before the Keenan Cornelius Atos split, a story broke out about Atos’ no-nonsense rule on tardiness. It turns our Keenan was not allowed to come into training because he did not show up on time. While this rule is pretty much a constant in BJJ, to competitors, and particularly high-level black belts often get by. Well, Atos took a stance and for Keenan, or Galvao, or both it was the last drop.

Keenan’s recent appearance in Josh Hinger’s podcast brought about some answers. As far as Galvao goes, his approach is more of the traditional teacher-student variety, one that Keen does not find particularly acceptable. Keenan has a more relaxed approach to things, particularly given his status in the BJJ community. Small personal disagreements of this sort quickly became bigger, eventually driving a rift between the two grapplers.

As Keenan put itI think that was the main issue is him trying to be the professor and me trying to be the student when neither of us were really cut out for that role for each other. I think that was a problem. I think we would have been much better if we were either both students of each other or both professors of each other.”

There are many facets to this split,” Keenan said previously. “I was asked to leave.”

What Comes Next?

Keenan Cornelius Atos Split And galvao FeudAs far as the future goes, there are actually plenty of opportunities for Cornelius. At the 2019 IBJJF Mundials, he performed under the BJJ Globetrotters banner. As great as a team as they are, they don’t seem like his final destination, though. Keenan likes to train in competition dens, with as many of the highest level grapplers of today as possible. BJJ Globetrotters actually seem to laid back, even for Keenan’s taste. That leaves us with one of the4 most probable options.

One version of events is Keenan joining a top competition team. Gracie Barra or Checkmate are the forerunners here. However, just about any major grappling competition team, from Alliance to Ribeiro’s Jiu-Jitsu Academy, would be glad to have Keenan on board. However, there’s also a different option.

At this point in his career, Keenan is in a great position to actually start his own school. Currently working with the Ribeiro brothers, and with a record of 171 wins and 30 losses, Keenan can do just about anything he wants.

“I will open my own academy and try to unify the scattered Americans who don’t have a place represent their country,” said Keenan. “Of course everyone is invited but we are going to be wrestlers who do funky moves and we also don’t like it when people tell us what to do. My life got turned upside down but the overwhelming support I’ve seen and received really helped me see this in a positive light. Last thing, I’m opening up my style and brand to gyms who want to affiliate with me.”

In Summary

With the ADCC in September fast approaching, Keenan is unlikely to start building an academy at the moment. Most likely, he’ll keep going with the Ribeiros or the BJJ Globetrotters, or both, until the ADCC ends. Then, he’ll most likely re-evaluate and probably start working towards his unified school idea. One thing is for sure though, the Keenan Cornelius Atos split surely points out that even the tightest knit teams in BJJ can still fall apart if personalities are too strong.

Not many people are aware of who created the original half guard. Conversely, apart from Eddie Bravo’s lockdown, the people behind different half guard variations are also not exactly BJ celebrities. But, if you ask anyone about the Coyote Half Guard, you immediately get a response in return – Lucas Leite. There’s no doubt whatsoever to who created one of the most effective guards in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In terms of the half guard with the Gi, there is no other variation that even comes close. Now, there’s a brand new Lucas Leite DVD out there on the subject of the Coyote Half Guard. This time though, it is “The Coyote Half Guard No-Gi” instructional. And it is just as awesome as its Gi counterpart.

Lucas Leite is a multiple time world champion that certainly knows his way around the guard. his take on the half guard pretty much revolutionized modern BJJ. Although it may not have been as remarkable as Danaher’s leg lock revolution it certainly didn’t go unnoticed. Talk to any high-level grappler about the half guard and Lucas Leite’s Coyote half Guard is always going to pop up. In fact, it is the best known Lucas Leite DVD to this day. Well, the Coyote half guard No-gi might just take up that mantle now that itis out. Read on and discover why.

Lucas “Loucura” Leite

Checkmate certainly have one o their best ever competitors in Lucas “Loucura” Leite. He is a wild guy that has a very distinct attack-minded style of grappling. He is an extremely slick grappler that is known for beating bigger and stronger opponents on a regular basis. Of course, his main strength is his half guard, particularly the version he developed – the Coyote Half Guard. Leite is a true artist in the Gi, but he is particularly crafty when it comes to No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.  In fact, all of his world titles come in No-Gi.

Leite is a three times No-Gi World BJJ Champion on top of multiple Pans and Abu Dhabi titles. He also has plenty of accolades in the Gi, but not nearly as impressive as his No-Gi record. The 37-year-old discovered Jiu-Jitsu in his native Sao Paolo in Brazil. Like many others, it was that legendary UFC 1 that got him into the sport. Leite started off with Ryan Gracie before switching to Leo Vieira’s gym where he became a fearsome competitor. In fact, it was Vieira who taught Leite the fundamentals of the half guard, inevitably leading to the creation of the Coyote half guard.

As of 2007 Leite is based in the US where he is teaching and competing. To be honest, he is not doing much competing at the moment but we don’t mind as long as there’s a fresh Lucas Leite DVD every now and then. And the Coyote half guard No-Gi edition was precisely what we’ve been waiting for.

The Coyote Half Guard

The Leo Vieira black belt’s Coyote half guard certainly changed how modern grapplers approach this position. That said, once he conquered the world stage with it, he released a Lucas Leite DVD on the subject. It is safe to say it went viral and for a good reason. that half guard variation was the missing link to the high-level half guard game. Given that it was the Coyote half guard that brought Leite many of his titles, many people turned towards it. Nowadays it is pretty much guaranteed that if you end up in a high-level grappler’s guard, it’ll be a variation of the Coyote half guard.

The Coyote half guard is basically the underhook half guard on steroids. Lettie changed just those aspects of it that neede improvement, ending up with the perfect half guard variation. It usually starts with a knee shield until the underhook is in place. The half guard in itself is somewhere in the middle between a deep half guard and a regular underhook half guard. that said, the mechanics are mostly down to the way Leite hooks the leg with his legs. Sweeps and submission attacks are plentiful, as are transition options. Grip fighting is also a major part of Lucas’s half guard game, as is some advanced body movement and positioning.

So far, the Coyote half guard was a bit hard to figure out in No-Gi. that is down to the fact that the first Lucas Leite DVD instructional on the subject was a Gi one. that means t specific grips that are hard to emulate in No-Gi. Well, the answer is finally here, in the shape of the Coyote half Guard No-Gi VD instructional.

Lucas Leite DVD Review The Coyote Half Guard No-Gi

Just like the first DVD set, that was all about the Coyote half guard in the Gi, this Lucas Leite DVD has four distinct parts. Each of them goes over crucial elements of the system, only to bring everything together at the end./ This is a proven way of teaching when Leite is in question, as demonstrated by his Gi Coyote Half guard instructional.  The Coyote half guard No-Gi follows in the same pattern but does expand a little on the previous one.

In terms of organization of the information on the DVD, each part contains a crucial step in the game. For starters, volume one goes over ways to pull or enter into the Coyote half guard. Once there, Leite addresses some defensive aspect to repel the most common attacks. Part 2 is all about sweeping while threatening with double attacks. Part three ventures into positional defense strategies, octopus guard transitions and crucial escape combinations. Finally, Leite wraps it up with some crazy details on many common scenarios, like double underhooks Coyote half guard, countering sprawls, back takes and some live rolling sessions.

DVD 1

The first thing you learn in this Lucas Leite DVD is how to pull the Coyote half Gaurd No-Gi edition. In No-Gi there’s no time to waste and Leite likes to get to the position as soon as possible. From there on, it is all about being comfortable and denying your opponent any attacking avenues. To that extent, D’arce defenses are high up on the agenda. Gi or No-Gi a strong Brabo choke is going to pretty much destroy every half guard. Leite has a simple solution to the D’arce as the most obvious and easily attainable attack form the position. Speaking fo defenses, he also covers great ways to prevent knee slices by transitioning in attacks like foot locks.

The Coyote Half Guard No Gi - Lucas Leite DVD Darce DefenseThe Dogfight position, which is the next crucial stepping stone is also addressed in this volume. Lettie offers a whole host of opportunities here, from sweeping to taking the back and even going for the kiss of the dragon. A brand new tactic is his take on deterring pressure passes and it makes the Coyote half guard that more effective. His take o escaping shoulder pressure works from just about anywhere, not just the half guard.

DVD 2

The second volume focuses on some attacking opportunities. Namely, the first thing Leite likes to do is to get on top. the mechanics of the Coyote guard, mostly the innovative leg hooking system, allow for an easy sweeping opportunity, In fact, it offers plenty of sweeps in many different directions.

The knee shield is the starting point, priding an easy and secure launching pad for attacks. In terms of attacks, Leite sets up sweeps from pretty much anywhere. Whether you like to go up to the dogfight position or pull the opponent towards you with a Russian 2-on-1 Leite has options for you. Moreover, he does not just focus on sweeps. he often mixes them up with crucial submissions like the Dogbar and the Kimura trap. A couple of transitions to the mount and back control wrap up the second portion of this Lucas Leite DVD.

DVD 3

The third part focuses on even more attacks. this time, however, the moves and concepts become much more advanced. Namely, all fo the Coyote Half guard No-Gi tactics so far were easy to use for just about everyone. The stuff in this volume is better for more advanced grapplers though, The reason for this is the transitions into different open guards and specific submission attacks.

The octopus half guard is another forgotten half guard that actually works really well. Lucas has several options from there, giving a new edge to both the Octopus and Coyote half guards. Some crucial counters from this volume open up crazy attacking opportunities no opponent will expect. There are options to prevent the mount, deal with a backpass and even escape side control int the Coyote half guard. The X-guard transition, along with the toe hold it opens up is pure sorcery!

DVD 4

The Coyote Half Guard No Gi - Lucas Leite DVD SampleThe last volume of the Coyote half guard No-Gi Lucas Leite DVD is all about specific scenarios. in essence, it is a Q and A with Lucas already aware of what the common questions are. He covers just about every spot you may find yourself in, from sprawls all the way to defending the weave pass. Some crazy details like the exact angle of knee shield placement also find themselves in this volume. There is also the wiggle-wiggle sweep, which is just as funky as the name suggests.

Capping things off area few live rolls where Lucas does nothing but the Coyote half guard. here he brings everything together, explaining what he did in every situation during the different rolls.

Final Words

There’s something about the Coyote guard’s simplicity that catches even high-level black belts by surprise. When you know how to deter every common counter-attack and launch attacks of your own, you really have a great spot to work from. This was the original intention behind the Coyote Half Guard No-Gi instructional. Moreover this Lucas Leite DVD displays the very moves he sued to win all of his No-Gi world titles.

Most people have the habit of choosing a half guard variation and sticking with it. This is a perfect strategy, particularly for competitors. However, people that manage to develop several different types of half guard that all tie in together, are pretty much unstoppable from the bottom. There’s not a person alive in Brazilan Jiu-Jitsu that doesn’t like the half guard. It is the ultimate backup position for everyone and the go-to spot for plenty of world champions. Whether it is half guard founder Gordo, Bernardo Faria and his deep half or Tom DeBlass’ butterfly half guard, the position works! Moreover, the half guard is pretty much a hybrid of open and closed guards, making it a truly unique position. Lucas Valle is one of the up and coming black belts that have a different take on the half guard than most others. His “Mastering The Half Guard” instructional is something different and we have the most comprehensive Lucas Valle DVD review right here!

Deep Into The Half Guard With Lucas Valle

Lucas Valle might not be a name that immediately makes you think of the half guard. In fact, plenty of people in the BJJ community might not know him yet. That’s perfectly okay, as he is a new black belt that is on a meteoric rise. As this Lucas Valle DVD review will show you, he is a real virtuoso when it comes to the half guard. Moreover, he has the rare ability to play different half guard types with the same efficiency. that makes him an extremely dangerous grappler from the bottom.

Lucas Valle is a grappler who grew up looking at Rickson Gracie fight tapes with his dad. No wonder that at 15 he got into the Gentle Art himself and never looked back. During the process, he discovered the power of the half guard. It is not something that is unknown to us, as it is one of the first “safety” positions people discover in grappling. However, Valle took it much further. He did what only a few other grapplers have ever succeeded at doing. – connect different half guard variations into a complete game.

The Lucas Valle half guard system is actually a very logical one. It consists of all the best half guard variations that are proven to work at the highest level. The real mastery is in the way that he connects them into a working gameplan. Another huge aspect to it is that all positions are low risk and high reward – just the way we like them. Moreover, you need absolutely no exceptional physical qualities to play the Lucas Vell half guard system. All you need is to pick “Mastering The Half Guard” up and follow the instructional. That’s it.

Lucas Valle DVD Review: Mastering The Half Guard

Finally, down to the Lucas Valle DVD review itself. This Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu DVD instructional is a highly specialized one. In terms of the type of instructional, it is a technical instructional for the most part, although there are some key concepts inside as well. The DVD set has four volumes and there’s a pristine organization to each. Technically speaking the video production is sublime, with a clear view and perfect angles that show the essentials of every move. Sound is also flawless,  with Valle speaking a clear and understandable English in a very easy-to-follow style. Each volume has about half a dozen chapters, each explained in a long, comprehensive and detailed manner.

The very first volume starts off with some basic half guard work. The instructional is with the gi so you get a lot of lapel options thrown in there. Most of the chapters focus on gripping and some basic sweeps. Volume number two is all about the deep half guard, and every crazy option you have from there. In volume three, Valle shifts focus towards the knee shield, offering some groundbreaking innovative stuff. Finally, a round of submission finishes and defenses round off the perfect half guard DVD instructional.

#1 Half Guard Back Attacks

From the very first time I watched this instructional in order to do Lucas Valle DVD review, I knew ti was different. First of all, the action starts from the very first second. Lucas doesn’t spend time talking about him or what he has accomplished in Jiu-Jitsu. Since everyone pretty much knows what the half guard is, he doesn’t go into that either. Instead, he begins in the half guard and gets down and dirty right off the get-go.

Luvas Valle DVD Review - Mastering the Half Guard sample tehcniqueThe first order of business is taking the back. However, instead of arm dragging, as most people do, Lucas likes to go for lapel setups. The very first chapter of this DVD contains one of the most effective half guard moves I’ve ever seen. Next up, there’s a section on foot grabs and how they lead to sweeps or back takes. The best part about this mini system is that it works perfectly in both gi and No-Gi. Another huge thing covered in this volume is how to deal with the Whizzer. Once again, both sweeps and back takes are available, from both lapel and foto grab setups.

#2 Deep Half Lapel Sweeps Masterclass

The deep half guard position of the ‘mastering the Half Guard” Lucas Vella DVD actually starts in volume 1.the final chapter of the previous volume talks about entering into the deep half. In volume two, the action takes off from the same spot, going into some versatile and unexpected deep half guard attacks.

What you’re going to get from this deep half DVD are three things. first up, you get some crazy-effective sweep options. From sleeve grip sweeps, through lapel sweeps all the way to the mandatory waiter sweep, there’s everything in here. A second thing that Lucas demonstrates is how to transition to the back position. Instead of trying to hit back takes off the deep half he instead sets his up from the waiter sweep. That way, if the sweep fails, you always have the back take to fall back to.

The final thing that this DVD demonstrates is how to use the deep half to transition into a highly offensive guard game. The guard of choice is the X guard, which is one of the most attack-minded open guards out there.

#3 Re-Discovering The Knee Shield

The knee shield is the most common half guard position people use. It is also the position most people do wrong because of the lack of understanding of it. Well, as this Lucas Valle DVD review taught me, “Mastering The Half Guard” has a solution for this issue. The knee shield can work even against the best in the world if you know how to set it up. For example, there’s’ such an effective and unstoppable knee bar setup in this volume that it is going to make your head spin. Moreover, it opens up a whole host of other opportunities.

Luvas Valle DVD Review - Mastering the Half Guard instructional sampleLucas demonstrates a total of three sweeps form the knee shield position. Those are the bump sweep, coin sweep, and Bernardo Faria sweep. All of the work in a different direction and tie in perfectly with one another. Once you start going, you’re bound to get at least one of the working. Lucas spends a lot of time going over each sweep, that’s one reason why there are only three sweep options from the position. A second reason is that he likes to keep things simple and effective, removing everything that’s excess.

The one thing that stands out from the knee shield is one chapter on the inverted half guard. It is pretty much a Tornado guard variation, one that’s easier and ends up in a very high-percentage sweep.

#4 Half Guard Submissions

The final portion is the real cherry on the cake in this DVD instructional. Here, Lucas offers his favorite high-percentage submission moves that can finish a fight in the blink of an eye. Once again, there are about half a dozen chapters in here, each focusing on a different submission option. The submissions include chokes and armlocks, which, if you factor in the kneebar from the previous volume, mean you have options of just about everything.

The submission bonanza starts with a half guard Omoplata that is a real game changer. In fact, there’s an additional shoulder lock option that ties in perfectly with the Omoplta. In terms of chokes, Lucas keeps things simple. he shows a 100% successful triangle choke. Once you spend enough time drilling this one, you’ll pretty much hit it all the time. It is that good. Wrapping things up is a portion on defenses from the half guard that’ll ensure you stay as safe as possible in any of the variation Valel show in this instructional. With that chapter, we conclude our Lucas Valle DVD review.

Conclusion

All in all Lucas Valle’s ‘mastering the Half guard” BJJ DVD instructional is a real breath of fresh air. It gives a different perspective to the half guard, one which many grapplers miss out on. In fact, most other instructionals seem to forget about it as well. Valle’s DVD teaches you how to connect together the most effective half guard variations in existence. Plus, it dedicates a lot of time to each and every one of them, offering groundbreaking sweeps and submissions! This Lucas Valle DVD review was one I particularly enjoyed doing.

If you’re looking to get an edge over anyone, Gi or No-Gi than there’s hardly anyone better than Neil Melanson. The crazy grappling coach has one of the most efficient and brutal grappling styles in existence today! he likes to stay in No-g, so all of his instructionals are without a kimono. However, they do work perfectly in any circumstance, Gi, No-Gi or MMA. Plus, he is relentless when it comes to releasing everything he has put together over the years in digital/DVD format. Every time a Neil Melanson DVD review is up, I can’t wait to get through the material. This one, though, was a real surprise, even for a hardcore Melanson fan like me.

The “Ground Marshall” Grappling System

Neil Melanson is a former Air Marshall that has one of the richest grappling backgrounds in the sport today. In respect of his Marshalling days and his grappling prowess he has the nickname the “Ground Marshall”. Since he has used the same name for several of his positions (guard and half guard, for example), his complete style can freely be dubbed the “Ground Marshal Grappling Style”.  But what is it exactly?

Well, Melanson is the only man to have managed to create the perfect hybrid of literally all grappling martial arts. He has a black belt in Judo by Gene LeBell, a black belt in Sambo by Gokor Chivichyan and  BJJ black belt from Karo Parysian. Oh, and he has a catch wrestling background prior to getting all his other grappling accolades. you can see how the man has an understanding of grappling that nobody alive can challenge.

Just like his rich background, Niel’s grappling system is the perfect hybrid of many arts. in it, you’ll find the brutality and straightforwardness of catch wrestling combined with the unique traditions and attacks from Sambo. Moreover, there’s a lot of old-school Judo stuff thrown in there, along with the latest and most effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu concepts.  Basically, Neil has a system that covers everything. His bread and butter move is the Triangle choke, which is a reason why he likes to play the bottom game so much. To that extent, the Snap Guard which is the subject of today’s Neil Melanson DVD review is his latest, and most effective bottom concept so far!

“The Snap Guard” Neil Melanson DVD Review

What makes this Neil Melanson DVD so special Well if you do not have any of his other instructionals, or have never read a Neil Melanson DVD review before, let us enlighten you. First and foremost, Neil is an unbelievable teacher. Not all black belts have the gift of being awesome instructors. Neil has no trouble with that whatsoever. in fact, he may just be the most meticulous grappling coach alive today. Whenever he does a grappling instructional he goes all in. He explains things down to the tiniest detail. What sets him apart from others is that he also covers variations of the move and possible alternative directions at the same time.

The combination of Melanson’s grappling style and his teaching methodology also gives his DVDs a specific outline. You won’t find chapters upon chapters in each volume of his work. Instead, you get 4-5 chapters per DVD. However, each one is 15-20 minutes long, and often even more. That means that within every chapter Neil covers a mini system of sorts, rather than just moves and techniques.

“The Snap Guard” DVD has four volumes, each organized in Neil’s specific style. The guard itself is an incredibly attacking one. there’s no stalling or time-wasting here. There’s also a whole host of “illegal” techniques in the form of spinal locks and devastating leg locks. It starts with an introduction in volume 1, followed by some of Neil’s crazy inventions in volumes 2 and 3. Finally, volume 4 goes over some of the nastiest wrestling moves you can use to make the life of BJJ guys and girls a real hell.

Introducing The Snap Guard

Similarly to any other Neil Melanson DVD review, we start things off with a chapter that says “introduction”. However, in the sense of a Melanson DVD, this is a lot different compared to other instructionals. here, he starts off with the idea behind the Snap Guard. What exactly is the snap guard? Well, it is a butterfly guard variation based on the wrestling snap down. As expected, it is the perfect hybrid of the most effective moves from different grappling martial arts.

Speaking of wrestling essentials, the first concept after explaining how the guard works is the Russian tie. This is one of the most effective wrestling moves in existence, one that still to this day works like a charm. Here. Neil uses it from the butterfly guard to take the back, as opposed to the traditional takedown set up. The Ground Marshall Kimura also makes an appearance, as a fallback option. An unstoppable arm-triangle setup from the bottom completes the first experience with the Snap Guard.

Arm Drags And Brutal Finishers

Volume two just builds on the crazy grappling foundations set by Neil in the first part of this instructional. Arm drags take the place of the Russian tie, with Melanson clearly set to use the best wrestling moves to add to the efficacy of BJJ and catch wrestling submissions. Melanson takes the arm drag to new heights by including the butt drag movement. AS far as the most powerful arm drag goes, this is it and it has a brutal tuck choke at the end of it. Just for good measure.

A neil melanson DVD Review: The Snap Guard - sample technique SankakuSpeaking of chokes, this is the volume where Melanson opens up the snap guard submission finishes flood gates. An outside duck, another wrestling staple, opens up a crazy crucifix triangle choke setup that nobody has thought of before. The Neil Knot, that we already know also makes an appearance, along with some brand new modifications. In the end, Neil goes over a pullback triangle setup that’s as surprising as it is effective.

Well, you’ve found them. Before doing the Neil Melanson DVD review of “The Snap Guard” instructional I expected a lot of submissions. however, this particular instructional took even me by surprise. It is not just the sheer number of finishing options but also the incredibly high-percentage of success of all of them. A great example is the Shultz, a new take on an old choke that’ll revolutionize your front headlock game.

And yet, the Shultz is only the beginning. Brand new and completely nuts submissions, like the Butcher shop and the Sankaku spine lock, make their first-ever public appearance right here. And I’m in love with them at first sight! A couple of Whizzer counters also feature in this volume. In fact, they make up about half of this particular DVD. Given the butterfly type nature of the guard, they’re absolutely essential. And, in real Melanson style, they lead right into brutal finishes, an arm crank and a triangle being a couple of examples.

Catch Wrestling Hell

In the final portion of this DVD, Neil certainly goes back to his catch wrestling roots. he introduces some moves that people have been avoiding in BJJ or MMA for one reason or another. That said, they do work perfectly and with a few simple modifications actually, open up a whole host of possibilities.

Neil likes to set it up unusually deep, providing an exceptional pinning option. What comes after that is down to you, or one of the few brutal options Melanson provides. The one move that particularly caught my eye during this Neil Melanson DVD review is the cement mixer. I’ve always loved using it against a turtled opponent from the front headlock. Well, Neil gives it a whole new different dimension, as well as options I’ve never thought of before.

A couple of Neil Melanson signature triangle setups bring “The Snap Guard” DVD instructional to a close. Those are the college roll -side triangle and the footswitch Sankaku.

Final Thoughts

“The Snap Guard” Neil Melanson DVD is a real barn burner of an instructional. To be honest, all of his work is the same. However, there’s something special about this one. It is as simple as grappling can get, yet crazy effective. The moves in this instructional work, and not just some of them! They’re all high percentage and easy for grapplers of all levels to understand. Whether you roll Gi or No-Gi, get this instructional, because, at a certain point, you’ll need what it has to offer.
