Epic Fighting Championship is a promotion whose events we have not encountered so far. This should come as no surprise, as it is one of a number of Russian organizations, and all of them are constantly competing to offer something on a crowded stage that will attract fans to its content. We often see strange combinations and ideas, which is why the Poles are not far behind the Russians. But this time we will stay in the state from which James Bond also left with love.

We have already seen and written about the struggles of men and women. The Poles had this experiment, where they paired YouTubers, influencers, and personalities from similar currents of society. This Russian promotion did it in a very similar way, pairing porn actor Alexander Pistoletov and the so-called “plus-size blogger,” Sasha Mamahu. And it probably wouldn’t have been anything special if we hadn’t seen something that doesn’t otherwise happen.

At one point, while Pistoletov caught his opponent in an awkward position and set out to harm her, one of her friends jumped into the cage and tried to attack Pistoletov. We just don’t know if it’s more impressive the way he tried it, jumping high towards the desired target, or the way the fight referee noticed, reacted, and eventually stopped the intruder in the arena. He later joined the rest of the security and was removed.

The referee decided to return the participants of the fight to the same position and the porn actor quickly finished the job. But that doesn’t matter, we’re still amazed at the referee’s great reaction. Thumbs Up, Master!

How to choose the best Cheap BJJ Gi?

Manufacturer

There are key differences you need to have in mind when choosing the right manufacturer for your new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi. BJJ Gis are built on a scaling formula that ranges from A0 (the minimum) to A6 (the maximum). The Rate Of Shrinkage

The rate of shrinkage is the amount by which the Gi will decrease in length after you wash it. If you’re on the upper limit of a Gi size, this is critical. Buying an A3 shirt may not be a good idea if you find yourself looking at A4 sizes after washing them several times. Nowadays, most Gis are pre-shrunk. However, be cautious since a little shrinkage might still exist. Whenever I bought a cheap Gi I had problems with arm’s length after washing it for few times.

Weave Type

Single weave: This is the most affordable and cheapest Bjj Gi material, and comes only in one finish. In general, this is an excellent training choice owing to its lightweight and long-term durability. However, it can be used in tournaments as well.

Double Weave: This fiber’s density is double that of the single weave one, resulting in a significantly more durable textile while making it considerably heavier and more expensive.

Gold Weave: Gold Weave, which includes both single and double weaving in its composition. In other words, the golden Gi is as lightweight as a single woven Gi but more durable without the extra weight.

Pearl Weave: Single and Golden Weaves are blended together to create a superior level of longevity. It’s also the lightest. You wouldn’t think it has any weight at all, based on how little it appears to be doing.

Ripstop: The material used for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu GI, on the other side, is ripstop. It’s employed in the manner that a regular cloth is reinforced with another substance to make it more resistant to rips and tears. Anyway, this type of material won’t make you Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi cheap. Unfortunately, this is one of the most expensive options when buying a gi.

Correct Gi Size

Even if you’re not buying a gi, the sizing table on the style you’re looking at can still help. And keep in mind that gi measurements are not consistent. The A letter and numerical combination are used by BJJ companies to indicate the scale generally. As an example, see the FUJI Scale of Physical ability below.

The A1 scale is used to indicate the size of a garment. The scale ranges from 0 to 10, with higher numbers representing larger sizes. It means that the wearer’s size corresponds to the garment’s size grade. Although each brand’s A1 will vary somewhat, it’s important to note that one brand’s A1 isn’t necessarily equivalent to another’s A1.

Your choice of the GI should also depend on whether you want to wear it snuggly or baggy. Some professional BJJ athletes debate over whether or not Gis should be washed and dried, or hung to dry is the best option. Some people want their GIs to fit more closely, while others prefer them to be looser. Some individuals wish their GIs were a little tighter, while others would rather have them more loose-fitting. The choice is yours so is the gi size and the way you want to use it wash it.

Gi Color

If you want to compete there are usually only three colors when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi options. The reason behind this is that IBJJF and other Jiu-Jitsu tournaments allow only three colors:

  • White
  • Royal Blue
  • Black

So, when choosing the best cheap BJJ Gis make a good thing whether you’ll compete or not. If you’re 100% sure you won’t compete all kinds of colors and combinations are at your disposal.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Pricing Hacks

Generally, if you do a random search for BJJ Gis on the Internet, you’ll come up with Gi prices that range between $130 – $300. If we take the need for three different Gis as the average, you’re looking at a possible $900 for Gis. Furthermore, these are 900 every few years as well, since Gis will not last you forever, especially if you train a lot. The price can often deter people from buying more than one Gi or guide them in making wrong Gi choices.

There’s another aspect to the issue here. It is the perception of equality in an academy. If most people around you are wearing the latest in a line of expensive Gis, it’s school days all over again. Most probably, you’ll want to do the same as well, which is going to really strain your budget. One solution here is going the Gracie Barra way and using one Gi brand and style as a uniform. This removes the inequality issue by providing everyone with the same option. However, GB’s uniforms, in particular, are on the very high end of the price range at the moment, which kind of defeats the purpose. Plus, having everyone in the same uniform can be just as dull as it can be aesthetic.

The second option is to shop smart. If you take the time to do extensive research, you’ll find that there are great Gis out there for just a fraction of the price. This means you can get a few cheap BJJ Gis and still pay less than you would for one high-end Gi. Moreover, if you know exactly where to look, you won’t get lower quality for your money.

GI Sizes And Material 

Now that you know what is the best possible cheap BJJ Gis for 2022, let’s talk about Gi structure a little bit. After all, we mentioned different types of Weaving above, as well as a bunch of sizes. For those of you that are beginners, or not really experienced with buying Gis, let us explain.

The material most Gis are made of is usually 100 % cotton. Some brands do feature their own blends of cotton, or even mix it up with polyester. The way a Gi jacket is put together is what’s known as a weave. In those terms, there are few weave patterns available – single, double, pearl, diamond, gold, honeycomb, and others. Overview

Despite what the headline might suggest, this instructional has little to do with wrestling as it is commonly perceived by people. Wrestling for BJJ extends far past just takedowns and this Nicky Ryan DVD is the perfect example. The subject matter in this instructional is how to sweep people from seated and supine guard positions. As expected, Nicky has a different approach to sweeps to the pone commonly used in BJJ. Just like everything else the now-defunct DDS guys do.

Nicky Ryan uses a lot of wrestling in his grappling game, mostly in the form of headlocks, arm drags, crescent steps, etc. Now, he demonstrates how to mix it all up with the task of wrestling up from bottom positions in BJJ. It is a really smooth combo of wrestling with BJJ that offers all of the benefits with none of the drawbacks.

Instructor Background

Nicky Ryan is a name that is pretty well known in grappling circles. OF course, he is mostly known as Gordon Ryan’s younger brother and one of the youngest members of the Danaher Death Squad. Nicky is now one of the founders of the B-team along with fellow BJJ celebrity Craig Jones. GOes without saying that Nicky Ryan is a John Danaher black belt.

Nicky started training along with his older brother Gordon when he was 8. they both state in with Tom DeBlass’ academy. He used to train on and off, not really taking things seriously until he saw his brother build a successful grappling career. His training included Danaher methodology from the get-go, and he was beating adults at the age of 13 with ease. Nicky got so much into Jiu-Jitsu that he left school, ending up being homeschooled by John Danaher.

Nicky is also the youngest ADCC competitor, getting invited to participate in the Olympics of grappling at the age of 16. In terms of major titles, he won the ADCC West Coast trials in 2019 and was crowned Polaris champion in 2018 and 2019. He has notable victories over seasoned grapplers like PJ Barch, Dante Leon, Jamil Hill-Taylor, and JZ Calvacante to name a few.

Subject

“Nicky Ryan’s Wrestle Up Series” is a DVD instructional about sweeping by using wrestling moves, in combination with BJJ moves, or on their own. This is the very first Nicky Ryan DVD ever, and a perfect glimpse into the way he approaches BJJ, and his teaching methods.

As the smallest member of the DDS, and facing adult opponents in tournaments since his early teens, Ryan has a very distinct guard style, that he presents in this DVD. His take on sweeping is to use established moves and methods from wrestling, like arm drags, ko uchi gari, ankle picks, collar ties, body locks, etc. Instead of only relying on BJJ sweeps technique, this DVD will teach you how to blend wrestling moves that work from guard positions, and from your knees.

Complexity

While the subject is complex, given the “marriage” of wrestling and BJJ moves, Nicky’s teaching methodology makes it easy to understand. As such it is applicable to everyone, from white to black belt. Nicky does a great job of putting things into perspective so that everyone can find things to learn.

Technical Details

“Nicky Ryan’s Wrestle Up Series” instructional is a three-part BJJ DVD, produced by BJJ Fanatics. It is a No-Gi instructional, and each of the three volumes lasts around 60 minutes. With Nicky being a native English speaker, and the sound quality of the highest level, there’s absolutely no difficulty understanding everything that he is saying.

In terms of the contents, Nicky does show a lot of things but goes over everything in as much detail as possible while staying on the subject. In other words, grapplers of all levels will benefit from this instructional. As usual, those with prior knowledge of stuff like single-leg takedowns and ankle picks (for example) will learn more than complete beginners.

Detailed Analysis

DVD #1

Nicky Ryan starts his very first DVD instructional addressing leg orientation which is a great concept. He demonstrates how to act when in guard depending on how the opponent is placing and/or moving their legs. This is a fundamental concept that the entire “Wrestle Up Series” DVD is based upon.

There’s also a bit on pushing and pulling, a concept I think everyone from the DDS has explained in their instructionals. Seated guards are first up as a launching position of all attacks Nicky shows. It all starts with options when an opponent is standing, which revolve around a double Kouchi Gari, and a bunch of possible follow-ups if it fails. Those options include arm drags, low doubles, and single-leg takedowns, as ways to sweep a standing opponent and get on top.

There rea some back mount entries from Seated Guard as well. The volume ends with a few chapters on the crescent and high steps.

DVD #2

Part two once again starts with seated guards, this time against a kneeling opponent. From this height, Nicky Ryan teaches how to get the neck in order to use the front headlock position for sweeping or back takes.

Some of the things in this volume are snap downs, ankle picks, and a bunch of follow-up Bodylock, double and single leg finishes. I essence, Nicky does a great job connecting the attacks from the previous volume with this one. Whenever an opponent stands up to avoid his kneeling attacks, Nicky immediately switches gear and keeps going. That, I guess is the most important lesson in this instructional – not stopping when you’re looking to wrestle up from guard.

The final portions of the instructional address the overhook position, which seems to be making a comeback into Jiu-Jitsu these past couple of years. Nicky’s attacks of choice from there are Sumi Gaeshi-based overhead sweeps.

DVD #3

The final portion of this Nicky Ryan DVD addresses lying positions, or “supine guards” as he calls them. After resolving some common misconceptions about attacking off your back, Nicky goes into his wrestling moves to sweep people, starting with GSP’s famous double leg setup.

The De la Riva quickly becomes that position of choice in this volume. Ryan shows how to use it to get to the double leg using 2 on 1, knee sweeps, front pommels, and a bunch of other interesting setups. The Reverse de la Riva os of course, not far, opening up a whole new series of attacks, once again centered around the single and double leg takedown. To be honest, most of the takedown finishes are done from what wrestlers call “the low” position, which is how Nicky connected them to BJJ guards and made them work sweeps.

Nicky even covers a few ways to deal with the Knee On Belly position as he wraps up his “Wrestle Up Series” DVD instructional.

Needless to mention that this DVD is yet another pristine BJJ fanatics product. The sound and video quality are at high quality, as is the camera work. Absolutely no complaints in this department.

Quality of Content: 10/10 

COntent-wise, Nicky Ryan delivers a lot on a subject that most grapplers are oblivious about. Wrestlers do not use guards, and BJJ athletes rarely connect takedowns and sweeps. Paradoxical, I know, but true nonetheless. The subject is spot on and will change many people’s approach to attacking with sweeps from guards.

As previously mentioned, everyone can learn from this DVD, as Nicky is truly a great teacher. In fact, I’d go as far as saying he explains and connects things a lot better than Gordon. A small remark in regard to the content would be that there are only three volumes of this DVD. That, however, is I think purely because we’re so used to the 4-volume BJJ DVD format in the last five years.

Another thing which is purely a personal view on things is that I, myself, prefer to sweep a bit more lazily from guards. Nicky’s “Wrestle Up” series will teach you how to sweep even wrestlers and Judokas, but it will mean you need to work for those sweeps. I guess Jiu-Jitsu as we know it is making us lazy, that’s why the ex-DDS guys and everyone with a high work rate easily dominates.

Overall: 10/10

A great resource to open up plenty of opportunities on how to seep people from the guard. As this is a No-Gi DVD, it will work perfectly well in a Gi setting as well, making it truly universal. Oh, and every move shown in this Nicky Ryan DVD is 100% legal for everyone from white to black belt level.

Given that he is retiring after a very successful career in MMA, Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be able to test his skills against current champion Charles Oliveira.

Islam Makhachev, however, is almost certainly one fight away from claiming the title if he manages to beat Beneil Dariush. If he succeeds he will become a legitimate challenger.

In an interview with Combate, Khabib’s and Makhacev’s coach Javier Mendez said that Nurmagomedov and Makhachev would both triumph in the bout against Charles Oliveira. Islam has a superior striking, while Khabib has an edge in grappling.

They are both my fighters and I think they would both be successful in the match against Oliveira. Stylistically, Islam can parry, it has its great kicks and kicks. Khabib is not so great in the stand up so he would probably have to use his grappling. the area was dominated by Charles. ” said Mendez.

It’s really a shame we won’t be able to witness the bout between Nurmagomedov and Oliveira. Khabib is an awesome grappler, especially in the wrestling department, Oliveira is a scary overall grappler for virtually every fighter in the UFC. So, it’s pretty hard to say who would win in that fight.

Overview

To be honest, I am not a big fan of Kaynan Duarte. However, that does not mean I wouldn’t earn from him, go to his seminars, or buy a Kayann Duarte DVD if the subject is something I like. This instructional covers a subject I have been researching lately, and I thought I’d give it a try.

The DVD contains a lot of information that falls under several major BJJ categories in regard to passing the guard. First of all, Duarte demonstrates how to use different passing techniques, like backsteps and body lock passing. Next, he covers how to beat some problematic guards, particularly in a No-Gi setting.

You’ll also see a few interesting innovative passing positions in this Kaynan Duarte DVD, as well as coverage of some really popular and “fancy” explosive passes. You can also expect a few submissions that help guard passing along, or help you end the match right then and there.

Instructor Background

Kaynan Duarte is one of the new breed of BJJ black belt superstars, and he is downright scary. Grappling at heavyweight, Duarte has 14 titles to his name ranging from ADCC and the IBJJF Worlds to Kasai, Third Coast Grappling, and UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro. He is a menace for anyone that stands across him on the mats, Gi or No-Gi. However, without the Gi, he is more than a handful, as he has proven on many occasions.

He is an extremely well-rounded grappler and is dangerous from any given position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, his bread and butter have to be his slick and powerful guard passing skillset. He goes by everyone’s guard in a seamless and effortless way, in the blink of an eye.

Duarte is a black belt under Andre Galvao and competes under the Atos Jiu-Jitsu banner. He has been training since 2010, starting off in Sao Paolo, and picking up in the US from 2016 as a purple belt. Duarte got his black belt in 2018, while on the podium of the IBJJF World Championship.

Duarte is not one that has cruised throughout the BJJ world without controversy. In 2020, he was stripped from the double title he won as a black belt in 2019 as a result of PED use. He was subsequently banned from competing in any IBJJF event for a year.

Kaynan Duarte’s official record is 108 wins and 15 losses.

Subject

This Kaynan Duarte DVD is all about his bread and butter moves for passing any guard out there. Ther is a strong focus on modern guards, and modern counters people use to deal with passes in No-Gi. In four volumes, Duarte covers direct guard passes, counter guard passes, re-counters, and submissions passing.

Complexity

This is a DVD that white belts will struggle with. There are many moves and positions (guillotines, Darces, knee shield, quarter mount, etc.) that most people do not really understand before blue belt. In fact, I’d say that this instructional will mostly benefit experienced blue belts and everyone above that rank.

Technical Details

The “Modern No-Gi Guard Passing” Kaynan Duarte DVD has four volumes, typical of the modern BJJ DVD instructional format. Yet another DVD by BJJ fanatics, which pretty much guarantees solid audio and video.

The volumes in this set have different running lengths, with the first and third lasting around 40 minutes, and the second and fourth nearly an hour long. Kaynan’s explanations are long enough to cover the most important aspects but short enough to allow for people to follow without getting lost.

Kaynan himself speaks quite distinctly, although he has a strong Brazilian accent. It is easy to follow his instructions.

Detailed Analysis

DVD #1

This Kaynan Duarte DVD opens up with a short intro that is quickly followed by the first chapter that addresses the tedious job of dealing with the knee shield during passing. X passes follow suit, as some of the most basic and highly effective passes that you can employ, especially in No-Gi.

The second portion of this volume is all about the two most used passes in BJJ: the knee cut pass and the backstep pass. Most of Kaynan’s focus in this portion is how to get past the half guard.

A guillotine choke threat to pass (or submit) wraps this opening volume up.

DVD #2

In the second portion of the guard passing instructional, Duarte continues to use submissions threats to beat the half guard. The first few chapters in volume two are all about using the Darce similarly to the guillotine – to pass or submit.

A few more backstep options open up an introduction to the quarter mount position. Interestingly enough, I find that not many people use the quarter mount when passing, which is a shame. In this part of his DVD, Kaynan Duarte demonstrates exactly why we need to explore this position further.

Some of the most interesting chapters of the entire “Modern No-Gu Guard Passing” Kaynan Duarte DVD are in this portion. They involve passing from the squat position, which is very useful as it provides lots of control without any particular athletic requirements.

DVD #3

Past the halfway point in this instructional, Duarte presents his favorite ways of dealing with the dreaded butterfly guard. He takes several different routes through, around, and over it, using knee cuts, smash passing, and body locks. Typical Kaynan Duarte passing in the flesh.

DVD #4

In the final part of this instructional, the spotlight is on some attractive guard passing. The leg drag pass kicks things off, done against the knee shield and Reverse De la Riva guard. From there on, things get interesting, and by interesting, I mean acrobatically so. Duarte goes over jumping passes, folding passe, and other interesting and attractive techniques that will certainly get you past any opponent’s guard…if you can execute them.

Considering this Kaynan Duarte DVD instructional technical aspects and quality of content, we come to an overall score for this instructional that I’ll deliberate on in short below.

Technical Quality: 10/10

BJJ Fanatics do not disappoint when it comes to producing BJJ Instructionals. Both the DVD and digital download formats are 100% spot on from a technical standpoint. Sound is clear, the camera work is precise, and the video quality is great.

Quality of Content: 9/10 

Content-wise, this instructional offers an interesting insight into the passing game fo one of the best in the world. With nearly 4 hours of material, there’s no lack of information in this one. Still, there are no long-winded boring tangents either, with Duarte staying on point throughout the instructional.

This Kyna Duarte DVD is not designed in a manner that will connect the first technique with the last one, but it is not hard to figure out how to put things together. In other words, it is a technical instructional focusing on sequences rather than a conceptual and philosophical one.

The complexity of the moves he is showing is not too advanced, but it is going to be confusing if you’re anything less than a blue belt. IN fact, apart from the fact that this DVD is not really suitable for all levels, I’d probably give it a 10 in terms of content.

Overall: 9/10

MOdern No-GI Guard passing by Duarte is one instructional that I’d recommend every guard passer out there gets. The fact that it is No-Gi actually doubles its worth because you can use all the moves with the Gi as well. Totally worth your time and money.

A Kaynan Duarte DVD on guard passing was always going to draw attention. The least we could do si ensure that the instructional actually merits that attention. This one is perfectly structured, precise, and easy to follow. Moreover, it does exactly what the title promises – offers helpful ways in which you can pass guards. Get it!

You’ll never see the UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira outside of the Octagon without glasses.

A kind of trademark of UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is glasses. Because of them, he looks very tame and obvious outside the fight. Many would think that he is a professor or an engineer, not a man who earns his living by presenting his martial arts against people willing to inflict pain on him.

But what exactly is his vision and what happens when he takes off his glasses? It is to be assumed that he needs them since he wears them absolutely everywhere except, of course, in the octagon. Now he finally talked about it, after being asked if he could even recognize his opponent’s face when the fight starts.

“Not that I don’t see the face of the opponent, but I see three faces. If I hit the middle one, I’m good. And that’s fine with me, while there are three fighters, I’m just shooting the middle one. To be honest, I’m a man of great faith in God and it’s not a joke for me. If I take off my glasses, I only see about 50 percent, but that never created a problem for me in the fight, “Oliveira revealed in an interview with the Brazilian Flow podcast, making the audience laugh.

Obviously, Oliveira has not only a vicious “jiu-jitsu” but also a vicious diopter. He did not reveal how much, but it is clear from what he said that she is not insignificant.

The Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro issued a statement where only Jiu Jitsu Black Belts are allowed to teach Jiu Jitsu.

The Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio, also known as Jiu Jitsu Federation of Guanabarais is the governing body of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its president at the moment is Carlos Robson Gracie. This federation controls all teaching certificates for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

“In Jiu Jitsu, only those who can teach are those who have the black belt. Whoever has conquered the band has the authority and knowledge to teach art. Do not forget: the presence of a black belt on the mat is mandatory!”

This is a very controversial decision from Jiu-JItsu Federation Of Rio De Janeiro because it doesn’t take into count regions and even countries where there is no black belts or there are only a few of them. You can’t actually expect someone to travel for miles to take a Jiu-Jitsu class. Also, you cannot expect someone to train somewhere where he is not satisfied no matter which belt is coaching at that place.

What about kids? Children will certainly not train in Jiu-Jitsu at a place that is more than a few hundred yards away from their homes. The situation is the same with adults, students without transportation, etc.

Before Jiu-Jitsu had its rapid international growth there was competition by belts. There were only Beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions in tournaments. It was about your choice where you would compete, but a White belt would usually apply to beginner, blue for intermediate, and Purple, Brown, and Black would apply to advanced levels in competition.

Even then, in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt was always considered an advanced Jiu-Jitsu Belt. Or at least, it’s the beginning of an advanced Jiu-Jitsu level of a practitioner.

We will only take one example of the top trainer who started teaching people as a blue belt and thus qualified as one of the best in the world.. Professor Ze Radiola. He was a teacher of many great names in the BJJ world such as Braulio Estima, Otavio Souza, and many others.

Fortunately, this decision will only apply to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Schools because we are sure that there will be great resistance to the large part of the BJJ community that will not agree with this decision. Just as no one accepted Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Online Blue Belts until they decided to abolish them.
