The Best Closed Guard DVD Instructionals and Digital Releases

There’s nothing that screams “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu” quite like the closed guard position. If they could figure out how to use it as a logo for the sport, I have no doubt it would’ve been there instead of the triangle symbol. The closed guard is the one position that has been effective throughout the existence of BJJ, without ever falling out of favor. That means that you absolutely have to have a closed guard game, even if you’re not a huge fan of the position. In any case, everything you need to learn about it is right here in our guide to the top Closed Guard DVD instructionals.

Since we are using BJJ DVDs to learn everything these days, from leg locks to Berimbolos, why wouldn’t you do the same for the closed guard? Just because it is an old-school BJJ position it doesn’t mean there aren’t some highly effective closed guard DVD instructionals out there. In fact, people have been evolving the position along with the evolution of the sport coming up with some incredible variations of the closed guard that are capable of beating all aspects of modern Jiu-Jitsu. Of course, we feature the most successful ones in our list below, which begins with the top ten best BJJ closed guard DVD instructionals.

The Best Closed Guard DVD Instructionals Collection

The closed guard is truly a powerful position. And no, it is not something that people can deal with easily just because it has been around since the inception of the sport. It just works, whether it is self-defense, BJJ, MMA, No-Gi grappling, or anything else you can imagine where you’d utilize it.

The closed guard works because of two things. The first one is the fact that you have your legs wrapped around an opponent’s waist. This means they can in no way kick you, in self-defense or MMA situation. In pure grappling, it means you control how much they can move the legs. Next up, you control the upper body via grips. It is pretty simple actually – if you can control both wrists, whether it is via Gi or No-Gi grips, you can control an opponent whichever way you want.

The grips and leg positioning means you can control distance, you can set up sweeps, or enter into submissions. Moreover, against skilled opponents that have a strong passing game, you can use the closed guard to transition to other guards or positions, and always fall back to it as your safe spot.

There’s also the security of guard retention that the closed guard offers which is hard to match by any open guard. Simply put, if someone wants to pass your closed guard, they’ll have to open it first, which can be a highly annoying and painstakingly hard thing to do.

Let’s face it, whether it is retention, attacking, or both, you need the closed guard. In other words,s you need to look into the closed guard DVD instructionals we have for you and pick the one (or more) that will fit your game perfectly.

Why Did Disney Really Fire Gina Carano?

Gina Carano fired by Disney

Disney, or rather Lucasfilms, quite abruptly and publicly released Gina Carano from her role in the hit series “The Mandalorian” on February 10, 2021. The former MMA star turned actress was quite unceremoniously pronounced as “no longer being an employee” of the company via social media, which is how she herself got the news. In addition to the reason apparently having to do with the way she phrases her social media posts, her dismissal quickly went viral. But what really happened?

As it seems, the writing was on the wall for some time. Disney pulled Gina Carano from promotional duties in regard to the second season of the popular show, initially because of the wording she used in one of her social media posts.

Namely, over the course of several Twitter posts, Carano expressed an anti-mask wearing stance, while also controversially speaking about voter fraud and apparently expressing herself in a transphobic manner. This led to Carano being pulled off the promotional aspects of the show, and as she declared, even asked to apologize on social media by using a draft supplied to her by Lucasfilms.

Gina Carano, of course, did not accept the terms and issued a statement of her own in terms of the tweets she initially wrote.

“Earlier on last year before ‘The Mandalorian’ came out, they wanted me to use their exact wording for an apology over pronoun usage. I declined and offered a statement in my own words. I made clear I wanted nothing to do with mocking the transgender community, and was just drawing attention to the abuse of the mob in forcing people to put pronouns in their bio” said Carano.

However, after recently sharing a post suggesting that being a Republican today was akin to being Jewish in the time leading up to the Holocaust, Disney and Lucasfilm cut all ties with the former MMA champion, declaring that her posts were “abhorrent and unacceptable”.

“That was heartbreaking, but I didn’t want to take away from the hard work of everyone who worked on the project, so I said ok,” Carano declared. “That was the last time I was contacted about any type of public statement or apology from Lucasfilm. I found out through social media, like everyone else, that I had been fired.”

In fact, it was through social media that Gina Carano herself found out about the dismissal. In addition, production of the popular Cara Dune action figures (a character Gina played in the show) has also been stopped.

Since the incident, Carano announced her plans to produce her own movie, in collaboration with Ben Shapiro and his website The Daily Wire.

The Micro Adjustments That Led To The First Rodolfo Vieira MMA Defeat

Rodolfo Vieira MMA Defeat
With all odds stacked against him, Anthony Hernandez thrived in the underdog role at UFC 258, pulling one of the upsets of the year and leading to the first Rodolfo Vieira MMA career defeat. The most impressive thing is that he not just beat an ADCC champion, he did so by submitting him in the second round via an arm-in guillotine choke!

When Rodolfo Vieira started his UFC 258 bout with Anthony Hernandez, both he and most of the MMA fans watching expected a tough fight, but one the ADCC an IBJJF veteran would ultimately win. Well, Hernandez obviously did not agree with that assessment and put together an impressive performance to tactically outsmart the veteran grappler.

Namely, if there was ever a case for micro-adjustments outside of the realm of memes, it was in this fight. Hernandez tried to exchange strikes with Rodolfo as the fight started, only to be pinned up against the cage and taken down via a double leg that he did not really try to counter.

Vieira quickly passed the half guard and ended up in mount, although Hernandez never really looked in much trouble. When Rodolfo tried to ground and pound, Hernandez trend to turtle, which led to Vieira looking for a rolling armbar that just ended up with both fighters on their feet.

From there on, Rodolfo tried his double leg shot again, with Hernadez clearly adjusting compared to the first one. although Rodolfo got him down up against that cage again, this time Hernandez popped back up quicker.

To be honest that was the first moment that Hernandez showed his then, tying up Vieira in a headlock that ended up spinning him around and having him re-shoot for a takedown. The fight opened up a bit from there, with Hernandez controlling space through striking a bit more. Rodolfo kept shooting for the double, with Anthony adjusting constantly for a better front headlock control, and even a late triangle attempt.

All the action clearly tired Rodolfo, who came in slower into the second round, while Hernandez seemed loser and put together some impressive striking combinations. Rodolfo almost got his back, but Anthony shook him off ending up on top. That is the moment when Rodolfo Vieira MMA career hit a wall.

As he got up to his feet, Rodolfo ate a huge head kick, followed by some impressive elbows and punches that had him up against that cage. Hernandez took his time and the moment Rodolfo shot again, clearly exhausted and leaving lots of space, Hernandez got the front headlock again. Although it seemed like he was setting up a Shultz choke, he quickly changed to a really deep arm-in guillotine and it only took a few seconds to get a tap from the BJJ black belt world champion.

After the fight, Hernandez stated that “he loves eating people at their own game”, while a downbeat Rodolfo called the performance “the worst day of his life”.

bjj drills best dvds instructionals

Will The Andre Galvao vs. Gordon Ryan ADCC Superfight Ever Happen?

Andre Galvao vs. Gordon Ryan ADCC Superfight

Will the Andre Galvao vs.Gordon Ryan ADCC superfight ever happen? it is a tough question to answer, especially given Galvao’s antics lately. it is not like the issue hasn’t been brought up in social media over and over again over the past year or so, but now, the saga takes yet another turn.

Namely, Andre Galvao now thinks his fight with Gordon Ryan should be a million-dollar bout, according to his latest social media posts. The founder of one of the top competition academies in the BJJ world thinks that his participation in an eventual ADCC superfight against Jiu-Jitsu GOAT Gordon Ryan will require a million dollars for him to even consider it.

Of course, both Gordon Ryan and ADCC tournament organizer Mo Jassim both had witty responses to this latest request by Galvao. Ryan stated that “Galvao wants 25x his last payout to fight, maybe he should pay his students 25x to teach classes, which is about $1.50 an hour currently…”

Mo Jassim’s response was ” 1 million dollars is more than the entire revenue for a sell out ADCC 2022, so it ain’t happening. 1 million dollars is 25x increase, that would be the equivalent of Conor going from 10 million a fight to 250 million…”

Clearly, Andre is not getting his 1 million, despite the fans raring to see this particular ADCC superfight. Gordon Ryan won double gold at the last ADCC (the heavyweight division and the absolute) and as such is set to meet the reigning superfight champion Andre Galvao, who has held that particular title since winning at ADCC 2011 (four consecutive superfight wins).

As things stand at the moment, though, it is highly doubtful that this much-anticipated grudge match will take place, at least under the ADCC 2022 banner. Unless, of course, Andre Galvao realizes he is not in the UFC and reconsiders his unreasonable demands.

Especially when we look at the way and against who he recorded a victory. 27-year-old Hernandez submitted Rodolfo Vieira (7-1) in Las Vegas by a guillotine choke in the 2nd round at the UFC 258.

At the beginning of the first round, Vieira did a pretty good job. He immediately took Hernandez down and used his world grappling skills to control and dominate Hernandez on the ground. Vieira first mounted him and tried to apply an arm triangle. Hernandez got out of it into an armbar attempt from Vieira. Somehow, Hernandez managed to escape Vieira’s attacks, and they were back on the feet.

Before the bell sound, Rodolfo was so exhausted and opened up himself for some heavy shots. It was pretty clear he won’t be able to recuperate for the second round.

In round 2 it seemed like Hernandez is all over Vieira. Rodolfo’s takedown attempts were defended by Hernandez, and it was just a matter of time when Rodolfo will stop completely. 2 minutes into the second round and Rodolfo was completely exhausted. He literally stood in the turtle position when Hernandez pulled of a guillotine choke.

We can say that Hernandez pulled off an impossible as no one in the world could even imagine getting Rodolfo submitted according to the facts that he’s multiple BJJ world champion. But, his cardio gave up on him, and it plays a big role. It’s pretty unclear how Rodolfo was that exhausted after the first few minutes of the fight, and we’ll probably get some explanation from him soon.

Anyway, Hernandez is pretty well known for his grappling and submissions in his MMA career. He finished with a submission 6 out of 8 in his PRO MMA fights, but in this fight, he was a 30-1 underdog to submit Rodolfo.

Berimbolo: The Best DVD And Digital Courses

Berimbolo

What is one of the simplest moves to do in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? I guess not many people will answer with “the Berimbolo”. Well, the truth is, the Berimbolo is actually one of the simplest things to do, once you understand the mechanics that make it so powerful. The following collection of the best Berimbolo DVD isnrtuctionals is precisely what will help you achieve just that – look at the Berimbolo as a simple move, instead of a complicated thing only a handful of grapplers can pull off.

Learning Berimbolos is going to be two things – fun and frustrating. You will enjoy the process, but not the time it takes to master one of the most attractive moves in the sport of BJJ. That said, you can shorten the time it takes to figure things out if you understand everything properly from the very beginning. The following Berimbolo DVD instructionals will help, but you will have to put your reps in, and not just in rolling.

The Best Berimbolo DVD Instructionals Collection

What do you look for in a Berimbolo DVD? Well, there are several things a good one should contain, and drills are at the top of that list. If a Berimbolo DVD does not contain a movement portion without partners and fancy lapel grips, then it is not worth your time. Every instructor that really want s to teach you how to do the Berimbolo will focus a lot on movement without a partner before throwing you in the fire.

Following closely behind drills are grips. And yes, I do consider grips to be much more important than hooks during a Berimbolo. Why? Well, it is the grips that both allow for attachment and motion at the same time. That would simply mean that if you have solid inversion and Berimbolo solo drills, and you introduce grips into the mix, you are already more than halfway to finishing a Berimbolo on anyone.

The final part of the puzzle is not rushing. People in Berimbolo DVDs show lots of stuff that might work for them, but in most cases, even they will not use it against the highest levels of grapplers. Why would you want to learn something like that? This does make the selection of Berimbolo DVD  instructionals we have here quite small, but it contains nothing but information on the subject by some of the most famous bolo players ever.

The TOP Pick

There has to be one Berimbolo DVD that stands out from all the rest. How did we choose it? It contains the most information on the subject, it is organized in a way that is easy to follow, and it features the best players in the world!

De La Riva Guard: The Best DVD And Digital Courses

The De la Riva guard is a classic in terms of Jiu-Jitsu guards. It is an open guard variation pretty much everyone uses, whether it is their primary game or not. The guard is reliable and easy to explain but is also so diverse and detailed that it offers people of all levels something to work with. The De La Riva is a guard that works in both Gi and Not-Gi, although it is somewhat more useful when it comes to the Gi game. The De la Riva DVD instructionals we have below will pretty much take care of every aspect of the De La Riva guard that you need to learn.

The Best De La Riva Guard DVD Instructionals Collection

The De la Riva guard is probably the oldest open guard variation in existence. It has been around since people figured out that he closed guard and half guard are not the only guard options. As such, it is pretty much the best example of an open guard you can find.

In the De La Riva guard, you have one leg around an opponent’s leg, which is often referred to as the De La Riva hook. It is the passive leg, or hook leg which you see in all kinds of open guards. It has the task of keeping your inside space safe and keeping your opponent from easily passing your guard.

The other leg is your free leg, and can be placed at different spots, including the hips, behind the knee, on the calf, etc. it is the active leg, tasked with causing imbalances and breaks of posture in your opponent which will eventually lead to successful sweep and submission attacks.

The grips are what makes or breaks the De la Riva guard. In particular, the one grip that goes on the leg that is already wrapped with the hook leg is crucial. The basics are that you should keep your pinky finger as close to the mats as possible, gripping the heel rather than the ankle. However, all the tiny and precise details are in all the De la Riva guard DVD instructionals reviewed below.

The Best Rubber Guard DVD And Digital Instructionals

Flexibility for BJJ rubber guard

If you are a Gi player, you most likely do not consider the rubber guard as an available guard option. To be honest, even most No-Gi folks do not go there, unless they’re a part of the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system, or they are crazy flexible. The rubber guard is actually a great position to use, especially in the sense of preventing guard passes from the closed, or even the half guard. To that extent, apart from that old, original Eddie Bravo Rubber Guard DVD, there are now many resources that cover the position in-depth and make it an option for everyone.

The Rubber guard was designed to prevent people in MMA from being able to punch you. In pure BJJ terms, though, it helps you accomplish two of the main principles of the closed guard – break the posture and close the distance. And no it won’t take you crazy levels of flexibility to be able to get into the position and play it safely, granted, for some of the crazier moves you will need to be pretty dextrous, but you can also develop a mean rubber guard system while being the most brittle grappler in your academy. All you need are the Rubber Guard DVD instructionals below.

The Best Rubber Guard DVD Instructionals Collection

The Rubber Guard is a very interesting guard to have fin with. It offers so many different attacking options that it usually ends ups working purely because people have no idea what is going on. However, that is not the only reason it is effective. The position puts you in a safe spot of sorts, where your guard can not be passed until it is opened up, which is notoriously difficult. Moreover, you get to attack directly from that spot, mostly by manipulating grips and arm hooks.

For those just starting off with the rubber guard, the focus should be on keeping it. It can be a bit tricky in the beginning, seeing as you are holding to one leg with your arm and the other leg is pretty much open on one side while being placed on the opponent’s back or hips. However, there’s a method to the madness here and the position will allow you to enter attacks such as Omoplatas, triangles, and armbars with ease. For the more adventurous you also have Gogoplatas, dead orchards, and a bunch of other craziness that might even take you to rubber mount. Yes, there is such a thing.

The real problem with the rubber guard is who you learn from. Most people that don’t like it usually just have an idea of what it is, and an even worse idea of their capabilities to deal with it. In other words, you need a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu coach, or someone very very familiar with the rubber guard in order to really understand the position to that extent, going for rubber guard DVD instructionals that feature 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu instructors is your best bet to get world-class information on the position.

The best Rubber Guard DVD

The very best resource you can get on the subject of the Rubber guard is of course, one which features the founder of the position, Eddie Bravo as the instructor. This four-part Rubber Guard DVD is basically the holy grail when it comes to mastering this unusual closed guard variation.

The Ultimate Rubber Guard by Eddie BravoEddie Bravo DVD Ultimate Rubber Guard Cover

With huge success in launching Combat Jiu-Jitsu, Eddie Bravo launched a brand new rubber guard DVD instructional as well, focusing on all the changes and improvements he has made to the guard. Given that his latest instructional on the subject was almost two decades ago, it was about time. The instructional has four parts, each covering a different stage of the rubber guard in a progressive and logical manner.

In fact, Eddie Bravo covers the entire evolution of the rubber guard, going over all the original stuff and giving reasons behind the new modifications. He then explores his modern rubber guard, wrapping up with rubber guard variations that also include a rubber half guard.

The List Of Every Rubber Guard DVD Instructional In The Market Today

Following the “Holy Grail” of Rubber guard DVD instructionals by Eddie Bravo, let’s now look at several different ones that are just as useful as our top pick, especially if you already have some experience with the position.

1. Rubber Guard: Concepts From Half Guard by Richie Martinez

richie_martinez_rubber_guardRichie Martinez is one of Eddie Bravo’s best black belts, especially when it comes to competition. Also a breakdancer, Richie has a very original style of grappling and is a true master of the Rubber guard. he is perhaps most versed with it in the entire 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system. That is precisely why instead of focusing on the rubber guard, he has an instructional out on the less utilized, but at least just as effective rubber half guard. This is a DVD that ties in perfectly with all the others that cover the original rubber guard position, providing you with a nasty system to play from the bottom.

2. Rubber Guard: The Meathook by Brandon McCaghren

Rubber Guard: the MeathookBrandon is by far my favorite instructor from the 10th Planet System. He has a real knack for teaching, along with, of course, being as innovative and open-minded as the rest of the 10th Planet bunch. In this rubber guard DVD instructional Brandon covers the meathook, a very specific portion of the rubber guard that allows for even more safety form passing and even easier transitions into attacking.

3. 10th Planet Fundamentals by JM Holland & Zach Maslany

10th Planet Fundamentals DVD - JM Holland & Zach MaslanyThis DVD instructional covers all the drills that 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu gyms use to warm up with. Of course, they involve lots and lots of rubber guard drills, including entries and follow-ups. I’d urge you to look into this DVD only after you’ve established a great base for playing the rubber guard by using any of the other instructionals reviewed above. That said, everyone can benefit from watching this one, regardless of level.

In Conclusion

The rubber guard is a fun tool to have in your arsenal. it will help you surprise people and get out of tough spots if you plan on using it only occasionally. If you’re planning on developing an entire game around it people will pretty much be clueless about what to do with it once caught inside. The rubber guard DVD instructionals we reviewed above are literally all you need to develop the meanest rubber guard game outside of actually training full time with one of the instructors from the DVDs.
