The two most recognizable aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are the guard and what the top person can do about it, which is passing. Both are crucial for success in the sport and there is no way around them (yes, even with leg locks) but what most things people don’t realize is that you can’t train them together at the same time. Or can you?

The BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle offers an incredibly deep insight into how Mikey built his guard and passing game with the Gi. Focused mostly on No-Gi these days, the ONE flyweight World Champ shares how to approach guards from top and bottom, building complete games by understanding the demands of your position and the threats of your opponent.

Everyone’s Favorite Flyweight

There’s no way you can watch Mikey Musumeci and root against him. The truly undisputed ONE Flyweight Grappling World Champion has stepped inside the cage a total of 6 times so far. All his efforts on the mats led to victory, with 4 out of his 6 matches coming by way of submission, and those were all title defenses.

Prior to resigning at ONE, Mikey already had an impressive record of 59 wins and only 5 losses, with 27 of his wins coming by way of submission. The charismatic 28-year-old has just about every title to his name with 5 IBJJF Worlds, 2 European, 1 Pans, 1 Abu Dhabi World Pro, and 1 American Nationals. The only thing missing is ADCC and/or CJI if it keeps its momentum going forward.

“Darth Rigatoni”, as Mikey is known due to his extreme fasting Italian-food-based diet, has been busy recording world-class instructionals while in between fights. Since we don’t get to see him defend his title against CJI winner Kade Ruotolo, on account of an injury to Kade, we can at least look at the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle.

What’s In The BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle?

If I had to pick one resource to practice Gi-based guard attacks and passing, it would be the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle. Musumeci keeps things simple while covering every aspect of both passing and guard play for Gi Jiu-Jitsu in nearly 8 hours of material spread over 10 volumes, organized in two different instructionals.

Foundations of Guard Attacking DVD – AVAILABLE HERE!

BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle Guard

Subject Matter: The first out of two DVDs in the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle contains Mikey’s complete guard game for Gi Jiu-Jitsu. He focuses on guard attacks more than anything else but also shares awesome structural advice to ensure retention and optimal grip placement.

Key Points Covered: There is a wealth of information inside this Mikey Musumeci guard DVD, as ‘Darth Rigatoni’ goes over his interpretation of guard priorities, before covering absolute basics such as how to hold grips, the end goal of playing guard and the principles of posture.

Before going into tripod and overhead sweep attacks Mikey also shares crucial concepts like alignments, box attacks, and breaking base. Once the attacks start rolling, Musumeci just builds on them, adding more and more but connecting everything in attack chains as he goes.

Guards in this series cover the Spider Guard, De la Spider Guard, Collar-Sleeve Guard, and classic De la Riva. Throughout the instructional, Mikey outlines how he drills all the material he presents, as well as how he’d like you to approach drilling

Understandably, submissions feature heavily as well, mostly in the form of triangle chokes, Omoplata setups, armbars, and endless ways to connect the three in chains.

Technical DVD specifications: Mikey makes the most out of 6 volumes in this DVD, providing just under 5 hours of super valuable material for Gi Jiu-Jitsu guard play. While it does contain guards some people see as advanced, Mikey only shares the foundational principles that make each technique work in a simple way.

BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle passing

Subject Matter: The second, and last, part of the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci Bundle shows what the top person should focus on against the most popular Gi guards in the sport. Before covering actual passing, Mikey demonstrates how to kill guard attacks while on top without sacrificing pass opportunities.

Key Points Covered: Once again, Mikey starts his instructional answering the most basic of questions, along the lines of ‘What is guard?’, and ‘What is control?’ and outlining the two foundational types of guards people play.

He then goes over a 3 step process of breaking the structure of any guard, offering alternative routes and adaptations to standing, half-kneeling, and kneeling top positions. This sets the stage for some actual passing, which Mikey shares from the perspective of different guards.

First up to solve this part of the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle is the collar-sleeve guard, followed by the spider guard, lasso guard, and the knee shield half guard. For each, Musumeci defines threats to be wary of, as well as how to apply the 3-step process to deal with them.

This instructional contains lots of situational scenarios which are super common during guard-pass exchanges in grappling. Mikey does a great job of laying the foundations that will get you past any guard, while also demonstrating the most common problems you’ll face, and offering simple solutions.

Technical DVD specifications: The final portion of this BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle contains 4 different parts, each with a different running time. The total length of material is somewhere around two and a half hours, and this is yet another Gi-only instructional in this collection.

A ‘Strange’ Way to Understand BJJ Guards

There are different methods of learning sports, and as BJJ evolves, many of these proven and unproven methodologies seep into the sport. One that I found makes a lot of sense, even though it sounds strange when you first hear about it is to do the opposite of what you’re trying to develop. At least at the beginning.

Let’s say you want to learn guard. Start by gunning for the top position first and passing as much as you can. Spending a few months doing passes is going to give you a perfect understanding of what the bottom person is doing that works, and what they should do to be even more effective. Armed with this knowledge you can then start playing guard.

This approach works the other way around as well – to learn passing, start by playing guard a lot for a few months. It makes it easy to understand not just what you need to do, but also what you’re up against, as you begin with a clear idea of what your opponent’s goals are.

The drawback of this method is that you won’t learn fast. You will, however, learn better, and in time, that turns out to be a very well-worth investment, since you’ll actually develop two skills instead of just one. The method works incredibly well for everything in BJJ.

When it comes to playing guard and passing guard, as long as you train exclusively with the Gi, the BJJ Foundations Mikey Musumeci DVD Bundle offers everything you need to set up either of these aspects by exploring its opposite.
