Chael Sonnen: Bruce Lee Could Not Fight At All [VIDEO]

Chael Sonnen: Bruce Lee Could Not Fight

Chael Sonnen, the bad boy of combat sports is back at it again, this time taking jabs at Bruce Lee. According to Sonnen, the legendary martial artist’s philosophies hold up, as everything he claimed turned out to be true, but at the end of the day, Bruce Lee never really fought professionally so nobody can know how good of a fighter he really was.

A Twitter Comment That Started The Rant

The entire Chel Sonne rant about Bruce Lee was inspired by a Twitter comment. According to a comment Chael got, Bruce Lee never really fought, was not a world champion, and did not risk anything, so he can not really be called a fighter.

Admittedly, there is logic to this way of thinking.

According to Sonnen, many professional fighters who never made it to rankings or titles would beat up Bruce Lee “real bad”.

Sonne did give Lee props about his philosophy, as he was the only one in the late 60s that advocated training many different arts at the same time. Such thinking was revolutionary for the time. Bruce Lee’s take was that training in such a way is the best way to prepare for a real unarmed situation.

However, it did not work that way. People did not cross-train back then because they thought that they were all learning the best possible art and learning secrets directly from “grandmasters” themselves.

Chael shared a funny story from his bouncing days about a colleague he had named James who claimed he was training a secret martial art at a kung fu gym where an 83-year-old woman beats anyone in the gym.

Understandably, Chael found such thinking amusing, to say the least.

Chael Sonnen’s Reasons Why Bruce Lee Couldn’t Fight

Back to the point about Bruce Lee actually not begin able to fight for real, Chel’s further elaboration on the subject goes along the lines of “I can kill you in seven different ways with my thumb”.

People training “secret” and ‘deadly” techniques in controlled settings only and never ever testing them live just means they’ll get beaten up when and if they try. The evidence backs this up.

“if you are training, and you’re not exhausted and ripping in sweat, it is for nothing. you’re not doing anything that needs to be respected,” says Chael Sonnen.

To further reiterate his point Chael asks when have we seen BJJ guys and wrestlers succumb to a groin strike or punch. The answer is never. They’d never do it.

Chael Sonnen actually puts Bruce Lee in a category of trained actors, along with the likes of Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris, although he admits Chuck has a competitive background in point-striking.

That said it is difficult to disagree with him. All of these martial arts icons of Holywood did not compete in the octagon cause it didn’t exist yet, but they did not achieve much outside of it either.

They were part of Hollywood stories, and nothing more. Bruce Lee was the same, an actor trained in martial arts, but not a real fighter.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gi and Jiu-Jitsu Gi in 2024 – Reviews

Best Lightweight BJJ GI Guide 2019

Training BJJ in the Gi is a truly unique experience. It is not that much the fact that you’re wearing the Gi, but the feel of the material and how it is used. In terms of feel, the first time you wear a BJJ Gi is not something most people associate with comfort. A Jiu-Jitsu Gi consists of an extremely sturdy and hard jacket, and thick, multilayered pants. The way Gi’s are woven is also highly specific. This is all very understandable, given the amount of “abuse” a Gi needs to be able to take. However, it doesn’t change the fact that training in a durable Gi is like trying to roll with a heavy blanket on. There is, however a hack – lightweight Gis. Today, we’ll take a look at the best Lightweight BJJ Gi options that can replace all your other kimonos.

Thinking a lightweight BJJ Gi is not going to be able to withstand the demands of training? think again. When we’re talking about a lightweight Gi, we mean a modern design, state-of-the-art one, not an Aikido Gi. More on that later. For now, it is enough to understand that you can both feel light and comfortable and train BJJ with a Gi that’ll last. yeah, I didn’t believe it either until a short while ago. Completely by chance, I acquired an ultralightweight Gi (featured later in our best lightweight BJJ Gi guide) and it changed my grappling life. Suddenly, I could train and roll wearing something that resembles a rashguard more than it does a kimono. And yet, it is proving to be just as tough and durable as the stiff and uncomfortable ones.

The Lightweight BJJ Gi

When it comes to the best lightweight BJJ Gi, the list is not as short as you might think. Basically, every larger BJJ Gi manufacturer out there has at least one lightweight series available. Completely understandable too, given how different training in one is.

Lightweight GIs are the latest product of an ever-growing industry. The real challenge with a BJJ gi is durability. Given the price of kimonos, it’s understandable that people like to buy stuff that lasts, preferably for years to come. On that note, the logical thing is to go for the tough, sturdy, Gi that weighs a ton and is hard to move in. Plus, you need to factor it in whenever you weigh in for the competition. If you cut weight to grapple, then you know how much of a hassle that is. And this is all before we talk about training in hot weather. The need for a lightweight Gi that has all the same properties of a heavy-duty one, but none of the drawbacks was just a question of time. Luckily, manufacturers responded to the need for such a kimono.

The weave used in a lightweight Gi is usually a pearl one. It is the lightest Gi weave that’s allowed for use in IBJJF tournaments. To be fair, there are also single-weave ultra-light GIs, but they do not last nearly as much as others. The pearl weave allows air to pass through and does not impede the range of motion while offering amazing tensile strength. Finally, there is the Hybrid weave Gis, meaning combinations of weaves that deliver the best possible Gi both in terms of performance and weight.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gi

In reality, everyone needs at least one lightweight Gi. Even if it’s just for competition, it is going to change the way you approach Jiu-Jitsu. Plus, the price of lightweight GIs is far more affordable than that of double-weave heavy-duty ones. In order to facilitate the next Gi shopping spree, we compiled a list of the best lightweight BJJ Gi options that are readily available in 2024. They’re becoming increasingly more popular though, so you’ll need to get a move on if you’re going to get yours.

Aeroweave Ultra Lightweight Gold BJJ Gi Review

Rolling Light – The Advantages

The reason we’re looking for the best Lightweight BJJ Gi is that nobody likes to train grappling in armor. However, apart from comfort, there are a few other considerations when sometimes too lightweight kimonos. They don’t just help us get through training easier but also help us “cheat” the system a bit.

Namely, in competition terms, a lightweight Gi will allow you to have a much more relaxed weight cut if you need one at all. In comparison, regular Gis are twice as heavy. While not cheating per se, they do help you turn tournaments into more enjoyable experiences. Plus, competing in them is a lot more comfortable.

From a technical standpoint, lightweight GIs are much easier to manipulate. This means you can use lapels, collars, sleeves, etc to attack your opponent. You’ll be able to access your favorite Gi weapons much more easily than with regular Gis. Plus, people won’t be able to control you as much, because lightweight Gi’s are harder to manipulate with grips. There are also movement restrictions, which are non-existent with lightweight GIs. it is basically like rolling/competing No-Gi but with all the benefits of GI Jiu-Jitsu.

On a final note, there’s climate. In my opinion, lightweight GIs are not just the best, but the only option for people living in warm spots. Training with a full-on Gi in 95+ degree weather is neither fun nor reasonable. Lightweight GIs not only alleviate some of the discomforts but also provide much better ventilation than heavier GIs. Anyway, if you’re looking for the best jiu-jitsu GI of all weights check out our Best BJJ GI article.

Your best (and most affordable) options for 2024 are listed below.

A knee brace can save your life! Well, ok, perhaps not your life, but certainly your Jiu-Jitsu career! Take it from someone coming back off a serious knee injury. Rest and rehab are fine and they’re essential pieces of coming back to full health. However, getting back to the gym only once you’re fully healed and cleared to go without any support is something none of us grapplers have the patience to see through. So, coming back to the train means you need some heavy gear to make sure your knees stay safe. Of course, you also want to be able to move as much as possible and have support, particularly in the area of movement associated with your injury. Our selection of the best BJJ knee braces for 2024 covers all of the above, and then some! Check them out!

Knee Injuries in Jiu-Jitsu

Injuries in Jiu-Jitsu are a normal thing, just as in any martial art. Trauma to the small joints of the fingers and toes is arguably the most prevalent. Neck injuries are also very common, but I do think knee injuries can give them a run for second place. I do not have precise statistical data, though, nor does anyone want to see it. We all know knee injuries happen in grappling, Chances are you know someone who has one, or you’re dealing with one yourself.

On the subject of knee injuries, we can basically deliver trauma to every possible structure of the knee when we’re grappling. Sudden movements in an inward or outward direction easily tear the collateral ligaments (LCL and MCL) on each side of the knee. Twisting motions under pressure and weird angles, which are ample in Jiu-Jitsu, are the main culprits behind ACL/PCL injuries to ligaments on the inside of the knee. The best BJJ knee braces are highly useful in such cases.

The menisci or cartilage of the knee also gets a beating in BJJ. Although they’re spared from the usual trauma of standing martial arts, they’re exposed to much more severe trauma. Triangle chokes and all similar positions can easily damage a meniscus, given that they’re always done against resistance. A whole myriad of sweeps also has the potential to destroy any of the two menisci present in the knee.

Finally, there are much rarer but difficult to come back from tendon and muscle injuries. Patellar tendons are the most likely to suffer, although tendons of larger attaching muscles also sometimes snap. Knee-related muscle trauma is rare and usually accompanies serious ligament and/or meniscus damage.

Knee Support

The dangers of coming back from a knee injury too soon, or rolling without the help of one of the best BJJ knee braces are potentially devastating. If you’re careful, re-injury of the same structure is not very probable. However, favoring a certain part of your knee, or training with one that’s not strong enough results in trouble for other structures in your knee. For example, if you injure your LCL, and come back too soon, you’re very likely to also tear your ACL. The reason for this is that favoring your knee for certain motions puts more strain on other structures. it also means can end up with a useless knee and wave goodbye to sports. In severe cases, you might even end up injuring the opposite side knee as a result, of your ankle or hip, as a result of compensation.

While some people still think knee braces are giant pieces of equipment that impede movement, you know from our guide above that this is not the case. A solid knee brace means you can move freely while making sure that your knee has the support it requires. Even better, you can now go with a knee brace that supports all knee structures, or a highly specialized one. Whatever the case, you now know which are the best BJJ knee braces and where to get them!

Wrapping Up

Choose whatever you need, from specialized and lightweight to complete protective gear that’ll keep both your knee joints safe from further injury.

As a final note, make sure you’re not wearing a brace at all times (apart from the period right after an injury). This can make your knee musculature weaker. Instead, use the brace only when you’re training/rolling, and forget all about knee pain!

Actually, despite its thickness, the Sanabul belt stays firmly in place even during particularly scrambling rolls.

Another feature this belt boasts of is the material. It is made from antifungal and antimicrobial fabric that’s going to keep your belt germ-free. Still, this is no excuse to wash it regularly!

Gameness BJJ Belt

Gameness BJJ BeltAlthough Gameness has the reputation of making particularly sturdy Gis, this is not the case when it comes to belts. Their line of belts feels unusually soft at the touch. While this is unusual, it is an advantage. The softer structure of the material makes Gameness belts virtually impossible to untie.

The material in Gameness belts is ultra-high-quality cotton, and they come in all the usual BJJ colors. As soft as they are, they’re extremely durable and strong. Wear and tear on these belts only shows up after a considerable time of extensive use. The colors are also very deep and distinct, plus they’re resistant to fading as a result of washing. That’s one less excuse for not washing your belt! An additional feature that merits mentioning is that the belt is a bit narrower than others, which only adds to its value as a belt with a near-perfect knot.

Venum BJJ Belt

Venum BJJ BeltSimilar to Tatami belts, there’s hardly a way to do the best BJJ belts review and not include Venum belts. Venum is one of the leading companies when it comes to BJJ-specific gear, from Gis to belts and No-Gi stuff. The belts that Venum offers are 100% cotton of very high quality. These belts are of a thicker variety, similar to the Sanabul ones.

These belts are as durable as any on our list of best BJJ belts. they come in all usual colors and are resistant to fading. Venum usually includes a free patch as a gift with every purchase, if you do not have enough reasons to get one of their belts. Expect the belt to feel rigid in the beginning, but it won’t take long to break it in.

Hypnotik BJJ Belt

Hypnotik BJJ BeltThis one is a real treat. As far as BJJ belt materials go, Hypnotic belts are original. They’re made out of the same material that Hynotik Gis are made of. That in itself guarantees durability and quality. They do feel strange at first and are somewhat wider compared to other Jiu-Jitsu belts.

As far as durability goes, the material is a pearl weave Gi material, so forget about this belt ever falling apart. It’s also never going to come undone during rolling or competition. One thing that you should be aware of, is that it does shrink a bit with washing. So, if you’re about to get one, opt for a slightly longer version than what you regularly choose.

Fuji BJJ Belt

Fuji BJJ BeltAnother BJJ classic, along with the lines of Venum and Tatami. Fuji is one of the most trusted Gi and belt companies in existence. Fuji’s belt might be considered the gold standard for the best BJJ belts. They are cheap, good quality, and soft yet tight when tied. They also come in all possible Jiu-Jitsu-related colors, albeit at a lighter version compared to most others.

Also, IBJJF approved, that getting a Fuji belt has no drawbacks whatsoever. The belt withstands washing and repetitive use without problems. They’re even pre-shrunk so they won’t get any shorter regardless of how often you’re washing them. Overall, Fuji is one of the all-time best BJJ belts out there, still holding onto the mantle in 2024!

Revgear BJJ Belt

RevGear BJJ BeltThe Revgear belts are usually belts people have as backups. The main reason for this is not a lack of quality, but the price. The Revgear belts are the cheapest on our list, meaning they’re affordable enough to own as a second belt.

Every Revgear belt is made of cotton and comes at a standard width of 1.5 inches. Lengths are the same as Gi sizes, and it comes in an extended range of colors. This is yet another very durable belt that is going to last you a long, long time. Considering the quality they come to, it is more than the perfect second-best option.

Hayabusa Unisex BJJ Belt

Hayabusa Unisex BJJ BeltAs if all other belts are not Unisex, the Hayabusa is a belt obviously appropriate for both sexes. The true value of this belt, though, is in its construction.

The Hayabusa is a particularly sturdy belt example, with reinforced stitching along the full length of the belt. Moreover, it’s made out of gold-weave material, which means it’ll last you a lifetime at least. For such a reinforced and tough belt, it comes at a surprisingly lightweight.

Ronin BJJ Belt

Ronin BJJ BELTRonin belts are the best-looking of the bunch, at least when it comes to color. The stitching is usually a different color than the belt, giving it a very unique appearance. A strong and flexible belt, that is great for both training and tournament use.

The price of Ronin belts is not as cheap as some of the others, but it is worth it. These belts are not just stylish but can also take a beating. On top of everything, they make one of the best knots I’ve personally tied on a BJJ belt, period. Worth checking out and a great option to use for competition, while reverting to something like the Revgear for regular training.

Vulkan BJJ Belt

Vulkan BJJ BeltTo wrap things off, we’ll go over the belts that one of the cool old Gi companies has to offer. Vulkan Gis are some of the best you can own, especially if you like to compete regularly. This belt comes out of the packaging smooth and flexible, without any rigidity whatsoever.

Six rows of stitching make it a very durable option. Scramble belts are thick, soft, and fit perfectly from the first moment. They’re safe to place in the washer and are guaranteed not to shrink even slightly. All colors are available, and they’re IBJJF-approved. The price of VULKAN belts is usually a bit above average unless you use the best deals available for Vulkan BJJ belts!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belts

The deal with belts in martial arts is pretty straightforward. In the beginning, all belts were white and had a very simple task – hold the pants up. In feudal Japan, as people spent years training their art, their belts got dirtier and dirtier, turning into “black belts”. Later on, Judo’s founder Dr. Jigoro Kano adopted the practice of white and black belt ranks. In the coming years, he improved on it, introducing other colors for a clear way of ranking someone’s skills. The Gracies then adopted and slightly modified, this basic Judo system of belts to fit the needs of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Grading in Jiu-Jitsu is a bit simpler than that of modern Judo or Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. At least when it comes to adults. There are 5 belts that you need to get through to get to a black belt. Those are white belts for beginners, followed by blue, purple, and brown belts respectively, for advanced students. Black is the belt of mastery, but far from the final one. Beyond it, there are two coral belts and the real peak of Jiu-Jitsu – the red belt. To be real, a black belt should be your one real aim in Jiu-Jitsu, as there are some huge time requirements for earning some of the coral belts.

The earliest age at which you can get a blue belt is 16. Until then, you can go through the kids’ belt ranks, which start as early as four years of age. They feature an additional 5 belts (white, grey, yellow, orange, and green) before graduating to a blue belt. From there on, about two years per belt is the average, meaning the earliest you can earn a black belt is after about a decade of training.

BJJ Belt Characteristics

From a technical perspective, there are certain things you need to know when you’re looking for a belt for you. The best BJJ belts have the common trait of excelling in each one of the following categories.

First of all, uniform size. Belt length usually coincides with the size of your Gi. So if you wear an A3 gi, for example, an A3 belt should be a good fit for you. The thing is, just like with Gis, different belts that are “same sized” are very different. A smaller or bigger belt size might be more appropriate for you than the one that’s identical to your Gi size. Furthermore, once you choose your favorite brand of belt, it is key that with each following purchase, you get a belt that’s the same size as you desire. Make sure you read the size charts every time you go shopping for a new belt.

When it comes to color, you might think there’s not much to it. Well, if you check some of the best options out there, you’ll see that you can easily get confused. With some brands, blue and purple are so close that you might have a really hard time differentiating them. Make sure the belt you choose has a distinct color and shade.

When it comes to the thickness of the belt, you need to be aware of two main aspects. The first is comfort and the second it knot tightness. In terms of comfort, you’ll need to try on a few different belts to know which thickness is the perfect fit for you. As for the knot, expect it to come undone with every belt. the thing is, some belts provide a much more secure knot than others.

Choosing The Right Jiu-Jitsu Belt For You

Before we go on to explore what the best BJJ belts are and where you can find them, let’s look at a more individual aspect of selection. The first thing to have in mind is the training experience. If you’re a beginner you should either ask an instructor or better yet, follow the suggestions we’re about to offer you. If you’re a more experienced student then make sure you know what you’re looking for in a belt. Comfort, length, potential tournament use, fabric, thickness, etc.

Your style of grappling is also a big determinant of the type of belt you choose. If you like to rely on using your own lapels for attacks, for example, you might want a belt that’ll release your Gi easily. On the contrary, if you like to prevent people from easily accessing your Gi, you need a tighter fit. If you’re a competitor, make sure you follow the Gi rules so that you do not need to buy another belt on the spot.

Finally, consider the idea of having two belts. One can be for regular training, and it can be the most comfortable version of a belt for you. the other should be a more “official” one, for seminars competitions, etc.

Conclusion

The belt is a huge part of BJJ, and every belt you wear is going to be with you for years. Considering this, it is advisable to get a belt that would last and do its job perfectly. Our Best Belts guide has options for everyone, from recreational grapplers to competitors! Choose your favorite and never worry about belt issues again!

2 Worst Belts For BJJ Imposter Syndrome (And Dealing With It)

BJJ imposter syndrome

BJJ Imposter Syndrome is a feeling people sometimes get right after they are promoted to a new belt, and it involves feeling anxious like you do not belong at that level.THe feeling is completely normal and there are 2 main periods in BJJ where people get it – at purple and black belt.

Purple Belt BJJ Imposter Syndrome

BJJ imposter syndrome at the purple belt is a feeling of anxiety and identity issues. Purple belt is when people involved in BJJ become actual experts in the sport. As the saying goes, “a purple belt knows every technique that a black belt does”, purple belts move and feel comfortable on the mats.

As such, they are often the obvious example for a white belt to look up to. Beginners usually both admire purple belts and aspire to be like them, given that achieving a purple belt looks like a much more tangible goal compared to the decade-removed black belt.

The BJJ imposter syndrome comes a lot due to this idolizing of purple belts. When a person gets to the purple belt level, they feel like they are not nearly s good as the purple belts they’ve been idolizing, who by, then, are most likely black belts and are the ones who have promoted them to purple belt.

That breeds a feeling of insecurity in one’s skills and doubt as to whether you are qualified to be a purple belt.

The key to overcoming BJJ imposter syndrome at the purple belt is to avoid doing personal comparisons. By now yo know Jiu-Jitsu is very individual and instructors have good reasons to promote people, even when they do not feel like they deserve the belt.

An easy method to make sure you quickly get over your BJJ imposter syndrome is competing at your new belt level, as well as going to camps, seminars, and open mats in other gyms. Once you see how you fare against other purple belts you’ll understand that you belong there without a doubt.

BJJ Imposter Syndrome At Black Belt

At black belt, everyone gets anxious. BJJ imposter syndrome hits hard at that level, much harder than at purple belt. Getting a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a big deal, even if people often downplay the importance. It is a clear symbol of the dedication and time you’ve spent on the mats, which is where its value comes from, rather than how many techniques you know or who you can perform them against.

The truth is that everyone values their black belt, despite what they may say about belts not being important.

Black belt  BJJ imposter syndrome hits when freshly promoted black belts compare themselves to the top black belts in the BJJ world, the ones that seem like they have been black belts since  BJJ started. Of course, someone who got a black belt in 2022 is not going to be at the same level as Marcelo Garcia, who has been a black belt for 22 years.

Being a black belt does not automatically mean you’ll beat all other black belts, or even be able to hang with them. The instructor who gave you your black belt was most likely already a black belt 10 or so years ago when you started, so there’s no need to compare your inexperience at the new belt level to his experience and be all anxious about it.

Once again, participating in competitions, going to camps, and visiting other academies for rolls will show you your true level. It will help you understand that BJJ imposter syndrome is only in your head.

Any time you do something that pushes you to the edge of your comfort zone, you’re discovering who you are and what’s possible. It is understandable to be unsure when something is new., but here is real value in embracing it, which will make you grow and actually get better quickly at your new belt.

And you will start to like going to the edge of the comfort zone, and even over it. As a black belt, you’ll have to keep doing it to avoid the BJJ imposter syndrome anxiety from coming back.

As long as you give 100% the feelings of confusion and identity issues will resolve, and you will understand why you got promoted. You are usually thought, going to be the last to understand why you got the belt that you did when you got it.

Conclusion

Having BJJ imposter syndrome is actually a good thing. It will help hold you accountable to a very high standard and in front of yourself, your teammates, and your students. The goal is to work hard constantly, and not just achieve that standard, but surpass it. Enjoy the process, and do not give in to the imposter syndrome – it will pass, but your belt rank is here to stay.

Alex Pereira Calls Out Khamzat Chimaev For A Brazilian Folk Wrestling Match

Alex Pereira Calls Out Khamzat Chimaev in Brazilian Folk Wreslting
Alex Perira, the new middleweight UFc champion, coming fresh off the defeat of long-time champion Israel Adesanya, has been teasing UFCwelterweight Khamza Chimaev with callouts lately, the last of which is to a Brazilian Folkstyle wrestling match in Huka-Huka.

Khamzat Chimaev, although fighting in the welterweight divisions of the UFC, is seen as a contender for Alex Pereira’s new middleweight title. The two have had a feud going on, with Pereira disclosing not long ago that Chimaev rejected a fight with him at light heavyweight in Brazil in January of 2022.

Just recently, Alex Pereira took part in a traditional folkstyle wrestling event in Brazil in what is known as Huka-Huka to the indigenous people. As he did, he showed some takedown defense skills and used the occasion to tease Khamzat once again, saying:

“Chimaev trying to take me down.”

Khamzat was not far behind though, in responding:

“This is your level” and adding a bunch of laughing emojis to reinforce his point.

Huka-Huka is an interesting indigenous folk style of wrestling common to the people of Xingu from the Mato Grosso region. During the ceremony of Kuarup, the fighters start on their knees, and one fighter, usually with the title of chief, calls the start of the match. THen, both fighters raise and circle each other, until their eyes meet and they engage in a takedown battle with the goal of lifting the opponent in the air before slamming them to the ground.

Both male and female fighters competin Huka-Huka, and many UFC champions have participated in it before Alex Pereira.

Anderson Silva and Demian Maia are two UFC legends who have previously participated in this folk style of wrestling, which has fighters that grapple body-painted to mimic jaguars as part of the ceremony.

As ceremonial s it is, it is obviously very effective, with the São Paulo State Military Police currently running a pilot program introducing the wrestling style to its training.

Alex Pereira, who was ridiculed by the community after getting a brown belt in BJJ a few days removed from his victory over Adesanya, who clearly out-grappled him in the octagon is far from the best grappler in the division. CHimaev himself is a purple belt but has a Dagestani wrestling background which we all know works in the UFC.

The Best Backpacks For BJJ in 2024

Best BJJ Backpack Review 2018

A key part of a grappler’s equipment is the bag they use to get to training. A good BJJ backpack can make a grappler’s life much easier. However, not all bags can play the role of BJJ backpack with much success. To that extent, some products are intended specifically for people’s Jiu-Jitsu needs. We bring you the best of the best in this review.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a sport that requires a lot of gear. When you first begin training you might be able to get away with a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. As you keep going, though, you’ll inevitably get your first Gi and there’s no turning back. The more you train Jiu-Jitsu, the more gear you have. Keep in mind that this is gear that you need to have with you every time you go training. First, you replace the shorts and T-shirt with a Gi. Then, you start exploring the world of rashguards for No-Gi training or wearing under the Gi. Once you start No-Gi, you’re going to need shorts too. By now, you already have a tweaked finger, a bad knee, or some other “small” injury that requires supportive gear. What you’re missing to be mobile and well-organized is a solid BJJ backpack.

On top of all the stuff, we already mentioned there are your gym essentials like water, towel, soap, shaker bottle… The list goes on and on and you’ll be surprised at how much stuff you need to store when you go training. To that extent, we’re going to cover the basic requirement a grappler has for a BJJ backpack. Once we all know what and why we’re looking for, we can move on to discover what’s on the market. There are great products out there that also need to fulfill certain design requirements, apart from grappling with specific needs. To spare you the blushes of being fooled by slick marketing, we’ll take apart the best BJJ backpacks out there and let you choose the best fit for your grappling needs.

It is completely ventilated meaning smells are not going to be an issue.

Check Other GRIPS Backpacks

While there are inner compartments, and the whole bag is waterproof, this might be an inconvenience to some. After all, pulling a bottle straight out of a pocket when you need it is much more comfortable.

What To Look For In A BJJ Backpack

So, what do you need from a good BJJ backpack? The answer is not as simple as you might think. It is not just about size or accessibility. It also needs to have good organization, to be durable, to be ergonomic, and reasonably priced. The requirements go on and on but let’s take it from the top.

The first thing a solid BJJ backpack should do is hold two Gis. Yeah, you read that right. Although you might go to training with only one Gi regularly, there are times when you’ll need to pack double. Imagine having to carry an additional Gi wrapped with a belt only because you have no space. Space for two Gis is mandatory for any legit BJJ.

Furthermore, you need space to store your No-Gi gear. Who knows, you might have a double class without heading home. Or the class might just change because a visiting black belt has no Gi with them. You need to be ready, so you need to have your rashguard, spats, and a pair of shorts always ready to go. Only the shorts are extra here since you should be wearing the rashguard and spats under your GI when you train.

Next, let’s cover hygiene. You need a towel, clean flip-flops, deodorant, soap, etc. On top of that, you need to store your supportive gear as well. Any bandages, finger tape, knee or elbow braces, headgear, and the like need to have their spot in the bag too. And we’re still not done. No good BJJ backpack lacks a proper spot to hold a water bottle. Not only that but most grapplers like to chug a shake of some kind after training. That means an extra spot for a shaker bottle.

The Anatomy Of A Good BJJ Backpack

What we covered so far, are the bare essentials you must be able to fit inside your potential BJJ backpack. Now, let’s talk about the organization. A good BJJ backpack needs to have optimal organization and separation of the gear.

For example, you’ll need separation between sweaty and clean garments. To that extent, that second GI space needs to be separate from the space for the used Gi and rashguards. Furthermore, if you carry around a pair of flip-flops for moving around the dressing area, you’ll need to keep them separate as well. Also, a separate belt pocket is always a great idea, although it is not mandatory.

Out of the two main compartments, one can double as a before and after training, and the other needs to stay clean. An extra place in the clean one for the towel and shower equipment is the mark of an excellent BJJ backpack. A hidden pocket of some kind is also usually included and plays a huge role when traveling for competition or for training on the road.

On the outside, pockets that hold liquid (water, shaker bottle, and the like) need to be large enough to hold the appropriate bottles. Furthermore, water-proof compartments intended for bottles are highly recommended. That’s already at least two essential outside compartments. Most of your supportive gear can and should fit in an outside compartment as well, taking the number to three. This is the least amount of outside compartments a good BJJ backpack should have.

Conclusion

Finally, the perfect bag should also fit perfectly. That means state-of-the-art ergonomics and design. You shouldn’t suffer under the weight of a couple of GIs and all that supportive gear. Plus, the backpack has to be stink-proof and made from a material that doesn’t absorb sweat and smells.

Best BJJ Supplements Of 2023 – Guide And Reviews

Best BJJ Supplements 2019

Looking back a few decades, not many athletes apart from bodybuilders were so aware of the supplement industry. To be honest, the supplement industry wasn’t that big back then as well. Yet, today people go and buy a few tubs of supplements before they even decide on what sport or workout program they’ll do. For people involved in combat sports, the reality is that supplements are a big factor. However, not everything the supplement company has to sell is a good fit for people training in Jiu-Jitsu. Actually, your basic BJJ stack is quite small, and even if you extend it you’ll need less than 10 to cover all your needs. In order to provide you with the information on the very best BJJ supplements that you should consider for your stack in 2023, we did an in-depth review of the market. Our conclusions are below.

The main issue with supplements is that grapplers and athletes in general, usually see them as meal replacements instead of supplements. The basic notion of supplements is to aid in training, recovery, or specific aspects of nutrition. they’re not there to take the place of a solid nutrition plan, nor are they able to. The thing with supplements is that you need to use them correctly, and smartly, and understand exactly what you need. Once you know what can actually help your performance on the mats, you need to know the best BJJ supplements. The options out there seem endless, but we have you covered with our ultimate guide for supplement shopping in 20231.

Grappling Supplements

First and foremost, what are exactly the needs for supplements that grapplers face? Well, first and foremost, it is performance. However, before addressing performance directly, you need to be sure your body is working optimally. That means having a healthy gut, a good immune system, and a good metabolism to begin with. Only then can you look into things that can give you energy and help you maintain a high level of performance. Finally, there’s the nutrition supplementation aspect, where you use supplements to get essential nutrients in a hurry.

For easier understanding, we have a few categories where we put all the best BJJ supplements for 2023. First up we have our performance-boosting essentials. These are the supplements that will help you train better, recover better, and turn your body into a grappling machine. next up, you have the health supplements, which are essential if you are to train at a high pace on a daily basis. Finally, we have optional supplements that can help your cognitive function as well as balance your metabolism.

Finally, what you won’t see on this list are fat burners and pre-workout supplements. the reason is simple – they’re a scam and have absolutely no positive benefit for grapplers. Fat burners are just a ploy to get money from overweight people looking to get into fitness. For BJJ, a solid nutrition plan is all you need to keep your fat and weight in check. As for pre-workout formulas to give you energy and drive, there’s nothing more hazardous to your health than the ingestion of such cocktails of powerful stimulants in unregulated doses.

1. Scivation Xtend BCAA Powder

Best BJJ Supplements 2019Protein is the building block of our bodies. In turn, the building blocks of protein are amino acids. There are a bunch of them, with some being essential to our normal functioning and others non-essential. Out of the essential amino acids, a few are incredibly important for people that train at a high level of exertion. Those are known as Branched Chain Amino Acids, or BCAAs.

Scivation has a powdered form of BCAAs, which are essentially leucine, isoleucine, and valine in a very specific ratio. This supplement should be the first thing you acquire when you’re building your BJJ supplements stack. Each dose has 7 grams of BCAAs that help support your muscles in grappling training. Best BJJ Supplements 2019My favorite supplement of them all – Is omega 3! You can tell I have jacked-up joints from that statement alone. However, in Jiu-Jitsu, there are rarely grapplers that have intact joints. Omega 3 are essential fatty acids that are found in fish oil. they have enormous health and performance benefits. In that sense, everyone needs to take them on a daily basis, regardless of activity levels.

Nordic Naturals’ product is the one Omega 3 product that passes with flying colors. the trick is in the delicate ratio of fatty acids that make up Omega 3. They come in a pack of 90 soft gel capsules that deliver an astonishing amount of fatty acids per serving. They’re also made with the latest technology making them completely absorbable by the gut. 7. Nature Made Calcium, Magnesium & Zinc

Best BJJ Supplements 2019When we talk about the best BJJ supplements, vitamins almost always get a mention. The equally important group of minerals, though, is something people easily overlook. In order to explain how important they actually are let me use an example. With a solid combination of calcium, magnesium, and zinc, you can boost testosterone in a natural fashion, so much so, that you won’t need TRT. Plus, it’s completely legal since it’s all-natural anyway.

Nature Made’s product contains key amounts of three essential minerals: calcium, zinc, and magnesium. On top of that, it also has Vitamin D, to help the absorption of calcium in particular. 9. Brain Plus Nootropic Supplement

Best BJJ Supplements 2019Nootropics are somewhat of a new category of supplements altogether. Well, at least in terms of commercial use. That makes identifying the best product quite a challenge. Despite our inherent lack of experience, we sought advice and managed to find a winner though.

Arzo Nutrition has a product named Brain Plus. The name says it all, really. This scientifically formulated supplement contains precisely balanced amounts of ingredients that number over 40! These include amino acids, vitamins, GABA, Grape Seed extract, antioxidants, and plenty more. The goal is to boost your cognitive functions so that you can perform more and better on the mats. Given how cerebral BJJ is a martial art, this is a really good supplement for grapplers. It improves focus, reduces stress, helps memory, and even boosts mood! Comes in a pack of 60 capsules.

BJJ Nutrition & Supplement System

On a final note, remember that supplements and nutrition actually work hand in hand. You can’t replace a great nutrition plan with supplements, nor vice versa. What you need is to use a great nutritional guide to figure out how to get the most out of your body. Then, you need to throw in a solid supplement stack to take your performance to the very next level.

If you’re looking for a nutrition plan that is going to teach you everything we’ve got just the thing for you. George Lockhart’s “Nutrition and Weight Management System” is designed specifically for combat athletes. What you get is a bundle of three DVDs and a 100+ page E-book. In it, you’ll learn four crucial aspects of combat nutrition. First, you’ll understand macros, portion sizes, and nutrition as a whole. next, you’ll figure out how to create a plan that’s specific to your individual needs. The key aspect of weight cutting is also there, with incredible tips on how to safely cut lots of weight. Finally, you get a guide for supplements and how to put everything together!

Keenan Cornelius: No-Gi Is So Simple You Have To Underthink

Keenan Cornelius: No-Gi is for people with less brainpower
According to BJJ world champion Keenan Cornelius, training No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is so much simpler than training with the Gi, that it actually makes you underthink and is therefore better for people with less brainpower.

Keenan Cornelius returned to No-Gi competition after several years at the latest edition of the IBJJF No-Gi Pans, which took place last October. The ADCC veteran, known for his infatuation with Gi Jiu-Jitsu and the use of lapels in various versions of his Worm guard, is actually really good at No-Gi, but did enjoy making a video for social media where he claims training without the gi requires very little thinking.

So, some of the things I’ve been working on lately… Obviously, I’ve been doing a lot of no-gi and trying to understand – conceptually – what the goals are.

The way that the game has evolved is really amazing and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. And I see that, even though no-gi is a simplified version of gi – for people with less brainpower – I appreciate the simplicity,” said Keenan Cornelius in a video on his Instagram account.

He went on to elaborate:

It’s so simple that you actually have to underthink… You have to think less in no-gi than you have to think in the gi – and that can be liberating. But also, all of the hyperanalysis that I’ve done in the gi is useless.

So, it’s like going from chess to checkers… Where, if you move the checker piece harder and faster – and with more steroids – you have a higher chance of winning.

At this point it becomes clear that Keenan Cornelius is actually mocking the idea that No-Gi is intellectually inferior to Gi, especially as he concludes:

… That is not a bad thing. It gives you an opportunity to improve your body. It really, like, brings your body into the game in a deeper, more visceral way.

Because you need to think, like: “I need the strength to be able to pull of this move.”

Good one Keenan!

Gordon Ryan Vs Vinny Magalhaes Rematch On December 15!

Gordon Ryan vs Vinny Magalhaes Rematch 2022
Gordon Ryan was already set to headline the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 event with his opponent just now revealed as the man that once beat Gordon – Vinny Magalhaes.

There is no denying that Gordon Ryan is the best grappler in the world, after his dominant performances over anyone that dared to slap and bump heads with him. It seems though, that after making history at the ADCC 2022, Ryan is now out to avenge all his early career losses, and the time has come for a redemption bout with Vinny Magalhaes.

When Gordon Ryan and Vinny Magalhaes last met in 2018 at the ACB JJ 13 event, Magalhaes was the one that walked away with the win, defeating Ryan on points in a three-round event.

The pair now meet in the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 event, which airs on the biggest combat sports streaming platform in the world. With Ryan already beating the only other person to defeat him, Felipe Pena once, and with another match between the two scheduled for February, avenging that one pesky 2018 loss to Vinny is obviously next on the “King’s” agenda.

Vinny though is one of the toughest grapplers in the world and will go the extra mile to prove a point. He got his leg broken twice in a match with Craig Jones before finally conceding that leg locks do work. Vinny Magalhaes is definitely going to be a stern test for Gordon.

The only concern is that under UFC Fight Pass Invitational rules, the match might end as a draw.

The UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 event is going to take place at the UFC Apex Center in Las Vegas on December 15.

Apart from the main event featuring Gordon Ryan vs. Vinny Magalhaes, the co-main event will see one of the best female grapplers in the world, Beatriz Mesquita face off against former Strikeforce and UFC champion Miesha Tate in the co-main event.

On top of the super figs, there will be an 8-man absolute tournament o the card as well, with the winner set to walk out with a $25.000 prize.
