Differences between JUDO and BJJ groundwork!

Differences between BJJ and Judo Groundwork

This article won’t be about what martial art is better for groundwork but what are the differences between those two. Primarily because Judo’s groundwork is a bit limited when we talk about sweeps, transitions, submissions… and especially playing from the back.

Why is that so? Because there is a time limit in Judo once you hit the ground. So in modern Judo, it would be a waste of time to train groundwork the way it’s taught in BJJ. You simply have no time to play on the ground and you can’t play from your back. If you hit the floor with your back you lost the match. So why bother with it? The only way you can play from your back is when your opponent pins you down to score a win. But then you’re not really “playing” from the back, you’re trying to get in a neutral position as fast as possible. And when you hit the ground in BJJ that’s where the fight actually starts.

Judo is incredibly complex throwing art on the feet just like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is incredibly complex art on the ground so talking about what’s better on the ground is a bit clueless.

The best explanation would be to say “it’s the same art with different rules”.

Let’s see what are the main differences between Judo and BJJ groundwork in the video below!

Top Five Biggest Lies in BJJ You Will Hear Almost Every Day in Your Gym!

Top Five Biggest lies in Jiu Jitsu you will hear almost every day!

Here are the top five biggest lies that you will hear while you’re training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Unfortunately, you’ll hear them almost every single time you come to training but you’ll get used to it. And probably you’ll recognize yourself in them if you’re honest enough.

1. Let’s roll light!

How many times have you heard let’s roll light and then they go super hard? Or they asked you to go light and after some time that escalates into a real war?

2. Excuses when tapped out.

You tap him with a foot lock and you hear oh wait my ankle is so sore from one week ago and then they start turning their feet in all directions and saying some non-sense while looking down as they can’t watch you in the eyes as they know they’re lying?

Or you tap them on anything and they say they were testing their defense? They had such a long and hard day? Or they wanted to see if you know how to finish that submission? Or do they just give something for fun?

3. I don’t have an ego!

Yes, you do! We all have an ego! Someone smaller, someone bigger but it’s there. And even if you left your ego at the door you will definitely take it home once you’re finished with the class.

4. Strength doesn’t matter!

Sure it does. How many times you were bench pressed from the side mount? How many times you were in the air when trying to apply a triangle or armbar? How many times you couldn’t stop your opponents from turning into the Turtle? Well, most of the time you’ll hear it from your coach as he doesn’t want you to leave BJJ and go to weight lifting.

5. Annoying Comments and questions after sparring

There are so much annoying comments after sparring especially if you “destroy” someone. But always be cool and act like you’re willing to listen to them. Say it’s true, and put on a big smile.

For example, a question like What’s your weight? They know your weight but they just want to feel good. Or, how tight was my choke on you? If it was a good choke you would tap so… Or, “I had you there but…” No, you didn’t so stop pointing at something that didn’t exist.

Choked Out Fighter Woke Up and KOd his Opponent

knocked out fighter woke up and knocked out his opponent

Weird situation happened on ACB64 MMA event. Nashko Gaev was choked out in round 1 by his opponent Denis Mutsnek. Before he dropped his hands he even did a tap.

Referee was very close to action and he went to check if Nashko was conscious and he suddenly appeared moving his hands and starting to defend. The fight was not stopped and in second round Nashko Gaev Knocked out his opponent with a knee blow to the head.

The main question is, should the referee stop the fight there?

Jason Momoa, “Khal Drogo” from Game Of Thrones Trains BJJ?

Jason Momoa aka khal Drogo trains BJJ

With such an impressive physique Jason Momoa was perfect Khal Drogo in Game Of Thrones and I believe we were all sad when he left the series leaving his lovely wife Emilia Clark aka Daenerys Targaryen alone.

Maybe we were also sad because of some scenes that they had together but we will leave that for another subject 🙂

All of us who miss Jason Momoa’s character from Game Of Thrnoes can be happy because he will soon be seen in another movie called “Aquaman”.

Here is the picture of Jason with arms wide spread wearing a white belt together with all other novices.

This picture was taken in one of Rigan Machado’s academies. Have a nice BJJ trip Jason!

Mauricio Motta Gomes Father of Roger Gracie

Mauricio Motta Gomes was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As many other BJJ Legends he started training while bery young at the age of four. He started training at João Alberto Barreto’s training academy. His father was also a BJJ practitioner who had great impact on his knowledge.

After some time Mauricio stopped training at João Alberto Barreto’s academy, for unknown reasons, and switched to the Rolls Gracie academy. He was workiung with Rolls for 5 years and in 1981 he was awarded with a black belt. With his black belt he became one of the “The Famous Five”,  a nickname to Rolls Gracie’s black belt students, even though there were six of them.

As he was spending years near Gracie Family he felt in love with Carlos Gracie’s daughter, Reila Gracie. They married in 1979 and two years after future multiple world champion Roger Gracie was Born. Unfortunately their marriage did not last.

After His mentor passed away Mauricio moved to Japan but came back to Brazil because of language barrier. He continued training with Rolls Gracie’s brother, Carlinhos Gracie and was waiting for new teaching opportunity to came. This time he went to United Kingdom.  He started an academy called Gracie Barra UK in Birmingham, England. He also brought Felipe Souza, Braulio Estima, and his son Roger Gracie. As this buisness went very well Mauricio set up other academies in London, Edinburgh, and Belfast.

Right now Mauricio is teaching in Brazil and at his son’s Roger Gracie academy in London, UK.

Dean Lister: I will Not Give Brown Belt to a d*ckhead

Dean Lister is a legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and mixed martial artist. Dean’s accomplishments in martial arts are incredible and include becoming a 3x ADCC champion, king of the Cage middleweight champion, and 4x National Machado Jiu-Jitsu champion. Dean has also fought professionally in the UFC and Pride and is considered a pioneer and innovator in the world of lower body submissions. It was awesome to have Dean on the show and a huge honor for me. Dean is a very humble guy with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Recently Dean Lister did an Interview on Mat Tricks podcast.

As we can see Lister has his own view on belt requirements in Brazilian JJiu-Jitsuand we can say that we couldn’t agree more.

“I will not give a brown belt to anyone who is a d*ckhead, for instance, they have to have some humility. This is when it gets really important, brown belt, black belt. “

Check out the podcast as it contains a lot of interesting material about Dean Listers Jiu-Jitsu, his real life and some very interesting happenings and facts.
