Learning wrestling for BJJ is actually a lot easier than you imagine. There is no need to drill endlessly how to shoot across the mats and do crazy neck bridges. Instead, all you need is to understand how to dominate the grip fight, and in particular, counter grip fighting.

Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD is an international that will help you make sense of the underhook position, but not in the way that you think. This DVD will teach you how to beat anyone that gets an underhook on you, rather than showing you how to use it to attack.

Priorities in Standing Exchanges

What is your first goal when you are trying to take a match to the mats? It doesn’t matter if you are going to do takedowns, or pull guard – you’ll need to first engage with the opponent. This engagement comes via grips, and is, hands down (pun intended), the hardest thing to master in grappling.

Grip fighting is a subject that is hard to make sense of since there is no real way to map out all the possible grip combinations between you and your opponent. What we know, though, are the most effective positions that allow for takedowns or guard pulls. If your grips do not lead towards any of them, you’re better off not grabbing just for the sake of it.

One more thing to consider is the depth of the grips. You can’t get in too much trouble with a misplaced wrist, or even elbow grip, but once you go for an underhook or an overhook, you need to be very wary of how those can be used against you. The Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD offers a great perspective on this.

Coaching Prodigy Dima Murovanni

The BJJ world always had prodigies in competition circles, bringing excitement and driving interest as a direct result of their performances. however, something that is fairly new in the sport is having prodigy coaches, people who can break down and teach the art even before reaching their black belt.

In all honesty, belts went out the window a few years ago, but still, most people involved in the sport seek out reputable coaches based on their experience, competition record, and or other outstanding attributes. In the last few years, people such as Dima Murovanni, who is still a brown belt in BJJ have ended up being first-choice coaches for seasoned black belt athletes who like to win and keep winning.

Dima, a product of the German BJJ Akademie,  is a man who does not come with a huge wrestling pedigree of Olympic Judo medals. He simply got drawn into BJJ, had unfortunate injuries, and opted for a professional coaching role as opposed to a pro-competitor one. Several years and a few huge names such as Jozef Chen, Margot Ciccarelli, Owen Jones, Brianna Ste-Marie, and Linus von Schrenk, and everyone wants to train with DIma.

The now full-time B-team coach has been particularly active with instructional lately, his latest one being Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD, covering a very curious subject.

Detailed Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD Review

Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD is a four-part No-Gi instructional showing how you can counter underhooks with throws, takedowns, trips, and back takes. Each part of the instructional lasts around 30 minutes, bringing the total running time to just over 2 hours.

Part 1 – Grappling Underhooks 101

This new Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD is another one in his series, this time targeting the underhook in standing exchanges. The very first volume covers some underhook basics, mostly in regard to positioning, arm depth, and upper body angles.

Dima uses examples from wrestling to present why the underhook is dangerous, and the reasons why wrestlers rely on it so much. He also pinpoints the position’s weaknesses as well, mostly through the use of a reactive overhook.

Grip fighting, distance management, head positioning, level changes, and weight distribution all feature in this opening salvo of concepts, building the foundation of using overhooks to counter all underhook attacks you’ll encounter on the feet.

Part 2 – Uchi Mata

As we move on to the second part of the Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD, the focus shifts more towards attacking the person that has an underhook on you, using their grip to destabilize and throw them. The method of choice to present this concept for Dima is the Uchi Mata throw.

Murovanni begins by showing several different grips using your free arm that help you set up the Uchi Mata motion, including mercy grips and the versatile Saitiev grip. He also offers several follow-ups including how to land perpendicular and pin the opponent who initially underhooked you using the Uchi Mata.

Part 3 – Underhook Killing Combos

The third portion of the Kill Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD is where Dima introduces versatility in his underhook counters. Mostly based on Judo, the moves that Murovanni shows here offer different ways to throw someone trying to take you down using an underhook.

Options include Ashi Guruma, O guruma, and he every present Sasae, depending on what your opponent is trying to do. Dima masterfully mixes in some wrestling essentials as well, such as front headlocks and throw bys.

What I enjoyed the most about this portion of the DVD is weight distribution, with Dima making the most out of people who use lazy underhooks by trapping their arm with pressure.

Part 4 -Trips and Bodylocks

As we near the end of the Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD, body locks start to appear as a natural follow-up. Namely, Dima starts using body locks in combination with all his attacks from the previous volumes, capitalizing on the opponent’s now desperate attempts to make something of the underhook.

He also introduces trips in this part, as weighing down on the opponent’s underhook greatly affects their balance, creating sweeping opportunities. Most of the attacks are Greco-Roman wrestling basics, but they do lack modern BJJ classes and provide effective ways to kill the underhook.

Why Counter Wrestling is Better

Standing exchanges are all about the grips which should be painfully clear by now. The issue is that most times when we wrestle, the grips that we want don’t materialize. Whenever this happens, I see people fail around and attempt senseless maneuvers in an attempt to still finish the takedown they had in mind.

If you see Greco-Roman wrestlers, you’ll notice that their grip fighting is sort of slow and methodical, not unlike BJJ exchanges. The reason for this is that if you get a grip, even a good one, it may be used against you by a skilled opponent. That is exactly the skill you want to develop, and using the Kill The Underhook Dima Murovanni DVD is your best way shy of signing up for Greco-Roman classes.

Figuring out how to use the opponent’s grips against him is a great way of making sure your wrestling works. If you manage to get your own offensive grips, you can play your game, but even if they get a good grip, using counter wrestling you can easily turn the tables, ending up winning again. Easy, right?
