The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is a very interesting instructional. It features a grappler who has grown into Jiu-Jitsu from the moment she was born but without all the constraints of the Gracie period. The result is a closed guard system that her dad, Vgner Rocha should be very proud of.

Jasmine Rocha demonstrates how to use a position that many take for granted and apply it to modern BJJ with next to no effort. Her delivery is precise and detailed, but we expect nothing else from the black belt who has been fighting at a professional level even as a juvenile. Let’s see what this DVD is all about.

Remember Closed Guard?

When was the last time you played closed guard? Let me rephrase that in a way that will make more sense. When was the last time you intentionally played closed guard? Yeah, that’s right unless you’re a 40+ brown belt (and. or above), you’re probably not paying too much attention to the closed guard.

I know because I was the same… until I became that brown belt (albeit well before 40). The closed guard is the one position in BJJ that has always been around, works with a high level of reliability, and happens during almost every match you’ll ever have. For some reason, people under extreme pressure revert to the closed guard, even if they haven’t played it for years.

Knowing all of this, isn’t it smarter to have a system that works from the closed guard? Since you’re going to eventually end up there anyway, it’s much better to be ready and calm as you enjoy all the options the position offers.

You’re going to need an equally effective skillset for dealing with it as well, but that is a subject for another day. Today, we’ll take a look at how a new-school instructional which is the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD can help you improve the most old-school position in our sport.

Jasmine Rocha – Jiu-Jitsu is a Family Thing

The Rocha family, headed by Vagner is a demonstration of BJJ being a family thing, focusing on competitive performances over anything else. We all know who Vagner Rocha is and what he has accomplished – he is a staple name in the sport.

It seems that his knack for grappling has transferred to the next generation. Both his children, Jasmine Rocha and Achille Rocha are following in their father’s footsteps, with the advantage of starting so early that they’re already getting deserved recognition in the BJJ world even though they’re still very young.

Jasmine is 22 years old and already has a few huge silver medals in No-GI World, No-Gi Pans, ADCC West Coast Trials, and a third-place finish in the 2024 ADCC. That is highly impressive considering that she’s only been a black belt for a couple of years.

A glimpse into how the pro grappler thinks and organizes her game is available through her first DVD instructional “the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD”.

Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD Review

The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is  NO-Gi instructional that consists of three parts, each focusing on a different aspect of guard attacks, and all of them tied into a neat system. The length of the material is roughly two hours.

Part 1 – The Shoulder Crunch System

The opening part of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD blends an upper body control we usually see in open guards, which is the shoulder crunch, with the lower body mechanics of the closed guard. This results in a very tricky combo that is difficult to beat and offers many options.

Some of the things we’ve seen Jasmine set up in pro matches, such as the Choi Bar entry and her signature armbar feature here, with lots of details on how to make them work. She also outlines how to throw in a head and arm choke in the mix, paving the way for the submission-based sweeps portion of this volume.

Triangles and armbars wrap this opening act up, with the very last chapter showing Jasmine’s creativity in the ‘slot machine” submission. It’s a combo you already know, polished up a bit, and given the best name for the position, in my opinion.

Part 2 – Bump Sweeps

The second portion of the DVD focuses on sweeps, but it takes a more methodical approach. Ropcha first uncovers how to beat the number one problem people have when sweeping from any guard – posture.

The first few chapters in the second portion of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD share some super important posture-breaking concepts, with the armbar used as an example to provide context. From there, on Rocha gets back to the e fast-paced demonstration of aggressive finishing moves.

The Bump sweep is her weapon of choice, and I was very impressed. In ever expected the sweep to be as effective as Rocha has made it. She uses it to get on top, take the back, set up triangles, open up Kimuras, and just about anything else you can imagine from there. The best and probably only hip bump sweep system out there.

Part 3 – K-Guard Options

The final portion of the Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD addresses the K-guard, which is a logical combo guard attached to any closed guard game these days. It is the butterfly guard of Gen Z, and as such, offers access to the missing link in closed guard – leg locks.

First up is the 50/50, more precisely, the backside distal finishing version popularized by Lachlan Giles. Rocha seems to have picked up useful bits from everyone, with the Donkey Guard featuring in a K-guard & 50/50 combo that is the closest we’ll lever get to a love child from Jeff Glover and Lachlan.

Still working from the K-Guard, Jasmine introduces more submissions to her system, in the form of triangles, arm bars, and Choi Bars to bring things full circle. She uses the same submission from the K-guard and the closed guard, ending up with a system that is easy to remember, more than versatile enough, and effective to the extreme.

The Guard That Always Works

As you can see, the closed guard remains the only guard you can rely on every time, in every situation, Gi or No-Gi. The fundamental mechanics of the position will always yield results, even if sprinkle some modern moves and principles onto it.

The Full Basic Closed Guard Jasmine Rocha DVD is the perfect example. Rocha uses al the staples that her father, the Popovitch brothers, and the entire Gracie family have used to win world titles before. She just adds some bits and pieces that she has borrowed from other top grapplers to turn it into a system that works perfectly for her.

And that is exactly what everyone needs to do. All cars operate on the same principle, but no two brands offer the same model. It is the same with the closed guard- it works because of the mechanical advantage it offers. Feel free to build on it as much as you want, as long as you don’t abandon those underlying principles.
