Open Guard Teaching Method by Eric Laporte

open Guard Flow Chart

As a long-time martial artist, I have always been fascinated by how each academy’s curriculum and coaching methods differ from each other. I have been teaching Martial Arts for several years, and am known for thinking outside the box, putting emphasis on concepts rather than actual techniques.

As a seasoned teacher in many spheres of my life, I have always felt very fortunate to be able to share my knowledge and passion with others. From these experiences, I realized that everyone learns at their own pace and that we all have different needs and seek maximum improvement.

When I teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I use a structure I call “The Flow Chart System”. I released an instructional video on BJJfanatics.com based on that system. As they study it, people will get an initial glimpse at how the method works. I also added simplified Flow Charts to help them understand how the techniques are linked together. Given the complexity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, flow charts have proven to be an effective tool for optimizing skills integration for students at all levels.

OPen guard Flow Chart System

There are many benefits in using this structure, one being that it is very easy to understand. It is like looking at a map. You start with a technique or position, and then you go on from there. While learning BJJ, I always felt that we retain more information by associating techniques together, learning them as a sequence. For example, learning counters and sweeps as a reaction to your opponent’s actions, rather than learning everything independently. Too often, people learn a position but have no idea how or when to even get there. The Chart simplifies and answers many questions the student may have. Very often, my students look at the charts and remember what they learned in a class that took place weeks earlier.

Another benefit is that it is a great planning tool while preparing for a class or a seminar. The last seminar I gave was 3 hours of Open Guard. Using techniques taken from my Flow Charts, and regardless of their level, everyone really enjoyed it. Many were guests from other gyms and were surprised at how easy it was for them to understand and memorize the content. Some often send me videos to show me how much they improved. It’s also impressive to see how much they remembered.

A great way to improve fluidity and precision comes with drilling the sequences. In time, everything will fall into place. The transitions will become automatic while rolling or competing.

If you look at Karate, katas are often found in belt passage tests, putting emphasis on technique and movement reproduction. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I always enjoyed how liberal it was. Different body types, different levels of athleticism, and yet, everyone can find techniques they enjoy and that suit them. I am a firm believer that if an athlete understands the concept of a position or technique, he will not only learn it faster, but he will also be able to adapt it to his needs rather than simply copying a move.

Give this a try. I am convinced it will help most athletes in the growth and development of their martial art! Come and visit my blog at themartialartslife.net.

Transgender MMA Fighter Alana McLaughlin Wins Her Debut

Alana McLaughlin MMA Trans Athlete

Alana McLaughlin, a transgender MMA fighter won her debut on Friday night against Celine Provost.

Alana McLaughlin is the second transgender woman to fight in an MMA in the United States.

30-years-old Alana managed to choke Celine Provost with RNC (Rear Naked Choke) after 3 minutes and 32 seconds in the second round.

It was a pretty interesting fight at the start as Celine Provost did a very good job landing multiple shots before she was taken down by Alana.

As McLaughlin was declared the victor, she wore a t-shirt with the inscription “End Trans Genocide.”

McLaughlin is a former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier who began her gender transition in 2010 when she decided to leave the U.S. army.

As Alana said her reasons for leaving the army were her fighting dreams and the hope to be a transgender athlete pioneer in the United States and MMA in general.

“I want to pick up the mantle that Fallon put down,” – said Alana before the fight while referring to Fallon Fox who was the first trans athlete who began her MMA career in 2012.

“Right now, I’m following in Fallon’s footsteps. I’m just another step along the way and it’s my great hope that there are more to follow behind me.” – Alana added.

Fox retired from MMA in 2014 after many controversies and global non-acceptance of her in MMA. Her fight against Tamikka Brent where Fallon broke her skull was obviously too much for Fox to handle.

The second trans athlete in the United States was Patricio Manuel. He fought in a boxing match in 2018 and won via unanimous decision against Hugo Aguilar.

According to ESPN, McLaughlin was allowed to fight after being tested for testosterone hormones level by the Florida State Boxing Commission.

After the fight and her win, Alana said she has nothing but respect for her opponent:

“I have nothing but respect for Celine Provost,” – said Alana McLaughlin while stating that it was a nightmare for her to find an opponent.

“If we want to see more trans athletes, if we want to see more opportunities for trans kids, we’re going to have to work out way into those spaces and make it happen,” McLaughlin told Outsports. “It’s time for trans folks to be in sports and be more normalized.”

(VIDEO) Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley Staredown, the Teams Almost Got Into a Fight

Tyron Woodley Jake Paul staredown

We are getting closer to the night from Sunday to Monday and the boxing match between former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Youtube star Jake Paul. Tensions appear to have risen wickedly after today’s press conference attended by both fighters and their teams.

Namely, during the confrontation between the two fighters, one of the members of Jake’s team made several comments and threw them at Tyron Woodley’s mother. Deborah Woodley soon reacted and verbally clashed with a member of Jake’s team, and then the situation began to escalate. There was a great deal of discussion between almost all the members of both teams, and Tyron Woodley was particularly furious.

“I’ve never seen Woodley so tense,” – Ariel Helwani wrote, posting the video on his Twitter profile.

Security, however, responded on time and Jake Paul’s entire team was escorted out of the hall where the press conference was held. Tyron Woodley tried to reach Jake Paul and his team, but the security did a good job there as well.

Jake Paul spoke shortly after the incident and sprinkled himself with ashes, saying, “We were all wrong, and all this makes us stupid.”

“T-Wood” was criticized by many for being extremely passive in the last few UFC appearances and acting as if he had totally lost his zeal and motivation to fight. Jake Paul and his team seem to have pretty much provoked the former UFC champion and the hope remains that we will finally see Woodley eager to fight and win.

All in all, the situation was a bit reminiscent of the 2017 UFC press conference and the conflict between Kevin Lee and Michaela Chiese. Then Lee mentioned Chiesa’s mother, and the situation escalated and the fighters briefly and physically clashed.

You can watch the complete recording of Woodley’s and Paul’s press conference as well as the confrontation itself in the video below:

Here is a clip concerning the conflict between the two teams.

Jacare Souza Retires: ‘I hope you will remember me as someone who never gave up’

Jacare Souza Retired

41-year-old Brazilian MMA fighter Ronaldo Jacare Souza (26-10-0, 1 NC) decided to retire after four defeats in a row and the expiration of his contract with the UFC. Probably the most difficult defeat was the last one in May against Andrea Muniz. Souza was defeated by submission for the first time in his MMA career and suffered a severe arm fracture. Still, the Brazilian claims the broken arm had nothing to do with his decision to retire from MMA.

”I fought for many years, but I was no longer motivated and that’s why I decided it was enough. At the moment I don’t think about returning to the fights and I believe that I won’t think about it in the future either. I definitely retired. I hope fans will remember me as someone who never gave up. In victories or defeats, I always kept fighting. I would like to be remembered as someone who really took part in the battles, ” Jacare explained the reason for his retirement for MMA Fighting.

Ronaldo Souza in the period from 2013 to 2017 had as many as seven victories in eight UFC appearances, and the only defeat was inflicted on him by Yoel Romero by a divided and somewhat controversial refereeing decision. Still, the Brazilian BJJ master has never fought for the UFC championship belt. In April 2017, just two months after winning against Tim Boetsch, Jacare was knocked out in the first round by later champion Robert Whittaker. There are many who felt that Souza should not even have accepted that fight, but should have waited for the opportunity to attack the title. The Brazilian looked back at the whole situation.

”I don’t want to think too much about things that have happened in the past, I’m always looking to the future. I think people who talk too much about history are actually afraid of their future. But I believe I made a mistake, as did the people who were with me. I could step aside and say I would wait for the opportunity to go for the UFC belt. That didn’t happen, but it’s not worth crying. Mistakes have been made and that’s just the way it is. ”, Added Jacare, who earlier in his career, in 2010 to be precise, won the Strikeforce middleweight belt and managed to defend it once.

One of the greatest BJJ stars in MMA has already announced that he will dedicate himself to BJJ and plans to do some performances in the sport where it all started for him. It’s a shame the Brazilian never got a chance to attack the UFC belt, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s still one of the greatest MMA fighters.

Overeem Shocks Americans With a Statement About Professional Wrestling: “it’s lame, stupid, makes no sense…”

Alistair Overeem on Pro Wrestling

Recently, the UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem expressed his personal opinion on the popular American martial arts show.

The first UFC opponent of Alistair Overeem, when he came to UFC for promotion on a penultimate day in 2011, the first UFC opponent of Alistair Overeem was Brock Lesnar. He was one of the biggest stars of professional wrestling, better known in our country as “catchers”. Overeem then convincingly defeated the former UFC champion and started that phase of his career in a great way. He created a stellar status, despite which he still failed to become the champion of the world’s largest MMA promotion.

Lesnar returned to the WWE ring last week after just over a year, while Overeem revealed that he is returning to another ring on October 23rd. Immediately after signing a contract with Glory, Overeem will attack the heavyweight title held by Rico Verhoeven. On that occasion, he was a guest at Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, who recalled his fight against Lesnar. Helwani asked Reem if he had attended this great event for all “professional wrestling” fans, to which Helwani himself belongs.

“I’ll explain how things are with me. I watched it when I was eight or ten. Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, I was a big fan of those guys. Great and fun, as was Andre The Giant. I stopped watching after that, so I don’t watch from somewhere in 1992, 1993, maybe 1994. And lately, I’ve started watching a little bit on YouTube.Oh my God, that looks pathetic. It’s pathetic what the guys are doing. It’s fake, it’s pathetic, it’s stupid, it’s gay. It makes absolutely no sense, “the Dutchman said, as Helwani expressed disbelief, trying to stop him.

Of course, the American media immediately attacked Overeem because of the word “gay”, that is, how they called it a homophobic outburst. Although there is no doubt that the fans did not have the best “sit” or everything else he said about one of the most popular American types of entertainment.

Realistically, some people find it pointless that something like this is actually called professional wrestling, and they think that the very name belittles real wrestlers. Many will agree, but the Americans called their product that way, at a time when inspired by Mexican “luchadors”, they tried to sell it to the public and more than succeeded. WWE is today one of the most financially secure companies in the United States, and the number of fans is not decreasing, even though it has long been revealed that these are pre-designed and scenario-determined fights.

“It’s pathetic and it’s not a sport at all. It’s bad acting, poor bad acting. I apologize to all the fans, but I’m honest and I give my opinion. Free state, isn’t it? It’s pathetic and that’s why I haven’t watched it for 20 years. Never I didn’t watch Brock where he performed, I never watched CM Punk. When they came to the UFC, I knew they were from the WWE, but I never watched them, “Reem continued, turning to CM Punk, who returned to Pro Wrestling a few weeks ago after a failed UFC adventure:

“Why didn’t anyone warn CM Punk what he was getting into? Of course, he can’t fight in the UFC. You should have been more honest, told him where he was coming from. That guy was mentally devastated in the Octagon. And anyone who watched his WWE performances “I didn’t, but anyone who did could very easily have guessed what would happen to him. It was clear that his UFC experience was going to be very nasty. He could have been seriously injured.”

The Americans will certainly blame Overeem for this, even without what they immediately called a homophobic outburst. Luckily for him, he decided to continue his career at Glory, a promotion that apparently gave up its mission of conquering the American market and dedicated himself to the European one where kickboxing has always had its audience.

German Judo Coach Fired Up his Black Belt Olympian Student by Shaking and Slapping Her, Twice

German Judo Coach Fired Up his Black Belt Olympian Student by Shaking and Slapping Her, Twice

Judo coach tried to fire and psyche up his student before her Judo match by shaking and slapping her.

He caught her for her GI lapel while shaking and slapping her around the face.

It’s probably something unusual to see especially in the case of the competitor is a female. But the 32-year-old, German olympian Martyna Trajdos said it’s nothing but a normal pre-competition ritual they’re used to do.

Martyna Trajdos even made a joke out of the whole situation by saying that her coach didn’t slap her hard enough as she didn’t manage to get the win against her opponent after that. She lost a match in her 63 kg division against Hungarian Sofi Ozbas.

After the loss, she posted a message on her Instagram Profile to alleviate the anger of people on social media.

“Look’s like this was not hard enough ☺️🙊🙈!
I wish I could have made a different headline today 😢.
As I already said that’s the ritual which I chose pre-competition!
My coach is just doing what I want him to do to fire me up!” – wrote Martyna

What exactly happened is that Martyna, just before the match start, walked to her coach, Claudiu Pusa. He then grabbed her by her Gi and started to shake her violently, and slapping her around the face a few moments after.

Coincidence? Or did Master Ken single-handedly destroy DDS the world’s most feared BJJ fighters? You decide.

Gordon Ryan is Opening a NEW Academy, Craig Jones and Other DDS Members Reveals Their Plans. Danaher Commented Craig’s Post

Gordon Ryan is Opening a NEW Academy and Shares More Details

A day ago John Danaher announced DDS break up but a lot of details were missing and now they’re coming up. As many people suspected Gordon Ryan is moving to Austin, Texas, and is opening a new academy.

He shares this information on his Instagram profile:

“The rumors are true- I’m moving to AUSTIN TEXAS and opening an academy with those who are deciding to stay with me. There is uncertainty about who will go where as of now, but I am sure that I have an undeniable connection with my Texas fans and there is nothing in this world I love more than teaching those who support and love me. Texas jiu-jitsu was already on the map, but I and my team will make it the jiu-jitsu capital of the world. Moving in the next couple of months, who is joining, and what part of Austin should we open and why?” – wrote Gordon Ryan

Why Gordon Ryan chose Texas is probably because Texas is a pretty “hot” destination for Jiu-Jitsu right now. Flograppling is located in Texas, WNO Events are there, and ex-DDS team members are involved in it.

And who’s going with Gordon Ryan is still left to see but some of the most known members of DDS revealed their plans.

Oliver Tazza announced that he’ll make a move together with Gordon Ryan. Craig Jones announced that the B-Team will stick together. He posted the pics of himself, Nicky Rod, Ethan Crelinsten, and Gordon’s brother Nicky Ryan.

“Happy to announce the B Team is going to stick together and keep training. The goal remains the same.” – Wrote Craig Jones on his Instagram profile

In the other post, Craig Jones posted a picture of John Danaher and himself and wrote a message to Danaher.

“Big thanks to the best coach in combat sports. I was lucky enough to be included in the DDS when they were a well-established team. They welcomed me in and helped me reach new heights in the sport. They changed the sport of grappling forever and brought more eyes and money to it than anyone before them. Can’t wait to see where everyone goes from here. I know they will all keep killing it. Lastly, I’m not Yoko Ono, maybe Jimmie Nichol. @danaherjohn– wrote Craig Jones

John Danaher commented on Craig Jones’ post:

Thank you, Craig! It was a privilege to be alongside you all and a pleasure to witness your success. No matter where you all go my heart and soul will always be in your corner. You are a brilliant and innovative student and I know you will keep improving where ever life takes you 🤗

Gordon Ryan on DDS Break Up: 'This Team Has Changed Jiu-Jitsu Forever. On to a New Start'

Gordon Ryan shares his thoughts on a DDS break up:

“As many of you have heard, the DDS is now retired.”

“First and foremost, I want to issue an apology to our fans. I know I promised you all information on the school and affiliate program, but before we could make our announcements the team decided to split, which obviously changed plans. I will have an update, at some point, eventually, on those concerns😂.”

“More than anything, I am happy that I got to share the mats all these years with such intuitive and interesting grapplers. I enjoyed helping them pursue their goals and am grateful they helped me pursue mine. I’m sure that no matter what happens, and no matter where we all end up, this team has changed jiu-jitsu forever, and that’s something no one can deny.”

“On to a new start, and always looking to be the best me I can be.” – Wrote Gordon Ryan on his Instagram Profile
