Dillon Danis Shares his side of the story: 'The guy pretended to be a cop, so I didn't fight back'

Late last month we had a chance to read about Dillon Danis and his clash with bouncers at a nightclub. Bellator’s fighter was eventually arrested, and a video was circulating on the Internet in which the BJJ master tapped on the choking off one of the bouncers in that bar.

The 28-year-old fighter was a guest on the latest edition of the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani and was given the opportunity to tell his side of the story. Danis claims he was just trying to have fun at his friend’s wedding.

”I thought the post-wedding party would last all night, but it ended at 10 pm. We went to town and planned to go to Manhattan. However, one of the friends asked us to stop at a bar that was on the way because there were a lot of his family members there. We agreed to it, but that place was the most sh**** place you’ve ever seen. There were literally three people inside. “

By the way, Dillon Danis underwent a complete knee reconstruction in March, and the operation lasted seven hours. Bellator’s fighter is still in the recovery phase and is using crutches.

”I was on crutches until that day. However, because of weddings and photos, I am allowed not to use crutches, but only if I am standing, not if I am walking.” Danis explained.

The American fighter then explained that he had certain problems at the entrance. The person reviewing the documents asked him to show the identification document, but Danis did not have his wallet. The bouncer who eventually forced Danis to tap into his version of the story said Danis was trying to prove who he was via Google.

”You know when you walk in a suit tailored for you, and you have a wallet in your pocket. It doesn’t look good in the pictures. It’s funny that this guy says I ‘googled’ myself to prove to him who I am. I showed him proof of my age and passport, as well as a vaccination card. I told him I didn’t have a wallet because we took pictures all day.” the MMA fighter replied to the bouncer’s claims.

So the problem was already at the entrance to the bar, but Dillon claims that it all started with an argument between two guys in front of the said bar.

“It simply came to our notice then. I am not allowed to move (without crutches) and therefore I stood to the side. I would go home, but in places like that, you can’t call Uber because it takes them an hour to get there. So I stopped there because I wasn’t allowed to walk, and that’s when these guys got into a conflict. A lot of waiters then came out and I swear you were surrounded by about nine people. They were very selfish and tried to fight with me. I told them not to touch me and there would be no problem. One of the guys was constantly tapping my head and wondering what would happen if he touched me after all. I begged him to stop and I explained how I had come to have fun. He still kept tapping on my forehead and then a fight ensued” said Bellator’s fighter.

Danis explained how someone jumped on his back and told him he had been arrested. The BJJ master thought he was indeed a police officer and did not want to use physical force against the police officer. Still, it turned out that the person on his back was a bouncer, not a cop.

“He is in trouble because he pretended to be a police officer and all that will go to court. We’ll take care of it. He is not even the guy who touched me, he was not even involved in that conflict” Dillon explained.

Danis adds that he was quickly released from custody into which he was taken by real police officers.

”All the cops were on my side, to be honest with you. I was in the cell for 20 minutes and then the policeman took us to another party” Dillon Danis concluded his side of the story.

Older People Can Still Do BJJ, but How?

Old man BJJ Game Blueprint

“Age is just a number. It is never too late to do BJJ.”

Over several years of training and coaching, I have seen a lot of people give this advice to older BJJ practitioners. In fact, that advice is always the first thing that comes out of my mouth when someone asks me  “Am I too old to start BJJ?,” or “Am I too old to continue doing BJJ?.” Despite this being a common question among older practitioners, I have not seen enough programs specifically targeted toward older BJJ practitioners.

We give them motivation, but we don’t tell them how to train safely and effectively at an older age. We might like to think that age isn’t a factor, but over my years of teaching and training, the reality is that as you age – especially once you reach around 30 to 40 – you begin to see a decrease in the performance of your joints, cardio, strength, speed, and muscle.

According to an article published in Harvard Health, “Age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia, is a natural part of aging. After age 30, you begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% per decade. Most men will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their lifetimes.”

This means that continuing BJJ as an older practitioner becomes progressively harder. I have personally seen many older practitioners struggle with the following points:

  • Staying effective against younger, faster, and more athletic practitioners.
  • Executing modern techniques that require flexibility and speed.
  • Getting adequate recovery.
  • Suffering injuries while training without proper instructions geared towards older BJJ practitioners.

While I sincerely believe that anyone at any age can safely practice BJJ and enjoy it, the biggest question is “How?”. I believe that more programs that specifically emphasize techniques and mindsets for older BJJ practitioners are needed in the community. This is why I left my full-time job to start helping practitioners 40 and older. I thought that I could be of service to the community since I have a lot of experience teaching older practitioners.

In this article, I have picked three pieces of advice that I give to older practitioners on a regular basis.

1. You do not have to be faster than younger people, just be earlier

The most common question that I get asked by older BJJ practitioners is “What should I do when I roll with someone who is younger and faster?”.  As you know, explosiveness significantly decreases as you age. BJJ is a combat sport in which you want to get better grip and move your body to an advantageous position before your opponent does so in order to win. Therefore, speed definitely does matter, and it really is hard to be faster than younger practitioners.

The strategy that you can take is to move “earlier” than your opponent instead of “faster”. In order for you to do this, you have to study and master templates for common jiu-jitsu situations to the point where you do not even have to think about the details, and your body just reacts to the situation during sparring.

The only way to reach that level is having enough repetitions for all the situations through drills and situational sparring. If you do not know which templates you should focus on, be proactive and ask your professor which techniques are suitable for your body type and age after classes or in private lessons.

After enough repetitions, you will be able to execute your techniques earlier than your opponents’ attacks, and while they are using their speed to catch up with you, you can move on to your next step. That is what being one step ahead means.

Since this is such a common question, I have made a video about it on my Youtube channel.

2. Find small successes in your training

You, of course, get the most satisfaction from controlling opponents and tapping them out when training BJJ. However, if you are an older BJJ practitioner, and also a beginner, chances are you will be swept, have your guard passed, and get tapped out over and over again by younger, more athletic, and more experienced people. This is true of all beginners, but if you are an older player, you are even more likely to experience it.

Because of this, many older BJJ practitioners quickly get frustrated and burned out since they do not feel satisfied when they get beat up in training.

Therefore, I always recommend older BJJ practitioners set a small goal before each class. This can be something very simple, such as not getting submitted by an armbar on that day, delaying someone’s submission for five seconds, or setting up a specific guard. If you accomplish those small goals, the objective of your training session has been achieved no matter how many times you got tapped out.

With every little hit of success, you will start to enjoy BJJ more and more and will become more and more proficient at it.

3. Do not neglect recovery

It is a little cliche to say this, but if you are an older BJJ player, you should not neglect recovery.

When you are in your teens and twenties, you can spar hard, go to sleep without stretching or eating a proper meal, and feel totally recovered by the next morning. Unfortunately, this most likely will not be the case for older practitioners, and it is very important that you take care of your body. This includes stretching, eating proper meals, sleeping, etc.

Here’s one simple recovery method that you can easily do; take some form of protein and carbs within 30-60 minutes after sparring.

I see a lot of practitioners stay on the mats and chat after sparring sessions, then drive 30 mins to go home, then take a shower, and only then have a meal. In this case, it’s been 90 minutes or more since the end of training.

However, as I discuss in the following video, your body needs protein and carbs immediately after hard training – so don’t deny this nutrition!

I hope these pieces of advice will help you on your BJJ journey. With my experience teaching and training, I have come to firmly believe that BJJ can help older practitioners to be healthy, gain confidence, and make new friends. However, as a community, we need more support for older BJJ practitioners. Giving small, helpful advice can be one step, starting a dedicated class for older practitioners can be another step, and hosting a tournament for them can also be a good start. Stay safe, and always remember,

“Today is the youngest you will ever be.”

Daniel Cormier: “Royce Gracie is the Greatest Submission Artist in UFC History”

Daniel Cormier Royce Gracie is the geatest submission artist in UFC history

Former UFC heavyweight and welterweight champion Daniel Cormier, along with retired NFL player Ryan Clark, hosts the DC & RC show, which is sponsored by ESPN. The two retired athletes this time chose the five greatest submission artists in UFC history.

It’s interestingly that Clark and Cormier didn’t put Charles Oliveira or Demian Mai in the first place, even though they are the two fighters with the most submissions in UFC history. Namely, “Do Bronx” forced its opponents to surrender as many as 14 times, and Maia is a little less successful with 11 wins by submission.

The first place on both rankings was taken by the legendary Royce Gracie. The Brazilian is an icon of the BJJ and one of the pioneers of the UFC. All MMA fans are well aware of what happened in the UFC 1 tournament when Royce easily defeated all three opponents in the first round by forcing them to surrender with BJJ submissions. He won Gracie UFC tournaments twice more (UFC 2 and UFC 4), and only Patrick Smith lost by technical knockout to Royce Gracie. In all other fights, Royce won by submission. A total of 11 of his 15 MMA wins Royce Gracie recorded by submission, and 10 came under the roof of the UFC.

Although Maia and Oliveira are great masters of BJJ, Royce Gracie is a very justified choice for the best. Cormier placed Ronda Rousey in second place, with Fabricio Werdum, Mackenzie Dern, and Frank Mir completing the remaining three places. Cormier admitted that he forgot about Charles Oliveira even though he is the fighter with the most submissions in UFC history.

Ryan Clark has not forgotten about “Do Bronx”, which ranks second on his list, while the Top 5 is closed by Demian Maia, Ronda Rousey, Frank Mir, and “Minotauro” Nogueira (shares fifth place with Mir).

It could be said that Cormier has not only forgotten Oliveira, but also Demiana Maia who certainly deserves his place in the Top 5 much more than Mackenzie Dern. However, Cormier justified the choice of Mackenzie Dern by the fact that she is the only fighter who celebrated in the UFC with a leglock (kneebar against Hannah Cifers). Other than that, Dern is the UFC’s straw category record holder with four wins by submission.

Ronda Rousey Becomes A Mother, Welcomes Baby Girl

The former Strikeforce and UFC champion, Judo bronze medalist, MMA celebrity, and WWE star Ronda Rousey (34) gave birth to her first child yesterday – a baby girl. Rousey and her husband, MMA fighter Travis Browne (39) have named their daughter La’akea Makalapuaokalanipo Browne.

Rousey’s post showcase her daughter underneath her shirt in one photo, and the child’s hand on top of Travis’ arm on another. She captioned the post with just the name of the child.

Browne posted the same photos, captioning them “Welcome to this world La’akea Makalapuaokalanipō Browne. You are so incredibly loved!” Travis has two other children from a previous marriage.

The pair got married in 2017 in Hawaii, where Browne is originally from. This also explains the Hawaiian name of their firstborn child.

In a previous post, Rousey announced that she was eager for the birth of her child by writing “I cannot wait to meet this baby-to see what she’s like, how’s she’s uniquely her, how she’s like me and her dad. I’m dying to see the color of her eyes,” she wrote at the time. “What’s her laugh gonna sound like? When she clears her throat is she gonna do it [the] same way me and my mom do?”

We wish Rousey and Brown and little La’akea all the luck in the world!

Security Guard Who Choked Dillon Danis: ‘He asked me if I knew who he was, and then he started googling his name’

Security Guard Who Choked Dillon Danis: 'He asked me if I knew who he was, and then he started googling his name'

Last week, an incident involving Dillon Danis was included in various martial arts events. The famous fighter, if we can call him that at all, given his references, was arrested while trying to enter a nightclub in New Jersey, and shortly after the first news, a video appeared in which the club’s security guard caught him choking. It is definitely worth noting how Danis tapped that way.

However, so far it was not known how it all happened, or why it was necessary to use force on Danis. Until Al Iaquinta came to the said security guard, called “Chance”, and interviewed him within an episode of his podcast.

The situation was that Danis tried to enter the club, but the rules are the same for everyone. Everyone must show an identity document to prove that he is older than 21 years. Danis did not have or did not intend to show it. The security guard told me what happened then.

“I apologized to him and said he couldn’t come in if he didn’t show me my ID. Then he asked me if I knew who he was. Once again I apologized to him, said I didn’t know and that I needed an ID. Then he googled his name and show me, and I just told him it was still not an identification document. I need a driver’s license, a passport, anything through which I can know how old he is. Then he became angry and aggressive because I didn’t know who he was”, said the security guard, continuing:

“After that, he started hitting me. It wasn’t a very good shot. He tried and missed, after which I grabbed him around the neck and knocked him to the floor. When I do, I usually suffocate a man for a second or two before he realizes the situation in which “In the video, you can see him tapping and then I asked him if he was okay. He then gave me a thumbs up, so I pressed him around my body and held him until the cops came and took over the situation.”

As far as we know, Danis spent the night at the police station and there should be no additional penalties for him. Probably enough punishment for him is that the cameras captured the footage in which the janitor choked him to tap. Let’s not forget, Danis considers himself the best grappler in the world, so he challenged many much harder and bigger fighters than himself to the match. If so, the physical superiority of this steward should not play any role.

(VIDEO) Dillon Danis Gets Choked at the Club by Security Guard

Dillon Danis Gets choked at the club by security guard

We’ve already written about how Dillon Danis ran into trouble last weekend while going out to a nightclub in New Jersey. Although it is not known what the exact reason was, the 28-year-old fighter was detained by the police and forcibly taken out of the club where he was.

At least that is what the video that originally appeared and that we have already uploaded on our portal told us. But now an earlier one has emerged, in which we can see how Danis had his first clash with the police within the club. In short, footage has surfaced where this ground fight master taps while he is inside the club security guard’s choke.

https://youtu.be/8ZhxWf7HB-4

Of course, this is a rather unenviable position for someone with his references and summary. The mitigating circumstances might be the alcohol he brought in, as well as the fact that the security guard is bigger than him, but it is certainly unusual to see someone like that where he finds himself in the mentioned situation within a street fight. Unfortunately, we do not know how the clash took place, as it is still unknown why Danis was detained by the police. It is only known that he was accused of misconduct but without further details.

Danis is a black BJJ belt and for a long time the head partner and sparring partner of Conor McGregor. He also started his MMA career, signing a contract with Bellator. In their arena, he made two appearances against fighters of lower qualitative rank, both times recording a victory. But now it has been more than two years since “El Jefe” last fought.

In the meantime, Danis became “famous” for various name-calling of different fighters and shooting with them. Interestingly, the man who called him, Sean Strickland, did not respond. Perhaps the UFC fighter’s statement that he was ready to kill him still sounded too serious for him to light a fire.

Redneck ‘Street Fighter’ Challenges MMA Fighter and Regrets it

Redneck ‘Street Fighter’ Challenges MMA Fighter and Regrets it

For those of us who train in martial arts, it’s really hard to understand why some people think that without any training in martial arts they are capable of beating someone who trains?

It’s really questionable why they don’t think they can beat a professional tennis player in tennis or e.g. a professional chess player in chess?

Is the reason that the fighting itself is in the nature of man or do a lot of men think they are alpha males?

Whatever the real reason for this, the man in the video is clear proof of the claim that every average man thinks he is 400% stronger than how strong he actually is.

Fedor Emelianenko shares an opinion on ring girls: ‘They should dress more decently’

Fedor Emelianenko Ring Girls

The 44-year-old Russian fighter was not overly eloquent about the importance of ring girls in sports.

One of the greatest MMA fighters in history Fedor Emelianenko is the last in a series of MMA faces to touch the ring girls theme. It all started at the end of August when Khabib Nurmagomedov said at a press conference that he considered them the most useless people in martial arts and that he absolutely did not see their meaning.

Some of the UFC’s Octagon girls, such as Arianny Celeste, and Russian boxer Angelina Semenova, told the Dagestanian that it was the 21st century and to leave the sexism he was taught in the Dagestani hills, were announced in turn. A few days ago, UFC flies champion Valentine Shevchenko defended the ring girls, explaining that ring girls are a tradition and have been present in martial arts since the beginning.

Fedor Emelianenko is somewhere in between. The ring girls do not pose a particular hindrance to him nor has he expressed an opinion to remove them from the sport, but he has made some remarks on their way of dressing.

” Those girls carry signs and show what the round is. The only thing that needs to be changed is that they should dress more decently, ” Fedor said, and when asked by reporters who asked for a more extensive answer, ” Last Emperor ” said

“I have enough problems and affairs in my team and family so I don’t need to fill my head with that nonsense.”

One of the pioneers and greats of this sport obviously does not see any significance in the discussion about ring girls, and that is how he approached it in his review. Khabib Nurmagomedov raised a lot of dust with his statements, and it seems that in the coming period we will hear the opinions of several other fighters and famous MMA faces.

Fully Grown Man Attacks 16-Year-Old Multiple Junior World Champion in BJJ

Grown Man attacks 16 years old BJJ Champion

Alex Williams, a 16-year-old multiple-time Junior World Champion in BJJ was attacked by a fully grown man.

Young Guy Alex was sitting down while being provoked by a fully grown man. At some point, the man kicked him with a knee and that was the moment when Alex decided to take him down. Once Alex took the man down he realized that his threat is not really a physical threat to him due to his Jiu-Jitsu training so he let him go without hurting him.

What happened next is that the attacker didn’t stop and he attacked the young Alex again. The results were the same, Alex took him down again but this time he continued to control him until the man stopped being aggressive.

Alex Williams (IG @alex_williams359) showed how humble a young man he is. He could hurt the guy and do whatever he wanted but he choose to resolve the situation with no harm.

This is exactly the reason why you should get your kids into Jiu-Jitsu & combat sports as it’s pretty unlikely they’ll become bullies. They’ll just become someone humble ready to defend themselves in any situation.

(VIDEO) Conor McGregor Clashes With Machine Gun Kelly at MTV ceremony

UFC star Conor McGregor is currently recovering from a severe leg injury which didn’t stop him to make some noise at the MTV ceremony.

A music awards ceremony was held last night, directed by MTV. The event was held in New York and was attended by many celebrities from various fields of activity. Thus, one of the biggest stars of the UFC, Conor McGregor, was among the guests. The Irishman is known for numerous excesses during his career, and it was not much different this time either.

Namely, numerous recordings and photographs have appeared showing the conflict between Conor McGregor and the globally famous rapper Machine Gun Kelly (real name: Colson Baker). Insurance had to separate the two actors, and they are also the most deserving that the whole situation has not escalated even more.

According to a TMZ report, the conflict reportedly occurred after McGregor asked Kelly to be photographed together. The rapper denied his request and there was an escalation. Kelly reportedly pushed Conor away from recovering from a severe leg fracture he suffered in July against Dustin Poirier. McGregor stumbled after being pushed away and spilled the drink all over himself. Shortly afterward, the Notorious threw his drink at Kelly, where security had to step up its intervention and further distance Kelly and McGregor.

By the way, the injured McGregor appeared at the ceremony with a crutch that makes it easier for him to move during his recovery from the injury. He definitely doesn’t need a physical conflict at this stage of recovery, and Conor would risk worsening the injury and further prolonging his recovery. McGregor was in the company of his longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin, while MGK came to the ceremony accompanied by Megan Fox. Both actors of this conflict were seen in the audience after the show began.

One of Conor’s spokespersons spoke for the MMA Fighting portal, saying:

” Conor McGregor didn’t ask anyone to be photographed and this incident didn’t start. He doesn’t know Machine Gun Kelly except for the fact that he was a guest at his fight in July. ”

The Irish MMA fighter later also referred to the incident in an interview for Entertainment Tonight. Conor calmed the tensions or rather did not want to go into too much detail about what had happened.

” Nothing has happened to me, I’m just fighting against real fighters, against people who are really fighting. I’m certainly not going to fight the little Vanilla Ice white rappers. I don’t even know that guy. I don’t know anything about him except that he is with Megan Fox, ” the Irishman added.
