If you’re thinking about racking up the taps, then you should be thinking about the Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD. It doesn’t have a special move or system that will get you to tap everyone, and that is exactly why the stuff presented in this instructional will work for you.
Dinu covers a wide array of submissions, bar neck cranks and spinal locks, and covers both Gi and no-Gi iterations in the process. It makes this a BJJ DVD fit for anyone, of any level, and training under any type of ruleset. While it is not the end-all-be-all of submission hunting BJJ instructional, it is one you should consider getting, particularly if you’re a blue belt.
The Cherry on The Top
What is the ultimate thing you’re looking for when you’re rolling in BJJ? Regardless of what you think you are focusing on, if you get a sub, you’ll take it. That answers the question for you, pretty much providing the main goal everyone moves toward in grappling – getting a tap.
The thing is, those taps tend to be a lot more elusive than before, and with people who have been training since the before times, they feel next to impossible for the most part. As far as submissions go, there are two absolute truths you need to be aware of:
- They’re the hardest thing you’ll need to do in BJJ, and
- They’re something you can’t even imagine grappling without in modern Jiu-Jitsu.
In that regard, you need more than one. When I say more than one, I don’t mean just one submission hold, but rather more than one, and preferably at least a couple of each category of submission holds – leg locks, arm locks, strangles and spine locks. The Dinu Bucalet Submission DVD contains plenty of options to pick from for most of these key categories.
Romanian Black Belt Dinu Bucalet
These days, more and more people appear in the sport without ties to a traditional, on-coach lineage that traces back to some of the OGs of the sport. Dinu Bucalet is one of them, having trained all over Europe, and represented a few teams in the process.
He has been grappling since his teenage days, after stumbling onto BJJ through Muay Thai. Earning his black belt at age 25, he credits lots of people for his BJ development, such as Mill Hill’s late Nick Brooks, Wim Deputter, and Tudor Mahaita, to name a few.
Bucalet also has a pro MMA record of 4-1, with most of his fights happening in Europe about a decade ago. Just like most grapplers who have a well-rounded game without being a specialist in a specific position, Dinu likes to go for the finish, not tying his game to a single position.
Such versatility is the sign of an advanced grappler, and since Bucalet is equally as proficient with and without the Gi, he’s a great source to learn from. Despite being fairly short, his Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD offers some great details on many BJJ submission finishes.
Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD Review
The Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD is a very short instructional, lasting under an hour. It’s more like a long BJJ class, but that just means you’ll get to go through it very quickly multiple times:
Part 1 – Mount & Side Control
The first part of the Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD focuses on a few classic submissions and some interesting, not often-seen options. The classics are represented by mounted armbars, Americanas and a sneaky lapel Ezekiel.
A triangle choke setup from side control (yes, that one that you’re thinking about) also features, followed by the star of this volume – the Faria choke. Dinu wraps up with a guillotine choke and his thoughts on Marcelo Garcia’s signature North-South choke.
Part 2 – Arm In Strangles
My favorite portion of the Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD is this one, but I am partial to head and arm chokes. Still in the North-South position, Bucalet opens up with an arm-in variation of the NS choke, followed by a selection of Darce variations from different top positions.
The Peruvian necktie, another personal favorite of mine, also features, although not enriched by any significant new details. The Khabib version of the arm triangle was something that caught my eye, leading to a triangle choke, and an arm-in Ezekiel.
A couple of strangles from the back – the Pena choke and a bow and arrow variation, spell the end of this portion.
Part 3 – Gi Submissions
The final part of the Dinu Bucalet Winning Submission DVD is all about combining Gi submissions together. Starting with a Canto choke and arm lock combo, Dinu launches into an exploration of Brabos (which I enjoyed), armbar/Monoplata combinations (which I am indifferent to), and finally opts to throw in a few leg locks, in the form of knee bars and heel hooks from top position.
Bring the Fear Factor
When I first started rolling, I was so focused on positional dominance that I was afraid to go for a sub for fear of losing position. This, as expected, did not yield much satisfaction on my part.
So, I decided to become a submission hunter. Yeah, overnight. As a somewhat fresh blue belt, I went from a positional grappler to completely abandoning any thought of points and just trying and submit people. I couldn’t imagine that hunting for subs would also improve my positioning.
Well, as it turns out, people tend to be afraid of tapping out, so they’d much rather let you ride their back or be in the mount than allow you to finish. Hence, since I stuck to my submission hunting, I got two for one – improved finishing rate, and a better positional game.
For me, back in the day, that meant lots of YouTube moves and plenty of watching matches. For you, it is easier – the Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD is just one of many resources you have to get a head start.

Dangerous in Gi & No-Gi
Being able to submit people with both specific Gi and No-Gi submissions is the mark of a true elite grappler. While the contents of the Winning Submission Attacks Dinu Bucalet DVD won’t turn you into one, they will add lots of tools to your arsenal, or for the more experienced, more food for thought about creating submission combos. Either way, you’ll improve.
