The Best BJJ Chokes DVD and Digital Instructionals

The one constant about any BJJ gym you’ll walk into is that in a matter of minutes, you’ll see someone tapping out to a choke or strangle of some sort. Chokes are submission holds that are used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu far more than other grappling martial arts. Wrestling has none, in Judo they’re scarce and far between. Sambo even considers them too dangerous to perform. Catch wrestling does have a few, but most work in unison with neck cranks. The bottom line is that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu chokes are unique and available in too many variations to count. The following list of BJJ chokes DVD instructionals will provide you with more learning opportunities than you could ever hope to go through.

If you really want to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu chokes then you will have to understand two things. First up, there are several different categories of chokes, and each of them works based on the same principles. Secondly, you can’t hope to ever master all chokes with an equal level of proficiency. Instead, you will probably find it hard to master an entire category of chokes as well. What you can (and should) do, though is specialize. Pick a few chokes and make them your best weapons. Really go as deep as humanly possible into the details that make them work. Below you’ll find BJJ chokes DVD instructionals that cover principles, categorization, but most importantly, specific chokes in the most detailed way possible.

The Best BJJ Chokes DVD Instructionals Collection

So, how does choking work in BJJ? You need to have a general idea of things before you dive into the world of BJJ chokes DVD instructionals, right? SO, let’s dissect chokes in Jiu-Jitsu a little bit.

First of all, you have to be aware that chokes in BJJ are set up in one of two main ways – with or without the use of the Gi. Obviously, whether you do a Gi choke depends on whether someone (you, your partner, or both) is wearing a Gi. In both situations, the grips and mechanics of chokes differ, so you’ll usually need a few of each to feel comfortable choking people in BJJ.

Secondly, the categories I spoke of earlier. Basically, you have air chokes and blood chokes, which are usually closely followed by chest compressions and neck cranks. In the true sense of the word, though, blood and air chokes are what we usually mean in Jiu-Jitsu. The way they work is by either blocking the blood flow on one or preferably both sides of the carotid arteries of the neck. That means no oxygen gets to the brain and nap time soon follows.

Air chokes are more painful and less precise, aiming to put pressure on the trachea, closing the throat, and thus ridding the body of oxygen intake. They are effective but work based on slightly different principles than blood chokes.

Finally, you have the different choke systems, like triangle chokes, rear-naked, guillotines, lapel chokes, collar chokes, etc. they all work either as blood or air chokes, but that is where the similarities end, for the most part. Just look into the BJJ chokes DVD instructionals below and every aspect of choking people out will become crystal clear.

New Fernando Terere Video NEVER SEEN BEFORE!

New Fernando Terere Video NEVER SEEN BEFORE!

Just yesterday a very obscure Fernando Terere video surfaced of him competing in the year 2000!

Fernando Terere Augusto is without a doubt one of the most talented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to set foot on the mats. By the age of 20 years old, he became an IBJJF world champion at the black belt and completely dominated the sport for all of the early 2000s. Some of his accomplishments include notorious wins over legends of the sport like Marcelo Garcia, Matt Serra, and Fabio Nascimento.

There are hours of amazing footage of Fernando Terere online but yesterday a very obscure video of him surfaced. It was a match that had never been seen before in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. The video takes place in the year 2000, it features Fernando Terere facing Luis Amigo in the “Brasileiro Equipes 2000” tournament.

In this Fernando Terere video, we can see him in his prime starting with a fast-paced takedown using his opponent’s lapel. Luis Amigo does a great job of slowing down Fernando Terere and breaking down his posture within the closed guard.

When Luis Amigo starts to open his guard in order to look for a sweep or a submission and Fernando Terere jumps on the opportunity. He passes through Amigo’s guard like a hot knife through butter! One of the things that makes someone a master at any skill is his or her ability to make complicated things seem easy. In this video, Terere shows why he was and is still considered one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu warriors to ever do it. The way he passes guard twice in the blink of an eye and makes it look so simple shows how good he truly is.

Is Fernando Terere still capable of dominating this sport?

At 39 years of age, his last match was in 2019 against Delso Heleno in BJJ Stars. A match he lost by submission, however, his amazing comeback story battling through schizophrenia and drug addiction in 2005 to coming back and claiming 2nd place in the IBJJF European Open is like something out of a movie.

There is no doubt Fernando Terere Augusto has heart, and he has always been a Jiu-Jitsu phenom. Only time will tell how this legend will continue…

The Mikey Lock: Mikey Musumeci’s New Powerful Leg Lock

mikey lock by mikey musumeci

This year one of the best footlocker specialists Mikey Musumeci shook the BJJ world with The Mikey Lock. A brand new move that he used to submit Richard Alarcon in this year’s “Who’s Number One” tournament. This new technique combines the ankle-twisting of a heel hook with the devastating knee pressure of a kneebar.

Instead of placing his opponent’s foot under his armpit, Mikey Musumeci places it in what he has called his “neck pit”. Hugging the leg and pressuring it sideways with his hips while trapping the leg with his hands and head. This puts a lot of pressure on the knee and the ankle and because of its effectiveness and how new it is everyone in the BJJ community is now talking about the Mikey lock.

How did Mikey Musumeci come up with the Mikey Lock?

During a session with BJJ Fannatics’s Bernardo Faria Mikey said that the Mikey Lock came to him as a result of closely studying the mechanics of heel hooks. Mikey Musumeci has always been a guy who can break down the most complicated technique to its simplest form. The man is a true scientist when it comes to BJJ and particularly leg locks.

As a result of this, he realized that by controlling his opponent’s foot with his head instead of his armpit and using his hips to apply pressure on the knee he could get a lot more leverage, and thus the Mikey lock was born.

Mikey Musumeci about his leg lock

When asked about it at the WNO tournament he stated that there is no counter to this move so it is a submission with a very high finishing rate.

However, Mikey Musumeci should not rest on his laurels just yet and I believe he knows this. Because the pace of evolution in BJJ is unbelievable and very soon people will start coming up with ways to not only counter the Mikey Lock but also create long chains of attacks off of it. Just like it has happened with many other moves throughout the evolution and growth of BJJ.

If anything the Mikey Lock is a testament to the rapid rate of change and evolution in today’s BJJ. So right now we all should be looking to learn this powerful leg lock and start incorporating it into our respective games.

UFC 1: The Rise of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (November 12, 1993.)

UFC 1: The Rise of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Today marks the 28th anniversary of UFC 1. On November 12, 1993. (the day that changed martial arts forever), an event like none of its kind that established the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and forever immortalized the name Gracie in combat sports history.

But how did UFC 1 come to be?

Although the event is not that old, its history is a little confusing as everyone seems to have a different recount of the events leading up to UFC 1.

The official story is that Helio Gracie’s son Rorion had a desire to bring his father’s Jiu-Jitsu to the world so he moved to the United States and started looking for ways to promote Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. After careful consideration, he decided to host a tournament challenging all fighters from different martial arts to show how Gracie Jiu-Jitsu could beat them all.

This is how UFC 1 was created. To show the superior technique of Jiu-Jitsu, his father Helio decided to call upon his youngest son Royce. He was the least experienced and the skinniest of the Gracies, showing how effective Jiu-Jitsu is against larger opponents.

This is the official story…

What happened later did shake the entire world, for martial arts would never be the same again. Royce walked into the cage against very imposing opponents and took them out one by one to beat them all. People couldn’t believe it, a young skinny Brazilian was making huge men give up with moves that no one had ever seen before.

The very next day UFC 1 was anything anyone could talk about. It created a swarm of people who wanted to start learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The rest as they say is history…

Here is where UFC 1 get’s confusing.

One of the commentators for UFC 1 was Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. Bill remembers the event having a lot of rules and elements that unfairly favored Royce Gracie in the tournament. There were no wrestlers or Judo practitioners among the participating fighters and striking art practitioners were not allowed to wrap their hands or feet. In the very first fight, the infamous fighter from the Netherlands, Gerard Gordeau broke his foot and hand on his opponent’s head.

There is a reason why even bare-knuckle boxing uses hand wraps but according to Bill Wallace, the competitors of UFC 1 were not allowed to do so. Bill also talked about how he had a man sit next to him and feed him information that he had to say on the air about the Gracies. It seemed the tournament was intentionally set up to favor Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

But is that bad? I honestly don’t think so, the fighters did have a chance to win and it wasn’t like people were taking dives. But the main objective of Roirion Gracie was to promote Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the world. Which he did spectacularly. And there is no question today about the effectiveness of BJJ.

It all started at UFC 1 and because of that single event, we now have changed the entire culture around martial arts. There used to be a large amount of mysticism and trickery involved in martial arts as many of the claims people made could not be confirmed. UFC 1 and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu made it so people had to back up their claims with actions in the martial arts community.

Why was Royce Gracie Chosen?

Many have asked why Royce was the one to represent Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. With his brother Rickson being an active undefeated Vale Tudo fighter and by the admission of his brothers the best Jiu-Jitsu practitioner out of all the Gracies, Rickson seemed like the obvious choice. Most accounts (Including Royce himself and the referee of UFC 1 “Big” John McCarthy) say that grandmaster Helio wanted Royce because he would make a bigger statement about the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu.

Some believe however it had something to do with Rorion and Rickson not seeing eye to eye about the business side of things. This resulted in Rorion then giving the job to Royce who was in a better relationship with Rorion at the time.

Rickson himself said that Royce was always the first choice but he was there to act as a backup in case Royce was defeated by any of the other fighters.

What were the results of UFC1?

Regardless of the controversy surrounding UFC 1, there is no doubt the entire martial arts and combat sports world would not be the same today. MMA has now become a global phenomenon as well as BJJ.

Today, martial arts must prove their effectiveness just like the Gracies did in UFC 1 and in their “Gracie Challenge” videos. Not to mention that BJJ is now absolutely essential to all MMA fighters without question. UFC 1 and how its influence is the whole reason why we get to train this amazing martial art all over the world.

So regardless of what you choose to believe about UFC 1, Rorion Gracie was a marketing genius for making this happen and the world is better off because of it. As I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that a world without BJJ is an extremely sad thing to think about.

Andre Galvao Signs MMA and Grappling Contract With ONE Championship

Andre Galvao Signs MMA and Grappling Contract With ONE Championship

After announcing his return to MMA on his Instagram page, the BJJ legend and world champion Andre Galvao posted that he had signed a multiple-fight deal with the Asian promotion One Championship.

Andre Galvao will be competing both in MMA and in submission grappling, we know he will be a force to be reckoned with in any kind of grappling competition but some questions have been raised about his ability to still fight MMA since his last fight was eleven years ago.

An opponent has not been announced for the leader of Atos Jiu-Jitsu but the athlete roster inside of the One Championship organization is filled with very talented up-and-coming fighters.

How are Andre Galvao’s chances looking in the cage?

We also do not know which division he will be competing in, but I think that with Andre Galvao’s massive build, he will most likely be fighting in the light heavyweight or heavyweight divisions.

It is doubtful they will actually put Andre up against the division’s top guys right
away but this still should make for a very exciting fight as though Galvao has not
set foot in the cage for more than a decade he will most definitely cause some
serious problems for anyone on the ground.

As for his striking goes Andre Galvao posted a video training with MMA coach and former fighter Gabriel Miglioli. It seems in the video they are looking to exploit Andre’s explosive wrestling skills to close the distance and take the fight to the ground from the little we can see in the video. However, we are sure they will be keeping their cards close to the vest in order to not give his next opponent too much information.

BJJ Could Change Police and Law Enforcement Forever

BJJ For Police Officers Should be Mandatory

With the spotlight being so heavy on police departments after the outrage pressed by people over police brutality, more and more departments are thankfully starting to see that their officers need more training in how to subdue and deescalate situations. Not only to protect civilians but also to protect themselves from potential harm.

Many police chiefs, including Lynnwood Police department’s Chief Jim Nelson, said yesterday that training plays a major role in law enforcement, however, officers don’t get nearly enough of it. After going through the police academy training diminishes significantly and as anyone reading might know it’s a perishable skill.

Yesterday Lynnwood, Washington’s Police Department made it mandatory for officers to take BJJ lessons every month for the next two years. This can seriously help officers and benefit the public because when more officers know how to control and subdue a suspect the use of deadly force will go down.

How does BJJ reduce deadly force?

There is an old saying that says, “if all you have in your tool belt is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. In other words, if a police officer’s only tool for defusing a tense situation is pulling out his or her firearm then someone will most likely get shot.

Even the notorious situation involving the now infamous killing of George Floyd could have been avoided if the officer involved understood how “blood chokes” work. I will not get into the politics involved in this case, this is just to illustrate how the training of BJJ can help reduce the number of civilian casualties.

Often we also forget those police officers are also people involved in a very dangerous and demanding job. If you put anyone in a situation where they need to deal with aggression and all they have is a gun with little to no training, most people would be consumed with fear. And when we are scared our brain can literally not come up with the best solutions, it is just going on instinct.

There was also a video of six officers trying to take down and control two people at a subway station and failing at it. It turned into a huge scuffle that lasted for over 25 minutes before they were finally able to control them, putting many people in danger. It blew my mind when I saw it but this is what happens when police officers do not have the necessary training to do their job.

On the other hand, there are also hundreds of videos going around the internet of civilians who train BJJ taking down criminals for the police to take into custody. It would be better if police officers already had these skills by themselves.

Why BJJ specifically?

Many have asked if BJJ is the best option for law enforcement and if there might be another option that is more suited for this type of real-world application outside of sport. The concern is that going to the ground may be dangerous for an officer especially if the suspect might be armed and that a martial art without an emphasis on striking like BJJ might be unsafe for law enforcement.

This is a legitimate concern.

However as former Navy Seal officer and BJJ black belt Jocko Willink once put it; “when you’re trying to safely control someone who is resisting, hitting them will not make them comply and it will injure them. If the option is there to control a person without harming them you should always take that route.”

Police officers need to always try to protect themselves but also if at all possible, do it in such a way that doesn’t put anyone else in danger and BJJ gives officers that option.

Will all police departments implement BJJ training?

Most departments recommend it but very few actually mandate it, right now there are several police departments in the US and other countries that have started mandating regular BJJ classes for their officers but it is still nowhere where it needs to be in order to increase the effectiveness of officers and reduce the dangers related to the job.

The best you can do as a BJJ practitioner for your community is to either offer
classes to officers in your area, work with your local police department, or direct
them to your instructor or BJJ gym.

Some police departments are still resisting the idea of training their officers for monetary reasons or for fear that their officers might get injured in training. However, it’s up to us to assure them that the benefits far outweigh the costs.

The Original Baby Bridge Perfectly Explained

The Original Baby Bridge Perfectly Explained

Baby Bridge – Where the head goes, the body follows, and the eyes lead wherever the head goes. Believe it or not, this is how I first got the idea for the Baby Bridge.

Baby lack the necessary muscles and they have to use the most economic way to turn themselves around. Jiu-Jitsu is minimal effort, maximal efficiency so we always have to mimic natural body motion.

The same trick I use here to make my daughter turn around, I also use those whenever I teach my students. By guiding their eyes.

Dillon Danis Came to UFC 268 and Got Slapped. Permanently Removed from UFC Events.

Dillon Danis came to UFC 268 and Got Slapped. Permanently Removed from UFC Events.

Bellator’s fighter has obviously and officially become the ‘persona non grata’ of the world MMA scene

As stated by one eminent fighting medium, although he has not been in a real fight for a long time, and especially not against a real opponent, Dillon Danis continues to lose. The fighter who came to the fore a few years ago as a grappling coach and sparring partner of Conor McGregor eventually became the subject of ridicule by the MMA community. We can confirm this after the last episode in a series of his infamous performances. And it happened at a UFC 268 event.

Throughout the week of the event in New York, Danis, who lives in nearby New Jersey, announced his arrival at the event, with a special eye on Michael Bisping. He resented the former UFC champion, and today the promotion employee, some statements and comments, so he announced that he would deal with him as soon as they met. And indeed Danis came there with a ticket that allowed him to get all the way to the Octagon, which we could see on his Instagram posts. But it is interesting that they were all created in the moments when the hall was still quite empty.

Now we know the reason why this is so, that is, why Danis did not share anything from the moments when the main action took place. The reason is that he was removed from the hall during the event. And so he had a meeting with manager Ali Abdelaziz before that, which ended in a slap. We have no reason not to believe when the same is shared by one of the leading MMA reporters, John Morgan from the MMA Junkie portal.

As for Bisping, Danis “tweeted” several times during the evening that their meeting had almost happened, but that Bisping had run away when he saw him. The Englishman initially ignored and then decided to comment anyway, after learning what had happened. He later deleted his post, but the internet remembers.

“How pathetic. People, for your information, Dildo was honestly punched in the face like a bitch, in the backstage of the gym, after which he was permanently removed from all UFC shows. Haha,” Bisping wrote

Danis thus experienced a fate similar to that of Jake Paul, who is also no longer a welcome guest at the world’s largest MMA promotion events. Dana White told him personally. As for Danis, obviously, the UFC president doesn’t have time to deal with such.

Although at the beginning of some grappling results Danis had some respect for his name, he lost it over time. Many say he actually fell the lowest after even Ariel Helwani made fun of him in the last conversation. And that’s something the otherwise very measured and friendly most famous MMA journalist doesn’t do. He treats all fighters with maximum respect. Danis is an exception unless he considers him a fighter at all. In fact, it’s actually a very good question, does it make sense to consider it that way.

(PHOTO) Gaethje and Chandler Met in Hospital and Took Photos for MMA history

justin gaethje vs michael chandler

Several times during the UFC 268 broadcast, we saw how many surprises, very often pleasant, MMA can offer. So many times we get something we didn’t think could happen, but we secretly hoped. And again, we are surprised because, despite everything we have seen and experienced so far, we did not really think that something like that would happen in a particular fight.

A lot was expected from the fight between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler at the start. However, first of all, from the stylistic side, that is, there were questions in that direction. It was believed that Gaethje should keep the fight on her feet and hit the already proverbially weak Chandler’s chin, while the former Bellator champion was assumed to have to win by wrestling. And here we are all thinking about which strategy will prevail. It seemed so simple, and even then exciting.

In the end, we got a phenomenal 15 minutes of perhaps the best fight of the year. Two top warriors who did their best and who hit and automatically received terrible blows. Where did Chandler get his beard now? A fighter who was knocked down by Patricio Pitbull and Charles Oliveira with much weaker blows than the ones he received in dozens in this fight. How much longer can Gaetje fight this way and win? We ask these questions looking with delight at what these two warriors were providing in Octagon.

Also, they behaved like warriors after the fight. Greetings full of respect and presenting the same through statements. And then something we couldn’t see on the screens. A meeting at the hospital resulted in a photograph that will also go down in history, as the final passage of this chapter of the anthology MMA book.

Truly the perfect end to what we had a chance to see. Something in the style of what Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson did after their fight, which this year absolutely deservedly became part of the UFC’s “Hall of Fame”. And what Yair Rodriguez and Chan Sung Jung did in five rounds after their miraculous war. The only thing is that the faces of Gaethje and Chandler remained in a slightly better condition, but they also did two rounds less than the duo whose legendary photos he can see below the text.
