Bas Rutten: “I’d Never Throw the First Punch Against a Civilian”

According to Bas Rutten, he’s being in 35 street fights in his life. But, as he spent a big part of his life working as a bouncer it’s something he probably got used to. Although his bouncer career was before his MMA career, Rutten still got into street fights after he was well known as a professional fighter.

Probably the best-known Rutten’s street fight was in Sweden in Spy Bar against bouncers. The incident happened when Rutten was pulled to the side by two bouncers. They asked him to leave and stay out of trouble what he agreed to. But, despite the fact he agreed to leave the bar, for some reason, bouncers still fought him.

Anyway, Bas Rutten is very well known for his self-defense videos where he uses different tactics and approaches to street fighting. He’s not unfamiliar with dirty ways of fighting and doing everything to win the street fight, but his philosophy of fighting and engaging in street fights is pretty fair. According to his own words, of course.

In an interview for MMA FIGHTING Bas Rutten commented on the situation of Joe Schilling where Joe knocked out a guy a week ago. He gave his opinion on bar fighting and responding to civilians.

“In the situation of Joe Schilling, I wouldn’t have done it. I’m happy that it came out that the guy used to beat his exes because I wouldn’t have done it. In my case, they’re going to have to throw the first punch or I don’t do anything.”

“Most of the time I’m not going to fight If I see they’re drunk. I might put them in a choke if they really… I would just choke them out, put them aside and call the cops.”

“But listen, I’ve been drunk numerous times in my life. This guy knew what he was doing, obviously. But if somebody is really drunk I can’t see a reason to bash his face? When he wakes up the next day he won’t even remember what happened. I’m really not into that.” – replied Bas Rutten.
